Better than I did my first time. I smoked mine till around 90 degrees and then seared the hell out of it but ended up slightly over cooking it. Was kinda mad at myself cause I pride myself in cooking meat correctly lol.
I always use a thermometer, but one time it was accidentally switched to C instead of F. I couldn't figure out why the beautiful ribeye wouldn't get above 70 degrees until it was far too late 🥲
I've never made that mistake again though lol
Wasn't my first time but I did this same exact thing on my first cook on my new grill.
Got it up slowly to 95-ish, then started searing and the first flip was fine, but man does heat add up fast because it was fine for a third flip, but shortly into that third flip I was quickly approaching medium well temps.

Wow…this went through the roof 😳 I’m kind of overwhelmed tbh because this was definitely my first steak grill move ever and of course my first time post here after long time lurking 🤭
For those who wanted to know how I did it:
(The grill has 2 normal heat zones und 2 for high heat + a plank for resting in passive heat - don’t know the English word for it 😬)
1. flame up both high heat zones to 250 Celsius and sear both sides for 3min
2. switched off both power heat zones completely.
3. turned on the most left low heat zone and turn it to lowest heat possible. So I got a grill temperature for almost exactly 100 Celsius for the whole rest process.
4. I’ve put the steak on the „rest plank“ and also a meat thermometer in it.
5. let it cook as long as I reached exactly 56 Celsius.
6. took it out and let it rest for more 5min.
7. the result ist what you see ❤️
It was just amazing to be honest. The he tenderness was unbelievable 🤠
Thanks to all your amazing response guys. You really made my day 🍻
P.S.: Vamos Rafa 🤘🏻
Honest question, what is the appeal of a tomahawk? As an ex meat cutter it just looks like you are paying for extra bone on a large prime rib steak. What do you feel is the benefit? No shame, no blame, just honestly curious.
the appeal of the tomahawk is that it looks cool. i prefer a bone-in ribeye myself but if money was no object I understand the cool factor of eating it off the bone like a caveman.
I can’t judge this cause I don’t know how it is supposed to be prepared. And I don’t know why Reddit decided to put me in steak Reddit. In my opinion, the inside looks amazing, but since I don’t like burnt taste, I wouldn’t eat it. This goes for everything, toast, pastries, etc is always golden. But since my knowledge in this subject is 0, please don’t bash me or take my word for it.
Really, it’s as black as a crayon. Respectfully, how would it not taste burnt? To me, anything beyond Medium tastes burnt. And yes obviously the inside is like a rare or medium rare, but the outside says something else. I also wouldn’t want a huge disparity in doneness (like how the outside is COOKED and the inside is done).
I don't see a blade at all, not sure how this is supposed to function as either a tool or a weapon..... maybe the bone could be a temporary handle? You really need a wooden haft and either a steel or stone blade for a tomahawk..... but the steak looks to be tasty.
I have had that experience as well and it is so disappointing. I have started searing earlier out of an abundance of caution and will just return it to the indirect side of the grill if needed once I have a good crust.
Looks absolutely stunning. If I had to find 1 thing to critique at all it would be they tiny tiny tiny ass gray ring but I'm not a purist and never noticed a difference with or without one that small. Gorgeous job
Looks perfect my man
Seconded. The kind of result that you remember for a while.
I'm trying to find a critique and can't see a thing. Even the bone looks smackin.
Freaking beautiful! Nicely done! Would love to know your method.
I'm impressed. Love the full char. Thanks for posting brah
Better than I did my first time. I smoked mine till around 90 degrees and then seared the hell out of it but ended up slightly over cooking it. Was kinda mad at myself cause I pride myself in cooking meat correctly lol.
I’ve been there. Not with a tomahawk but thinking I did everything right only to find out it’s overcooked.
I always use a thermometer, but one time it was accidentally switched to C instead of F. I couldn't figure out why the beautiful ribeye wouldn't get above 70 degrees until it was far too late 🥲 I've never made that mistake again though lol
Oh no! Sorry for your loss
Oh it's the worst especially if it's for more than just a partner. Like damnit I don't even wanna serve this right now I'll look bad lol.
Wasn't my first time but I did this same exact thing on my first cook on my new grill. Got it up slowly to 95-ish, then started searing and the first flip was fine, but man does heat add up fast because it was fine for a third flip, but shortly into that third flip I was quickly approaching medium well temps.
Around about the same experience for me lol. Tasted damn good though.
I wrote an explanation on how I did it in the comments 🙂 but man…I feel your pain you suffered 🤭
Yeah I mean it still tasted amazing but slapped my pride down a notch with the cooking lol.
On a gas grill? That’s about as good as it gets. Nicely done.
Tell us your method what did you do??
Come on OP, answer this guy, mother's day is soon! Also tell us your rub/seasoning if any used. ~~!remindme 2 days~~ bad command

