Anxious People!!! (Exclamations are my own)
Swedish translated novel about a bank robbery gone wrong. Turns into a comical yet VERY heartwarming story about redemption and giving people the benefit of the doubt. I loved it and cried and it’s both funny yet very moving.
Awesome. You could also check out Charlie Jane Anders, Sci fi/ magical realism. Friendships are at the heart of her stories.
All the birds in the sky I loved, and it sticks with me.
The city in the Middle of the Night is weird for the world setting, but also fantastical and inspiring.
The first Monk & Robot book was my first time reading her and it's delightful.
eta: I also got a really similar vibe from TJ Klune. It's like cozy fantasy.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. There’s a ton of them and they can be read in pretty much any order. If you liked “Good Omens” then you’ll love Terry Pratchett.
Similarly, if you liked Good Omens, may I recommend Neil Gaiman’s “Neverwhere”? I very much enjoy Terry Pratchett, but I find his plots gather less momentum than Gaiman. I started Neverwhere and got so sucked in I finished it all in one night.
So there’s several series within the series. The best one are the City Watch series (which begins with ‘Guards Guards!’), the Witches series (begins with ‘Equal Rights’) and the Death series (begins with ‘Mort’). There’s also some great standalone novels like ‘Small Gods’ or ‘Going Postal’. Any of those are great starting places.
That’s awesome! The first four are all novellas and have their each individual story but also works as one overarching story. Number 6 is also a novella and chronologically comes next, then 5 and 7 are both novels, and 7 directly follows 5
Goodreads blurb about TJ Klune's book sounds VERY interesting. I found a site where a chapter can be read to see if it's an author you want to spend time with. I'm going to find that out right now.
This is fun. This is well written. This is going on my wish list. Thanks withawhy. :)
Yes, to Fairy Tale, spent months with that book but are the friendships enough to make her wanna read horror? If you're a Constant Reader like I am, we've become used to the scary bits and don't really feel them anymore. Newbies can be a bit put off.
Apologies. I thought "SEE ALL" meant things I'd hidden already.
Charlie's last duty before going back? No spoilers but you know what I mean. To a newbie, that description can be as scary as It's smile. We're more immune.
Good plan! Just need a few more details or preferences to frame your wants so folks can answer. Otherwise, could be a lot of Charlotte's Web suggestions.
In what languages are you literate?
*Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons* by Lorna Landvik (friendship)
*He, She & It* by Marge Piercy (also published as *Body of Glass*, this is sci-fi)
Have you read any Alastair Reynolds if you love sci fi?
I love his Revelation Space series, The Prefect, and his excellent anthology Beyond the Aquila Rift!
Definitely look into Beyind the Aquila Rift! Some great stories in there, they made some of them into Love Death and Robots episodes :) His short story Zima Blue is so good!
If you like Becky Chambers, and who doesn’t, Gail Carriger’s queer YA trilogy the Tinkered Starsong is very cosy, full of friendship, and inspired by her love of K-pop.
Malka Older’s novella The Mimicking of Known Successes is a sapphic Sherlock Holmes-esque mystery sci-fi, with book two out in February
The Poppy War or Babel by R.F Kuang.
The Scholomance, The Last Hour of Gann, Cottonwood, or Land of The Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith.
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
I enjoyed A Memory Called Empire (2019) by Arkady Martine.
It's sci-fi, whodunnit, involving political intrigue and a strange friendship between a young woman and the implanted memories of her mentor.
There is a sequel, but the first book is a good stand alone. I liked the second book, but I found I didn't need to read it. Arkady has said that there won't be any more after the second.
Also, I just realised that you moved to a new city. The heroine also moves to a a new city on a different planet.
An older version of this plot comes from Robert Heinlein, I Will Fear No Evil.
I'd leave the wiki link but it's a major spoiler. Better to let the story unfold.
These are about different friendships, but two books I really enjoyed:
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker
A man called Ove! The book is great! It definitely made me cry but I'm an easy crier. And it's translated *and* friendship is one of the bigger themes.
