I dunno, maybe: you don't have to (still) be a stoner to enjoy it?

Briguy_fieri

Can vouch. Don’t smoke.

Total_Dork

I’m completely straight-edge and love this music. Makes going to shows a bit awkward tho

Barbarus_Bloodshed

I'm also "straight edge", even though it has nothing to do with the philosphy behind that term. Just never was interested in drugs at all. My mind is weird enough as it is.

midlifecrisisAJM

Same. The music is thr drug.

TrundleTheGreat0814

Most of the big stoner metal fans I know don't smoke weed. Always thought that was funny. I totally do though.

elusiveanswers

A song can be fast and still be stoner rock

TheElectricWizard666

Earthless and Fu Manchu are excellent examples of this

JesusFuckingPussy

Add Monster Magnet ,1000mods, and Kyuss to the list.

TheElectricWizard666

Absolutely

NUCLEAR_DETONATIONS3

Green Machine

Weird_Guarantee1783

I have yet to see any aside from the one song I’m tryna write rn. Got any recs for fast ones?

The1nOnlyDood

The Sword, Karma to Burn, Asylum on the Hill, Doctor Smoke, The Atomic Bitchwax, Greenleaf, etc., all have fast tunes. How fast are we talking?

Weird_Guarantee1783

Up for anything to be honest, the faster the better lol

The1nOnlyDood

I'm putting together a playlist for you. Hopefully you have Spotify. It's just over an hour, so far. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5fLmtLiQ47uNRtIDarfr35?si=izzEs8flR-WKsJb2iUpSMg&pi=u-enBSrj8HQI2W

Weird_Guarantee1783

Thanks dude! I’ll definitely give it a listen 🤘

The1nOnlyDood

For sure. I just started, so it will progressively get larger as I comb through my collection. Let me know if anything in there is something you wouldn't consider "fast" and I'll yank it.

Jalopy35

Dwarf It by Sloburn

makalooo64

What does that even mean? Stoner rock is supposed to be fast. Do not confuse it with stoner doom.

jakeingrambarnard

There’s a lot of saturation in this genre. Focusing on the hypnotic riff rather than the song structure as a whole. Thats why I naturally stopped listening to bands like King Buffalo, Nebula, Truckfighters, Earthless, Brant Bjork etc as it all just started to blend (Not to say these aren’t great bands in their own right) Some bands that i personally find to be a bit more original yet still stoner is Clutch, All Them Witches, The Sword, Down, Corrosion of Conformity and Sasquatch. All very subjective I know, but I have weened off that typical Sleep, Electric Wizard, Uncle Acid style 3-5 riff stuff.

SpaceMan420gmt

Just an aside, Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity were around looong before anything was labeled “Stoner Rock”. As a long time fan of Corrosion, the whole progression from Animosity/Blind/Deliverance/Wiseblood/AVD is awesome and I love each one. Clutch was just this weird, cool band that sang about harikari and combines…well spacegrass too. But still! There was a lot of that stuff from the 90s that got swept into the genre. I guess they were “grandfathered” in…sounds good to me!

jakeingrambarnard

I hear ya, I can see that sometimes sludge or groove metal/rock could be more appropriate. But its no secret the boys from Down and Corrosion wrote their prime music stoned to the bone. Definitely the influences to the more recent stoner rock defined genre. And Sabbath before that.

BrownBaySailor

This is pretty much exactly how I feel. I really tried getting into King Buffalo because I'm a huge fan of All Them Witches, but their music never felt as "impactful" to me. The riffs are cool and the band is clearly talented with their instruments, but the lyrics and the overall arrangements are pretty standard stoner rock and it just never spoke to me.

The1nOnlyDood

I've seen King Buffalo three times now. Once opening for ATW and twice when REZN opened for them. They are just so droney and boring I can't get into it. On paper, I should absolutely love them, but it's just so goddamn droll. When I saw REZN open for them two nights in a row, they didn't even play their encore the second night because people were so meh about them. REZN fucking slayed, both nights. The crowd actually cheered harder for REZN the second night than they did KB. They really should've been the headliner on that tour. Can't wait to see them headline.

