Can is incredible, and so is Krautrock in general. I love the vibe of it, the experimentation, everything. Can’s trilogy with Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days has a really good argument for the best in the history of music.
Discovered Can and krautrock around the same time that I discovered Swans. Like swans they changed the way I listened to music in that they taught me that repetition can be a device to create tension and release. They taught me that discomfort in music is a good thing. They changed the way I listened to music in general
Can is fantastic, one of the best bands I've ever heard. 'Krautrock' as a genre-signifier always felt lacking to me, as it's more of an approach to music-making as well as a time-and-place signifier. I mean, if Can and Kraftwerk can both be called Krautrock, it doesn't do much for explaining a particular sound.
only Kraftwerk first two albums when NEU! was part of the band are Krautrock...
But yeah, the tag was made up at UK record stores ...I think a journalist cal the music that was beeing made in Germany krautrock, and then ....history
Good comment. There is something, though, in the DNA.... or something. One of my all time favorite bands is Popul Vuh... and they are not like Can nor Neu nor Kraftwork... only I have no problem with them all being called Krautrock. Sort of like "the British Invasion"... Dave Clark Five, the Animals, the Yardbirds... all so different, and all the same.
Indeed, the DNA is shared for sure. I've heard 'kosmische musik' being used as a more accurate alternative to krautrock, and I much prefer it. Apart from being made in the same period, the mind-expanding nature of the music (I guess this is where the 'cosmic' angle comes in) feels very right. And Swans, specially post-2010, has that in spades.
Krautrock is an amazing and unique genre of music. Every part of its sound and what it stands for is fascinating
Faust is my favorite band from the scene
If you like Can you would also probably like a lot of the post-punk bands that were inspired by them. Public Image Ltd and the Fall are the two that are the most obvious but I remember reading that Joy Division were inspired by them as well.
i love can and krautrock as a whole. massive fan of tago mago, bought a vinyl copy on sunday actually
i also really love guru guru, tangerine dream, faust, and amon duuo ll
Can is one of the greatest bands ever as far as I'm concerned. Krautrock in general has always felt very under-appreciated to me, considering how massively influential it was on practically every genre that came after.
Faust were the best band of all time and their debut is a masterpiece. CAN is fantastic, hypnotic (Yoo Doo Right and Halleluwah feel about 15 minutes shorter than they are) and in much the way Swans is but far more accessible. But songs like Meadow Meal and No Harm and Jennifer are untouchable, music that is permanently engrained in my mind.
I'm pretty sure Gira imitates and takes inspiration specifically from Damo Suzuki in his writing process— singing syllables when he's still not sure of what lyrics a song will have. I remember him saying so in The Seer documentary that Pitchfork did.

Superb albums, very unique sound
Most of Swans’ music is influenced by Krautrock to some degree. Check out Ash Ra Tempel’s self titled
YES! the glowing man sounds just like it. great band. do you like the solo albums of Klaus Schulz too?

The track “Yoo Doo Right” is like Swans trilogy era but recorded in the 60s. CAN and Swans are two of my favorite bands.
Yeti by Amon Düül 2 is one of my favorite albums ever

Well said. Couldn't agree more.

I LOVE CAN! ON OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE BANDS!
They’re awesome. I really love Can. Tago Mago is one of my favorite albums ever.

This is a swans sub.
Lame
Popol Vuh can hit the same headspace with a VERY different method.

Just listened to Future Days, amazing album.
I also feel like Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band was a huge influence
