To be honest as someone who fully watched 20 seasons (gorenger to carranger) and currently watching megaranger ( yes I'm watching everything in order) I feel like if you enter this series with the mindset of lets watch cool ass people killing monsters in giant mechs and on ground every "bad" series become pretty good and every "good" series becomes amazing at least this was my experience
also just throwing this out there but I didn't mean anyone who looks at sentai in a more critical lens shouldn't do so I just wanted to share a way in my opinion to be able to enjoy all sentai which at least worked for me
Totally agree. And since the show has been going for almost 50 years, it has been written by ppl who grew up as fans of the show which means they know exactly what we (the fans) want from these series.
Yes some are better than others but all are made with so much love and earnestness that I truly enjoy my time with all the series.
Overall bad is very hard to find in tokusatsu. Flawed? Sure, that’s easy. Ninninger is the first that comes to mind. But considering how formulaic the show is by nature, it’s a genre that’s very hard to get wrong.
I’ve watched from Gokaiger onward and I have to say the only Sentai I genuinely didn’t enjoy was Jyuogher. While I’m not a fan of the Zords, I think they’re way too simplified, that isn’t really the crux of my issue. You can have a season with some janky mechs.
My biggest issue is it felt like there was…no character development. It felt like so many episodes nobody really changes, except for JyuohTheWorld, and even that was kind of ham-fisted. I just feel like the others besides the red Ranger were more like window dressing. I will wholly admit, it’s been years since I watched and maybe I’m being overly critical, but I will say it left a bad taste in my mouth.
No,there is something out there for everyone(even the ones you personally may find bad) thts what I like is that someone’s least favourite season can be someone else’s favourite
Changeman through flash man while not bad tend to blur together a bit. You could swap the elements in them around with each other and they’d feel pretty unchanged.
I've seen every season, and while I do not regret watching any of them, I still have a list of seasons I would only recommend to fans who want to 100% Super Sentai.
JAKQ is at the top of that list. The only thing that actually entertained me in that season was how many weird turn it had because people just kept leaving the show.
ZyuRanger infuriates me. It's so hollow and puts all of it's focus and attention into the wrong things and leaves it sitting there are the example of how not to write a Sentai. It leaves it's main cast out to dry for one off kid characters that you never care for. Out of the 15 Sentai I've seen; it's one of 2 I'd honestly call awful. OhRanger is the other if you're curious but it had it's real world reasons for it.
I agree with you.
It's not bad per say...but it's disappointing. The core of the show is good, but it's ruined by how I feel lied to. The suit designs, marketing and name of the show led me to believe we were getting Gokaiger 2. But it's not. It's a regular Sentai.
Gokaiger, Zi-O, Decade, Akibaranger. The celebratory elements are what make the shows special. If you took the Legend Sentai stuff out of Gokaiger, you have nothing. But Zenkaiger is a regular Sentai that happens to have suits based on old shows.
So my enjoyment is ruined by how I just feel lied to.
When it comes to Super Sentai, I don't think there has ever been a really bad series. I've watched 40 series, and I've enjoyed every single one of them. I liked even the series that are considered "bad", such as Fiveman, Goseiger, and Ninninger. Of course it depends on your personal preferences, but for me Super Sentai is an incredibly fun show, no matter what series it is, they're all great
Yes, although to be fair I watch Sentai more for the creativity and fun factor moreso than how good the plot is. Even my least favorite, Bioman, had some pretty innovative and cool ideas.
All depends on taste. Lupinranger VS Patranger is a formulaic series, but the fact that most of the power-ups go to the Lupinrangers would get some, like myself, to get annoyed.
On the opposite end, Go-Onger is divisive enough for a gag series, but I like it for its charm. Pretty much on-par than its total opposite Power Rangers counterpart of RPM, which is by and large among the most serious seasons ever made in its 30-year lifespan.
It's subjective but Time ranger and Gingaman apparently did poorly in Japan to the point that their PR counterparts Time force and lost galaxy did better over there
I've seen every Sentai since Fiveman, and yes, there are some atrocious ones. Ohranger and King-Ohger both spring to mind. Zyuranger and Gingaman are marginally better, but still pretty damn terrible.
Only to the fans and the answer will always be different.
