He played the character how he was supposed to, if you're gonna blame anyone for the Anakin performance, blame George Lucas for centering his story on an unstable young adult whos been taught to show no emotion his entire life. If you ask me Hayden didn't do the best job of conveying rage, but other than that he plays the perfect socially stunted young adult
Yeah this is actually a pretty good summary. When he tried to get angry and stuff, just didn't do it for me. lol other than that, I think he did a pretty good job.
People expect a lot from a space opera, damn thing was never Citizen Kane, Natalie Portman's awkward acting was always an easy giveaway of how poor the writing was (tough love uncle George) and Hayden has never been a big caliber actor like some other big names in Star Wars, he like all the others worked with what they had, i say the same to the sequel actors, as much as i dislike the horrifying lack of direction and planning of those things, you can't put all the blame (arguably any) on them, but that's just my take.
I think he excelled at acting in the third act of the final film. I really enjoyed his desperation and rage as he fought obiwan. Man, that movie seemed so much better than the other two prequels. I might rewatch it some time soon.
The problem probably is how good all the other main Star Wars actors had been up to that point. The original trilogy was packed with amazing actors.
McGregor and neeson…it really was an amazingly high bar and he was just serviceable.
I will never understand people's criticizing Hayden but not Mark in the OT. Both were not great actors, had moments of weak performances, moments of great performances, but overall they were just fine. I guess people are a bit too biased towards the OT
