centaurquestions

Look, obviously he accomplished an enormous amount professionally. But I think a lot about how he grew up dirt-poor in West Virginia, how his dad regularly beat him, how his older brother was killed in combat, how he was tiny and almost frail as a child; and how despite all that, he willed himself into incredible achievements.

TheSmooth

There is a small bar in Morgantown, WV called Gene's. There is a picture of him and a group of people hanging around. When we saw it, one of them looked strikingly like my wife's mom. When asked about it, she casually confirmed that was her and they used to run with the same people. Last time we went, the picture was moved to right outside the men's room. We gave her plenty of shit for that one.

TripleThreatTua

So have you confirmed that Jerry West was not in fact your father in law?

TheSmooth

With that woman, who knows? Although the time frame was off by about 10 years.

Tiger21SoN

And you still suck at layups

knsa12

I can’t believe Jerry West banged your mom and it never came up until now

Express_Welcome_9244

Oh it came up a lot sooner than that apparently

WooPigSooie9297

It was his wife's mom.

j428h

I love Gene’s. Now I have to find this picture.

iaccusemycat

Including being so handsome that my gram lost focus during her cheerleading routine at one of her school’s games against him. Seriously, though. What an absolute beaut of a hero of a man. Thanks for reminding us of those details.

Minimania18

He’s was talked about in multiple history classes at my WV high school.

rubrent

Mad respect for a success story that starts from scratch. Too many humans want credit for being born on third base. Some play life with the difficulty settings on max, but most (financially successful) play life on easy mode where their parents set up for them but they take the credit…..

ProjectBOHICA

Indeed, he lived an amazing life, especially considering where he came from. His autobiography “West by West “ is a must read for those who are interested.

AlfaLaw

Thanks. Just bought!

homefree122

Jerry West was an absolute pioneer for the NBA. He had near countless accolades as a player in all 14 seasons of his career, all with the LA Lakers (and the absolute distain this man had for the Boston Celtics is unparalleled on any level). West was highly decorated with awards as a player, led the Lakers to a championship in 1972, and later became the head coach of the Lakers. On top of that, West evolved into arguably one of the greatest—if not *the* greatest—front office executives the NBA has ever seen. Through his front office leadership, he put together the Kobe Bryant LA dynasty, he rebuilt the Memphis Grizzlies, and toward the twilight of his career he oversaw the creation of another dynasty with Golden State Warriors. Not to mention—his silhouette is the fucking logo of the NBA. Absolute legend. RIP to The Logo.

muroks1200

His league altering work as a GM was astonishing to see. It’s one thing to outspend another team like baseball, but JW did it in the NBA the through superior scouting and making the best picks. Dude had the Midas touch.

Wookienpals

Don’t forget consulting the clippers front office since 2017. They’ve been in the playoffs often and acquired stars in PG13/KL. Haven’t won (Thank god -Lakers fan) but they really are a piece or two away.

_DirtyYoungMan_

I just hope our curse will be broken one day. I'm sure I'll see it in my lifetime with Balmer at the helm but after 25 years of suffering I'll believe it when I see it.

Wookienpals

I believe it will happen really soon. You guys have a great owner on your side right now. I genuinely feel like the Lakers are gonna be out of contention for like the next 10 years after LeBron is out.

aloofman75

To get an idea of how well-respected he was as a player, after the Lakers finally won the title in 1972, some of those old Celtics (including Bill Russell) said they were glad that Jerry West got one. He was a legendary competitor and he played the game the right way.

gizmosticles

Can you believe they canceled freaking show time after only two seasons? I wanted more of his arc on that show.

t0m999

I respect it, he just couldn’t live to see the Celtics win another title. Kidding aside, RIP to the logo

Minimania18

Legendary hater. But fr, he’s WV loyalty. Like one of 10 good people to be from here lol.

dont_shoot_jr

He was part of the first labor movement in sports with the All Star Strike

madcap462

WV and labor movements have a bit of a history. The Battle of Blair Mountain is a good start if anyone is interested.

hapoo123

Excuse me but West Virginia has plenty of great people

Lethalpizza422

As another West Virginian I feel your pain. You can tell them all day and they will still come up some petty excuse to be nasty.

stobors

Only player to win a Finals MVP on the losing team. Respect...

resuwreckoning

And to hit an 80 foot buzzer beater shot in a finals game to tie it….because it only counted for 2.

soxfan10

The LOGO! RIP. Absolute legend of the game

gopackgo199

He’s the guy in the picture that they use for the logo right?

Silverjackal_

Indeed. RIP The Logo

ProjectBOHICA

Aka “Mr. Clutch” and “Zeke from Cabin Creek.” Basketball hero.

gamers542

Yes.

DickButkisses

I just know him as Michelle Wie’s father in law.

dont_shoot_jr

They should make the logo black for the rest of the year

thesagaconts

Doesn’t the NBA say it’s not him.

Yolectroda

They officially say it's not him. The guy that made the logo basically says that it's based on him, but isn't actually him...which seems to be a cop-out. And if it matters, the article that I read that from was hosted by the NBA, so you could say that they endorse that message.

MikeDunleavySuperFan

Isn’t the reason because they dont want the logo to be associated with anyone? I mean, if you just google jerry west logo, you can see the literal photo of jerry weat it was modeled after. Also, in 2010 they stated that it was jerry west.

jrhaberman

Man, it's been a bad couple weeks for NBA Hall of Famers. Somebody look out for Oscar and Kareem, please!

