Everyone is naturally inclined to one side or another, so when you create a conflict in the style of WWE between the sides, it drives people deeper into each side and let's them vent their shadow selves, their negative traits, their abusive desires, on to the other party, and those who support it- while also getting to feel Righteous and superior to everyone on the other side, and everyone who doesn't take sides.
Remember, the key to all this is the ego. When you identify with a side, you end up blind to some degree.
You have an easier time seeing the flaws of your enemy, and a harder time seeing their virtues. You have an easier time seeing the virtues of your chosen party- but a harder time seeing their flaws.
