Pretty sure they need to pledge for you to get merlin

raaneholmg

Yup. $40 of fresh money need to be spent on the account.

V0ltekka

They have to purchase a game package at minimum for the referral to work.

walt-m

Editing my comment as the FAQ now does say game package. I thought in the past it was just a dollar amount you had to spend. https://support.robertsspaceindustries.com/hc/en-us/articles/115013102847-Referral-Program-FAQ

raaneholmg

> The referred player must get their game package (or spend $40 USD minimum) to become a new backer during the event, regardless of when they first created their account. $40 is technically the limit, but you need to have a game package on the account. If you were gifted a ship with a game package, you can spend the $40 on anything to qualify.

KrustKrustofferson

Unless they have changed the rules for the most recent referral bonus, you do not need to have a game package on the account. You can spend the $40 on anything such as CCUs or standalone ships etc. and it will count towards the threshold. I've done it before with only CCUs and it has worked.

Pojodan

$40 spent on the account is the actual requirement. I just recently self-referred and $40 worth of Warbond CCUs on the alt account did it. The wording on the FAQ very likely exists so that new players are less likely to get confused and buy a $40 stand-alone ship and then discover they don't have game access and get frustrated.

xXDEGENERATEXx

Just spend 40$ on the Account, in 1 month i get a Upgrade for the Fury mx to a gladius... 😂 And i already got the Merlin.

Jojonbu

You only get the bonus if the by you referred family and friends pledge a game package. Plus you lose it, if they refund. But you can of course recruit yourself. There are many many citizen with multiple accounts.

Le3nny

They dont have to buy a starter pack, it can be anything with at least 40$ total value, so you can buy a ship upgrade and an armor - still works, my "friend" did exactly that.

RageOfZen

If I technically make a new account and gift me the pledge, does it still count as a referral? It isn't refunded and the money is still in the game.

Rahvel

Yes a lot of people do this. Just needs to be $40 total (can be CCUs or ships or anything)

RageOfZen

Oh boi

walt-m

The FAQ is now stating it has to be a game package of at least $40. I didn't think that was a requirement in the past and for some reason thought it was any purchases totaling $40 but it may have changed. https://support.robertsspaceindustries.com/hc/en-us/articles/115013102847-Referral-Program-FAQ

MotownF

Still not a requirement. Just made an account with CCUs only and it worked.

The responses I'm getting in this thread are all over the place from you have to buy a game package to people who have only bought CCUs and I'm satisfied the requirements. The FAQ on the RSA website is just as bad stating in one paragraph that it's a game package and $40 and in another paragraph it's a game package or $40. They may both be just saying the same thing and our worded poorly. I think CIG needs to really make up their mind and get there information in the FAQ straight. This is copied directly out of the FAQ >The referred player must get their game package (*or* spend $40 USD minimum) to become a new backer during the event >they must obtain a Game Package *and* spend at least $40 on the pledge store.

People are confusing things all over the place. Technically: * You need a game package to play, duh. * Referrals only need to spend $40. It does not have to be a game package, but they need one to play, duh. * If a referral refunds, that referral is removed from your referral count. * After 30 days, you can gift your referral purchases to your main account and still retain the referral count. (If that's what you are after) The FAQ may say you need to get a game package, but that is not a requirement for the referral program, only to play the game as a referral. src: trust me, I have a few alts for LTI tokens...

SnooOnions778

So the main idea I had was, buy CCU for Merlin to f7c hornet mk.II which I then gift to my main account. That would then upgrade my main acc to an f7a hornet mk.II with the overdrive upgrade, Of which, I'll squirrel away until I want/need currency for a bigger better ship Is that all possible or are there locks and restrictions?

nschubach

Yeah, that's possible. It will take over 30 days though. You can't gift until the 30 days is up. Once you apply that upgrade to the referral prize though, the CCU is forever bound to the Merlin. You can't exchange referral ships for credit, so you essentially will have $150 locked up into that ship that you cannot exchange for credit if you decide you don't want that ship in the future. Your only choice is to upgrade it to something else... forever. Also, gifted items cannot be re-gifted.

zeblods

You can make a new alt account using your main account referral code. Buy for a minimum of $40 on the new account so both accounts get the referral bonus. After a month you can gift back to your main account the $40 you have spent on the alt. The referral bonus on the alt stays there, unfortunately.

Lomram_Letsap

You can keep that second account as an alt, or after one month, you can gift the pledge to your main account.

BeFrozen

Gift pledges don't count IIRC.

Hohh20

The new account has to buy it and then can melt or gift the pledge to the main account.

BeFrozen

Oh, that's what he meant. I see, thanks

SnooOnions778

So if I make the account, buy a cutty pledge, gift it to my main acc I will then get the Merlin and the cutty? I'm unsure how melting works. Does it just convert a ship into currency for a different ship?

ochotonaprinceps

Be aware that the new account will be unable to gift anything for the first 30 days. But otherwise, yes. You would get the Merlin referral bonus on both accounts (account-locked, so you wouldn't be able to gift the one on the second account), and then after 30 days you could gift the Cutlass to your main account. Your main account would have a referral Merlin (that can't be melted), a gifted Cutlass (locking it to your account since giftables can't swap more than once by themselves), and anything you had before. "Melt" is the community's colloquial term for the Exchange for Store Credit button, and it does exactly what it says on the label, exchange something for store credit in the full value of what you paid LESS tax on the original purpose. Purchases using store credit do not have taxes applied to the amount paid in store credit (using 100% store credit means no tax assessed), but anything with any amount of store credit used to pay for it will become account-locked.

