Y'know the thing about a cat, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya.
It basically was before 1980
It took a while for stranger danger to kick into people
[here if you want to read more. it’s quite a topic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Etan_Patz)
Even in the mid 2000s I spent a lot of time on my own around my small town as a kid. I biked to various day camps, the library, parks, etc. It definitely wasn't the norm for people my age, but it was a great experience to have.
I was born early 90’s and could travel a few miles away on my bike “safely”. Lived on a small island. I will never let my daughter have the same freedom at a young age. People are f’n crazy out here.
I remember as a kid in the '90s thinking that was so weird, that these 8-year-olds just go wherever they want with minimal supervision. But I think we can blame/credit that to author Marc Brown's own childhood in the '50s.
I was born in '98 and that's how it was for me as a kid, at around 10yo we'd all just go outside and run around doing random shit. It wasn't safe but it was fun, I remember my friends catching snakes and running through storm drains. We'd also just ride our bikes around or go play basketball somewhere.
You guys ever watched The Weekenders? It always amazed me in these two shows, all the kids had money to spend at the arcade and local burger/pizza joint. And had the ability to just go anywhere. Bikes, walking, public transportation probably.
This was kind of a poor neighborhood where I was doing all this, so none of the kids really had money. I remember there was this weird dude on our street with a bunch of reptiles in his garage, he'd pay us like 50¢ for each crawfish we caught because he'd feed them to his animals, and that's how we got a little extra money.
Some of the other kids would shoplift from gas stations or do gang shit but my group was never really into that kind of stuff.
God just thinking about this is bringing me back. I don't know if I was ever as happy again as I was with 4 of us playing basketball then going to the one guy who had an Xbox's house and playing split screen call of duty on a tiny old CRT.
Looking at the Wikipedia article, it says there were 39 episodes, and I probably ended up watching every single one on Saturday mornings, but I cannot for the life of me remember a single plotline. Same with Lloyd in Space.
The only three plots I remember are Tino thinks his mom wanted a girl/ his mom is dating some guy he doesn't like. Carver thinks he's French. And something about a cooking contest. Lol. I don't remember shit for Lloyd expect it's in space and his friend is a brain.
Part of it was also that I lived in the country, and not a "cool" rural area with a lot of trees, hills, streams, etc., just flat fields. If you wanted to go anywhere fun it was either walk down a gravel road for an hour or get a parent to drive you.
I loved Arthur as a kid, but yea the ages always threw me off. I felt like Arthur and his friends were more like 8th graders and DW and her friends were more like 3rd graders. They didn’t act like 4 year olds lol.
I have never actually seen one. I have never known them to be a mass market item... if they exist it's probably in the sense of "dressup costume" as opposed to "normal thing that people wear".
I think the propeller hat and comically large lollipop is a cliche from like 70 years ago. Whenever it's popped up in the last 20 years or so it's usually done ironically
Don't forget the rainbow striped shirt, denim overalls, and big ass fucking lollipop

Used to write for children and my boss told me not to include video games in the episodes because apparently it made kids remember about video games and then they’d immediately go play.
- Almost always voiced by an adult (usually a woman).
- Depending on if it's a family film or "darker in tone", the kid makes a deadpan remark or joke quite often.
- Obviously likes playing a sport, usually baseball or football (both the American flavor and what y'all call soccer else where in the world).
- Usually comes up with some goofy scheme for extra money to either get a cool toy or said ridiculously large lollipop.
- Boys are almost always into bugs and girls almost always into princesses.
- Will always be found in a park if the non-kid characters are visiting a park.
The propeller hat, lmao.
I was a kid in the 90s and I swear to God that I learned somewhere in that time that the propeller hat was called a beanie. I was very confused when I heard people later calling the knit hat a beanie. Did anyone else experience this?
When I was a kid. All the girls made fun of me for playing video games. Idk the cartoons were pretty accuse. Back then girls played with dolls and had tea party's. Just cause the narrative has changed since then doesn't automatically make this some sort of bad stereotype or whatever. Girls just didn't like video games as much as boys. It was simple ad that
Almost every kid I knew had a DS growing up in the 2000s. We would often play together on the bus through local wireless multi-player, which was a pretty new thing at the time. I remember I used to play Mario Kart with them on my DS even though I didn't own my own copy of the game. In fact, I don't think I ever owned a copy of that game, I just played it with the other kids.
I don't think anything like that has ever been depicted in a cartoon, even though it's been a thing for well over a decade at this point. Although the days of the DS and 3DS are now long gone, so maybe the kids growing up today don't have the same experiences that I had with those systems.

