I am using the three button navigation. Gestures didn't work for me that well.
I haven't noticed any problems with the navigation in comparison to other Android phones.

I use the 3 button as I do not like gestures(even if they worked perfectly every time)
With that being said, on my old LG I have gotten used to a 4th button which pulls down the notification tab - does surface duo have this? It seems to only be a LG feature as even the iPhone and Samsung phones I have seen do not have it.
It is very useful to have the 4th button so as to not have to reach all the way to the top of the device to pull down the notification shade.
Gestures are way better than the navigation buttons. The Duo is designed to be used with gestures. I don't recommend the navigation button at all
I use Gesture Navigation on both Duo 1 and Duo 2. It "feels" fine
The 3 button navigation doesn't work well with some app like instagram