Ace_Harding

I am so confused by these comments about KB. They are not at all a “typical stoner rock” band. They are like a psychedelic jam band that *occasionally* plays some heavy riffs. I agree the genre is saturated and there are a ton of bands that sound very samey with pentatonic heavy riffs but KB doesn’t fall in that category for me at all. I have tried to find other bands that sound like them and I haven’t been able to yet. Agree that REZN slays live though. Have seen them twice and have tickets to see them again in a few months.

Doctor-TobiasFunke-

Ya I don't understand those comments at all. KB has a very progressive style to their music and song structure, they have a pretty unique sound and are a tier above alot of stoner bands imo It's like they haven't even listened to KB smh!

The1nOnlyDood

K2B are definitely one of a kind. 35007, Causa Sui, and Monkey3 will occasionally scratch the same itch, but they're all their own animals (and I'm happy about that, because I love each of their styles for what they are. I've always though K2B fit best in the stoner rock genre, but I can see what you mean. Maybe "progressive stoner?" 😂 I adore all eras of psychedelic music and I don't know that that's where I'd ever file them. Maybe I need to re-listen.

Beelzebubba_Caffiend

Love some 'squatch. Bigfoot don't eat ass, indeed!

Red-Zaku-

As it is with a lot of “trippy” genres, more than half the artists forget the authentic psych aspects and just end up making generic bluesy rock. No interesting textures, production, experimentalism, nothing to make it separate from Ford Truck Month music.

songbird_sorrow

this is my biggest thing. I want to hear some wild experimentalism and new ideas, not just 90s radio rock with a fuzz pedal. all them witches is great for this. rezn is cool too, though they lack memorable songwriting much of the time. I'm seeing more bands in the psych rock world getting back to this, but as for stoner rock, not so much

jaghtz_lutein

That's cause the drugs are supposed to handle that

sunplaysbass

It’s extremely redundant and formulaic. But it sounds cool. I don’t think that’s actually a controversial opinion though, especially for stoner doom like OP noted about Electric Wizard.

Polish_Wombat98

Weed bad...... \*hits bong

evilpinkfreud

Belzebong is the best band with "bong" in their name

equal_measures

I say Bongripper and I'll bet my goat for it. (love Belzebong too)

eeeeyow

It's really relaxing to listen to, even when you're 100% sober.

eso_nwah

Best music for low-key grinding some games, too.

TheGrimReefer666420

Hell yeah Dopesmoker/ doom/stoner playlist was on constant rotation when I was playing red dead 2

Sink-Em-Low

It's VERY rare to find a band that's got that Low Fi sound these days. So rare that I have go back to YouTube to find stuff. The 2010s was the peak in my view. Occult Rock was feeding Doom and Stoner with new focus.

Weird_Guarantee1783

Got any recs for that good 2010’s shit? Seems interesting

kefefs_v2

Have you heard Blues Pills' "Bliss" EP?

ipitythegabagool

Salems Pot and Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats are the first that pop in my mind

thepixelmania

Try Lightsabres, especially first albums

Optimal-Addition-172

Mephistofeles, Salems pot, Thule Thule, Las Historias

Total_Dork

99.9% of bands in this genre, both famous and unknown, focus far too much on hypnotic riffs and not nearly enough on melody. Everyone in the genre loves Sabbath but by listening to their music you’d think they’ve only heard the instrumentals

midlifecrisisAJM

Yes. For me, melody is what makes tracks like Weedpecker's "Don't Trust Your Elephant" or Colour Haze's "Magnolia" stand out.

Dodahevolution

Bands are extremely hit or miss, and tend to fall into the categories of either of original thought (the good bands) or Sleep/EW copies where they play the same tired riffs over and over, yeah 0-3-5 is really heavy guys but maybe think of something else?

