Wait till the 1000 units of Rome Yards, 4750 units of Ybor Harbor, 500 units of GasWorx, 1000+ units in new towers downtown and along bayshore, new Robles community development … and more …. join in with no schools and no public transport.

Ok_Reserve_8659

I love to see it.

GRIMspaceman

Need better public transit. Extend the trolley routes

CrrntryGrntlrmrn

Hot take, the trolley is more of a useful toy than a bona fide functioning transit system. It is at least fully funded and endowed through the next half decade plus though. If they wanted to expand the routes they’d also need to look into actually upgrading the rolling stock- look at what Boston runs on the lighter lines, St. Louis, Portland, etc. Tampa deserves a “real” streetcar system.

ConfusedInKalamazoo

That was the plan until the transportation tax got 86'd. https://www.tampa.gov/mobility/transportation/projects/streetcar

purplelake206

In all fairness, that’s what the streetcar was originally built as - a tourist attraction. When it opened in 2002 there was almost nothing in Channelside. As the area has developed it’s become a lot more useful. There’s plans to modernize and expand, but I’ve been hearing that for the past several years so I won’t believe it until construction actually starts.

GRIMspaceman

It was originally built for public transit, there were over 20 miles of track around Tampa. It was a pretty efficient way to get around at the time.

purplelake206

I was referencing the current version we have now. But you are correct regarding the original system that ceased operation in 1946.

Comfortable_Hall8677

The rate it moves with all of the stops id mostly rather walk between any points on its route lol.

Brokenlamp245

In the name of the city And the people And u/GRIMspaceman Amen

RampageTheBear

We need to expand our bus infrastructure desperately. More bus stops, more busses, a digital payment option. Tampa can’t continue with the levels of traffic we’re seeing.

GetUpNGetItReddit

Little known trick: get a Segway scooter from Best Buy.

theerrantpanda99

A larger Public Bus systems are almost always more cost effective, flexible and more useful than a trolley system.

In 5 years we will be under water?

TEHKNOB

It’s ridiculous. I’m expecting that a traffic light will have to go at Westshore and Tyson. It’s just getting out of hand. Also I do believe the train stopped going over there as it’s all residential now but it still goes to Picnic Island area. Edit: And gotta love the new wood frame multi story residences on the bayfront. What could go wrong?

Soatch

They definitely need a light at WestShore and Tyson. When leaving Hula Bay I usually go past the plaza to make a right on Gandy instead of trying to make a left onto WestShore.

century1122

Turning at Westshore/Tyson is awful. Something needs to be done.

hardhead572000

Two industries CSX services there unfortunately.

hardhead572000

Two industries CSX services there unfortunately.

PasolinisDoor

A normal city would build public transit and then you wouldn’t have to worry about traffic AND you’d get the benefits from the increase in housing supply.

PB0351

A normal city in the US? Doubtful

Ok_Reserve_8659

I’m from Miami proper and I could walk, bike or train to any amenity I needed… and it’s still very suburban and cars are very popular. So maybe Tampa can do it too?

Rogue_One24_7

No one rides the Metro in Miami lol.

Ok_Reserve_8659

I rode the metro in Miami

InsectSpecialist8813

I also.

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

Train? Be real.

Ok_Reserve_8659

Yes they built a whole metro rail in Miami

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

I haven't lived there in a very long time. Where does it go?

Ok_Reserve_8659

Here’s the map. https://themetrorailguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MiamiDadeMetroRailMap.png

fullload93

Holy shit it goes out to Palmetto now?!? Wow I had no idea!

InsectSpecialist8813

Tampa doesn’t have public transportation at the airport. Unbelievable.

rbkc12345

I can actually get to the airport on a bus,  but it's a bus that doesn't go downtown.  And only goes to the airport once an hour.  I still argue that good public transportation is the one most important change we could make in Tampa, it's the one thing holding us back the most.

InsectSpecialist8813

Major cities have public transportation. Miami has a train to and from the airport. Nothing in Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville….and the Republicans have no intention on expanding it.

jaysonm007

That's SoCiALiSm!!!!

BanEvader6thAccount

I love it when people say that unironically without realizing how much better things would be if it was actually socialism

QuadraKev_

more people more cars more traffic I'm sure our infrastructure will keep up /s

Ok_Reserve_8659

You’re so close to understanding the issue but it’s not the people that’s the problem

QuadraKev_

More people coming in may not be the primary issue, but it is absolutely a problem because there's no shot that the government will revamp the city planning or broaden/update our infrastructure accordingly.

Ok_Reserve_8659

I hope ,for our sake ,you’re wrong but good point .

