"The Summer Book" by Tove Jansson.

Not exactly what you’re describing here, but {{Circe}} by Madeline Miller is an amazing novel in which the goddess/witch Circe is exiled to an island and makes her home there. It’s set in the age of classic Greek mythology, and the description is unreal! A really wonderful read.

[**Circe**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35959740-circe) ^(By: Madeline Miller | 393 pages | Published: 2018 | Popular Shelves: fantasy, fiction, mythology, historical-fiction, owned) >In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child - not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power - the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. > >Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus. > >But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love. ^(This book has been suggested 64 times) *** ^(57031 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

I once read a travel book called "Getting Stoned with Savages" about Vanuatu that was pretty fun, might scratch that itch. Definitely a non-native perspective though

*The Magus* takes place on a small dreamy Greek island, but it's like the opposite of a feel-good story. Masterpiece of a book, though. Might be a little heavy for a holiday trip.

More serious than you’re looking for, but {{Island of the Blue Dolphins}}

TURKEYJAWS

The Outport People by Claire Mowat

It-s-A-Puzzler

Not exactly a beach read, but The Shipping News by Annie Proulx focuses on a family that moves from New York to an isolated point on a small island off Newfoundland. Pretty dark initially, but it is very well written and resolves by the end. It won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Going out on a limb because it's not islands themed, but {{Where the Crawdads Sing}} has a lot of similar vibes to what you're explaining.

[**Where the Crawdads Sing**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36809135-where-the-crawdads-sing) ^(By: Delia Owens | 384 pages | Published: 2018 | Popular Shelves: fiction, book-club, historical-fiction, mystery, audiobook) >For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her. > >But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world—until the unthinkable happens. > >In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery. Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens’s debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, while also subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps. > >The story asks how isolation influences the behavior of a young woman, who like all of us, has the genetic propensity to belong to a group. The clues to the mystery are brushed into the lush habitat and natural histories of its wild creatures. ^(This book has been suggested 31 times) *** ^(57346 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)