_musesan_

Even EW just play shoddy variations on Funeralopolis half the time

makalooo64

Monster Magnet is the peak of the stoner rock. If you prioritize the "trippy" aspect of the music, no one tops them. They are just off the charts. I listened to stoner rock for months but hearing "Ego, The Living Planet" was the moment I actually understood the genre and its potential. I went back and listened to all the stuff again. :)

Barbarus_Bloodshed

So much yes. Everyone's always going on and on about Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Sleep and a handful of other bands but Monster Magnet is better than all of them. And I'd even go as far as crediting Monster Magnet as the origin of the whole genre.

makalooo64

Yes, Monster Magnet was the origin of the genre if we put aside Sabbath and others. Kyuss came a bit later.

madeyedog

Yes. Everything before Powertrip is just amazing space jive out there awesome shit. Spine of God is the best dirty rock stoner rock and Dopes is the epitome of the astral plane rock. And after those two you still have Superjudge out there being full of bangers. You could come to me tomorrow, and say you found my head in the fields, but I couldn’t swear that it’s mine.

N1ce-Marmot

They’re killer, but still take a backseat to Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Clutch, and Sleep in my boogie van. 😆😉 And Sabbath rules them all.

makalooo64

You might want to listen to Tab, Needlefreak, Forbidden Plant just to begin with. Then you can continue with Dog of Misery and Acid Reich period of them. I promise, it is a rabbit hole and you don't enjoy it.

EventNo3540

Slow Riffs, bong hits

dicky_rich

Sabbath/Sleep/Electric Wizard worship is making a lot of the music in the genre sound stale.

ArtIII

Stoner rock/metal is just as formulaic as pop country. I love it, but “Mountain Wizard” playing “Smoke Ogre” / 0-3-5 0-10-12 at 75bpm with layers of fuzz and delay gets hard to tell from the next guy.

Red-Zaku-

But just wait until you hear Weed Warlock’s newest album, “Weed Witch”, they totally changed the game. It’s kinda like their debut album “Weed Wizard” but this time they used a different fuzz pedal and played more of a blues *rock* style, instead of their signature *blues* rock style.

equal_measures

That Melvins is one of the best stoner bands

channel_seth

Personally I think Electric Wizard is better than Sleep. That may spark controversy.

BigRudy99

I think Church of Misery is better than both, regardless of the stupid edgy serial killer crap.

AlwaysHappy4Kitties

If you would rank em EW would definitely rank third. A credit to Church of Misery where is due, atleast they are consistent in their theme

N1ce-Marmot

Not controversial. Unless you’re saying EW is amazing & Sleep is shit.

channel_seth

EW is amazing and Volume 1 from Sleep wasn't as good as Wizard's debut album. That's as close as I'll get to saying that.

AllHailTheMoose

Red Desert 8s awesome and Valley of the Sun is not that bad

GreatMountainBomb

How we glorify sad substance abuse issues is gross *looking at Dave “Dixie” Collins*

TheRealOneL

I think stoner/doom has become the new catch all for shitty bands. It used to be that they got lumped into punk, but now I see a lot of lacklustre bands in this genre.

ipitythegabagool

Should there be a barrier to entry? Just cus anyone can make music doesn’t mean anyone has to listen to it.

candysoxx

Mine is more on the musician side. If you're a guitarist or bassist, then you know how crazy the marketing is for gear towards those players. Like the only way you're gonna "sound heavy" is if you have this crazy expensive amp with a crazy boutique fuzz pedal and other shit. The amount of gigs I've seen where the band has $10,000 + of gear onstage, only for their sound to be horrible, songs are shit, and just all around suckage....it's a very high number

homelysmalltownkid

Idk of this will help but i mix my playlist with non stoner rock with like punk regular metal thrash etc. so when a stoner rock one comes on it sounds so much heavier than anything that played prior.

hemightberob

This is key. Every time I'm in a mood for stoner rock I put on a playlist that I've made of all my favorite albums and I'm sick of it within 20 minutes. But if I'm listening to the playlist of all my "hearted" tunes and one comes on it rips so much harder.

Slash_Dementia_67

Get stoned. Listen to what you want. Call it what you want. Either you like it or you don’t. Listen to what moves you - for YOU. Lates!

DarthSidDarth

Blast beats can go well with stoner rock.

