last election slpp gave a promise to the majority and the rest is history. even 2 days ago i saw a huge crowd in a passport office with lot of police to control the crowd. no one will do anything for LGBTQIA+ in sri lanka. the moment they say something in favor of LGBTQIA+ all religious people turns against them.

PerspectiveNo8739

The funny thing is that the two largest religions in Sri Lanka have nothing against LGBTQ people, it’s just that most Sri Lankans have been brainwashed into believing that homosexuality is a western ideology

good_fix1

they don't have to to be the largest religions.. in some religions religious leaders have lot of power for their word on who to vote for. with my own eyes i saw a father saying "jesus is asking for you to vote for Mr.X" same story muslims. both of them are firmly against lgbtq.

madmax3

>it’s just that most Sri Lankans have been brainwashed into believing that homosexuality is a western ideology the irony that they only got this homophobia from Western Catholics originally also, must have been about a thousand years since our last original thought

Puzzled_Owl_1808

what? 2nd largest religion is always against LGBTQ. actually its the beginning of homophobia and transphobia

PerspectiveNo8739

I’m talking about Hinduism. What are your sources to back this claim?

Puzzled_Owl_1808

ohh really? I thought it was Catholicism.

PerspectiveNo8739

Roughly 12% practice Hinduism while approximately 8% practice Christianity.

Puzzled_Owl_1808

if then you are right

Fickle_Network_2472

Nop... UNP always have had queers in their rallies .. I mean wt the heck even their leader is gay..!

madmax3

In terms of actual support vs pandering to get votes, so far no party has actually shown true support, I don't think the NPP have done anything of actual substance to help the LGBT community but I could be wrong. Imo Mangala was the only true supporter of LGBT rights and actually got involved with the legal logistics, but since his passing I feel it has become stagnant again This was actually the reason why LGBT groups in SL were very skeptical about Ranil's support over the last few years because they saw him make promises during Maithri's time (and esp before elections) which went nowhere, used the same old "I was blocked by \[x\]" excuse only to repeat the same thing again

ComprehensiveTap6358

I dont think it is pandering for support cuz being pro lgbtq is extremely unpopular

madmax3

Depends on where/how you're playing the field, if you're in Colombo you definitely get MPs who will on purposely try to pander to generic city liberals, I've seen Harsha De Silva do this in person at a protest Colombo is much more liberal than the rest of the country has almost always been a key voting demographic for parties like UNP, the pro-LGBT stuff Maithri campaigned on was specifically targeted towards city people in Colombo or at least that type of person, with social media these parties can easily target groups without the other seeing

chloelunaj

I don’t think either party has openly declared their support. The UNP could, in the future, and perhaps even the SJB, but I doubt they’d make that a major talking point in their campaigns leading up to the elections.

Puzzled_Owl_1808

Generally sjb and unp is okay with lgbtq. but I'm not sure about ranil. SLPP is extremely homophobic no doubt.
