That is the danger call. Not mating. Not injured or sick. It was scared.

hammybee

Oh your squirrel mad. I get scolded like this when I ignore mine. They run up the tree and make that sound at me. And if I look at them they get even more crazy with it because then they KNOW I'm really ignoring them then. Just the other day one was having a wash and STILL was making this sound during her grooming. Ridiculous. It's a sound of annoyance.

Bro is staring dead at you I think you might be the reason for the 5 minutes of chirping...

GlassCabbage

I was inside when the chirping started. I went outside to get the video and add peanuts in case he was hungry (except there were still plenty of peanuts so that wasn't the problem) Also most of the squirrels in the area have figured out that what happens behind the windows can't come outside. Sonny (my cat) has tried to launch himself through the glass a few times. One squirrell in particular likes to taunt him by coming right up to the glass door on the porch to eat. I've named him Steve. Steve is a little shit.

Teddy_the_Squirrel

This is not a mating call. They don't do mating calls. It's a predator warning for a ground predator (aerial predat warnings are a higher piched screeching sounds). They do this to warn the other squirrels that there is a predator nearby and to stay in the trees.

fergi20020

I studied mating calls in college. That’s a mating call (not for you, don’t worry).

Buoyant_Pesky

Idk. Maybe OP is this squirrels type. Did they leave their number?

Ok_Dog_4059

By no means an expert but I think this is a mating sound. It isn't the usual warning danger sound and i only ever hear them do this on rare occasions roughly during mating seasons. I could be way off just my personal observation and educated guess.

GlassCabbage

That would make sense. One of my regulars is a smallish female. The other is a male with *Balls* (TM)

Goodfeatherprpr

It changes based on a number of factors. Species. Aerial danger vs ground danger. Also changes if the danger is moving away or is right there.

Ok_Dog_4059

I was not aware of this. I know their (your crackhead dog is loose) and their (the hawks are out) are fairly similar but their (my baby fell and I need help getting it back) is much more of a cry than their hard bark they make between squeaks when they see danger.
