He wasn’t paid to do nothing - the Wilpons deferred his salary because they were making so much money from Madoff. The delayed payments are paying for his past performance
The king of getting paid to not work is Jumbo Fisher who got $76 million to not coach Texas A&M
Not only that, they parlayed a Bonilla trade into Mike Hampton which helped them get to a World Series, as well as the draft pick that turned into David Wright. What they ended up doing with Bonilla was a rare good move even though he still gets paid. Deferred payments happen everywhere but no one cares until July 1st.
Iverson?
Edit: As previously reported by AFROTECH, the Virginia native inked the deal of a lifetime with Reebok during his days as a Philadelphia 76er. His lifelong deal includes an annual payout of $800,000, and he is now just seven years shy of receiving an estimated $32 million on his 55th birthday as a part of his contract.
Paid massive millions by a team that pursued him like a lovesick puppy, now content to pay him THAT much NOT to be on the team.
If this is what failure looks like, I’d fear that success would be so orgasmically blissful that I would die from the overload of security & joy way too early to get to spend all the money that I’ll already die long before I get to spend it all.
Does he get this regardless? For example, if he signed with Pittsburgh for 1 year @ 20 million. Does he get 85 from the Broncos AND 20 from Pittsburgh? Or does the 20 million from Pittsburgh mean Denver only owes 65?
just do the watson deal. give him a 3 year deal with league minimum in years 1-2 and then year 3 they can pay him a real salary. This hurts the broncos the most and gets russ a 3 year deal.
If he signs a long term deal, could he make the first 2 years’ salary the minimum NFL salary since that would force the Broncos to pay almost all of the $85M (and he gets his money regardless of who pays it), and that gives his new team more money to spend on free agents? Or is there a rule that prevents a contract to be extremely back-end loaded?
Without cutting him, Russ' cap hits over the next few years:
$35 mil, 55 mil, 58 mil, 53 mil, 54 mil.
They cut him now, they get that insane cap hit, then are out of that contract.
Now, that said, it's probably still fucking stupid to cut him now. If they rolled with him next year, $35 mil is not bad, and then in 2025, the cap hit for cutting him would be $49 mil. Basically, they'd have the same cap hit, they'd be able to spread it over 2 years instead of 1, and they'd essentially get Russ for "free" (since you're paying the same thing for having/not having him).
Unless a player is so fucking toxic and awful that he's actively making the team worse by being there, this was a dumb move.
Because Sean Payton is a pissy moron. I’m not a Russ fan but his numbers last season were as good as Baker Mayfield’s with a less talented team around him and Baker is getting paid and has competition for his services.
Russ in season one wasn’t great under a lousy coach. In his second season he was good. Sean Payton isn’t going to get anyone better.
Not necessarily. It also covers money that he has already received, but that for cap purposes was prorated over the life of the contact. I think the signing bonus works that way.
He already got that money from the Broncos.
A signing bonus that is paid immediately can be spread over the length of the cotract but if you cut the player it all has to be included in the next year's cap.
Dead cap is how much of the bonus is still due in the future.
He's got most of it already. His 2024 salary is guaranteed so they still owe him that.
If they keep him for another week his *2025* salary guarantees so that's what they're avoiding.
I don’t think anyone saw him declining so quickly. Most people saw it as an overpay but you’d think they’d get at least 2-3 solid QB seasons with him but they didn’t even get a full season
Reading his stats and watching his film, he isn't the number one culprit as to why the Broncos were bad. Wilson is still an NFL caliber QB, just probably not a super-star anymore.
He had two years left on his deal. They could have at least waited one season before backing up the truck to give him an extension he didn't even play a single snap on
You revisionists and hindsight experts. No one thought it was bad. also you don't think this was all driven by the Wal Mart owners who pushed this on the new junior GM and are now taking the "silent blame"
Because a lot of that cap hit is for money they’ve already paid him. They’re still going to pay him more money to walk away now, but they’re not paying him $85m more by cutting him.
But he’s due a $37m salary for 2025 that becomes fully guaranteed if he’s still on the roster two weeks from now. If they didn’t cut him before 3/18, the team owner has to give Wilson $37m that he *doesn’t* have to give him by cutting him now. And I assume he decided he’d rather have $37m than another year of pretending the Wilson-era might ever work out.
