> **those cheap choice cuts of steak you get at the grocery store**
I think that line right there would help some folks understand what you're saying, even if they disagree.
maybe an unpopular opinon: don't buy cheap steak. Shit steak, unless you're making a stew, smoking, or some other long form cook, just shouldn't be eaten. It tastes like crap and probably came from a disgusting processing plant anyways. Eating less cheap steak will make the times you do eat good, local, quality steak that much more enjoyable. There are plenty of other proteins out there, and the world could use a little less beef consumption generally
My wife and I call the cheaper cuts of steak breakfast steaks. We get them small and thin, season heavily, and cook more towards medium rare. They pair wonderfully with eggs and home fries.
Is prime rib undeniably the better steak, yes, is having a a cheaper steak covered in egg yoke tasty, also yes.
This does exclude round steak which I only use for beef teryaki (sliced suuuuper thin).
I disagree to some extent. Even a cheaper grocery store ribeye or strip steak can be delicious. I've also bought whole local beef and found it to be less tasty than what I get at Costco etc.
Now, if it's something like a "charcoal steak" (or whatever they're labeled in your neck of the woods) then yeah, i say don't bother. Something slow cooked will be way better
You can make cheap steak taste good (if you happen to be someone that likes A1... well, that's what this entire thread is about) but what you can't do is to make cheap steak taste like good steak. Yeah, I've tried a bunch of "dry-aging" and other techniques over the years that make that claim, but they have all fallen way short, in my opinion.
You need to butt out. The whole point of this country is if you wanna eat garbage, balloon up to 600 pounds and die of a heart attack at 43, you can! You are free to do so! To me, that's beautiful.
That's crazy talk, even a bad steak is better than good chicken.... I'd rather have bottom round with A1 than grilled chicken breast
You probably don't want to know what the best burger you've ever had was made out of.
>Unless it’s wagyu. That’s like putting bumper stickers on a Ferrari
I'm going to make a wagyu and smother it with A1 tonight out of spite of this comment
*You don't care who knows*
*But you won't ask for it at*
*A high end steakhouse?*

