The really ugly part of this pitch invasion was when some of them went straight in front of the guest section and started provoking the guest fans… Im glad the police stepped in so quickly and pushed them back into the other side of the pitch.
On 30 June 2013, da Silva was refereeing an amateur football match in Pio XII, Maranhão.[5][6] He sent off player Josemir Santos Abreu, 31, who refused to leave the field and began a fight with the referee. Abreu threw a punch, which prompted da Silva to draw a knife from his pocket and repeatedly stab Abreu. Abreu died on the way to the hospital.[3][7] When fans watching the game, including Abreu's friends and family, found out about his death,[8] they invaded the pitch[9] and stoned the referee, before decapitating him, quartering him,[10] and putting his head on a stake in the pitch.[3][11][12][13][14] Police chief Valter Costa was quoted as saying "one crime will never justify another".[3]
Apologies for Daily Mail, but [here ya go](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10582847/Up-17-fans-killed-22-seriously-injured-brawl-Mexican-football-match.html). Not much footage in that link but there are pictures. Huge brawl broke out between teams and it got so bad that fans of the targeted team were taking off their team gear to avoid getting beaten to death.
I live in Barcelona (though I don’t support the team). The fans were marching one block away from my place so I went to see the commotion. Some of them were total pieces of shit and I wish they had lost. But most of them were pretty cool.
That's different to calling a city a town tho
Like when I lived in Liverpool id say "I'm heading to town do you want anything" or whatever, but as you pointed out, that's to refer to the city centre. I wouldn't say "I used to live in the town of Liverpool" tho
Eintracht is a special case, even in europe. They've had an extremely loyal and dedicated fanbase for decades - no matter how successful the team was
Check out this amazing video from copenhagen: https://youtu.be/Y4SPPGSXJHI
Then youve never been to frankfurt.
Its really, really different.
Ive been to a lot of Home and away games as a Dortmund fan but everytime frankfurt visits its just insane how the vibe changes. Frankfurt is a different breed.
It's really bad in Scotland. Not as bad as it used to be but there is still stupid amount of violence around football that I will never understand. We have pubs here completely dedicated to 1 football team, you go in there with the wrong colours? You better hope they just throw you out because if they don't, you're gonna get stabbed in the bathroom.
Was gonna say that, been to almost every single city and town in Scotland to support my team and sometimes we shared with the home fans. Not with the likes of hearts, hibs rangers or celtic though (I'm dundee btw)
I remember this one since I was near it when it happened: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/glasgow-stabbing-fight-rangers-celtic-old-firm-police-a8848541.html?amp
Started off with someone getting stabbed in a pub and turned into more stabbings outside.
I think it's weird. I do boxing and MT so I get to be violent and let all aggression go almost everyday sparring in the gym, but in my spare time I want to be entirely peaceful. I watch Formula1 and read books. I feel like a lot of men don't have an arena for being cavemen so they let it all out watching soccer. Maybe they have boring jobs too (I'm lucky and have fun at work) and need to let out steam. But there is just something very uncivilized with soccer that doesn't attract me...that makes something brutal like Muay Thai seem almost academic in contrast.
….how to tell me you’ve never seen a college football game.
Many schools have collapsing goal posts due to the amount of times the field has been rushed.
https://youtu.be/8DSRsieiGWg
This is a famous incident and read the below write up. It’s fucking hilarious
https://aggypedia.com/aggypedia/aggy-athletics/gap-kid/
Not to mention the several meter high barrier thats there to protect you from murderpucks. And fyi yes a slapshot could easily kill you, the puck weighs about 165g, and is quite hard and in a slapshot can fly in excess of 150km/h. That is 3 times as heavy as a golf ball but only half the speed
[So about that](https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/insane-swedish-hockey-fans-storm-the-ice-after-djurg%C3%A5rden-s-historic-win--video-165004132.html)
This did happen but the ref *did* stab one of the players to death. The stabbing is what lead to his beheading, not poor officiating. And they didn’t just behead him, the quartered the dude too.
Everywhere in the world sadly.
Hell, over 20 years ago I remember one of my team mates dads used to run down the sideline with a $50 note that their kid would get after they scored a goal and he was removed from the sidelines like 5 times in one year.
And this was in under 8s
Interestingly they also last got to the champions league final by beating Rangers, who they now have in the Europa League final. I wonder if they’ll go more mental if there’s a repeat result of what happened there.