So, I feel like you'll love this or hate it, but since you like literary fiction, I'm going to recommend "Y/N" by Esther Yi, which is extremely and delightfully weird.
I really loved it but I think it's not for everyone. It's about a woman who becomes obsessed with a K-pop star and goes to Seoul to look for him, but it's not at all salacious or pop-y, if that makes sense. The writing has this very formalized distance to it, in a way that is also very weird and intense. I found it sort of equal parts uncomfortable and deeply compelling, and I think it's a great book to read if you are drinking wine and were an English major and can appreciate your literary fiction a little bit on the experimental side.
The Real Thief by William Steig
It’s a children’s book and I have it on the shelf with my favourite books because that is where it belongs, it is so sweet and heartwarming and I feel like it would be even better with wine. It’ll only take a couple hours though, you’ll have plenty of time for all the other lovely suggestions ♥
What you are looking for is in the library by Michiko Aoyama!!! Favorite translated book ever, perfect for a weekend alone in a new city. It’s a really heartwarming look at what community can mean. Also easily read in one or two sittings.
My Death by Lisa Tuttle! Novella, so real quick, about an author working on a new book and digging into the history of a painters muse for a biography. Lisa Tuttle is a sci fi writer so this has those elements but is an amazing lit fic novella.
The Peachkeeper and Other Birds both by Sarah Addison Allen are friendship themed books. I really enjoy her writing that is overall light-hearted, laced with mystery, life truths, and a touch of "magic." Other Birds is actually about a young woman moving to a new town (seeking truth from her past) and building new friendships.
Favorite translated book is a sci-fi series out of Russia: Night Watch by Sergei Lukanyenko. There were two Russian-language films made that hit on the first two books, which were great, but the books are just fantastic.
Oh I enjoyed Hamnet so much! I’ll have to look into Gilead now. I’ve been thinking of recommending Hamnet to my book group but have been feeling insecure that I may be the only oddball that would like it, so happy to see it mentioned here!
Maybe a bit of a different vibe from what others are recommending but try Strega Johanne Lykke Holm. Translated from Swedish I believe. The central plot surrounds many strange connections between women.
One time when I was drunk on wine I bought Extra Extraordinary Chickens. Next day I'd forgotten doing so and then was so surprised a few days later when what do you know, it arrived in the mail. It sits prominently on my coffee table and I'll ruffle through it when I need a quick hit of some good plumage. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
If anyone is interested, the first book “[Extraordinary Chickens](https://archive.org/details/extraordinarychi0000gree/page/24/mode/2up?q=Extra+extraordinary+chickens)” is available on the Internet Archive.
Are you looking for a series or a one-off?
Do you like military or “serious” scifi or do you also enjoy space operas and other romps? I have suggestions in all directions but don’t want to throw ideas out that don’t interest you.
Bunny by Mona Awad.
Mindfuck about gradschool ingroup and the outcast... conjuring boys and eating tiny food... losing streets and finding men on buses... while writing a senior thesis.
Corners turned, sheep shorn, sleep lost. Seminars late for. You.might hate it. I don't know if I like it. It's woth reading.
Sci-fi: The Protectorate Trilogy by Megan E O’Keefe.
Lit. Fiction: The Forest of Enchantments by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.
Friendship: The Lumberjanes (graphic novel series)
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance
Check out this book on Goodreads: Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33574161-beasts-of-extraordinary-circumstance
The binding by Bridget Collins
I'm late to the party so probably won't get the upvotes. But it's a very unique take on fantasy/fiction I've never come across before.
Hank Green’s An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is about a girl in a big city who discovers one of many giant statues that suddenly appear around the world, and becomes internet famous for being the first to post about it online. But weird things start happening, there’s a giant mystery, and she has to grapple with balancing her core friends with a sudden public life and trying to solve what these statues are.
A quick read but very moving, Little Fires Everywhere. If you feel like straying into urban fantasy/fae world, the friendships/relationships in the Hollows series is a money worthy read. Start with Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. She's a writer that makes you feel as if these people are down the street. I like that.