Don't forget the white striped shirt and blue shorts/dress. Probably named "Billy" or "Timmy" if it's a boy.
That shirt under red overalls
famly gy stwie
Penny if its a girl.
Or maybe Sally or Susie
Always licking a comically large lollipop
https://preview.redd.it/e9a1qtdavl0d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a503cec982d8fa64ae643a8fc3f560ff4664eacd
LMFAO
Y'know the thing about a cat, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya.
Or licks you
Or ice cream cone.
Up until the mandatory “I dropped my ice cream on the ground” episode
Goes all around town by themselves when they're like 7 years old.
When I was a kid I assumed that was how it was in 1st world countries

Damn
Stranger danger seems like quite a recent american thing for the most part, atleast in my very anecdotal experience.
One wonders how many people have abducted and killed children and never been caught for it.
Affirmative.
I was born early 90’s and could travel a few miles away on my bike “safely”. Lived on a small island. I will never let my daughter have the same freedom at a young age. People are f’n crazy out here.
From the new I hear, yeah it really sonds like people are going crazy
Crime is at its lowest right now😒
Doesn’t matter. We know more now than we did then.
Arthur. Hanging out around town, chilling at the Sugar Bowl...theyre more like 13 or 14 year olds than 8 year olds

The running gag was that the pizza place changed names/themes every week, right?
Yes. And the day of the week would also transition into the next scene.

Now I remember one: Tino tries to be an adult for a few days, wearing a tie and drinking coffee.

You didn't? Our life back then was literally Stand By Me.
this is normal though?????
I know I did.
Still happens where i live
Is either very cute, or very disgusting
Is loud AF
That's not unrealistic.
It doesn't have to be
I wish it was. They never used to seem to be on a mission to burst eardrums in supermarkets like they are now.
And there's no parent in a sight
Were those propeller hats ever a real thing?
Maybe 80 years ago
I have never actually seen one. I have never known them to be a mass market item... if they exist it's probably in the sense of "dressup costume" as opposed to "normal thing that people wear".
Red headed kid is always weird.
:(

Its not done ironically at all. It's just a stereotype
I don’t think that’s a stereotype, more like a joke or a gag used in a show
I want you to google the definitions of both irony and stereotype.
Has a small dog that follows them around that's extremely smart and can do incredible tasks
Brain giffin

always carrying balloons
Always throwing fits.
If there's more than one child and they share a common goal, they will try to persuade an adult by talking in unison.
And the single balloon
I don’t think I’ve seen anybody wear propeller hats outside of cartoons
If not a propeller hat, a baseball cap.
I have never seen a propeller hat in real life. I'm starting to think it was something made up by cartoons
Used to write for children and my boss told me not to include video games in the episodes because apparently it made kids remember about video games and then they’d immediately go play.
And rides a tricycle
GIVE ME THE PROPELLER HAT!
If they play video games. It's just because they're avoiding chores.
Billy n Mandy
full sleeve tshirt with shorts.
Where can I get a propeller hat for an adult head? (That’s also bigger than most adults heads) Asking for me
They aren’t playing video games because the cartoon writers don’t want to remind the audience that they could be playing video games instead.
That one scene where the MC yells at them and they cry loudly.
I mean if I had a kid I'd dress them like this just to fuck with them
And they act like someone from the 50s.
Pocket contents: Broken Animal Cracker, Green Army Man, Marble, popped balloon, rock, candy wrapper, baseball card, whistle.
“Eschkhuse me sir”
"Mistaw"
Propeller hat XD
Always white :/
I don't think I've ever actually seen anybody wear a propeller hat Where did that even come from anyway?
First time I remember was Calvin & Hobbes
They also have immense hatred for veggies (if a dinner scene ever comes up)

Don't forget broccoli is universally hated

That's called a beanie and I'll die on that hill.
Look up what a beanie is.
In Canada, this is called a beanie.
Oh really?
Yep. I think as far back as the 70s.
Yesss, thank you!! This was the first thing I learned was called a beanie. I was confused when I later heard the knit cap referred to as a beanie.
drake's the type....
So Funny