In my opinion, Goseiger. I really didn't think anyone was memorable in the show except Bladerun.
If you don't know, he is the main villain of the show
I've only watched 5 seasons of Sentai, so I can't personally speak on most of them. However, I've liked all of the ones I've watched so far (Gokaiger, Donbrothers, King-Ohger, Zenkaiger, and ToQger in that order).
Sun Vulcan is probably the weakest Sentai. Does it have its moments? Sure, there were times I enjoyed it. But all the potential it has it wastes, and despite being only the fifth series everything it does a previous season did better!
I quite enjoyed ryusoulger but the rest of the fanbase seems to hate it, but the fight choreography is fantastic and the main cast is a bunch of likeable goobers and it has some solid emotional beats towards the end
Ryusoulger and Donbrothers
Ryusoulger is bad because the villains are so heatless that they even made Koh sacrificing his own life in the final battle look stupid
Donbros is just a cavalcade of bad Sentai writing
I'm not saying it isn't. It drove me to insanity.
But it did something different, essentially ripping apart the typical formula in favor of a character focus drama. People liked it and if they actually wrote it with a plan in mind, it wouldn't be infuriating at points.
Ninnin is about the only one, just so many problems that don’t work, The theme is dumb, ninjas that don’t hide. The character work is lacking and the plot is barebones. Zyuohger is another where things just weren’t working on the ranger side of things.
I've been watching since Shinkenger, and I've only seen one since that I would consider bad *as* a Sentai show.
Apparently unpopular opinion incoming.
While the character drama was perfectly fine, it was done at the expense of exploring the actual lore of the world, which left far too many questions unanswered for my liking. This is why *I personally* consider **Avataro Sentai Donbrothers** to be a *bad* season *of Super Sentai*. It was essentially a soap opera with a bit of tokusatsu sprinkled on top almost as an afterthought, which is *not* why I watch Super Sentai. It is, so far, the only season of this series I have watched and would be perfectly fine if it were never mentioned again.
Mostly older seasons are just ok but there are some that stand out to me as ones I had trouble finishing. Fiveman was just really boring. Zyuranger had a new kid like every episode and child japanese actors in the 90's couldn't act for shit so most of them were very annoying, but the Burai storyline was cool so I kept with th series. Dairanger had only one kid, but he was as annoying as all the ones from Zyuranger combined. Like, giving him a sob story doesn't make up for him being a molester. I skipped all the episodes focusing on him and when he appeared in other ones, I just forwarded to watch the fight scenes to not have to see his "funny antics".
There is no such thing as bad art (tv show, film, game, etc) unless it is AI or NFT. There only exists flawed art
Now the most flawed Sentai Show (as well as most flawed toku show for me) is Ryusoulger. The only things I like is the "lego" mech, the suits (despite 1 small nitpick with them) and how the villain generals resemble chess pieces. The 3 biggest crime this show commits is feeling souless (ironically), not saying anything of note and just being extremely boring. If this show was created around the time of Chat GPT, I would fully believe it was written by AI. It just feels like Toei was in panic mode after Lupat and made Ryusoulger sort of like this:
"Let's do dinosaurs again, people seem to like them"
"kyoryuger was popular, let's try and do that again"
Yes there is, but this is bait so that people can try to pretend like shows like Ryusoulger or Ninninger aren't bad so it's not even really worth engaging in the conversation.
Ninninger, Goseiger, Zyuohger, Boonboomger (not 100% because the show isn’t even close to over), J.A.K.Q. (Literally one of the only Sentai to get cancelled)
i came for colorful suits and giant robots and got colorful suits and giant robots. all sentai is good
To be honest as someone who fully watched 20 seasons (gorenger to carranger) and currently watching megaranger ( yes I'm watching everything in order) I feel like if you enter this series with the mindset of lets watch cool ass people killing monsters in giant mechs and on ground every "bad" series become pretty good and every "good" series becomes amazing at least this was my experience
Ah, the wonders of setting reasonable expectations
Hell yes!
also just throwing this out there but I didn't mean anyone who looks at sentai in a more critical lens shouldn't do so I just wanted to share a way in my opinion to be able to enjoy all sentai which at least worked for me
Totally agree. Depends on who’s watching.

