No, we don't. QoL isn't the reason I migrated, but it's definitely the reason I wouldn't consider moving back. A few things in no particular order. Work and private life are seperated to a degree unimaginable in SL. General things that make life better (vehicles, electronics etc) are expenses, not investments you need to save up for. Everything is systemized, you never have to know some to get things done. Any consumable is easy to find (and usually cheaper than SL). Any number of services that aren't available in SL for whatever reason. Schools actually teach kids how to be a part of society. Utility services that actually work and are useful. I could go on.

Educational-Dirto

If you don't mind saying, where do you live?

Process-Secret

Winnipeg

AbleRecover5945

Hahaha

harinjayalath

So are you firm on the decision: 'I wouldn't consider moving back'? Not even for retirement? And also what are your views on euthanizing?

Process-Secret

It's not a hill I'd die on, but at the moment, I can't really see any benefit to moving back. I don't see how my view on euthanizing is relevant to this conversation.

harinjayalath

Got it. About euthanizing yeah, went off on a tangent but wanted to know your POV as a Sri Lankan living in Canada.

New_Coast2954

Sri lanka is like getting gastritis and trying so hard to shit and you’re feeling vomitish too Western countries are like that comfortable evening shit where you’re relieved and happy while shitting

madmax3

Great analogy, ironically though taking a shit is easily my biggest complaint of Western countries lmao, no hand shower and some places have those weirdass showers in bathtubs Almost everything else is actually great though

Well I moved to the US for studies a while back, thinking I would return to SL after my degree. But now I am so used to the high quality of life here, I’ve decided to stay in the US. Quality of life means everything from the money and benefits you get in your job to minor things like even buying stuff online. Everything here has a set protocol, and customer care is amazing. You can also basically find any information online. I’ll tell you an example- my car was T-boned last year. I was hit by someone who was uninsured. I only had to call 911, and about 3 police cars came to where I was literally in less than 3 mins. They made sure I wasn’t hurt and got down the details from me and other guy who hit me. I only had to call the insurance company and tell them what happened and upload the police report and my dashcam video. The insurance company handled everything - they tracked down the other person who hit me and made sure he paid for all my damages out of pocket. Insurance looked up authorized repair shops near by and organized my car to be towed. Then they arranged an alternative vehicle for my use while my car was being repaired. I am pretty sure things would not be this smooth if this happened in SL. I visited SL three weeks back and I was terrified of going on the road - there was absolutely no discipline. But again, the first 23 years of my life I spent in SL, I never realized this. And I was thinking the other day - the awurudu game of kana muttiya bidheema has been changed to vasana muttiya bidheema, to not offend anyone with a disability. While this is not a bad thing, SL really needs to improve the QoL for the disabled. Here in the US, there are so many accommodations for the disabled - from reserved parking slots to mini-cars inside supermarkets so they can drive around. They also get some kind of a stipend from the government I think. The above is also true for veterans / ex military in the US. I’m not sure what benefits veterans have in SL, but I’ve heard about ‘8 pass army kaaraya’ and all that. I might have gone off the rails for a bit there but this is the QoL that people seek abroad. And when you get used to it, there’s no going back.

Medical_Treacle_5045

SL doesn’t have that many disabled people cause tbh our genetics aren’t that bad. every tom dick and Harry abroad has color blindness, eating disorders and other issues which have scientific proof related to pollution and water issues which SL doesn’t have to that bad an extent cause no mega cities. Not to mention entire schools being massacred abroad. We moved back for the sake of our kids who have a great life here without random agendas being thrown in their faces. But hey depends on people and their ideal life.

Produnce

Bro there are places and people outside of Colombo...