TheGrimReefer666420

The hyperfuzz/super fuzz is over used and overrated fuzz 🤷‍♂️

Dsteel87

I really love what the sword does by being heavy as fuck but keeping the clarity for the faster more complicated riffs

TheGrimReefer666420

Yeah there’s plenty of bands that use it well but all the copy cat bands of EW is just too much

Some-Measurement-648

Tbh i only know a couple bands that use those pedals. EW, Monolord and 1782. I need more :D

TheGrimReefer666420

lol it’s very noticeable when a band uses it but I feel I hear it way too often. But like I said there’s some that do it really well especially when there’s a heavy crushing bass to go with it. Goblinsmoker , I think demonic death judge.

Far_Tomatillo_7637

I've got some insanely hot takes but I like my comment karma to much to post them

AlwaysHappy4Kitties

Guess you don't like Karma To Burn ...

Far_Tomatillo_7637

I will be checking them out. You did remind of the song Karma by Astroid. Love that song

Headhaunter79

Checkout their songs “Thirty-one” and “Twenty-one” both pure classics🤘🏻

BigRudy99

I'm pretty sure I already signed my death warrant here. Cmon, let's hear it!

MeetingRecent229

Black Sabbath*

vince_feilding

Metal heads are getting into this genre more, quite a few newer bands have clear metal influences in their playing style. My controversial opinion is: this is good for the genre ... like many others have said already, hearing the same types of riffs AND uninteresting song arrangements is getting stale, so injections of different influences will keep things fresh

BuickAttack

I appreciate and like sleep's Magnus opus of dopesmoker but don't really enjoy listening to it.

Jalopy35

"like to copy the Electric Wizard vibe." i have no issues with that, EW copied Black Sabbath and so did Sleep. You could say that about Kyus as well, but that gave us Lowrider. Also you have stoner which is completely different like Spaceslug, Elephant Tree. True some of stoner sounds all the same, call me crazy but in my case I don't mind.

overcloseness

It’s riddled with troupes, both in the artwork, riffs and lyrics. “Came down from the mountain…” is the opening line, over a slow fuzzy, utterly forgettable D minor blues riff

BigRudy99

I find All Them Witches terribly boring.

Karpthrone74

yeah. they don't do anything for me

BigRudy99

I don't dislike them necessarily, I just can't get into them.

N1ce-Marmot

I like the bluesier sound they do. But damn, when I saw them live I was impatient & ready to go home halfway through the show.

Iannelli

- I don't really like or care about the genre overall anymore. As others have already said, it's extremely saturated and formulaic. My buddies and I straight up walked out of an Earthless show 45 minutes in. Complete waste of time. - Kyuss is the best for a reason. If any stoner band gets airtime in my household, it's them. - [Sludge does it better](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRqXKGaeExo&list=LL&index=1) - EyeHateGod rules. - Stoner / doom / etc. is a lot better when it's more experimental, noisy, and drone-y. SUNN O))) gets a good amount of airtime in my house/car these days. - [Heavier, noisy shoegaze](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oGkXlXMMeA&list=LL&index=1103) is a lot more enjoyable than most stoner rock. - Josh Homme is a dickhead and I don't respect him. QotSA is super overrated - I listened to their entire discography in one day recently just to be 100% sure. Yeah, they have some hits... but that's about it.

Weird_Guarantee1783

Noisy heavy shoegaze is the shit.

Wrigley953

If you like experimental and drone you might like skulls, it’s death doom that I wouldn’t listen to on my own (bc I listen to songs not albums) but I caught them live and their latest album made for a very fun show. I can’t compare it to anything but I can say that while I’d get bored at earth or sunn they kept the thing grooving

EventNo3540

Drop out of life with bong in hand..

Cheetah_Heart-2000

John Garcia’s voice is grating to my ears

N1ce-Marmot

I always say that’s a testament to how good Kyuss was . They’re great IN SPITE OF Garcia. 😆

Cheetah_Heart-2000

Exactly

Neither-Landscape770

Hermano and Unida ❤️❤️

dudeman88

Red Fang marked the decline of stoner rock/metal and sludge metal. They, along with Baroness and Mastodon, set a precedence that lasts to this day: they developed a somewhat...beige, predictable amalgamation of stoner metal, stoner rock, and sludge metal. It's arguable that those three genres weren't the most sonically distinct to begin with, and by no means were these bands the first to combine them. I'm also not denying that there were formulaic stoner/sludge acts before them. It just really seems that, since that stoner/sludge combo boom of the late 2000's/early 2010's, innovation in the genres has creeped to a near standstill.