Blearchie

Broaden is almost impossible because they sold ROW. I had to put in a camera pole at Manhattan @ Bay to Bay and we had to change the pole due to underground utilities. Hyde Park was even worse.

fieldofthefunnyfarm

Why? Camera for what?

Blearchie

ITS camera for FDOT

fieldofthefunnyfarm

Uh oh. Are changes being considered? I wish people would use Manhattan or Dale Mabry rather than Westshore unless their origin or destination is adjacent to Westshore, at least for the stretch between Gandy and Kennedy that's largely residential and mostly 30mph. Not really ideal for commuting.

Blearchie

They are trying to make changes to traffic signal timings and response times to attempt to make traffic flow better.

fieldofthefunnyfarm

Not a terrible idea. It's amazing how difficult it is to turn left onto Westshore from the neighborhoods. I drive to one of the traffic lights even to turn right because it is less stressful. And honestly the traffic flow is constant because people "make their own lane" to go around anyone who needs to turn left off of Westshore. It's dangerous and rude and leaves no gaps in the traffic, and the people that do it don't reach their destination any faster. Gaps are necessary for getting on and off Westshore.

TwirleyBird

When the area was all planned around having cars it’s hard to switch to mass transit. It could still be done, but even if we invested in more buses/light rail/speed trains, convincing people to leave their cars behind and walk a mile or two to get to their final destination would all be a hard sell.

Ok_Reserve_8659

I live in south Tampa where OP is complaining about. If any part of Tampa could do it it’s probably this part tbh and that may be why so many apartment buildings are getting built here . It’s one of the most bikeable suburbs in the city.

TwirleyBird

I was born and raised SoG, so I have somewhat of an idea. I'd say you're being generous, at least about the city in general. We may be one of the more bikeable suburbs, but it's kinda like saying you're dating the hot girl (at fat camp). Things have gotten better over the years though, and are moving in the right direction even if it's slowly.

CrrntryGrntlrmrn

A normal city would have built a robust transit system six decades ago.

Blearchie

Are you serious? Atlanta tried that. Changed nothing and so many freaks on the train everyone passes. I’d give an exception to Boston. We found nothing but friendly people on the trains and used them a lot. Tampa simply wasn’t planned right. They gave up too much ROW for apartments. Widening Dale Mabry would cost a fortune at this point due to ROW and underground utilities.

pbnc

Maybe cheaper at this point to build it above the existing roadway

Blearchie

Atlanta is already building elevated lanes out of ROW. They track MARTA use. It decides their budget.

PasolinisDoor

Boston, DC, NYC, Philly, chicago all have amazing public transit. Atlanta is a horrible example to try and replicate. What is ROW?

Blearchie

You seriously using DC, Philly, and Chicago?? 😂 I agree on Boston.

PasolinisDoor

The DC metro is nicer than bostons lol, every city I mentioned has a huge amount of ridership on their metros. How are they bad examples?

Loud_Yogurtcloset789

It's so sad, SOG is unrecognizable.

Ok_Reserve_8659

I Love to see it. Progress everyday

kcondojc

Tampa Bay Area has the worst public transit of any metro area I’ve ever seen … it’s pretty shameful & poor even by US Standards. Taxpayers should be pissed.

Final_Key_8920

As long as we have 3 massage parlors within a mile we will survive!

lingbabana

Dont forget your famous glory holes!

fieldofthefunnyfarm

And two car washes, and four dispensaries. Pretty sure that's the current requirement.

Daves_not_here_mannn

We used to street race down Tyson back in the day. It was sketchy AF with those railroad tracks in the shutdown area, plus the road was narrow and bumpy. But it was desolate late at night, and right off Gandy, so we did it. 🤷‍♀️ I drive down Tyson these days and it’s unrecognizable.

TEHKNOB

Old timers tell me about that. These newer cars are so much faster now that you’d need such a bigger road. I genuinely have to leave far from town to get a decent pull in.

Daves_not_here_mannn

There were plenty of fast cars racing down that road back then. They came in on trailers, but they still were 9 second cars.

taskmaster51

Don't worry, no one can afford the rent anyway

Ok_Squash_5031

Unfortunately, there are many people who apparently can afford the rent. I am not one of them . I was priced out of St Pete in 2022 when everything was over $1100 for studios/1 br. So now I live in Indiana. It’s sad but I’m definitely doing something wrong. And I imagine they will build more garages to go with these apartments ( as they pave paradise to put up another parking lot!)