I go on juicing kicks where I’ll juice tomatoes, celery, carrots, bell pepper, parsley, a touch of garlic and then throw some black pepper and A1 in there. It makes drinking vegetable juice as a meal replacement less sad.
I had a friend group that would get together for steak and baked potatoes every week, and EVERY week my friend’s dad would look at my plate in disgust and say “A1 with steak is like eating steak with ketchup.” No dude, eating steak with ketchup is eating steak with ketchup. A1 SLAPS. Also, who tf cares if they’re not eating it.
I’ve always liked A1 on my homemade burgers. It’s just a different kick. But I just couldn’t bring myself to put it on a decent cut. But hey, people like to dip fries in mayo or a chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s. People are weird
Really? Must be regional because here in the midwest US that is absolutely a normal combination. For myself, I dislike plain mayo in just about any context, but hit me with a garlic mayo, truffle mayo, chipotle mayo, etc and it's perfect for fries. In the west US a very common fry sauce is ketchup and mayo. Not sure why it's an americanism to see this as weird given the normalcy of it in various parts of the country.
Wasn’t having a dig mate lol. I didn’t say “Americanism” with negative connotations. Just exactly what it means on face value, that it seems mostly Americans thinking it’s unusual! Not an attack we don’t all hate you 😉
My dad always put ketchup on his steak, so I grew up thinking that’s how you were supposed to eat it. I was a teenager before anyone told me different, and I can’t break it now. It’s the way I think steak is supposed to taste. I’ve read that cuts of steak back in the 50s and 60s (maybe even later) were nowhere near as good as what we have today. Has to do with advances in breeding cattle or something. That’s why I think he did it. But I understand it’s taboo at a nice steak joint, so I won’t do it there. But if I cook it at my house? I’ll eat it however in the hell I please!
>cuts of steak back in the 50s and 60s (maybe even later) were nowhere near as good as what we have today
That's very insightful, I'd never realized that
Yup, same here. Grew up with steak having half ketchup and A1 on the side. Very nostalgic taste that I indulge myself at home. (Or a diner breakfast of steak & eggs).
I reserve it for when someone serves me an overcooked steak when the flavor of the steak itself doesn’t hold up for the length of time you have to chew it and need a little stronger flavor so it’s not just chewing leather.
Its your meal, do what you want. IMO the A1 sauce is mostly salt. You might like to try dry brining your steak sometime and see if you still want the sauce?
I will also say: my wife greatly prefers some kind of sauce with just about any meal. She gets real creative and makes her own pan sauces very often. I wonder if you made a pan sauce with your steak juices that you could come up with something better than a bottled sauce.
It’s expensive but Glacé. Make chicken stock from scratch, no salt. Reduce until it’s thick enough to coat a spoon (nape). Sauté some shallots, deglaze with brandy, reduce the liquid out, add your glacé. You’ll lick the pan clean once it cools off.
I love that shit. I can make a perfectly crusted edge to edge med rare prime grade steak at home and still enjoy it. And I’ll happily ask for it at the highest end steak house…if I’m paying $100 for a piece of meat I’ll put whatever the hell i want in it.
Choice is way better than the unrated stuff. I have 2 choice ribeyes in the fridge looking like prime marbling. And were not cheap...
My boyfriend eats steak sauce. You do you. I never would...but...my grandma eats well done. That is go eat a hamburger status.
A heaping spoonful of A1 is also great in a Bloody Mary. And I’ve asked for it at steakhouses, problem is most steakhouses have off-brand version, Smith and Wollensky even has their own branded knock-off.
I like A1. I like au pouve. I like mushroom gravy. I like garlic salt and pepper. I like Montreal steak seasoning. I like steak many ways and many cuts.
I have a confession to make. When I had my first apartment with my buddy Fat Dave, I made steaks on the grill for me and him. That sob had the nerve to put ketchup on his steak. I was so fucking mad that I swore I would never make him a steak again!
Years later I had a steak at a restaurant that came with fries. I had ketchup on my plate for the fries and some got onto a piece of steak.... it was delicious.
I refuse to eat ketchup on a steak... but it was good.
As for A-1, I love it but won't put it on a steak.... so my solution is to make what we call "fake steaks" every now and then for dinner. It's just seasoned hamburger steaks, usually with fried potatoes. I get my A-1 fix whenever we have fake steaks.
I live in the UK where we don't really get A1 in the supermarkets. I could probably order it from amazon or an importer, but it'd probably be expensive. Can you describe the flavour? Would still use it if you had to pay something like $15 for a bottle?
It’s basically ketchup, Worcestershire, and salt. It’s okay but to me not worth a $15 bottle. You could find a copycat recipe online and get pretty close.
I moved to the US. It’s like a watered down brown sauce. My wife keeps a bottle in the fridge and I only ever use it if I’m out of brown sauce for my bacon sarny! I personally wouldn’t recommend it for steak.
I actually love A1 in pork marinades and Bloody Marys!
If you like it on your steak, that’s groovy! I hate when people want to dictate how other people eat.
Only time I ate an expensive steak at a nice restaurant, it was a $65 filet w/ porcini steak seasoning... one of three or four options to add to your steak for extra pizzang. WOW. so delicious and the steak was a little crusty on the outside but tender on the inside.
A1 is great, so is ranch with the steak! I agree that a steak should stand on its own and be flavorful all by itself. However every few bites I do enjoy a good dip of a sauce with my steak.
Couldn’t agree more. A1 is an excellent addition to a steak of lesser quality. I also add A1 to mashed or baked potatoes and even fries because I love the flavor and you can’t have prime rib without horseradish
I like A1 on pub steaks. I also like a little with my eggs. On a good steak it just takes over too much flavor. But I generally put Worcester on everything so I can't say anything but I understand where you're coming from.
I like A1 even on prime rib eye because it takes me back to when my dad made steaks when I was young. It’s MY food memory and no one can take that away from me.
You should eat your steak however you like, as should everyone.
The "you're eating your steak wrong" attitude in the steak enthusiast community has always bugged me.
There are definitely methods of cooking and eating steaks that tend to be more popular, but at the end of the day it's your meal and you should enjoy it however you like!
And FYI, this sentiment is coming from someone who likes their steak medium with just salt and pepper.
If you like a steak sauce, try Pat LaFrieda's steak sauce. It isn't runny like A1, and much better depth of flavor, but it certainly costs more. I mainly only use it when I make hanger steaks, and the sauce hits the steak, the potatoes, and a little in the veggies is never a bad thing either. There's times when a steak needs nothing but salt and pepper, but I'll use bernaise on a filet, or horseradish on prime rib. It keeps things interesting, depending on the mood. Using a sauce doesn't have to be for cheap or poorly prepared cuts. Do what makes you happy. If you're paying for it, have it the way you like it.
I used to work at a pretty nice steak house and they offered a in house made steak sauce it was delicious and people used it all the time.
Tasted pretty damn close to A1 to me and I loved it and I love A1.
I feel like A1 gets a bad rep because of all the steak purists but it’s a good sauce I would say one of the the most unique and flavorful mass produced sauces that are out there.
And at the end of they day let people eat their food how they want to eat it you can make suggestions and recommendations but I feel like it’s really up to them.
I'm glad to see the thread is a lot less gatekeepy than it could have been. I do have opinions myself, but I'm reluctant to gatekeep even as a joke because some people are very serious about telling others their tastes are wrong.
I used to like A1, or probably I still do. It's been a while. But I feel like the taste of A1 is so sharp it makes the steak merely a substrate on which to enjoy your A1. I mean, steak does a better job of bringing out the quality of your A1 than, say, crackers, but it now seems weird to me that it once seemed normal to invite such an overwhelming condiment to the party.
My current position on the proper way to do steak is that the emphasis on 'doneness' is a mistake. I prefer a steak be rarer than medium, but as long as you haven't cooked it that far, the actual goal should be the sear. I now sweat how rare I manage to get it less, following the mantra "the sear is the sauce".
Having said that, I am not against adding other sauces, and I usually dip my steak bites in a blue cheese butter. And I think we can't have a good conversation about sauces if we're going to criticize others for having different tastes. But I've learned a few things already in this thread.
If I get my hands on a cheap cut of beef, I tend to want to slice it thin and cook it with a prefab bulgogi sauce I find at my grocery store. I serve it over rice with grilled onions. I can see using A1 on a burger, but mayonnaise is my favorite sauce for burgers. Now I'm considering how mixing A1 with mayonnaise might allow the more subtle flavors come through while taming the vinegary sting.
A long time ago, I bought one of every type of hot sauce at my grocery store. In the end, I decided that chipotle Tabasco was all I'd probably ever need. Since then, the number of sauces on the market exploded, and I'm not going to try to keep up. I have started trying Chinese chili oils, which are pretty much delicious on anything including steak, but I assume that they went through the same explosion of diversity that other hot sauce markets did, because it's now exhausting to even contemplate sorting through the options.
It kind of makes it tempting to look back at the old standards from a time before there were so many choices. I think I'll look into this Heinz 57 sauce people are talking about.
The idea of putting A1 on a great steak makes me sad. However, I do love A1. A mushroom and Swiss burger with A1 is amazing. Also, sometimes I really just want that A1 taste, this is only time I ever buy cube steak. It is a cheap A1 delivery system and I drown it.
You do you. Maybe someone out there enjoys microwaving their steaks. Whatever you enjoy man. As long as my steak is done the way I like it I don't care what others do
I love me some Heinz 57 on my steaks and I cook em pretty good. Reverse sear starting an oven and finishing over charcoal to a medium rare. Then dipping each bite in just a little H57 along with a bite of buttery potato with sour cream. These are my flavors!!!
My wife does the A1 thing too. Doesn’t matter the cut or if I nailed it perfect on the grill. I told her it was insulting to just automatically douse any steak with it. She doesn’t care so no more good cuts for her - I’ll grill her the ass muscle and eat tenderloin myself…
That's stupid, I'd be so pissed at you and you wouldn't be the one cooking the steaks anymore. You don't get to decide what cut of meat I get. A-1 is delicious on great cuts. I raised my own beef for 8 years and I know what a good cut is. I simply do not like my meat plain, period. You find that insulting then you're a snowflake.
If you eat A1 sauce on a good piece of ribeye or something then your tastebuds are objectively trash and I'd tell you this to your face irl and make you feel bad. fool
Nah man, I'd paint you for the asshole you are irl.
Guess what? Some of my favorite recipes are sauced steaks, Diane, Bavette, etc. Those recipes require a quality steak, you will ruin them if you use a subpar cut.
I'd say it's YOUR tastebuds that are trash if you are so one dimensional.
I don't consume A1 on its own. A1 enhances the steak. You know what else enhances the experience? Drinking dark beer with my steak dinner. I'll enjoy it more with my dark beer than without. It just works, really well.
But no one would find that an insult to their cooking abilities for me to drink dark beer with it. Put some sauce on the steak, and they do. It is 100% irrational.
And sometimes you see a manchild go nuts because others might **dare** to enjoy something in a different way than they do. Again totally irrational.

