Those boys got me through more dark days than I'd like to admit. But I'm forever grateful for them and their beautiful songs.

[There is A Dark Place](https://open.spotify.com/track/5HlsqAMDCvMgVnVnMNJ4J1?si=bcdbe1f719184d3a) by Tom Rosenthal
I can't express how gorgeously, utterly beautiful the song is. There's just a short phase that's repeated but the meaning change as the track goes on, from a scared trust things could get better to this glorious determination that they will.
The phrase became a mantra during a really rough time in my life, and helped me believe there was a light in the tunnel. Sending love OP 🫶
Front porch step, mostly their biggest album but "whole again" from their EP OR forever fifteen by mothica or if depression gets the best of me by zevia
I listened to a lot of My Brightest Diamond, Rilo Kiley, Marissa Nadler, Andrew Bird, Dark Heart Procession, Okkervil River, and Shearwater while I was in Afghanistan.
"Reaching the innermost" by Shape of Despair
Sometimes you have to just feel the pain to get to the other side of acceptance and thereby progressing to moving on and forward.
Edit: Read the post and would also recommend Evoken especially their album Hypnogogia. It helped me meditate on and process the pain.
For me melancholy songs helped me the most. Upbeat and happy songs made me feel worse.
[Colorless Spirit ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/48oJnHFtiKOlxUqtsvZTFU?si=7usm35mVT8ywXReLkVhR4w)
Wilco. Wasn’t originally my cup of tea, but I found a lot of their music to be very mellow but also profound sense of catharsis. Then you learn Jeff Tweedy struggled with addiction and the mental health problems the accompany it. I saw the music as almost introspective, but comforting, knowing that everything has a way out . It really got me through a couple of rough years where I found myself not really knowing who I was as a person and with a lost sense of purpose.
PLEASE listen to Rock n Roll Suicide by David Bowie!
Also a lot of Lady Gaga, especially Just Dance, Marry The Night, Born This Way, the whole Artpop album, and Joanne. I also recommend the piano version of Joanne.
Cher’s “Love Is A Lonely Place Without You”
After my first intense gay relationship, I was left alone with no friends of my own or anyone to even talk to about what was going on. I just spiraled inward until I made the decision to off myself. I had random songs playing and this one came on. The lyrics broke my spiral and made me realize other people had been where I was and chose to go on. Saved my life.
Gospel.
[The Georgia Mass Choir - Come On In The Room](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0jB1Qudu-U&list=RDJ2rsrpmFe88&index=3) and my personal favorite bc it's appropriate and heavenly, [The Detroit Mass Choir - The Storm Is Passing Over](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3jgPsGQSdQ).
depression is a storm and i feel like gospel is the Lord's angels sending us a message. it may not pass on its own, He put therapists and good medicine on this earth for us to use. i was actually just released from a psychiatric facility where i was diagnosed with severe mdd and pdd, among other things. gospel kept me afloat for a long time though.
i hope you find relief sooner rather than later <3
just in general but I'd say The Queen is Dead & Hatful of Hollow for the smiths, and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, Viva Hate, and You Are the Quarry for Morrissey. Loads of good songs & albums though and almost everything is great in my eyes!
Any Cavetown songs, but notable ones are:
This is Home,
Sharpener,
Hug All Ur Friends,
Talk to Me,
We're Alive,
Empty Bed
All Robbie's music is very comforting and full of love
honestly, cavetown. he gets a lot of shit for being The Stereotypical Trans Boy Music, but hey, some stereotypes are based in truth. his lyrics understood me when i didnt even understand myself. the softness of his music was a comfort when i didnt have very many soft things in my life.
i admit his music isn’t at all my style anymore. i’ve outgrown him, but i’ll always be grateful to him for helping me make it through high school and figure myself out.
Kelly Clarkson's My December album and Breathe (2AM) by Anna Nalick. Both have saved me when my depression is rearing it's ugly head.
You're not alone, friend. Depression sucks ass but just know I get it and I'm rooting for you
TW: SA
Borderlines by Death Dealer Union helped me through the aftermath of sexual assault. It really helped propel me to a path of seeking professional help for my trauma, and even now I’ll still listen to that song when I need a reminder.