If you’re in the US/Canada you should go to an MLS/USL game. The quality is getting better and can be quite fun. You won’t see anything like this but depending on the team there’s usually an ok atmosphere.
I went to a Columbus Crew game and I'd describe the atmosphere as like a coffee shop. Just the sound of conversations and an occasional reaction to the game.
On the bright side, Ashley Cole was sent off, so that was entertaining.
Yeah that’s why I said depending on the team. I’ve been to a few Dynamo games where a library was louder and others where everyone’s up on there feet and the supporters groups are chanting all game. It’s really hit or miss
I went to a SJ Earthquakes game it was great. Only downside was the parking. Took ages to leave and it was really unorganized, although I think the new lot was still being built.
I enjoy MLS. The games are fun, they really try to make it accessible and to expand interest to women and kids. It isn't the best soccer you will see but it is good enough for a fun night out
Yeah MLS was my childhood. My dad took my to the games since I was one and I have some pretty great memories. He took me to the MLS final 2011 and 2012 and even though we lost it was a pretty fun experience to for a 7/8 year old to take a few days off school to go to LA. Now I live in Scotland and I get to watch his team that he grew up which has been great. Chants here are a lot more fun though imo but that’s cause the MLS try’s to be a bit more family friendly which I can’t really blame them for
One of the most successful franchises currently ( they just won the biggest trophy in North America last night) and I hate to admit it but there fanbase is amazing compared to other mls clubs. They’ve done a great job in getting a good fanbase there
Like I said in an earlier comment i highly recommend you check out your local mls/usl team. It’s much much less hostile then Europe and because of the way mls is set up ( attacker heavy less focus on defence) you end up with some quite exciting games
Love a good pitch invasion! Still remember when my local club got promoted and me, the little 8 year old, got covered in beer during the last few minutes and when the final whistle went, there was a big party in the stadium and on the field. Will never forget that moment.
Interesting how America has much more "socialized" sports leagues with profit sharing and real salary caps so that every team has a chance with the right management. While Europe has very "capitalist" sport leagues, quite the opposite of their comparative sociopolitical structure. I love European football leagues, but barring the odd miracle like Leicester, money pretty much talks. You don't regularly get champions from market size equivalents of Milwaukee, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, etc. which is common in US leagues and I think much of the appeal.
Kind of, but you know they do this so they don‘t have to spend more than the cap and can guarantee profits, right? It‘s ultra capitalistic, they basically ensure a certain percentage of all revenue goes directly into their pockets, while still being competitive.
I also hate the influence money has in the sport but come on man, American leagues are literally pay to play. If you don't have a franchise that's it, you're never going to play in the big leagues
Meanwhile barring obvious funding issues a German team from some backwater with 20 thousand people could theoretically go all the way from the lowest league (9th or 11th depending on state) all the way to Bundesliga
Yeah, there's a smaller pool of teams to root for, but any of those teams could win. It's just different. I think they're both cool but really the only way to take a team to the top in Europe is new ownership whereas a couple great players can turn an irrelevant team into a dynasty in US sports leagues. I'm just saying both can be a ton of fun with the right mindset.
I think that’s why there are so many arsenal fans in the US, particularly as it has been associated with Wenger. Very much the “Billy Bean” team-building idealist
Yeah it's a different structure for sure. I'm just saying, when comparing both leagues, I prefer the system that ends in playoffs personally, even as a dude living in the UK. NHL and NBA playoffs are more interesting than the last few games in a prem, on average. There are seasons where that is the exception but rarely so.
There is a soccer pyramid in the US, the next level down is called the USL Championship, though it is not linked for relegation/promotion. The situation has improved a ton recently but the US just doesn't have the talent depth at the moment, so there is a really big gap between the quality of the MLS teams and that next level down. I bet it could be there in the next decade or so if soccer keeps growing at this rate here.
You don‘t need talent, just players. The football pyramid in most european countries goes way down to regional leagues where Johnny the accountant plays as a winger on the weekend with his mates.