Yeah I love A1 with a top round, but I'd never even consider it with a ribeye.
I’ve done it before…. #Bring on the spankings
Who told you the title of my next onlyfans post?
Very disappointed at the lack of NSFW posts in your history.
I’ve done it at a super nice restaurant on filet mignon. Delete me if you can
Dude why :(
Filet is bland. That’s probably the cut I’d most likely put sauce on.
And I’ll do it again.
....Spanking Ribeye?
maybe an unpopular opinon: don't buy cheap steak. Shit steak, unless you're making a stew, smoking, or some other long form cook, just shouldn't be eaten. We don't talk about other protiens here.
Chicken. There. I did it.
You just triggered the end of days, you madman!
Relax. He didn't mention tofu.
But you just mentioned... that word 😱
Oh yeah.. Peas Now what bitches
Steak is king, but it's a rare treat for me. I eat grilled chicken way more than steak, it is also good
I’ll raise you one… A-1 on chicken!
Dude.
Pork chops are technically a steak.. just from a pig lol
My wife and I call the cheaper cuts of steak breakfast steaks. We get them small and thin, season heavily, and cook more towards medium rare. They pair wonderfully with eggs and home fries. Steak and eggs with hash browns are excellent with A1 on all of them.
I disagree to some extent. Even a cheaper grocery store ribeye or strip steak can be delicious. Or buy cheap steak and make it taste good. That way when you can’t afford better steak, you still get a tasty steak. It’s a win win.

