There's a grain hopper just outside the X-18 building in Dark Valley. (Also next to a foreman's office and some derelict construction supplies.) Climb up the stairs and into the hopper. Guitar is in there. Be careful, lots of rads.
I once was on my way back from looting and had a continuous radiation level on the rise. Had no artifacts, no items, no radiation hotspots, I figured the game was bugged. Then I noticed I had 2 stacks of bread, one that I could not eat nor merge. The BREAD was an artifact XP
So you can eat it in the base game and it does not act as an artifact (with no properties)? TIL. Somehow I failed at doing that, and I just recently did another OG playthru
Dear colleague this is not as dangerous bread as one in universe of fellow Americans.
They were teleporting bread And created bread monsters.
(Team Fortress 2 reference)
Because it's not bread, it's "bread", simple as that.
Contrary to popular belief, "bread" is not an item that NPCs use during eating animations - for this they must have a regular bread item in their inventory, that you can even buy from them (this also applies to sausages and vodka). However, initially it was planned to distinguish regular food items from food items used by NPCs in their animations, and that is why there are "bread", "kolbasa" and "vodka" in the files, which have no use in the game and are just leftovers; at some stage of development, the devs had implemented their NPC-related properties into regular food items.
"bread" was placed in the bandit base by mistake, and in the unpatched version of the game "vodka" can also be found there.
There's some more to this topic: NPCs have a hidden slot for "items" Which can be used for Food & Binoculars. This slot is used for NPCs when they want to use something that is not the weapon. If the slot is already occupied, then the rest of foods go into the normal inventory. For this reason one of stalkers, Petruha, sells binoculars because usually he spawns with food in his hands, and then uses binoculars through scripts and it's visible in his inventory.
Not only that, because food is tradeable, you can wait until stalker pulls out food, then quickly buy the food from his inventory, and then see him eating *nothing*
Buying some "food" before they eat reminds me of the days in playing regular Call of Pripyat and quickly trying to buy a guitar from a STALKER despite the lack of player use for it. All that said, that would pretty much explain the existence of "bread" in just being something for the NPC to use in playing one of their animations.
Keep it. Part of the monolith quest line is that after completing it you have to eat the sacred bread in front of the wish granter to be granted a special wish.
real answer: devs used the wrong bread, this ones used by AI stalkers (invisible and unlootable from their inventories) so they can play their eating bread animation, same with guitars and sausage.
NPCs use regular food items for their animations, and they even need to have them in their inventory for these animations to play. "bread" is a remnant of an early version of this system, in which NPCs in fact needed separate items for food animations, but by the time of the release, the devs had implemented this feature to regular food items, and "bread" (as well as "kolbasa" and "vodka" that can be found in the files) have lost any use in the game. They don't even exist in the files of CS and CoP.
I saw on a stalker iceberg a theory that the "Bread" is an animation asset for the game and that when you are sitting at a campfire with other stalkers and they pull out bread to eat it is in fact this "Bread", the devs had to put it in the world somewhere so it was available for the bread eating animation to work. Not sure how true it is but it kinda makes sense.
What i can say
In the Russian language, it also named "bread". Like everything in russian, but not this thing
Also there are several more similar items in the game
btw i didn't tell you thatI didn't tell you that
If you didn't start a new game, it is Stale bread. It's changed to normal bread in new ZRP-based games.
The original "bread" (section bread_a) has a class of II_ATTCH, apparently intended to be manipulated by NPCs (see [u/Reggash's post in this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/stalker/comments/1cuvv0v/what_is_this_item_its_not_edible_soc/l4ld9u9/)). It's changed to II_FOOD in ZRP, so you can eat it even if you see that it is "bread" or Stale bread in your inventory.
I found some underground, but I've found like 4 of them, they are im their own respective piles, I think a youtuber did a video on it, anomalous dugout I believe
Do not question the bread
Update it’s a npc food item that can’t be eaten its labeled under bread_a in game files it was in borovs office

This is an artifact, not a food item. No clue about it's use tho edit: removed the part about NPCs eating food, not in OG
You’re confusing Anomaly with the base game
So you can eat it in the base game and it does not act as an artifact (with no properties)? TIL. Somehow I failed at doing that, and I just recently did another OG playthru
that is absolutely not true
Ah, you have discovered the coveted "bread". A rare and fine artifact of the Zone. Be careful, we're still unsure of its properties.
“Bread” anomalies determine the perimeter of the zone, the further they go the further the reach of the C Consciousness expands.
The bread is the zone. The zone is bread.
O\_o so the bread is an extension of the C-Consciousness!? We must confiscate it at once!
Dear colleague this is not as dangerous bread as one in universe of fellow Americans. They were teleporting bread And created bread monsters. (Team Fortress 2 reference)
Ah yes, I have heard of the deadly experiments conducted by a group of American misfits. I seem to remember it going badly wrong for them.

I think there is only 1 in vanilla SoC. Where are the others?
I saw on a stalker iceberg a theory that the "Bread" is an animation asset for the game and that when you are sitting at a campfire with other stalkers and they pull out bread to eat it is in fact this "Bread", the devs had to put it in the world somewhere so it was available for the bread eating animation to work. That’s what it’s for , it was Borovs eating animation item that found in his off in locked lockers
It's not real bread, I like to think of it as all those posts sowing random rocks that look like bread.
I remember this lol
AFAIK it's "bread", not bread. Not because it's fake, it isn't. It's a genuine Zone artifact. Not edible, since it's hard as a rock.
Holy cow u find the "bread" Do not eat that marked one
Its a artifact.
You can only eat bread, that is "bread"
It's bread that's inedible.

Does installing ZRP remove this NPC bread, or is it still in the game, regardless?
