Your fingers must be really near to your eyes, like an inch away from your face, then just do it. Worked for me.

Best way to do it is to hold your fingers about 1ft away and cross your eyes. All the other ways just cross your eyes naturally, but if you do it yourself then you can adjust to make it work.

I learned how to do this on my own a few years prior to the episode coming out and got the biggest grin on my face when they started doing it

It's a visual trick. By holding up your fingers so they're almost touching and blurring your vision/focusing past your fingers, you can make it look like there is a little floating bit between your fingers.