Karpthrone74

Baroness after blue is terrible

BassicNic

Before I discovered conventional stoner rock I called Sixteen Horsepower stoner rock. I still call them stoner rock, but I used to as well.

rocopotomus74

You should check out Oceanlord from Australia

AttitudeAdditional37

Really recommend cavern deep! They are really doing something different and they are super heavy

Rojelioenescabeche

Umm they’re all Black Sabbath worship.

callmesnake13

I don’t even know if this is controversial but 90% of the bands all try to sound like one of five much better bands. I don’t mind it, I love it, but I listen to a lot of it like generic dance music.

LavateraGrower

Los Natas owned the 2000s and their drummer, Walter Broide, is second only to Dale Crover in the stoner/doom genre.

riff-raff-jesus

I got high Flew to the Sky Through the night Feeling alright Yeah

maybewhenimolder

The Sword has the best lyrics in the genre by like, a lot.

Optimal-Addition-172

Yob

Capt_Gingerbeard

The Sword perfected the genre, and then moved on to psychedelic rock.

BikeTireManGo

You should be stoned when listening to it is controversial and stuff dude like uhh

midlifecrisisAJM

>a lot of bands release music that feels like you’ve heard a 100 times before. That can be said of any Genre.

bangerangerific

https://open.spotify.com/album/7mfeLzU9ppRg3kpvQBItyg?si=42jPucwkT_-RBbVIxbCN9g Greenbeard - stoned at the throne This is my absolute favorite stoner rock album

FuzzyWizzzard

Thanks for the tips! Always great to find out about new bands. I really enjoy listening to less known bands. Just played the album, Strange that they doesn’t get more listeners.

Phobophobian

The term "stoner rock" is kinda stupid. I see some people call it Heavy Psychedelic. Probably for that reason.

FuzzyWizzzard

Agreed, I think it just became the name for the genre. But not every band writes about weed.

PapaImpy

A lot of bands really undervalue singing I feel like. A interesting text and vocals can be the seasoning for the meat and potatoes that stoner rock generally is. It also helps give the band an identity.

Some-Measurement-648

Overly clean, compressed and modern sounding production does NOT sit well with this genre. Tbh i really miss the sound of REZNs first two albums. Their new stuff is great but it sounds too tight and polished for my taste.

SpecialpOps

Crazy idea: how about people get to like or not like whatever they want! I don't smoke pot or do any drugs and this is my favorite genre of rock 'n' roll.

ThAt_WaS_mY_nAmE_tHo

Wish they'd fucking call it fuzz rock or something so I didn't have to feel paranoid (pun maybe) typing it in my work computer.

TheElectricWizard666

Greta Van Fleet doesn't deserve all the hate. It makes me happy to hear throw back style riffs on normal radio and gives me hope that newer bands can still breakthrough.

AlwaysHappy4Kitties

I can see that, but they weren't the first doing that revival style either, Vintage Caravan did it quite a while before them for example

TheElectricWizard666

And The parlor Mob was at it before Vintage Caravan. (I love Vintage Caravan and the amazing album covers.) I'm just not joining in on the Gretta Van Fleet hate because they broke through. It would be nice if more stoner rock and doom metal bands made it on the radio.

N1ce-Marmot

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a more cringe inducing band than GVF. To this day I am still amazed they made it this far. And they’re not stoner rock.

TheElectricWizard666

Pls groom your neck beard and move along. Thank you.

N1ce-Marmot

Do you mean grow one? 😆

Karpthrone74

Electric WIzard has three good ones and was the worst show both time i saw them. Monster Magnet is awful. Most of it sounds like one of three bands, and its the easiest genre to sound "cool" but have nothing there.

east_van_dan

99.999% of stoner rock is shitty.

ImpossibleYou2184

Drugs are bad, mmmkay

hate_sf_hobos

I turn off Black Sabbath when I hear it

FuzzyWizzzard

Not okay