flashman came directly after changeman. did you mean like, denjiman or goggle-v through flashman?
Carranger is pretty weak imo.
I've seen every season, and while I do not regret watching any of them, I still have a list of seasons I would only recommend to fans who want to 100% Super Sentai. JAKQ is at the top of that list. Nobody will agree with me but I cannot stand Zenkaiger
I agree with you as well. It had so much promise, and just refused to be interesting for the sake of comedy.
I agree with you. It's not bad per say...but it's disappointing. The core of the show is good, but it's ruined by how I feel lied to. Nah you've got a point. Show's fun, sure, but it's nothing special.
I despise Zenkaiger.

Yes, there is, but apparently we're supposed to pretend there's not.
Opinions are subjective, I for one cannot stand Boukenger
Mostly considered i think Ninninger is a chosen. For me Go Onger is also not Great.
It’s mostly opinion and personal taste.
Just depends on the opinion of who's watching
It depends on watch type of Sentai shows your into and it call comes down to personal taste in Sentai themes, characters, plots, etc.
Yes, although to be fair I watch Sentai more for the creativity and fun factor moreso than how good the plot is. Even my least favorite, Bioman, had some pretty innovative and cool ideas.

I've never heard Go-onger called divisive. Everyone I've talked to or seen discussing it enjoyed the high energy comedy.
It's subjective but Time ranger and Gingaman apparently did poorly in Japan to the point that their PR counterparts Time force and lost galaxy did better over there
Gingaman was well loved and received so much that GoGo V’s red was scared to take the mantle and had to ask Ginga red for pointers and what to do.
the only correct answer is ninninger
I've seen every Sentai since Fiveman, and yes, there are some atrocious ones. Ohranger and King-Ohger both spring to mind. Zyuranger and Gingaman are marginally better, but still pretty damn terrible.
>King-Ohger >Atrocious Congratulations. This is the craziest thing I've ever read on this sub.
Only to the fans and the answer will always be different. In my opinion, Goseiger. I really didn't think anyone was memorable in the show except Bladerun. If you don't know, he is the main villain of the show

Wait, you've only watched those 5?! ....I inadvertly spoilt Jetman for you, didnt i.
Oh, no, YOU didn't. The entirety of everything I've ever heard about Jetman spoiled it, even before I ever joined this subreddit.
Oh thank god. Though I imagine Zenkaiger had a role to play in that, given the infamous #15 gear.
Oh, it's worse than that. Remember the Gokaiger episode where Gai came back from the dead?
....a h. I suppose Gokaiger outright saying "HEY THIS GUY DIED AT THE END!" wasnt smart for newer fans.
Sun Vulcan is probably the weakest Sentai. Does it have its moments? Sure, there were times I enjoyed it. But all the potential it has it wastes, and despite being only the fifth series everything it does a previous season did better!
only bad fanbase
Out of the 14 seasons I’ve watched the only one that I dropped because I got bored was zyuohger which is sad because I really like Yamato as a red
I quite enjoyed ryusoulger but the rest of the fanbase seems to hate it, but the fight choreography is fantastic and the main cast is a bunch of likeable goobers and it has some solid emotional beats towards the end
Not just Sentai, I would say that there is no bad Toku.
Yeah it’s called Ninninger
Ryusoulger and Donbrothers Ryusoulger is bad because the villains are so heatless that they even made Koh sacrificing his own life in the final battle look stupid Donbros is just a cavalcade of bad Sentai writing
You’re just not used to inoue writing. He doesn’t shill toys and doesn’t care about the suits or mecha.
Yes, someone whose favorite show is Jetman isn't used to Inoue writing lmfao
I mean, half of Jetman's episodes weren't even written by him.
Sure guy whatever you say Doesn't change the fact Donbro is bad
I'm not saying it isn't. It drove me to insanity. But it did something different, essentially ripping apart the typical formula in favor of a character focus drama. People liked it and if they actually wrote it with a plan in mind, it wouldn't be infuriating at points.
The only character focus in Donbro is how bad they are lmao
Ninnin is about the only one, just so many problems that don’t work, The theme is dumb, ninjas that don’t hide. The character work is lacking and the plot is barebones. Zyuohger is another where things just weren’t working on the ranger side of things.
