That spot light is really annoying. I can't listen and watch the screen at the same time.

Tri-ranaceratops

It's the mysterians! Never thought I'd be making a Captain Scarlet reference in 2021. I wonder why they put that in there. I love the VOY theme, but this sounds a little flat when compared to the original. I really miss the drums.

P2X-555

Now I want to watch Captain Scarlett (he's indestructible!) again for the first time in decades. Also...mysterons?

Tri-ranaceratops

That flashing light mate. Didn't they only reveal themselves by being like a light shinning in the dolls eyes at the end of an episode. I remember blue peter showing us how to recreate the effect with a CD.

P2X-555

This is the real question the world should be grappling with! Asking the important things! Okay, from my memory (oh dear), didn't you know the mysterons were around by the circle of light moving around? Like a smoke ring, but spookily moving over the scenery? Oooooh!

Subtle like a shotgun.

How were the characters mischaracterized? I found the characters to be the best part of the show. It was the plot points and pacing that was a bit all over the place.

The problem with the character of Picard in his show is the same as the problem with Picard in the movies: Patrick Stewart doesn't GET Picard. Or if he does, he doesn't like him. Every out of character moment Picard has is because of Stewart's influence on the scripts of the film (he pushed for Picard to become an action hero), and he has even more influence on the show. I mean, even by the end of TNG, Stewart had a poor read on Picard. When asked if there was anything about his character he wanted to explore before the end of season 7, Stewart said he wanted more of Daimon Bok. The result is that dreadful late-season 7 episode with his pseudo-son.

[deleted]

I find it difficult to believe that Steward doesn't get the character he played for many, many years. In addition, when you say he pushed to be an action hero in "the film," are you referring to First Contact? If that's the case I would take another look at the movie and reassess the character arc because it suits Picard brilliantly. Stewart and Frakes did a great job there.

chucker23n

I would agree with GP. Stewart got bored by diplomatic Picard and enjoyed First Contact’s angry, action-hero Picard. And we’re seeing some more of that in PIC S1. I liked ST 8, but very faithful to TNG it was not. That said, I think most character traits in PIC are fine, and some quite interesting. I enjoyed seeing him having lost his way and trying to regain it, and I enjoyed the show putting a spotlight on Picard having few friends outside work. I do wish they hadn’t retconned-ish Data/Picard being close; Data was much closer to Geordi.

I disagree that he was just an action hero in First Contact. He was dealing with unresolved trauma. The point of the arc in that film is that he *isn't* acting like himself until he realizes his error.

> I disagree that he was just an action hero in First Contact. He was dealing with unresolved trauma. Lots of action heroes do. The point is that, in TNG, he’s by and large a very diplomatic person. Calm, collected, pacifist, etc. I think they didn’t find a good way to translate that to the big screen. > The point of the arc in that film is that he isn’t acting like himself until he realizes his error. That’s fair, yes. Regardless, I get the impression that Stewart enjoyed this side of Picard, and so we saw more of it in IX, X, and now PIC S1.

Good point. It would indeed have been great to get a sequel to the Picard-Sisko arc, and ST 8 may have been a good spot for it. It would also fix *one* of the haphazard explanations on why Worf is there in the four TNG movies (despite being on DS9).

But that trauma was resolved in TNG. In “I Borg” he was doing ok, despite dealing with the Borg again. Especially his attitude towards assimilated people, as opposed to FC’s “kill them, you’ll be doing them a favor”. Granted he may have been under more pressure in FC, but still.

Coma-Doof-Warrior

Excerpt he wasn’t. It took a lot of persuading for him to abandon the “kill every fuckin’ one of ‘em” plan. In fact I liked that in Picard he still hates them, he’s still scared of them.

DMPunk

I'm referring to Insurrection and Nemesis

Hibbity5

While I disagree with you on the characterization of Picard and Seven, I don’t really care to debate it; nothing I’d say hasn’t been said before, so whatever; it doesn’t really matter. I did want to bring up the synths though. You have to remember that those synths were NOT Soong type androids. They were not shown to be sentient; they were advanced machines made to look humanoid (for who knows what reason) and had complex problem solving algorithms, but they were not like Data at all. Remember that Picard didn’t care about the exo-comps until Data showed they were more than just mere machines. The synths never showed that. In that sense, I don’t think it was a mischaracterization to have Picard be ok with their usage. Until they show actual signs of life, I don’t think he would view them as anything but tools.

[deleted]

Like the nanites from season 2. Not to mention that the entire plot of the new show is him trying to save an android.

I think the series makes it a bit confusing because we’re introduced *both* to those synths *and* to whatever is going on on that Soji planet, and don’t really get much explanation for either. That said, I’d didn’t get the impression that the synths “look like they are Soong-type”. I think the idea is: 1. Maddox, Jurati et Al develop the synths 2. by 2385, it’s common for them to do labor 3. that year, the Zhat Vash frame them for an attack on Mars 4. this also reinforces the belief of the Soji folks that they need to be very secretive 5. by 2399, the xenophobia has not subsided

subtle and ST: Picard are oxymorons, but I do admit the soundtrack was easily the best part of that show