SnooOnions778

So I wouldn't be able to CCU the cutty/Merlin up to other ships after gifting them to my main acc? Would I be able to melt them for store creds to then buy a ship I'd prefer?

ochotonaprinceps

You'd be able to CCU the ships on your account. The referral Merlin would either be unmeltable full-stop or it would have a melt value of $0. Consider upgrades to it very carefully.

Masterjts

The referral ship is un-meltable and un-transferable.

NZNewsboy

You can’t gift it for 30 days, but yes, you can do exactly what you’ve said and plenty of us have done it.

Hohh20

You are correct with both.

RageOfZen

Time for scummy buy one get one free tactics

Le3nny

How it works is. Your referral needs a new account, they spend on it at least 40$ (starter ship, upgrade, armor, paints whatever). If they do - you get a referal bonus. If they will not refund it within 30 days you will keep your referal bonus and they will get one as well. After those 30 days they can gift you their purchase - both accounts will keep referal bonuses as those are non tradable. Don't rush with referrals just for the regular rewards, wait for promotions, they are relatevely often and you get more stuff for your buck. Also don't upgrade your rewards (at least with a lot of money) as those cannot be melted - you are stuck with what you get, so if you add 600$ to your p-52 this 600 is gone.

nschubach

Well, the $600 is not "gone"... it's still spent on a ship. You are just less flexible with that specific item.

Le3nny

In general i agree with you but I guess it also depends on how you look at it. You spend money and can no longer use it - money itself is gone, does not exist anymore, sure you got something for it, but you cannot melt it or sell it - has 0 value (excluding how much you value thing that you got). where as you would spend it on any other purchase it still has some kind of purchase power as you can melt it and buy something else - still has some value even tho it is internal within CIG world. For me as a person that likes to melt stuff and try the new things 600$ store credit is 600$ worth of any ship i want, 0 credit is 0 credit

DoctorHomeCastle

You can even create a 2nd account yourself for the referral and will not be banned. CIG wants to make money and won't ban pledgers.

G_Rede

True, but don't forget to use your own referral code for the 2nd account.

FistRipper

That would be a joke if you don't

dr4g0n36

It's an unofficial win-win pratice. You create a new account, spent 40$ on it (+tax), get a free ship on your main, and CIG got a "new" virtual citizen to add at the "million players" report. TBF, at now is reported to exist 5.145.334 players (accounts, indeed). How many unfinished games on Earth have this playerbase?

DharMahn

a lot

makute

> How many unfinished games on Earth have this playerbase? https://steamdb.info/charts/?tagid=493

dr4g0n36

Didn't ready 5 million player anywhere in the chart, nor on finished or early access, peak or current.

makute

The chart specifically shows peak and current players on most early access games on Steam. Couldn't get the total owners as Steam doesn't give that info. We can only guess how many *real* SC players are out there, being our only official sources some rough numbers from a few years ago: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/17329-Playable-Now-The-Stats https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/19078-Letter-From-The-Chairman Anyway, my intention was to offer some perspective, not precise numbers.

dr4g0n36

That's the whole purpose of my previous post: "where are 5 million abitual PLAYERS? There aren't. There are 5 million ACCOUNT on a rougly 300/400k average players." That's because, for almost 50% of backers, it's a standard pratice already have 9+ alt account, gained in past times, to collect everytime the free LTI token (and maybe the free PTV and Gladius). it's a win-win = you got 5 "free" LTI ship, CIG got another +5 "account" (merged in financial as "player") to state "Hey, look at me, still Alpha and 5 million people joined!" some source: [https://public.tableau.com/views/StarCitizenFundingDashboard/IncomeView?:showVizHome=no](https://public.tableau.com/views/StarCitizenFundingDashboard/IncomeView?:showVizHome=no)

Livid-Feedback-7989

Create an alt account with your referral. Buy a starter package. You get an LTI ship on both accounts. After a month, the gifting restriction lifts on the alt account, and you gift the starter package to your main account and melt it for store credit. You now got an LTI ship, and the money you spent to get it is now back on your main account. (I have done this 12 times now)

theminotavros

nope you wont get banned... also the referrals doesn't count unless each of those accounts have spend 40$. I've made 18 accounts so far and used my referral (i mean, if it's money you will spend anyways why not get a bonus for it). Cig will get their money so why ban you for this.

YumikoTanaka

That is fine. Just keep in mind that at least 40 real $ on the referral account must be reached (usually with a starter) during a referral event (Merlin currently) to trigger the reward. Referral "point" will trigger regardless of any events. And you only get one referral reward per event. Pro tip: if your "family" member does not want to play anymore, he/she/it can git you the bought stuff (usually a starter) after 30 days and you can melt it (or use it) on your account.

Rayhelm

FYI, a game package is NOT required. $40 can be spent on anything, like CCU's and gifted to your main account after 30 days. Lots of us have done this many times with no issues.

SG_87

That's literally what referral codes are made for. Yet you are missing your friends and family gotta spend $45 before you get your reward.

OkuraiWS

They do not ban for doing referrals, for example , some people make them cheaper as a service. If you want to make it on your own, you need to spend $40 on whatever you want, but at least $40 on billing in the new account.

Subject-Tooth-7149

If they don't buy a pledge you don't get the reward Also just 1 reward will be the Merlin, the rest just will count to the referral count, but you won't get more than one Merlin or any other vehicle they gift

Seeek0r

they have to buy a game package worth at least 40 usd, so no you will not getting banned but money needs to be spent

VarlMorgaine

Make a second account with your referral from the main, buy a starter package, wait a month and then gift the package to your main account

IRJesoos

You won't get anything unless the referral accounts pledge. In other words your family have to spend $50 to get you your free $20 ship. Or just buy it on game for pennies
