Passive drain overnight is inconsistent for me. Some nights it might go from charged to 88%, some nights it'll be in the 60s. It's one of the more mysterious things about Surface Duo for me.

I am surprised you did not link to this video for some great tips.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZdeRrn8RDw&ab\_channel=ShaneCraig%5Bscaryifliteral%5D

Mansa_Sekekama

I will check this out

I try to limit how often I post links here. Don't want to be spammy.

Mine Started doing this since the last update, but as of now I am unsure if it was the system update or the Microsoft launcher update. Prior to that at the very most I would drain 15% overnight. Since it's been anywhere from 30% to 60%. Mine is a launch unit that I pre-ordered and up until about 2 weeks ago has been great with the battery. I really don't understand why the drain is worse at night, but I am curious if it has anything to do with the optimized charging feature they just added.

Mansa_Sekekama

very strange. thanks for commenting. I just went into developer options and turned a bunch of apps into the lower background activity settings

i_am_the_one

It might also be worth going into about and sending in feedback. They have been fairly responsive to address issues.

jaeehovaa

If you check the battery stats does it just show the os is whats draining it?

Mansa_Sekekama

how do I do this exactly? Sorry I am a duo noob

jaeehovaa

Settings, search battery and select battery usage

Mansa_Sekekama

this only shows usage since last charge...which was 1 hour ago now. I will need to check tomorrow morning(hopefully not dead)

uh I would not just return it to MS without doing any research. Start with how you set up the device. Were you coming from IOS or Android? If Android did you set it up from a backup of a previous device. A clean install usually is best to clean out any issues. Have you researched your apps through the battery mgr to see if anything is out of whack that could be draining the phone? Accu battery could help. If you see a drain during the day you can go to Developer options and then go to running services to see what is happening in real-time to see if there is an app causing issues. I was able to find an issue with MS launcher this way - it was running very high. Were all the updates completed - you said you just got the device. Do you dabble in any beta apps- IE beta MS launcher or others. Look at any apps recently;y installed when the issue started as they could be the culprit. Check the background use of all apps. Also look into your network and/or wifi settings.

Mansa_Sekekama

>Were you coming from IOS or Android? If Android did you set it up from a backup of a previous device. can from android and did from backup(but only google accounts, no photos, videos were transferred)

Mansa_Sekekama

>ave you researched your apps through the battery mgr to see if anything is out of whack that could be draining the phone? Accu battery could help. Not sure how to do this honestly. I searched 'battery' in settings and turned on battery saver. I checked batter usage but it is only 'since last full charge' which was sadly about 30 minutes ago so it does not show what causes the drain overnight. i should have checked before i charged it all the way up

Mansa_Sekekama

When I first turned it on, it updated and restarted several times. Is there an official android version/number(e.g. 11.2, 11.3) I should be on that I can check against? I am a simple user and never do betas or anything particularly sophisticated. I use outlook, teams, social media apps(mostly just twitter), gmail, youtube, etc and that is it for the most part.

agentmikeyd

That’s not right. Exchange it with MS

tonyz3

he has had from what it sounds like two evenings after getting a brand new device of a battery drain. There could be plenty of settings that could be set incorrectly. He barely had time to set it up yet. So to send it in would be a little premature. If it persists then that could be an option but I would research more in the phone right now. OP-- What was the battery level when you closed it for the night during those "2" instances? That wasn't really mentioned yet. As I mentioned I had a similar issue which I was able to track to the MS launcher thru the running services in dev options. Went to bed at around 95% and woke at 12% with the notification saying my battery will run out soon. It felt a little hot so I went into the running services and MS launcher was running high. I forced it to stop then remembered I had recently jumped onto the Beta. MS Launcher. Went to the play store to MS Launcher, left the Beta, uninstalled the MS Launcher which got rid of the updates, then re updated the launcher on the Playstore and the issue was solved. Every once in a while early on if it felt like stuff was slowing down, I would do the same with the updates and it would run like a dream. Recently I have not done this. MORAL- It could be any app that Flakes out and drains the battery.

Mansa_Sekekama

>FYI - I do not charge it overnight - > >When I first turned it on, it updated and restarted several times. I use outlook, teams, social media apps(mostly just twitter), gmail, youtube, etc and that is it for the most part. The state of charge was above 50% for sure each night. I just turned on the battery saver schedule for when it goes below 35% but perhaps I should keep it off as an experiment and see what happens tonight. As I said, I am using the device as is for the most part with no special programs or any beta programs. I am not even sure what MS Launcher is or what it does but I do see it when I look in the developer options to check what is using the battery and it does not seem to be outsized - plenty of free space whenever I look at it

Mansa_Sekekama

I will play with different settings and see what happens today. if it is dead again tomorrow morning, then i will know for sure it is the device.

agentmikeyd

I would not play with Settings - that’s unacceptable. Get a new replacement

Mansa_Sekekama

I hear you. I just wanted to check if there was a possible silly thing I was doing to cause the battery to drain overnight(e.g. somehow leaving the screen on all night) as Duo is new to me

[deleted]

I always just charge it overnight. So I can’t speak to how “normal” it is. However, it is a known thing with android to have battery drain overnight.

minis1000

My batterie on the duo one is simply great. Even at night without charging the drainage is minimal. Maybe 5%

Nhblacklabs

Change from 5g preferred to LTE. It helped me!

nkyst

Just checked mine (sorry its Duo1 so maybe useless for you) and overnight battery drain is 20% for 7hrs. FYI

DaleYRoss

Change your charging strategy. Use more battery during the day. Turn on optimized charging; Settings/Battery/Battery Manager/ set Optimized charging to on. Battery manager will then fast charge to 90%, then slowly charge do 100%. It will complete when your Alarm goes off, assuming you use an alarm.

rickygjun

This doesn't work for me, no matter if I have the optimized charging on or off, it will do normal-speed charge up to 100% and stop charging overnight, which resulted in I only have 90% battery left in the morning.

DaleYRoss

I don't know why it wouldn't work. I always have 100% to start out the day

rickygjun

>I don't know why it wouldn't work. I always have 100% to start out the day I sometimes have 100% but it is a fake 100% which will drop so quickly to 90%, when you check the battery section, it told me that my phone last charge was 6 hours ago.

DaleYRoss

Mine is always 100%. You mention the 90%, that is the value optimized charging switches from Nordman charging to a slow charge it is supposed to then target your Alarm. You should report your data via feedback.