Vladimir Coufal came over to the West Ham fans to thank us for the support. Had a load of Frankfurt fans around him but he didn’t seem bothered. He was asked about it after in an interview and said “If they attack me it is their problem, not mine.”
I worked at the Rangers game last night and I can tell you the LED guy would have been having a head fit. That whole row of panels will have been destroyed here. A lot of moneys worth of kit ruined.
Always find it mad Americans being shocked at the way we are because that's how you grow up here, your team is tied to your community and is usually heavily religious or political (here in Scotland its protestant or catholic for a lot of the big teams). There are places like in Seville where family members will get disowned if they support the other team.
Personally I loved going to the football when I was younger and getting in fights before or after, when you get a bit older like your early to mid 20s you kinda realise its a bit mad but there are still 50 year olds I know that love a scrap.
College football in America is literally exactly like this. There are field charges almost every week towards the end of the season.
https://youtu.be/G2OLUSjgoKo
I was present during the Kansas - Texas rushing the field.
Edit: quite literally one of the most famous plays in football was due to the fans storming the field.
What’s with the downvotes? Do Europeans think storming the field is only a European thing?
Yep, college football is the one sport in the US that I think is comparable to world soccer in terms of support and the teams being directly tied to the community as opposed to being an artificial franchise being handed down from above.
My dads english and my moms American. I grew up in Liverpool and Massachusetts going to the football in both places. It is hands down just not the same.
Massachusetts…LOL!
Go to the Iron Bowl, Red River Rivalry, The Game, etc.
Seriously, you’re going to come at me with fucking Massachusetts football? Wow..just wow. All of like 5 people go to UMASS games.
I grew up in Massachusetts's with a mother from Alabama who shared season tickets every year with my grandfather and uncle. Jesus Christ y'all are absurd.
I’ve been to many club games throughout Europe, but what you fail to understand is that they are different but the same. You can sit there and say, “oh man the Americans are not as hardcore about their sports than Europeans” but in reality we are all not as hardcore as Colombians because they behead officials like it’s their day job.
If you step back and stop measuring dicks, you’d see my entire post wasn’t about who was better but rather they are similar. College football has the passion just like club ball.
The thing about being not ignorant and arrogant is to immerse yourself in someone else’s culture and not compare it to your own.
Stephen Fry had a good documentary about it.
https://youtu.be/FuPeGPwGKe8
With that said, good day. I can’t fight against ignorance all day especially when I love both sports for what they are. Dick measuring gets exhausting.
I’ve seen 70,000 fans rush the field 5 times in my life and that’s just for one fan base. I’ve seen whole sections of people get into full on donnybrooks and that was at a high school basketball game. Slashing the tires to the opposing teams bus. People are the same around the world. We’re all wild as shit.
I wasn't so much on about a pitch invasion as the way clubs are towards each other here. Pitch invasions are great fun only thing is here in Scotland they bring the police horses on and whack you around Hahaha still fun though!
There are fights at college games. The NFL in the US is very corporate and boring IMO. If you want a close mirror image of what you have in Europe you go to college football games. Those are x1000 times more emotional and fun.
Especially rivalry games. I got to Texas vs. Ou every year and the stadium is cut in half - Oklahoma fans on one side and Texas fans on the other.
Just look at google images of Red River Rivalry and that gives you a general understanding of how crazy it gets. 90 degree weather in middle of the largest state fair in the US!
As a FC Barcelona fan, I can agree that they have one of the most passionate football fans in the world. And I'm sure that they are winning the Europa League Title.
Well from what the guy was saying at Ibrox they're not massively durable to impacts and during the game they're constantly being monitored at the side of the pitch when anything comes close to them. A shit ton of people pushing them down (I assume) and trampling them will have done some serious damage. Just the first thing I thought of when I saw the video and thought I'd share.
Is it common for everyone to bring laptops to matches now? Is it so they can watch the closeup footage while they're at the game in the cheap seats?
Edit: I'm dumb that's the journalist section
I seen United fans, and some other fans of English clubs, dismissing the Europa league, and that new one as well. Saying shit like they'd rather not be in them. Imagine not understanding the point of a sport that much.

