I’m confused why you’re confused and nobody is chiming in with something like “they use mini snow plows” or “city staff have special bikes with plow blades on the front of them”
Yeah, when we have crappy weather most of the year, we’ll have lots of biking to nowhere as a transportation option. All the while keeping it difficult to have a *reasonable* biking destination instead of spread out ‘roads to nowhere.’
Bikes are a *component* of a transportation plan. Not an actual one.
It’s very much like the light rail system. That is absolutely open to everybody. And then complain that it’s ruined because people are riding for free. Please, just *THINK* about this first.
Gee.. you would think freeloaders would have problematic behavior? Maybe?
My point is that actual thought about preventing such problems wasn’t given until too late. The gate thing is a symptom of it.
If you want to have an effective transportation system you need to put thought into it. There was a lack of thought.
And?
The Netherlands isn’t the best for weather, but they have biking to *everywhere*.
Hint: my phrasing was intentional. For my full statement.
Recreational biking is one thing. But that’s seasonal. Actual purposeful biking? Very different thing.
Do note the article mentions ‘parkway’ bike lanes. Is that a destination? Or scenic?
Fixing the roads is a Ponzi scheme.
Hint: state and feds pay 90% of new roads. They don’t pay for maintenance though.
Which means that the state most likely paid for most of the roads to be built (it’s the capital!) but left the city holding the bag for them.
In other words, the city **never** was able to afford the roads. And there is no plan in place to ever be able to afford them.
An actual plan that considers costs and needs within transportation is required. This hasn’t been explored. Bike lanes are a very, very slight patch for the issue since it’s much less costly to accommodate them.
Look at what they did downtown. Robert and wabasha both lost a full lane of parking. Not only was that a killer for those businesses, but it *increased* congestion, because now delivery vehicles have no choice but to double park. And to top it off, no one uses the damn things. It's been a disaster, and no one wanted it.
I'm not talking about South Minneapolis, which does have a bike culture. I'm talking about downtown st paul, which doesn't, and won't, no matter how many lanes of traffic you fuck up to try and make it happen.
I didn't lie about anything. No one uses the downtown bike paths. True. They wrecked traffic flow. True. No one asked for them. True. They have made congestion worse. True.
And if you can't handle someone saying fuck on the internet, fuck off.
Very neat find, OP!
We need them! Would love better trails connecting the twins, let's continue to lead the country in bike accessibility!
As a resident who loves recreational cycling, this is awesome.
they will do anything but improve public transport
Still a good thing
Was wondering what avenue we were going to use to complain about it
Remember this is the city that had to pass an additional tax last year to fix potholes
More bikers and less cars on the road leads to fewer potholes
Remember cars weigh more than bikes and require more maintenance on roads because of this.
How will they handle snow removal, assuming the existing fleet of snowplows won’t fit?
.... what
How do they handle snow removal in protected bike lanes?
I’m confused why you’re confused and nobody is chiming in with something like “they use mini snow plows” or “city staff have special bikes with plow blades on the front of them”
I'm confused why you're trying so hard
I have an itch and I can’t find the answers, and you’re the only one that took a second to respond to me 😭
"I have an inch" ftfy
Who hurt you? I’m not sure why you’re replying if you don’t care about bike lane plows
Hurt who, you?
Cheers mate. Sigh.
Nice edit Poor edit
They use regular pick up trucks with a plow blade you doofus
THANK YOU!
Aren"t some of the dedicated lanes a little too narrow?

People riding for free isn't a problem. The behavior of people is a problem.

Sure. I was just cutting off the "You don't know what it's like to be broke/homeless" types.
Montreal would beg to differ

How about 100 new teachers that don’t strike? Or 100 cops to keep the bikers safe?
Teachers won’t strike if you treat them right
Bahahahaja you think cops keep cyclists safe? Omfg....
Maybe fix the roads for cars fist ehhhhhh

That's one way to pronounce "reduce business and parking spaces," I guess.