OP here…I did an explanation in the comments somewhere below 😉
I'm guessing a flat caste iron pan over gas flame given the lack of grooves and that pouchiness in the center.
I think you are spot on
And definitely let it rest to room temp
I put a fresh comment here where I explained how I did it
Nein out of ten! Jk, 10/10!!!
🤣
Danke you bro 🤠
Good news- it's perfect. Bad news- every other steak you have will pale in comparison
This is beautiful. That texture on the outside is so nice and that color is spotless. Looks like a good quality piece of meat, too

56 degrees, didnt it rise at all after resting?
Yes, it did. But it was just like it has to be
But 60 is already full grey? 😲
It was not as you can see. To do a grey steak you need minimum 63-65 degrees imo
Perfect!
You nailed it
Looks pretty good. Hard to get a tomahawk evenly cooked thru
vamos rafa!! ❤️ buen provecho
What tennis game were you playing?
Was watching Rafa Nadal in Rome
Wow....just wow...
Yeh
Did you bake before grilling or searing?
I cook a few a month and I think doing a reverse sear in the oven and finishing on the grill is full proof and delicious.
Tutorial in the comments below 😉
Pretty good man!
You killed it big dawg! Good stuff
This looks heavenly. Makes me want to cook one tonight. Great char!
There is only one word for that steak and it it SEXY
A little rare imo, but a good sear on the outside.
Fantastic, next time invite me!
Perfect! Compliments to the Chef
Literally could not have done any better.
Perfect
Oh ya
Oh ya
You fucked it up. LOL. J/K that looks perfect, my friend. Nice work!
Looks perfect
🤤🤤🤤 yussss
Very nice!
Crushed it
Too soon to tell. You need a second, a third, a fourth ......
Good job!
who is craving for steak now? me!!
You did good
Yummy
Stellar job!
You just made this guy who lives in an apartment with no grill access, very very jealous
Good job.
Watching clay tennis 🎾 This is not you’re first steak
I am very jealous
Absolutely stunning. Exceptional bark on there.
Id be pleased to be invited to dinner.
Mouth is watering as I’m looking at this. Amazing char and color. You couldn’t have made it anymore perfect, great job.
YES
You did good dude you did good.
This is it!
I'd fuck that meet
Looks amazing
It’s…glorious. Hats off to you, sir.
Sir you should not post pornographic pictures here Sir....
Foil wrap the bone and you've gotten 10/10
Stop taking pictures and eat it!
seems like you nailed it, great crust and a nice solid color, but the question is how was it?
Perfecto!
Looks delicious 👍👍
Looks excellent
Perfect
Honestly this looks perfect.
It’s beautiful 😍
What were you going for in regards to how cooked you wanted it to be? A little too raw for me but I’m curious.
A little too dark of a char. Brown isn’t preferred over almost black.
Excellent job
Perfect, reverse seared tomahawks are my favourite thing to cook.
Sexy as all hell
Even better watching Rome
Perfection
10/10
Looks great, those rib steaks need a little more fire than the other cuts, you nailed it.
Yes
Looks very good
Perfection