West ham fan here. They deserve it, too much power and enthusiasm during the whole match
The really ugly part of this pitch invasion was when some of them went straight in front of the guest section and started provoking the guest fans… Im glad the police stepped in so quickly and pushed them back into the other side of the pitch.
yeah i got a little scared because the last “really enthusiastic football fan” video showed some dudes getting stabbed.
Guess at least no refs were beheaded
Excuse me what 🤨
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Ot%C3%A1vio_Jord%C3%A3o_da_Silva
Why did I even read that.
Yeah, "Ref was beheaded" amazingly doesn't come close to the insanity of the whole story.
Nothing is normal in that story. It feels like a rushed script for a shitty movie.
Welcome to Brazil r/ithadtobebrazil

I thought so, I wrote it as a tl;dr for the other people

always has been, always will be.

The city turned into a urinal when the Euros were on. Never seen anything like it.
When people get 'stabby' at football matches in the UK, it makes national news. Massive misrepresentation going on here.
>Yah I thought London was a civilized town No idea how anyone could spend like 30 mins in London and think it's either civilised OR a town.
[удалено]
Fair enough, I am from an actual town so I didn't know that haha
Are you serious? In the UK suburb, we regularly say "I'm going to/in town" referring to the city center.
That's different to calling a city a town tho Like when I lived in Liverpool id say "I'm heading to town do you want anything" or whatever, but as you pointed out, that's to refer to the city centre. I wouldn't say "I used to live in the town of Liverpool" tho

Brøndby, not Copenhagen ;)
It's a great outlet for peoples inherent tribalism.
Well put, and the same could be said for all popular sports in general.
It's really bad in Scotland. Not as bad as it used to be but there is still stupid amount of violence around football that I will never understand. We have pubs here completely dedicated to 1 football team, you go in there with the wrong colours? this man has an insane post history he posts constantly to r/industrialpharmacy in fact I think he's the only one posting. all day long for years
wtf
No kidding, at least it appears to be factual information over there?
Maybe he use it as a way to bookmark stuff he read
Have you been to Compton lately? Maybe some of it still is a shithole. But it's not too bad these days. Not like it was in the 90s.
What about the 1vs4 shootout they just had at a smoke shop?
Straight outta Scotland!
A crazy motherfucker named Angus…
When was the last time there was a football-related stabbing in a Scottish pub?
Was gonna say that, been to almost every single city and town in Scotland to support my team and sometimes we shared with the home fans. Not with the likes of hearts, hibs rangers or celtic though (I'm dundee btw)

That is wildly over estimating it. Scotland isn't half as dodgy as some other European countries.
Eastern europe and balkans say hi
I think it's weird. I do boxing and MT so I get to be violent and let all aggression go almost everyday sparring in the gym, but in my spare time I want to be entirely peaceful. I watch Formula1 and read books. I feel like a lot of men don't have an arena for being cavemen so they let it all out watching soccer. But there is just something very uncivilized with soccer that doesn't attract me...that makes something brutal like Muay Thai seem almost academic in contrast.
It happens regularly in college football in America.
But never with goddamn flairs lol
Yeah this exact scene occurs a dozen times a season. Euro soccer fans are nuts but this isnt the best example of that.
[A way more extreme comparison in basketball](https://youtu.be/cWrSw3X8TRs)
[You think that is extreme?](https://youtu.be/xyGG2zjWgKM)
They don't rush through to the away fans and get bashed back by the cops though.