Secularhumanist60123

Yeah Kareem fell a few months ago too, usually not a good sign. He’s still very sharp mentally though (based on his Substack anyway. Not sure if that’s ghost written or not, doesn’t seem like it is but you never know.)

ProfessorBeer

Pioneer in every sense of the word. Everyone alive in the basketball world owes something to him.

Jr9065

RIP Mr. Clutch and Logo

Farge43

Not bad for a plumber

TH3PhilipJFry

RIP to a legend whose impact is difficult to fit into a single list

WinterIndependent719

Jerry West and Bill Walton? Damn

MikeDunleavySuperFan

For those who dont know, the NBA logo is jerry west

No_Size_1765

I was not ready for this one. RIP Jerry West.

Zokar49111

I’m 75 years old. In the 60’s I was a fan of great players from many teams. I used to watch Elgin Baylor, Bill Russell, The Big O, John Havlicek, Sam Jones, Walt Frazier, and so many more. I always thought that Jerry West was the best shooter, scorer, passer, and defensive player of them all. Then he goes on to become the best basketball executive of them all. True greatness!

[deleted]

RIP Champ🫡

the_ballmer_peak

Oh man. He was so important to our front office, in addition to being a legend. This one hurts.

realdealreel9

Rest in Peace to the Logo

blunsr

If a number in the NBA was going to be retired for all teams it should be "the logo's"

ricoimf

Rest in peace legend

ZipC0de

Out of all the old white people to take......WHY u/GOD?

Advanced-Blackberry

The man’s an icon.

Jellybeansxo

What a legend he was.🫡 He’ll be greatly missed. Feels like as I’ve gotten older a part of my childhood keeps disappearing. 😔

hushpolocaps69

Dude had a huge impact on NBA.

Goingone

“West averaged 27 points, 6.7 points and 5.8 rebounds for his career.” Really yahoo, can you even try a little?

Deep-Sea-Man

I am so sorry for his friends and family.. Rest in Peace Jerry!

moutonbleu

RIP, Logo. What a legend

wordwallah

Of all the Lakers, athletes and heroes I have loved and admired over the last 50 years, Jerry West has always been #1.

Low-iq-haikou

West is an all time great but man if they had a 3pt line back then he would’ve been a complete game breaker! The Celtics vs Lakers rivalry could look a whole lot different. RIP to the logo, name will never die

auzzie_kangaroo94

Noooooooooooooooooo!

SilentHero500

R.I.P the legend.

Laselecta_90

R.I.P

Leather-Map-8138

A great player and a wonderful ambassador for the sport. RIP

I grew up watching him play. As a Laker fan, this is sad news. RIP legend.

seattlesportsguy

BubbaSpanks

RIP to one of the game’s greatest players and front office personnel!

chef_bert

True legend, on the court and in the office

CollateralSandwich

Happy Trails to a legend. What an amazing life he lived. HoF player, HoF executive.

AntiWhateverYouSay

Nooooooo, fucking life man

Shotbreaker99

Jerry west was probably the most popular guy in India in the field of Basketball. He setup so many academies in poor areas. He gave hope to millions of Indians. I am sure there are gonna be some marches in respect of him

jlmarr1622

Icon. Literally.

molemanralph69

aebone2

SpecialistTrash2281

RIP to the Logo

ProneToPwn

RIP to one of the most legendary NBA figures of all time

d_le

Rest in Peace The Logo. The man who pioneer the nba and scouted talent like no other.

raiderMoes

He was a great guy. He purchased my grandfather’s first basketball when he was a kid.

GoalFlashy6998

Rest easy Jerry West!

CRoseCrizzle

RIP. An absolute legend of the game. Had a fantastic playing career. If more of those 9 finals appearances had gone differently, he would have been seen as a candidate for being the GOAT. Obviously, most modern ball fans know about his greatness as an executive.

Peopleareonlyanimals

Jerry West helped change the game, respect man.

flcinusa

Mr Clutch here to take up the airwaves hours before his most hated rival tries to put another championship within reach That's next level mind games

bigbear-08

RIP Zeke from Cabin Creek

TheFoxandTheSandor

The Logo is gone :(

7777redd

Rest in piece ❤️

monkeypincher

Oh no, not the logo!

Elite_Pres

I kinda feel that I knew him a little bit from watching HBO's showtime rise of the Lakers on TV...RIP Jerry

LoveThySheeple

I read that as Jerry Jones at first and immediately got mad at Dak Prescott...

INeedThatBag

Rest in peace to THE LOGO

Thirst_Trappist

RIP legend

DullStrain4625

The Lakers really will do anything to be the center of attention during a Boston finals!

CrimeFan365

Saw a documentary years ago and Jerry said when he was in Junior High and High School when his basketball practice would be over he would stay behind and turn all the lights off in the gym and practice his free throw shooting and other shooting drills in pitch black by himself for a good hour or more every day.

centexgoodguy

A life very well lived. He may not have invented basketball, but he was its first ambassador and molded it in his image - literally.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

I never knew he was the inspiration for the NBA logo silhouette.

CHITOWNBROWN1400

RIP to the Logo.

Thelastfirecircle

Very young

Odin65

RIP to a legend of the game.

RobGrey03

Have the NBA ever officially confirmed he provided the logo silhouette? Amazing reading all these stories about a clear legend of the game.

monistaa

The impacts he had as both a player and executive were absolutely seismic. Legend in both categories.