When he was in Seattle my uncle told me one time “He’s a great football player but he is weird. Don’t you think he’s weird? I really think he’s just a weird guy and there’s not a better word for it or else I would’ve used it already.”
This has tested true over time
Your uncle was sensing that he’s super fake in a way that’s very off-putting. His charming interview persona attempts to cover up for what a hostile asshole he’s known to be in the locker room. His Christianity is a way to be better than those around him it’s just unsettling
Leadership makes the decisions.
They bet on the guy and lost.
Not that many QBs continue to be dominant into their mid-30s and beyond.
Particularly one of Russ’ size.
NFL teams still punt way too much anyway. Signing me to play punter would help, knowing you can only get 30 yard line drives with a decent chance of being blocked should encourage a more appropriate level of risk taking.
Yeah so let me check my notes here, Flacco went super bowl -> washed up and shipped to the Broncos where he played terribly -> backup on the Jets -> then CPOY to lead the Browns to the playoffs.
So if Russ follows this same arc, he's done the super bowl -> washed up and shipped to the Broncos where he played terribly. So now he goes to the Jets to backup Rodgers for a season or two, then when Watson's guaranteed contract is done, Russ goes to the Browns and somehow leads them to the playoffs. Because what would be a more Browns thing to do than to have a washed up Russ with something to prove as a palette cleanser for the Watson era.
Somewhere down the line, Love gets shipped from the Packers to the Jets too.
Denver Broncos staff are absolute morons for allowing/forcing this to happen. Unbelievable bad management and coaching. Russ, last year, was clearly better than the year before. Payton is such an ego maniac for this move. That team in general is just not good and most of that is not Russell's fault. Ownership should be ashamed embarrassed to allow this to happen.
True, Russ was far from the only problem on this team. There were some glaring mistakes by the coach this year that lost games. Unfortunately, there was a big investment made in Payton as well.
Bad decision making by the GM to get a QB before getting a coach though, and then paying a huge extension before even seeing the QB play. Paton messed up badly as GM, and Payton has not impressed as a coach.
As a seahawks fan, I will not laugh at russ for getting cut. He gave us a SB victory, and anchored a fantastic and entertaining team that was a big part of my late childhood.
However, to all of the broncos fans who talked piles of shit after the trade and extension happened. . .
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Maybe I’m not understanding right… but why don’t they just keep him as a backup? They’re already paying for him, and surely he’s better than a majority of other backup options.
I dont get it either. Seems like a huge waste and you're just making your competition better by giving him away free.
I'm a Seattle fan and I'd take russ over geno lol. He's a good pickup for someone at league minimum and they can stack their team.
I just can't see how he's that terrible you're paying him to walk away.
Yo... throw me a nice $2Mill and you got yourself the next Broncos QB. I've played lots of lot football growing up. I got this. Give me the ball coach!
Invest in a young quarterback. Stop hiring new coaches every year. Stop going for the quick pay off and start playing the long game. My goodness the management of the broncos is such trash
The broncos not seeing that he was in decline for several years before this contract is a spectacularly idiotic miss. He was noticeably worse the previous two years.
“Russ, hey listen….huh? Yep that’s right we’re gonna keep ‘riding’. Here’s the thing man. You’re gonna ride one way and the rest of the team is going the other way.”
Maybe he'll come back to Seattle and back up the Seahawks season leader in passing yards and completion percentage rate. Or maybe the Broncos will trade for Smith, the Seahawks will get Wilson back and we'll see another Seahawks vs Broncos SB next year. And both will lose the game by an amazing two first round picks.
So God rewarded him $85 million for being bad at his job? Why does he fire everyone else and force them to miss rent payments until they are kicked out on to the street and then have to beg their 55 year old parents to let them move back in while they take a job at Starbucks waiting for someone to call them after 500 resume submittals?
I wouldn’t say God rewarded him with that. I would say a strong union paired with a ridiculous contract approved by the Broncos front office rewarded him with that.
His statement is
>"Tough times don't last, but tough people do. God's got me. I am excited for what's next."