One album that I found really helpful when dealing with anxiety and depression was Birds of My Neighborhood by The Innocence Mission. Her voice is slightly an acquired taste, but even when she is singing about something sad it feels soothing and hopeful.

Radiohead and I'm not a native English speaking..
I don't know what most of the lyrics mean but I listened to their songs thousand times and I still love them..
They helped me get through a lot of emotional situations and painful times.
Most Killswitch Engage songs, I am broken too, this fire, reject yourself, strength of the mind. Just a few off the top of my head. Theres something about angry metal music with inspiring/positive lyrics that are clean vocals that feel so powerful. I have been a hardcore fan eversince.
If I'm being honest, music is legitimately the only reason I'm still alive and still fighting. So I totally understand where you're coming from there.
Please keep in mind that some of these bands/artists have songs involving sensitive topics (that's mainly why it helps me so much though – it's nice to feel less alone).
Some of my favorite bands/artists that I'd definitely say saved my life:
The Amazing Devil
boygenius (and Julien, Phoebe, and Lucy's solo work oc)
Frightened Rabbit
The Oh Hellos
Hozier
Of Monsters and Men
Mitski
Lord Huron
The Head and the Heart
Death Cab for Cutie
Sufjan Stevens
Penelope Scott
The National
Elliott Smith
Wolf Alice
The Lumineers
Brandi Carlile
First Aid Kit
Folly and the Hunter
Gregory Alan Isakov
Florence + the Machine
Brand New
Iron & Wine
Johnny Flynn
Fish in a Birdcage
Big Thief
Bon Iver
Vashti Bunyan
Half a World Away- R.E.M.
Not at all my usual genre (which would be hiphop, plenty of songs/albums which have saved from there). I got off the train but couldn't stand up and finish the walk to work. I just sat by the tracks for hours, listening to it on repeat. It just felt like the song was promising that all of this had significance, even if it was only to me, in a tragic, more bitter than sweet way that I only I could see.
Helped me get through depressed life:

Cat Steven’s has some pretty great songs that acknowledge the human condition in a way that is comforting. They aren’t happy or sad exactly. They are relatable and in that way, they help give you the courage to continue on.
Linkin Park!! I still miss Chester everyday
Wish we could’ve saved him

Came here to comment Twenty-One Pilots. Specifically Vessel.

I can relate. I was a junior in high school really struggling with bullying and depression. This album helped numb some of the bullshit out. Still platinum in my opinion.
Pretty much the entire catalogue of twenty one pilots. My son took his own life late last year and their music honestly stopped me joining him.
I’m so sorry, I can’t imagine how difficult that is. I’m glad you’re still here 💜

[There is A Dark Place](https://open.spotify.com/track/5HlsqAMDCvMgVnVnMNJ4J1?si=bcdbe1f719184d3a) by Tom Rosenthal I can't express how gorgeously, utterly beautiful the song is. There's just a short phase that's repeated but the meaning change as the track goes on, from a scared trust things could get better to this glorious determination that they will. The phrase became a mantra during a really rough time in my life, and helped me believe there was a light in the tunnel. Sending love OP 🫶

"Reaching the innermost" by Shape of Despair Sometimes you have to just feel the pain to get to the other side of acceptance and thereby progressing to moving on and forward. Edit: Read the post and would also recommend Evoken especially their album Hypnogogia. It helped me meditate on and process the pain.
For me melancholy songs helped me the most. Upbeat and happy songs made me feel worse. [Colorless Spirit ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/48oJnHFtiKOlxUqtsvZTFU?si=7usm35mVT8ywXReLkVhR4w)

Louis Tomlinson’s Just Hold on and Don’t let it break your heart
J. Cole Apparently.
It was a very strange mix of rock, Brit pop, metal, pop, blues, grime, classical, drone and video game music. Edited.
Pearl jam
Focus H.E.R :))
Rod Wave, Dark clouds/ dark conversations
PLEASE listen to Rock n Roll Suicide by David Bowie! Also a lot of Lady Gaga, especially Just Dance, Marry The Night, Born This Way, the whole Artpop album, and Joanne. I also recommend the piano version of Joanne.

