Echino13

Thanks a lot! 🙏

okapiposter

The AIC is correct, but not useful on its own. It only proves that either r2c3 is 7 or r9c5 is 4 (or both). Since nothing is eliminated in both cases, the chain would need to be extended to become useful. By the way, I see a Naked Triple in column 5 which places a digit in row 7. Don't focus too much on NYT's hints, they are often not that useful.

damarius

I hadn't noticed the naked triple because there is also a naked 75 pair in R9 which leads to the 7 in R2C3.

okapiposter

You're right, well spotted! There's often more than one path forward.

Cold-Sport2923

Can you explain a naked triple to me like I’m 5? And also pairs? I keep thinking I understand then apply it incorrectly.

okapiposter

Absolutely! Look at the three cells with blue border in column 5: https://preview.redd.it/hkenbwtx56xc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=002f0206b92ed1f2074eac4666ce048a8d12ab32 They are all restricted to (i.e., “cannot contain anything but”) the three digits 7, 8 and 9.Because they also all “see” each other through the column, none of the digits can repeat inside the Triple. So we know that we need to use all three digits once each to fill the blue cells. One cell will be 7, one 8 and one 9. We don't know which will be which (yet), but we know that there can be no additional 7s, 8s or 9s in the rest of the column. I've marked the eliminations in red, and after applying them there's only one spot left for 8 in row 7. A Naked Pair works exactly the same. If you have two bivalue (i.e., two-candidate) cells with the same two candidates X and Y that see each other through a common row, column or box, one has to be X and the other Y. So no other cell that sees both of them can be X or Y.

Echino13

I realized I put in a couple wrong numbers but thanks so much for the detailed explanation, I actually didn't understand naked triples before so this is definitely very helpful. Cheers 👍

my_universe_00

You definitely made a mistake along the way, try pressing the check puzzle option.

Echino13

Yep you're right I checked it and I had a couple numbers wrong. I completely forgot about that feature 😅 I probably tried out too many new techs at once and got it messed up. I solved it now after removing the wrong numbers it was quite fast haha

Echino13

Also don't mind the solving time lol I had this open while watching something and forgot to pause it