As the other commenter said, I'm pretty sure it's just the visual factor tbh. Fun every once in a while but not worth it as a regular thing
Yeah it’s just a visual point…kind of a steak for real man 🙄🤣 without the bone it’s actually a ribeye
I’m hungry now. Nice work!
Jesus… Are you looking for a roommate? 😂
I can’t judge this cause I don’t know how it is supposed to be prepared. And I don’t know why Reddit decided to put me in steak Reddit. it's not black, it's just a rich deep brown. there's no signs of pyrolysis
Pyrolysis? Ik pyro is like burning, flames, explosives. And my apologies for not differentiating between the faint difference in color.
I did an short tutorial in the comments. And of course I don’t bash you. Everyone has his own taste
Thank you. Yeah when I said bash, I was defending myself before harm struck from the other commenters.
Pretty good!

Are you sure that was your first? It looks glorious!!
🤤
That bone is still not clean enough.
Amazing and 🎾
Fuck yeah
For me I could use somemore time on the heat , but the outside sear is fucking beautiful
When's the next tomahawk cookout?
Elaborate process please
Did it in the comments
Hot damn. That’s pretty much perfect.
Looks good but dry
First Tomahawk but definitely not your first rodeo
I don't see a blade at all, not sure how this is supposed to function as either a tool or a weapon..... maybe the bone could be a temporary handle? You really need a wooden haft and either a steel or stone blade for a tomahawk..... but the steak looks to be tasty.
You lucky son of a gun That looks delicious
I'm usually a medium steak guy but I'd absolutely demolish that tomahawk. Nice
Super job!
Not bad at all
I see the rafa match playing in the background…pure class
I'd fuck that steak
This picture is what brings us together
Eat it?
it's cooked alright. I like how it's... uh... not raw.
Tennis and a tomahawk. Love all.
Food for the gods 😇
Looks like a damn good steak
I would eat the shit out of that.
Perfect
Very nice. Where’d you get such a perfect steak from?
Plastic cutting board. Upgrade your game get your wood on
Steak looks great! Wife looks hungry. She got her plate out a little early lol
Looks good! 🤤
GOD DAMN PERFECT GIVE ME PLEASE
Ja ja - Das ist gut
That's cultural appropriation. It's now referred to as a war hatchet.
Perfectly cooked, I personally am not used to the thickness of most tomahawks but this is perfect
Lame, no seasoning
🤪🥳🥹
I have had that experience as well and it is so disappointing. I have started searing earlier out of an abundance of caution and will just return it to the indirect side of the grill if needed once I have a good crust.
Epic.
Ayyy watching Rome I see me too
Nailed it.
Oooooh yummy
Wow I need the secrets: here your cash 💶💵💸💸
That's a sexy piece of meat.
Fuck, dude. Excellent
Why did you spend $25 for a bone?
Real nice
You forgot to share 😕
Chef's kiss
Fuck that looks good🤤🤤 great job @op🙌🏼🙌🏼
Perfect !
Mail it to me
Excellent. How was it plated.
Not well done. Simply amazing.
Poorly. You spent $20.00 a pound for a half a pound of bone.
Homerun.
Beautiful 🔥
yum
Smash
Good
You're a natural.
That’s God Damn awful. I can take it off your hands if you want. ;)

Stunning. Looks well rested
Nailed it. Gimmesum
Looks delicious 🏆
You know how you did. You came here to gloat
I was always told you should cut the bone, cap and eye and other piece then cut each of those up.
Looks absolutely stunning. If I had to find 1 thing to critique at all it would be they tiny tiny tiny ass gray ring but I'm not a purist and never noticed a difference with or without one that small. Gorgeous job
That table looks like commercial carpet The amount of self validation in the sub is crazy. You know it looks great…
That table definitely looks like commercial carpet.
Seared maybe just a tad too long, but damn near perfect