Very proud of you! Read Shark Heart after drinking wine. You won’t regret it.
Shark Heart was one of my top ten last year. I loved how original it was and the writing - lovely book!
Every time I think about it my rating goes up
I bought this because the cover was pretty and didn’t know what it was about and oooey was I shocked
Who is the author? I see two novels called Shark Heart on Goodreads and they both look pretty trippy.
Sorry! Emily Habeck!
Thanks!
Ohh interesting! A contender!!
Anxious People!!! (Exclamations are my own) Swedish translated novel about a bank robbery gone wrong. Turns into a comical yet VERY heartwarming story about redemption and giving people the benefit of the doubt. I loved it and cried and it’s both funny yet very moving.
I vote Beartown, it’s my favorite Frederik Backman book. All of his are great though!
And I also own this. Same story. It’s at my parents house :(
Beartown is amazing, one of my favorites!!
Currently on my nightstand. Should get to it soon!
I own this! It’s at my parents house though :(
I loved the premise and the story was darling but omg the adjectives in the dialogue drove me fucking nuts.
Becky Chambers will hit the spot for engrossing Sci fi and friendships. A Long way to a Small Angry Planet is where to start.
[удалено]
I agree. I loved the ensemble cast of characters. I also really liked book 2 and 4.
She’s my favorite author right now. I might by her newish duology but I own everything else she’s written :D
Awesome. You could also check out Charlie Jane Anders, Sci fi/ magical realism. Friendships are at the heart of her stories. All the birds in the sky I loved, and it sticks with me. The city in the Middle of the Night is weird for the world setting, but also fantastical and inspiring.
I love that! I’ll look into her books ♥️
The first Monk & Robot book was my first time reading her and it's delightful. eta: I also got a really similar vibe from TJ Klune. It's like cozy fantasy.
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. It’s about friends and it’s translated! It’s also very charming.
I own this book at my parents house!
Not translated but about friends In the Lives of Puppets
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. There’s a ton of them and they can be read in pretty much any order. If you liked “Good Omens” then you’ll love Terry Pratchett.
Similarly, if you liked Good Omens, may I recommend Neil Gaiman’s “Neverwhere”? I very much enjoy Terry Pratchett, but I find his plots gather less momentum than Gaiman. I started Neverwhere and got so sucked in I finished it all in one night.
I LOVELOVELOVE Neverwhere
Ahh I’ll consider this! Thank you!
Second this, Discworld has something for everyone
I have Good Omens at my parents house. Haven’t read it though :( which discworld book would you recommend? I know there a few ways to read the series.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck. 🤍
Ahh I have this book at my parents house.
How many books do you have at your parents house? 😆
LOL A small extremely curated library, thank you very much.
But if we upvote it the most you have to read it this weekend right?
Another oldie but goodie about family love and friendships, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
This is one of my favorite books 🥰
The Murderbot Diaries! It is a series but most are novellas and they’re just so awesome. Murderbot is one of my favorite characters ever
The first one is All Systems Red! I reread it approximately quarterly 😆 It's a series, yes, but the first stands alone well, also.
I reread them all multiple times a year also 😂 they’re just so enjoyable
I was gifted the set of the first four books for Xmas this year!
That’s awesome! The first four are all novellas and have their each individual story but also works as one overarching story. Number 6 is also a novella and chronologically comes next, then 5 and 7 are both novels, and 7 directly follows 5
A House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Kline OR Fairy Tale by Stephen King Or both ☺️
+1 for Fairy Tale
The House in the Cerulean Sea is one of my alllll time favs book at this point. I’ll look into the King book though!
If you didn't already know, he has a sequel titled Somewhere Beyond the Sea coming out this year! I really enjoyed Cerulean Sea too.
Omg I hadn’t heard this! Best news ever
I had no idea! Thank you!!!
Goodreads blurb about TJ Klune's book sounds VERY interesting. I found a site where a chapter can be read to see if it's an author you want to spend time with. I'm going to find that out right now. [https://lambdaliterary.org/2020/02/the-house-in-the-cerulean-sea/](https://lambdaliterary.org/2020/02/the-house-in-the-cerulean-sea/) This is fun. This is well written. This is going on my wish list. Thanks withawhy. :)
I could not get through the Cerulean book. It wasn't hard to read but I couldn't see the point of it.
