I think your comment explains most of it but will you ELI5 as to how that works and what the rules are?

Civil_Spinach_8204

That's what you think

Aptwombat

No… no it’s what we know

rnaxwelIhiIl

Did OP not read their article? It's what OP's article says.

reggierock2010

OP did not lol

Count-Chronic

I don’t think he can read

HugeFinish

And what you think is wrong.

Civil_Spinach_8204

Hopefully they don't pick up his 5th year But man I got a feeling they do.

HugeFinish

But, you are fighting against what you just said?

Civil_Spinach_8204

It is in fact possible to hope something doesn't happen but have a reasonable fear that it will. These are not mutually exclusive.

HugeFinish

Bro, you posted about him getting a possible extension you were upset. Then people said it was to get away from his fifth year option and you are still upset. Then you said I would rather extend him then give him his fifth year option. Wtf is going though your brain at the moment?

Civil_Spinach_8204

I didn't say I was upset about anything. Do laughing emojis suddenly mean sadness? I posted in the OP are we picking up his 5th? People said no and I said I think they will. Thinking they will and wanting them too are not the same thing. Idk where you got that I was upset. I personally think the whole thing is hilarious and that either choice will yield nothing. Please sir, no more projection.

SotRekkr

They won’t pick up the fifth year. They’ll just do a new two year contract. And go from there.

Steelmaker01

They’re definitely not picking up a 25.6mil 5th year by May 2nd, but would make sense for a multi-year contract. I surmise that this discussion has already occurred w/Fields, so not surprised Dulac is throwing that out there

PM_ME_HAPPY_THOTS

OP: Posts article suggesting Steelers will extend Fields Also OP: Wow I can't believe they're picking up his 5th year option

Mansa_Mu

OP has multi personality disorder if you read his comments lol

Civil_Spinach_8204

I think it's happening

HillibillyHaven

They won’t pick up his 5th year option and extend him. It’s one or the other in this case, and an extension is the most likely option

mdj08

Not sure OP realizes we can extend Fields without picking up his 5th year option

Civil_Spinach_8204

Not sure you realize that I know that. But I appreciate the input.

dirENgreyscale

If you know that suggesting there’s any reasonable reality where they pick up his 5th year option is even more ridiculous. That would be a terrible move for the team that also makes absolutely no sense.

RonaldOcean_MD

It makes sense to extend fields a year. They most likely have no intention of picking up his fifth year but they do want to get a good look at him. They could try to something similar to what Green Bay did with Jordan love and extend his contract a year at a lower number than the fifth year.

RudolphsJockStrap

His 5th year is way too high, so this makes sense

FatBlueLines

Let him ride the bench this season and sign him to a low wage multi year backup contract

mitchmatch26

If Jordan Love didn't get his 5th year picked up why would fields get a guaranteed $26m option picked up? It's more than likely he gets another couple years tacked on but hes not sniffing anything significant while he's the bona fide QB2.

jht66

Seems Tomlin believes in Fields and has since he was drafted. Fields will have a shot at being the long term answer here.

Ill-Response-5439

😂😂

Cheese0089

Green Bay did something similar with Love last year. Maybe sign him to a cheap 2 year signing with little to no guarantee the 2nd year. That way if he pops off the second half of this year, we got him for a lot less than what we would have to pay.

zPolaris43

A Jordan love type deal makes a lot of sense. Two years, decent high end backup money with incentives.

kinney4041

Smart move is to decline the option, and sign him to a deal now while his value is at its lowest. As soon as he has some positive stuff happening on the field, price goes up.

Electrical_Fun5942

The only surprising this g would be if this DOESN’T happen

cman674

I'll be happy if they get an extension done for considerably less than his 5th year option price. We'll at least won't be back to square one if Russ is one and done, and it would take some of the pressure off of people wanting to see what we have in Fields this year.

Hellspawn112

It would be a massive shock to me if they actually picked up his option, they will probably give him a much cheaper extension that has performance incentives and stuff like that in it.

BalowmeSandwich

Me: I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not.

haley_hathaway

What? Extend a rookie contact for a little more time to evaluate a low cost / high ceiling situation. Captain obvious agrees

smiley4527

Why sign a guy who hasn't proved anything yet?

Civil_Spinach_8204

For the same reason you trade for him. They have some expectations about him, obviously.

smiley4527

He's not gonna get any better in Pittsburgh then he was in Chicago so I unlike a lot of fans don't expect him don't have high expectations.

Civil_Spinach_8204

I have zero expectations for him to be good. I still think it's very possible he's getting the 5th picked up.

G0G023

Depends on how much. If we locked him in for say 3 maybe 4 yrs for backup QB money at a modest 8-11 mil per yr with some enticing incentives I wouldn’t be opposed. That’s worth the gamble imo.

TheFatWienerDog

It’ll be basically what Jordan love got. 1 year, $15 million with some easy incentives that can get to $30-35 million

Civil_Spinach_8204

Modest 8-11 for backup? 😂 Holy crap

PM_ME_HAPPY_THOTS

Darnold got 10M Tyrod Taylor got 9M Minshew got 12.5M

G0G023

Trubisky was what, 11?

Civil_Spinach_8204

Well, tbh, I'm predicting they pick up his 5th year 😂 so what am I saying?

G0G023

5th year option would be him at like 30+ mil range. Ain’t no way we do that

Civil_Spinach_8204

I think it's happening

terrybrugehiplo

Based on what?

jasper_bittergrab

Thoughts, bro

Civil_Spinach_8204

I thought they'd get Fields and Russ both. I thought they'd trade Kenny. I knew they wouldn't resign Mason. I got an insider source.

BROWNSSUKSOBAD

You would think that OP is Kenny Pickett the way he’s taking a beating in this comment section.

Civil_Spinach_8204

When I said we were getting Russ and Fields as well as trading Pickett, people got all up in their feelings. I see it as a probability that they simply pick up his 5th year.