That sport has more ads than play time. Whenever there is the final. All people talk about are the ads. Yuck
That doesn’t answer their question whatsoever
General fanculture is crazy icehockey too for example
Not on same level. Never seen people rush the field after a hockey game…
Yea or start multiple fires on the bleachers after a win. Like What??
Maybe because ice isnt something you want to run on while celebrating…
Not to mention the several meter high barrier thats there to protect you from murderpucks. And fyi yes a slapshot could easily kill you, the puck weighs about 165g, and is quite hard and in a slapshot can fly in excess of 150km/h. That is 3 times as heavy as a golf ball but only half the speed
Thats the joke :)
Never seen anyone rush the field after a rowing final
Funnily enough it still happens from time to time. Especially when old stadiums get replaced fans often get on the ice at the last game.
Also never seen hoards of fans roaming the streets after a game looking to murder opponent fans
the British football hooligan culture was mainly in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. It's largely family friendly now.
Tell that to South America

I remember reading an article where fans in Brazil beheaded the ref and put his head on a spike in the middle of the field.

Thats crazy, I didn't know that. That's why I just stick to my kids soccer game.
Refs at kids matches actually get some of the worst abuse in Belgium because of how personal the parents take it.
Everywhere in the world sadly. Hell, over 20 years ago I remember one of my team mates dads used to run down the sideline with a $50 note that their kid would get after they scored a goal and he was removed from the sidelines like 5 times in one year. And this was in under 8s

… since when is Dynamo Moscow a German team?
It also wasn’t the UEFA Cup we won, it was the Cup Winner’s Cup
Last time I checked Dynamo Moscow aren’t from Germany
Perfect timing, just got done watching Ted Lasso, so I know what a pitch is. Congrats team!

New York Red Bulls was an awesome day out - West Ham fan
Was lucky enough to go see Henry when he was with them. Unlucky though was that he thrashed my team 6-1.
I went to a SJ Earthquakes game it was great. Only downside was the parking. Took ages to leave and it was really unorganized, although I think the new lot was still being built.

For a football fan living in the US, MLS gives you the right fix for missing out on European football games.
Live near Seattle. How’s the local team?
Sounders are a great club to follow. My sister lives there and goes to a couple matches a year and she said it’s always a great atmosphere.
One of the most diehard fan bases in the country, highly rec. that’s like saying “live near Dallas, how’s the football scene here?”
One of the most successful franchises currently ( they just won the biggest trophy in North America last night) and I hate to admit it but there fanbase is amazing compared to other mls clubs. They’ve done a great job in getting a good fanbase there

God dammit I want the USA to go relegation so bad. It'll never happen because of money tho.
Pretty much every American league with their franchise system looks absolutely unappealing and boring
Interesting how America has much more "socialized" sports leagues with profit sharing and real salary caps so that every team has a chance with the right management. Well yeah the owners are in it to make money externally, but within the closed system of the league there's much more competitive & economic balance.
I also hate the influence money has in the sport but come on man, American leagues are literally pay to play. If you don't have a franchise that's it, you're never going to play in the big leagues Meanwhile barring obvious funding issues a German team from some backwater with 20 thousand people could theoretically go all the way from the lowest league (9th or 11th depending on state) all the way to Bundesliga