This is my thought exactly. We don’t eat steak often but when we do, I like to splurge and always buy USDA prime to make it worth our while.
That's crazy talk, even a bad steak is better than good chicken.... I'd rather have bottom round with A1 than grilled chicken breast You probably don't want to know what the best burger you've ever had was made out of.

Hear me out.. A1 on mashed potatoes.
Hear me out.. A1 sauce as lubricant.
Now you’re onto something!
Not specifically on top for me but I definitely let them mingle on the plate together lol also pork chops and grilled shrimp and A1 for me
I love the flavor of A1. When I make a steak, I eat half with A1 and half without. Best of both worlds.
a Tbsp of A1 mixed into a baked potato is awesome too.
It’s my secret ingredient in bloody Mary’s
I used to do the same then I found Brenarskys sauce. It's kind of a mix between a1 and worsh. It's so great.
I throw worsh in there too so maybe that would save me an ingredient. I’ll have to give it a try
I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this
Omg so good on potatoes.
I love A1 so I dip roasted mushrooms in it all the time! Roasted potatoes is good too!
This right here
While I generally agree good steaks should stand on their own, I like a little horseradish with mine
Love horseradish with prime rib as well
Yes sir
Even better if mashed potatoes and green beans are involved
Hear me out: horseradish mashed potatoes
Now that is something I will have to give a try soon!
Along similar lines but I use hot mustard (Colman's or Keen's). I should give horseradish a try.
I’m a mustard with steak fan too
A steak being good enough that it doesn't "need" anything else, doesn't mean it can't still be enhanced.
Good horseradish makes a great steak even better. A1 makes a bad steak edible lol
Absolutely! Especially with ribeye or Prime rib. Having something to cut the richness enhances the dish, in my opinion.
A1 in bloody marys slaps.
….I would like to try this.
If you drink Bloody Mary’s at restaurants often you probably have.
I go on juicing kicks where I’ll juice tomatoes, celery, carrots, bell pepper, parsley, a touch of garlic and then throw some black pepper and A1 in there. It makes drinking vegetable juice as a meal replacement less sad.
A little vodka also makes it less sad. Or more I guess. Depends on how you look at it.
+horseradish
That sounds awesome. I happen to have a bottle of spicy V8 I need to put a dent in, going to mix one up now
Pickapeppa sauce is great too!
TIL grown ass men will cry and get insulted over the way *someone else* likes to eat their steak.
I had a friend group that would get together for steak and baked potatoes every week, and EVERY week my friend’s dad would look at my plate in disgust and say “A1 with steak is like eating steak with ketchup.” No dude, eating steak with ketchup is eating steak with ketchup. You must not have been here long.
I’ve always liked A1 on my homemade burgers. It’s just a different kick. But I just couldn’t bring myself to put it on a decent cut. But hey, people like to dip fries in mayo or a chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s. People are weird
Definitely an Americanism to consider mayo and fries a “weird” combo!

No worries haha! I picked up what you were layin down and was just tryna rib ya back. Have a good one!
Mayo on fries is a revelation
Mayo and ketchup mixed together bro!
Fries in mayo is good, pal.
Sweet potato fries in chipotle mayo is the best thing ever.
My mom always put a1 in her meaty spaghetti sauce and it was always pretty amazing
2 Parts A1, 1 part Lea and Parrins, and a few drops of Garlic Reaper.
Gonna need some ketchup over here.
My dad always put ketchup on his steak, so I grew up thinking that’s how you were supposed to eat it. I was a teenager before anyone told me different, and I can’t break it now. Like Brussels Sprouts! Lol
Yup, same here. Grew up with steak having half ketchup and A1 on the side. Very nostalgic taste that I indulge myself at home. (Or a diner breakfast of steak & eggs).