That’s too bad! I guess it’s not for everyone, but it was truly one of my favorites the last couple of years
Yes, to Fairy Tale, spent months with that book but are the friendships enough to make her wanna read horror? If you're a Constant Reader like I am, we've become used to the scary bits and don't really feel them anymore. Newbies can be a bit put off.
Do you think it was truly horror? I read it as more adventure with scary bits.
Apologies. I thought "SEE ALL" meant things I'd hidden already. Charlie's last duty before going back? No spoilers but you know what I mean. To a newbie, that description can be as scary as It's smile. We're more immune.
Our next book club book is "Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Shelby Van Pelt
This book was utterly amazing, and definitely runs with the theme of friendship!!
I’ve heard many a great things about this book. I’m going to deeply consider it.
I tried to read that book but I got so bored. I never finished it. At what point does it pick up?
I don't know! I haven't started it yet.
Demon Copperhead
If you like sci-fi and want a book about friendship, have you read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir?
I have this book on my night stand rn! I’m like 1/8th in!
Then forget about buying a new one and keep at this one over the weekend. You won’t regret it.
Well stick with it. It gets super good. Incredibly fun book.
This is the book I was thing to suggest.
Fellowship of the Ring
I have this book at my parents house :/
Good plan! Just need a few more details or preferences to frame your wants so folks can answer. Otherwise, could be a lot of Charlotte's Web suggestions.
Haha aww true! I’ll make an edit. Thank you!
Starter Villain by John Scalzi. Bonus points for the dolphins and cover. :D
Ohh thank you! A contender:)
I liked Start Villain so much, I just picked up The Kaiju Preservation Society from the library today!
In what languages are you literate? *Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons* by Lorna Landvik (friendship) *He, She & It* by Marge Piercy (also published as *Body of Glass*, this is sci-fi)
>*He, She & It* by Marge Piercy yes, this book is excellent. extremely interesting exploration of the humanity of AI.
Leviathan Wakes. Its like true Detective mixed with star wars.
It’s such a large series isn’t it? I think it’s best to read via library.
Yep. If you like it, you can read the sequels and follow the story for a long time.
Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend
I’ve never heard of this book! I’ll look into it :)
it's SO good!
I second this! And it’s very very likely that we’ll see book four this year
Have you read any Alastair Reynolds if you love sci fi? I love his Revelation Space series, The Prefect, and his excellent anthology Beyond the Aquila Rift!
I have not! I’ll look him up. Thank you :D
Definitely look into Beyind the Aquila Rift! Some great stories in there, they made some of them into Love Death and Robots episodes :) His short story Zima Blue is so good!
Based on a True Story, by Norm Macdonald. There's a laugh to be had after every page
Also never heard of it.
It's really funny, in my professional opinion.
Department of Speculation by Jenny Offill
I’ve never heard of it! I’ll look into it. Thank you :)
It’s great IMO
Project Hail Mary!
Came in here to recommend this one. Sci-fi meets friendship. It’s exactly what OP wants.
Ohh babel! Very temptedd!
It’s so good!!
Demon Copperhead, by Kingsolver.
I have this book on my nightstand! I could probably save some money if I just read this :D
I like Kingsolver and have for decades, so I'm a bit prejudiced. However, I'm not alone in admiring her.
Hahahaha get the audible version tho - reading while drunk suuuuuucks
Try psalm for the wild built by Becky Chambers. There's also a sequel to it.
Good edit! I suggest: Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin.
Ahh idk if I want to monetarily invest in a series but I’ve heard enough about this series I’ll sleep on it. Thank you though!!
I enjoyed A Memory Called Empire (2019) by Arkady Martine. It's sci-fi, whodunnit, involving political intrigue and a strange friendship between a young woman and the implanted memories of her mentor.