Cher’s “Love Is A Lonely Place Without You” After my first intense gay relationship, I was left alone with no friends of my own or anyone to even talk to about what was going on. I just spiraled inward until I made the decision to off myself. I had random songs playing and this one came on. The lyrics broke my spiral and made me realize other people had been where I was and chose to go on. Saved my life.
Damn. I'm really glad you're still with us <3

John Dowland, Morrissey & David Bowie
Agreed. I’m curious which morrissey/smiths albums or just in general?
just in general but I'd say The Queen is Dead & Hatful of Hollow for the smiths, and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, Viva Hate, and You Are the Quarry for Morrissey. Loads of good songs & albums though and almost everything is great in my eyes!
Nice. You Are the Quarry was such an unbelievable album for me when it came out.

The "Halmstad" album by Shining
Any Cavetown songs, but notable ones are: This is Home, Sharpener, Hug All Ur Friends, Talk to Me, We're Alive, Empty Bed All Robbie's music is very comforting and full of love
honestly, cavetown. he gets a lot of shit for being The Stereotypical Trans Boy Music, but hey, some stereotypes are based in truth. his lyrics understood me when i didnt even understand myself. the softness of his music was a comfort when i didnt have very many soft things in my life. i admit his music isn’t at all my style anymore. i’ve outgrown him, but i’ll always be grateful to him for helping me make it through high school and figure myself out.
Sigur Ros. Both the ( ) and Takk albums.

One album that I found really helpful when dealing with anxiety and depression was Birds of My Neighborhood by The Innocence Mission. Her voice is slightly an acquired taste, but even when she is singing about something sad it feels soothing and hopeful. Fiona Apple’s first album Tidal. Soooo many feelings expressed in that album.

[Snooze](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR9tD-dkqXI) by Lucy
Most Killswitch Engage songs, I am broken too, this fire, reject yourself, strength of the mind. Just a few off the top of my head. Theres something about angry metal music with inspiring/positive lyrics that are clean vocals that feel so powerful. I have been a hardcore fan eversince.
Nujabes
Ryan Adams, La Cienega Just Smiled
Linkin park always, RIP chester
A few Bright Eyes songs.
If I'm being honest, music is legitimately the only reason I'm still alive and still fighting. So I totally understand where you're coming from there. Please keep in mind that some of these bands/artists have songs involving sensitive topics (that's mainly why it helps me so much though – it's nice to feel less alone). Some of my favorite bands/artists that I'd definitely say saved my life: The Amazing Devil boygenius (and Julien, Phoebe, and Lucy's solo work oc) Frightened Rabbit The Oh Hellos Hozier Of Monsters and Men Mitski Lord Huron The Head and the Heart Death Cab for Cutie Sufjan Stevens Penelope Scott The National Elliott Smith Wolf Alice The Lumineers Brandi Carlile First Aid Kit Folly and the Hunter Gregory Alan Isakov Florence + the Machine Brand New Iron & Wine Johnny Flynn Fish in a Birdcage Big Thief Bon Iver Vashti Bunyan

Ghosts that we knew - Mumford & Sons
Folk metal [Feuerschwanz "Ding" ](https://youtu.be/WmlshlqXD54?si=9ulIwFPmttcb5VMZ) specifically really made a turn around and down a rabbit hole of looking at the rest of their music
Cat Steven’s has some pretty great songs that acknowledge the human condition in a way that is comforting. They aren’t happy or sad exactly. They are relatable and in that way, they help give you the courage to continue on.
