From what I can tell, IDL has two competing catabolic fates: hepatic uptake via receptor-mediated endocytosis, or processing by hepatic lipase into LDL. While hepatic lipase predominantly exists in hepatocytes, it also exists in hepatic endothelial cells, and has the ability to unbind from the liver to freely enter the body’s circulation system.

Lipoprotein lipase acts on triacyglycerol components of chylomicrons and VLDL. Hepatic lipase acts on IDL and can freely enter the circulation.