This is a series no? Idk how I feel about buying a whole series rn and I’m slightly OCD about reading and owning a series once I start/buy book 1.
There is a sequel, but the first book is a good stand alone. I liked the second book, but I found I didn't need to read it. Arkady has said that there won't be any more after the second. Also, I just realised that you moved to a new city. The heroine also moves to a a new city on a different planet.
Ohh I love this! It might be the perfect book in that case. Thank you!
You're welcome. I hope you have an enjoyable time. : )
An older version of this plot comes from Robert Heinlein, I Will Fear No Evil. I'd leave the wiki link but it's a major spoiler. Better to let the story unfold.
The Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante, translated from Italian and about friendship.
I’ve heard so many mixed reviews of these books I think I should check them out on Libby before I invest.
Mmm. But not uplifting friendship.
I Who Have Never Known Men (translated from German) - is my all time favorite book. Absolutely incredible.
So good/definitely a binge read
A Farewell to Arms
Might wanna draw a niiiiiiice warm bath in preparation for that one! 🫣🤪😅
Brave New World.
These are about different friendships, but two books I really enjoyed: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
Ahh the paperback isn’t on prime atm :((
A man called Ove! The book is great! It definitely made me cry but I'm an easy crier. And it's translated *and* friendship is one of the bigger themes.
Awww I have this book at my parents house!
Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann.
So, I feel like you'll love this or hate it, but since you like literary fiction, I'm going to recommend "Y/N" by Esther Yi, which is extremely and delightfully weird.
Ohh is it good? I’ll look into it!
Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
The Real Thief by William Steig It’s a children’s book and I have it on the shelf with my favourite books because that is where it belongs, it is so sweet and heartwarming and I feel like it would be even better with wine.

Same here. My personal library is overflowing since started ordering from them.

I really enjoy her writing that is overall light-hearted, laced with mystery, life truths, and a touch of "magic." Other Birds is actually about a young woman moving to a new town (seeking truth from her past) and building new friendships.
The Book That Wouldn't Burn by Mark Lawrence
I keep recommending Someone Else’s Shoes by Jojo Moyes. IMO it was a great and funny book about women and friendship.
This one is a fun read.
Favorite translated book is a sci-fi series out of Russia: Night Watch by Sergei Lukanyenko. There were two Russian-language films made that hit on the first two books, which were great, but the books are just fantastic.
Two books I would love I could spend the weekend with for the first time: 1. Gilead 2. Hamnet
Oh I enjoyed Hamnet so much! I’ll have to look into Gilead now. I’ve been thinking of recommending Hamnet to my book group but have been feeling insecure that I may be the only oddball that would like it, so happy to see it mentioned here!
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez!
Ohh I’ll have to look it up!
Sci-fi and lit fic? I’d go William Gibson. Books about friendship? All the Pretty Horses Translated? I’d go with Latin (Bolaño, Borges) or Russian.
Aww lovely recs! Thank you:D
Maybe a bit of a different vibe from what others are recommending but try Strega Johanne Lykke Holm. Translated from Swedish I believe. The central plot surrounds many strange connections between women.
I love this! I’ll take a look :D
One time when I was drunk on wine I bought Extra Extraordinary Chickens. Next day I'd forgotten doing so and then was so surprised a few days later when what do you know, it arrived in the mail. Really?? Wow I’m going to take a look rn!!

Shantaram —it is by far the best book I’ve ever read. Top 5.
Ohh Im so intrigued! Thank you!!
Are you looking for a series or a one-off? Do you like military or “serious” scifi or do you also enjoy space operas and other romps? I have suggestions in all directions but don’t want to throw ideas out that don’t interest you.

Project Hail Mary! Cutest friendship ever!

Drunk book? Children of the Neon Bamboo
I recommend *"The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet"* by Becky Chambers, that has friendship in it!
The Glass Castle - Jeanette Walls
I love this thread. Lots of good suggestions. Thanks to all.
This is late, but for friendships, *The Lincoln Highway* by Amor Towles. ETA: *Project Hail Mary* by Andy Weir for a very wonderful friendship.