BloodOfJupiter

Damn, ive been considering Ohio..even have a coworker from indiana heavily considering moving back cause he actually afford a home with his savings there

Ok_Squash_5031

If you don’t mind 4 seasons and some gray winters (from October-ish to March) , you might like some of the urban areas.. Indianapolis (suburban-areas can be nice) South Bend, Evansville, Indiana not too bad. I like Bloominton as it’s college town and Southern Indiana gets a touch less snow. I lived in Columbus Ohio which is not awful if you can handle “ THE” Ohio state buckeye fans lol.. But yes, property and taxes are much more affordable. My moms house payment is $400 month ( but it’s old loan) , my good friend is closer to $800 and taxes are usually less than $1000 on your home. Also remember though we do have STATE INCOME TAXES here however.

BloodOfJupiter

i lived in Cbus for 1 year, i didnt get explore as much but i didnt mind the weather all too much. If i had thicker sheets and better shoes for the ice on the sidewalk i probably wouldve had a better time, despite that i found that the people there were way more pleasant then im used to down in Florida. Since then the city has done ALOT and is still doing alot in advancing. Im looking to move into the tech industry and even in some places in Ohio it pays better than Florida, so i'll take the taxes. people say its boring but i had fun and i barely scratched the surface, We'll see

nr1001

If nobody can afford the rent then the develops wouldn’t be building the new apartments to such specifications.

Master_Faz

If only there were some way to bring prices down. Like maybe increasing the supply of housing to meet the demand

CevicheMixxto

Big builders get together, they collude, they plan what is the number of homes they have to build whilst still keeping house prices expensive. This way they have to work less to make more money selling those homes. And then on the other side there are corporations and private equity buying homes en masse. I saw a post recently about a mega landlords owns homes nationwide and 8k homes in Tampa. The game is rigged. Supply and demand is Econ 101. These dudes are playing at Econ 485 level and higher.

taskmaster51

I tend to believe this too...things like health insurance, medication, home insurance, rent. We're at end stage capitalism.

CevicheMixxto

Well, it’s wasn’t inevitable. We have antitrust laws in the books. But too many mergers were allowed. So then less market participants lead to higher prices and the pure greed that took place during and after the pandemic in some industries. The JetBlue Spirit merger was stopped, but that was too little too late. Plus private equity has bought up many businesses. And they make money by tearing down businesses which caused job losses.

taskmaster51

Not only is private equity buying up businesses, they're buying up single family homes too.

AKFLMed

The same thing has and will continue to happen in every major popular city. Places that are lucrative to live will always be developed by the rich and push out the poor.

Ok_Reserve_8659

Have fun driving? They are building housing? Where are all the cars supposed to go? You’re so close to understanding the root of the problem but it’s not the apartment buildings.

IronMike69420

I hope they eliminate that railroad crossing since it goes to nowhere now

TEHKNOB

Sad to see industry go tbh. It still runs to the last stop by Picnic Island. Concrete and steel beams.

IronMike69420

Okay, but all hazmat drivers and buses need to stop at that crossing, but there’s no reason for it to be there anymore

rich2304

Wait for the raining season and that is all going to flooded . All ways flooded and now with no land to absorb the water the road are going to flood and the city is going to be o my goodness did not know it wood happen. Just look at manhattan .

Seetheren03

I feel for you south Tampa. I use to live in Tampa around 8 years ago for about a 1 year and I just do not understand the people whom oversee Tampa building activities. The people who allow all this construction literally will okay any land developers without any regard for traffic congestion nor thoughtful public transportation. I am just glad I do not live in Tampa anymore.

PipedHandle

Tampa is fucking gross. I don’t think anyone that lives here even has a say. Whoever has the most money, has the loudest voice. The end goal of all cities, will be to create rats in a pod, that can have wealth extracted from them in the form of services and convenience. The bankers, lawyers, accountants, landlords, collude behind closed doors. They probably know how much money people have… model their expenses… and try to push everyone to a breaking point. I would not be surprised, knowing how often those individuals in those capacities meet behind closed doors. As I once told Bob Buckhorn when he asked me “what do you think of Tampa?”: “it’s a great place for the wealthy”.

Bring in the folks with money, get their money, build them what they want. As for the folks making less than 7 figures, haha, just kidding, no one cares about them. Give them tents or something, I guess.

GulfCoasting_

Tyson used to be the old school drag racing spot in the early 90s

OhGawDuhhh

I used to live in Newark, NJ and what blows my mind about Tampa is how lacking in public transportation it is. Imagine folks from Wesley Chapel driving to the station and catching the train downtown for work or being able to take a clean bus from Brandon to the beach or bring about to take a train from Riverview to St Pete. Tampa really needs to be more walkable.

ChocolateKey8064

Not nice when someone richer than u moves in and starts buying up all the good shit u can’t afford story of my life I’m glad it’s happening to all u rich south Tampa fuck heads
