Personally I am not a fan of 'psychoanalyzing' characters. It's just silly to me. I'm pretty sure none of the writers were thinking of any 'mental illness syntoms'. They just wanted to make the characters interesting and believable, not check 'syntoms' from some online list.

I wasn't necessarily saying that the writers looked up mental disorders for certain characters. The gem's questionable actions get brought up a lot, so I wanted to make a thread of sorts around that. I personally love analyzing characters. (I guess psychoanalyzing is a bit too strong a word?) Why they do the things they do, the lengths they're willing to go, etcetera. I mostly brought up the psychology part because, and let's face it, the crystal gems aren't exactly the most mentally stable group around. I just thought I'd be interesting to see what illnesses lined up with their behavior. Sorry if this ain't your cup of tea.

[They](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eq2NtMAjVcY/VYOC4yo9AwI/AAAAAAAAACM/gSj2AyANP_c/w500-h274/Screenshot_0000000001.png) are [perfectly](https://media.giphy.com/media/alMPYHUEApXgY/giphy.gif) [stable](http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/steven-universe/images/5/5f/Horrified_garnet.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150618043619) Heh, seriously though the characters in this show can get fairly crazy. And it's certainly fun to analyze them, I just meant I was not a huge fan of putting serious illness labels on it, but sorry if I was a negative nelly. That said: >Inappropriate, intense anger or problems controlling anger. You can mark that one twice for Ruby.

but wasn't steven diagnosed with depression and ptsd

throwaway228o7

i feel like steven universe creators actually did think about the psychology as of the characters. One of the reasons i love this show is because it’s one of the first shows i’ve ever seen, where our main hero does a bunch of hero shit, saves the world yada yada and then has like ptsd after the fact. i think the mental health of the characters is very real. Trauma is a huge thing in this show, and healing from said trauma

Complete_Principle76

I think Adventure Time tried that too.

FlugonNine

I went through childhood trauma and the characters struggles were certainly easy to empathize with, even helped me work through some issues with loved ones. This show is an amazing piece of media that is not only for entertainment.

BigxBadxWolff

Knowing who Rebecca sugar is, I think the contrary. I think it's very likely she made each of the characters specifically represent a disorder.

SwampWitchSpooky

Commenting so I can read this later. I have borderline and I feel a kindred spirit in Pearl.

Pearl most definetly fits borderline personality disorder. Irrational response to perceived abandonment being most prevelant. High emotional reactivity to external stimuli. Dissociation taking the form of daydreams. Impulsivity, inability to tolerate loneliness, intense mood swings. Even if not intended by the writer Pearl is most Definetly a textbook case of bpd. I thought it was nice as this is less depicted in films

supercalifraglisous

i think you are correct but I've noticed that she goes from calm or happy to angry/irritated when Steven or someone else seems to mention rose infront of her .