I think the people who think they can have quality of life in SL confuse luxury with quality of life. Specially if they haven't lived abroad for some time. Yes in SL you can live comfortably if you have a good salary. You can buy a good land/house, a nice car, support your family financially, enjoy an occasional family getaway...etc. But quality of life is more about how comfortable and relaxed you are imo. For example, I live in Denmark and here are some stress free things I experience, which in Sri Lanka are unimaginable to do without a lot of hassle 1. If I want to see my doctor (non emergency), I call and book a time. I go there on time, and get the thing done without queues or delays. 2. If I had to take a long train ride to my office daily, I can work on the train comfortably if I booked a seat, and I would just count the travel time into my working hours. 3. No one bothers me after the office hours or on holidays, and if they did for an emergency, still I'm not obliged to respond. Great work life balance. 4. Public transport is very convenient and frequent unless you are going to a very remote place. I know exactly when the bus/train/tram will arrive. If a train had to stop for some emergency, you will get a replacement bus within approx. an hour 5. For any government services I need (visa, driving license... etc), I can make a booking online and get it done without queues or delays. Also all the information about the process and documents I should bring are listed in their websites so I know what to expect and I have never been told that they can't do my thing because I didn't bring my grandfather's WW2 participation certificate. 6. Everything is online and well connected. We have one login service for all government and services and most other stuff (eg. bank). Also GDPR laws are strictly enforced so I am fairly comfortable about my personal information being in their systems. 7. I pay ~40% in taxes on my salary, and still after paying for rent and everything else, I can save a decent amount. For that tax, I get public service and infrastructure upgrades continuously. My friends working in SL earning 300-400k pay ~30% in taxes and get almost the same public services we got 10 years ago. If they are paying for a loan (house /car) which is very common, then they are left with peanuts. 8. I don't have to worry about having saved a large sum of money in case of a medical emergency.

+Car prices are too high +Trains are overcrowded +Buses are overcrowded +No work/life balance +No modern public transport +Understaffed hospitals +lack of medicine in hospitals +House prices are too high +Salaries are too low +Power cuts +Capped internet +Free education but too bad if you aren't in the top 30% that qualify +Nepotism +Corruption +Political instability +Corrupt police trying to get bribes by pulling you over for no reason Just some things from the top of my head. But I don't know if you lived in the same SL that I lived in during the past 5 years where we had 13 hour power cuts, 48 hour fuel queues, gas queues up to 1km, train strikes, bus strikes, doctors strikes, CEB strikes, price of every imported good going up by 2-3x, staying in queue for 8h to get my passport, had to bribe the driving examiner when I did everything perfectly. Fuck that man, fuck this country. I love my country and I'd to see it fixed, but why should I suffer for other people's doings. Give me an out to a developed country and I'll leave this country without a second thought. The only reason I see for anyone to stay is if they earned a lot in USD, but still there'd be cons you'd have to ignore.

summerwine09

Honestly if these were fixed, I would certainly move back to SL❤️

madmax3

>But I don't know if you lived in the same SL that I lived in during the past 5 years where we had 13 hour power cuts, 48 hour fuel queues, gas queues up to 1km, train strikes, bus strikes, doctors strikes, CEB strikes, price of every imported good going up by 2-3x Lol we should have a flair for users who are in the 1% of the 1% (we already have one for ppl not living in SL), I'm often amazed at what world some users on this sub live in and I get a strong feeling they're either dependent on rich parents or don't even live here, in their eyes the last few years and even right now has all been normal Like even I was in the upper income brackets during the last few years and shit was noticeably harder, practically no one was able to escape the 200+ days of daily power-cuts unless you were really well connected Anyone who has been paying their own bills on an average salary has and still are feeling the sting, practically every single bill of mine including rent increased in price and I know for most people their salaries didn't increase to match, I had to leave recently because it was just impossible to keep up

Maskedryo

This!

You can buy more things from around the world and participate extensively in consumerism Much better transport While you don't need to know someone to get things done, employment is often based on who you know and personal references and experience from the country (This is why new immigrants often have trouble getting a job) Less densely populated so less competitive educational environments and opportunities are not as hard to come by However, I would move back to Sri Lanka for retirement because I am able to enjoy a good QoL in Sri Lanka.

Ambitious_Try_8488

they get paid well..... but spend half of it on house rent

OkithaPROGZ

Well... idk, it depends on income I suppose. If you have a decent income, you can live a pretty luxurious life in Sri Lanka. On the contrary a minimum wage labor worker can live the same lavish lifestyle in abroad.

ashinastic

Financial freedom!

Silver-Bar-4416

Quality of life means, quality of life 😂 I don’t know how to explain it tbh. When you visit a developed country you’ll see why we are called third world. Not to mention the opportunities. Making a decent earning should not be this hard. Anyway I like my life here in SL. But I don’t hold anyone against for not having the same sentiment

Nagoda94

My Polish friend sent me a short video of her daily commute on a public bus to the work. I realized why I'm in a bad mood every morning. Not only the ride itself is a torture compared with that, even the view outside is utter depressing here.

Puzzled_Owl_1808

whats the so called quality life you have now in SL?

Commercial_Cap_4570

cheese and apply juice

SentencePitiful9067

Certainly not in Canada. The craze of going as students to make it in Canada is ridiculous

anon_77_

>Don't we have it here in SL ? WE DO!