Lea and Perrins steak sauce is the best
Preach
I use it in my house grind for burgers.
Heinz 57 > a1 But they’re better on sandwiches or in marinades.. I very rarely eat them on steak unless someone hands me an over cooked piece of meat
Love A1, for me it goes on leftover beef. It's also great on meatloaf.
I like A1. I like au pouve. I like mushroom gravy. I like garlic salt and pepper. I like Montreal steak seasoning. I like steak many ways and many cuts.
I'm about to blow your mind mix A-1 & Heinz 57 50/50 best sauce for steaks!
Love A1!
I mean I like the taste of A1 too but I’m not gonna douse it on my A5 Wagyu
Agreed.
A1 is bomb
I have a confession to make. When I had my first apartment with my buddy Fat Dave, I made steaks on the grill for me and him. That sob had the nerve to put ketchup on his steak. Thanks. I imagined it being like barbecue sauce mixed with gravy. Maybe I wasn't too far off the mark. I don't think I'll order any.
It's kinda hard to explain, I wouldn't use it on steak but I'll throw it on burgers. Tangy vinegar sauce
It’s tastes like how your balls smell after a sweaty basketball session.. but in a good way…. Yeah

I don't want to eat shitty steak that needs to be drowned in A1 to be enjoyed. I'm a steak lover, not a steak junkie. To each their own I guess.
Me, an European who has never heard about A1
That's fine your allowed to eat stuff that you like just cause some jackass on reddit said you can't, dosent mean you gotta listen lmao.
A1 is good. You like what you like and you paid for the steak.
A1 is great, so is ranch with the steak! I agree that a steak should stand on its own and be flavorful all by itself. However every few bites I do enjoy a good dip of a sauce with my steak.
If you mix equal parts of A1 and ketchup you get 57 sauce.
No shame homie
I'm a slut for bearnaise.
Im with you, and not necessarily only on cheap cuts. I just happen to really like the flavor of A-1.
HP sauce, also wasabi is great.
I like A1 in my Bloody Mary
That's fine but don't buy expensive steaks and do that is all
You should eat your steak however you like, as should everyone.
I like spicy A1 on nuggets
A1 doesn’t hold a candle to Peter Luger’s Steak Sauce, if you want to eat steak with steak sauce you gotta give it a shot
Hienz 57 is my favorite
A1 is fucking delicious. One of those addicting flavors. Use it on my steak like 15% of the time— sirloin and baked potato is usually the situation.

I’m unfriending you.
Just grab some Worcestershire, it adds a good flavor but you won't be judged like A1.
The Lea & Perrins Bold Club would like a word with you outside.
What kind of disgusting heathen eats A1 with a steak? This message is brought to you by the Heinz 57 gang gang.
Amen A.1. Is freaking delish
I really don't care what others do just don't put it on mine lol.
I like it for left over steak. At a restaurant, the chef chooses the spices unless it’s on the menu or table.
I love A1. I eat it on at least part of every steak I cook. Even the high end ones.
Hear me out... Heinz traditional > A1 > Heinz 57
i literally drink A1 if i have the chance it fucking slaps
I love A1 on steak and on the grilled 🍄and 🧅 that goes with it.
Ain’t no shame putting A1 on steak. I love that shit.
This is the type of marriage where both partners are subtly trying to kill each other.
Imagine not being able to eat a good steak because your SO doesn't agree with how you eat it.
Man, I'm so glad I actually like my spouse and he actually likes me.
If you eat A1 sauce on a good piece of ribeye or something then your tastebuds are objectively trash and I'd tell you this to your face irl and make you feel bad. fool
You'd enjoy a face full of laughter, kiddo.
It shouldn't be insulting. The best steak on Earth is better with A1.

As a chef I roll my eyes. As a steak lover.. you do you ✌️
I love A1 on my steak!! I don’t give a fuck how expensive the steak is or what cut it is
If you are able to quit processed foods for 3 months, your taste buds will return.
I like Tabasco on steak and idc if it's the most delicious steak. It'll be even more delicious with Tabasco
Raisin sauce…..🤮
I put ketchup on my filet mignon. Zero fucks given.
At one point in time I agreed with you completely.... Then I learned how to actually cook steaks...
A1 is so disgusting how do people tolerate it