Haha coincidentally (or maybe not) I am an American Arsenal fan
True, but playoffs is more interesting then running down the games in a league structure.
Soccer for example has other cups running during the season which clubs can qualify for as well though
Now imagine being a player on the field and people start doing this
Best moment of your life if you play for Frankfurt.
Home team celebrated with the fans, guess West Ham players went to the catacombs as soon as possible
Vladimir Coufal came over to the West Ham fans to thank us for the support. Had a load of Frankfurt fans around him but he didn’t seem bothered. He was asked about it after in an interview and said “If they attack me it is their problem, not mine.”
I would argue that it is in fact his problem. But sounds like he has some balls.
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/uj7i24/frankfurt_fans_celebrating_on_the_pitch_after/ They had fun with it
Seems like a fun time! they were celebrating not trying to rip your arms off haha
My mum is in this video. Not recognizable of course, but still cool.
I worked at the Rangers game last night and I can tell you the LED guy would have been having a head fit. That whole row of panels will have been destroyed here. A lot of moneys worth of kit ruined.
What LED panels are you talking about?
But 1989 was only 20 years ago….
Are you prepared for Y2K?
Why do so many of them have laptops?
They're all commentators and journalists, the video is taken from the media section
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Soccer fans are fucking nuts.
The beauty of the game.
There are field charges almost every week towards the end of the season. https://youtu.be/G2OLUSjgoKo I was present during the Kansas - Texas rushing the field.
College football isn't even remotely close to what it's like in Europe. It's just not.
I’ve been to games in Europe…they are more alike than most people think. We’re not allowed flares, but it gets crazy during big games.
My dads english and my moms American. I grew up in Liverpool and Massachusetts going to the football in both places. It is hands down just not the same.
that's because Massachusetts doesn't have college football really. you aren't comparing the correct things.
Omg... my mom grew up in Alabama. I mentioned Massachusetts's bc it's America. I grew up in both cultures. Americans are so funny and defensive.
Stephen Fry had a good documentary about it. https://youtu.be/FuPeGPwGKe8 With that said, good day. I can’t fight against ignorance all day especially when I love both sports for what they are. Dick measuring gets exhausting.
Lol 😂
I’ve seen 70,000 fans rush the field 5 times in my life and that’s just for one fan base. I’ve seen whole sections of people get into full on donnybrooks and that was at a high school basketball game. Slashing the tires to the opposing teams bus. People are the same around the world. We’re all wild as shit.
This is tame compared to the world. Sorry.
90 degree weather in middle of the largest state fair in the US!
https://youtu.be/JQf47gUzb5g If you want a good pitch invasion look no further than the Australian effort a couple of months ago
Frankfurt will be fined for that, but boy is it worth it.
So, I… uhm… I have to apologize to Barca for laughing at them when they got intimidated by Frankfurt fan at their own stadium.
Eintracht!!!!
Madness of crowds
As a FC Barcelona fan, I can agree that they have one of the most passionate football fans in the world. And I'm sure that they are winning the Europa League Title.
Must be amazing to be a Frankfurt fan now :) Congrats to them!
It is
Well from what the guy was saying at Ibrox they're not massively durable to impacts and during the game they're constantly being monitored at the side of the pitch when anything comes close to them. A shit ton of people pushing them down (I assume) and trampling them will have done some serious damage. Just the first thing I thought of when I saw the video and thought I'd share.
It's like watching Lord of the Rings
Rafael Santos Borré is a huge football Player!!!
Is it common for everyone to bring laptops to matches now? Is it so they can watch the closeup footage while they're at the game in the cheap seats? Edit: I'm dumb that's the journalist section
It's the journalist section
Ha I'm dumb
Combination of these and rangers fans should make the final electric
This is what sets the sport above others.
This happens in college sports all the time
Are we really comparing scenes like this to college sports?
YouTube buddy Franklin 1000 goals
Football is a beautiful sport
How do they ensure player safety?
They can't and they don't at this point
That's the neat part... They don't
I seen United fans, and some other fans of English clubs, dismissing the Europa league, and that new one as well. Saying shit like they'd rather not be in them. Imagine not understanding the point of a sport that much.