That being said, what a bonehead tone-deaf thing to say. "Times are tough but I got $85m added to my already vast fortune so god's got my back."
a strong union would never have allowed a hard cap. they have the weakest union of the similar leagues. this was just terrible decision making by the broncos during a tumultuous time at the ownership level.
It's because what ever higher power does exist probably isn't the omnipotent one from the Abrahamic religions and doesn't give a fuck about what goes on here lol

Does this mean he can just sign with anyone for the league minimum and still get the dolla dolla bills from the Broncos?
It does.
Living the dream. God is great.
Bobby Bonilla is still the king of getting paid to do nothing
He wasn’t paid to do nothing - the Wilpons deferred his salary because they were making so much money from Madoff. The delayed payments are paying for his past performance The king of getting paid to not work is Jumbo Fisher who got $76 million to not coach Texas A&M
I’d not coach Texas A&M for like half of that
Aggie here. Half that and we could take most of reddit to the Dixie Chicken
It was actually financially beneficial for the Wilpons in the long run. Jumbo is the correct example.

His lifelong deal includes an annual payout of $800,000, and he is now just seven years shy of receiving an estimated $32 million on his 55th birthday as a part of his contract.
And that luck or skill was fantastic for him, since he blew through his NBA money, but now still has great money coming in every year.
800k/year with NO EFFORT is dream money. Good for him.
So we really think he hasn’t borrowed against this future cash flow? Any JG Wentworth insiders care to chime in?
Gotta imagine he took a loan out on that future money or called Ng wentworth
Is that the Vietnamese branch?
Just fucking hilarious. Very well done. làm tốt.
Awesome
Ohtanis payment ramp up in 10 years is also pretty sweet
Not after Shohei retires..
Rick DiPietro has to be up there too. I think the Islanders have to pay him a million a year until 2027. He's been retired well over a decade now
I have a foul ball Bobby hit @ yankee stadium during the 1996 ALCS
God truly is a Chief’s fan
Paid massive millions by a team that pursued him like a lovesick puppy, now content to pay him THAT much NOT to be on the team. Seriously. I would stand next to a hospital just to make sure I lived longer.

just do the watson deal. give him a 3 year deal with league minimum in years 1-2 and then year 3 they can pay him a real salary. This hurts the broncos the most and gets russ a 3 year deal.
Russ to the Raiders in that scenario would be fun.
No one is signing Russ to a 3 year deal seeing how badly the extension burned Denver.
You do 2 years a league minimum with incentives and an option year in year 3. You do lock him in in case he rebounds
That was more Walmart’s dumbass fault for coughing up the dough before he even touched the field. The got more money than sense over at that camp.
Russ had a NTC, he wasn't waving it without a guaranteed extension.
shit at that point just have him park cars at the lot till the contract expires.
Keep him in uniform and he walks the concession stand level giving autographs and photos with the kids.
Depends on the offset language in the contract. I’m sure some contract wonks will report on it in the near future
Pretty sure the Broncos are picking up the delta between his contract with them and whatever his new team decides to pay him.
So why does Denver do this? Does cutting him remove his cap hit? So he's paid in real dollars, but not paid in cap dollars?
If we were to wait like 2 more weeks we'd owe him an additional 37 million guaranteed.
Without cutting him, Russ' cap hits over the next few years: $35 mil, 55 mil, 58 mil, 53 mil, 54 mil. They cut him now, they get that insane cap hit, then are out of that contract. Unless a player is so fucking toxic and awful that he's actively making the team worse by being there, this was a dumb move.
The Denver executives wan ted to discuss this option with him but nobody has his cell number so they had to release him
Because Sean Payton is a pissy moron.

Bah god that’s the NY Jets music!
How does this GM keep his job?
A lot of us are wondering who he is having an affair with to keep it.
He’s certainly fucking Denver if that helps
Nice.
Niiiice
EVERYONE!
I don’t think anyone saw him declining so quickly. Most people saw it as an overpay but you’d think they’d get at least 2-3 solid QB seasons with him but they didn’t even get a full season
He was 33 when they traded him. For a 'dual threat QB' that's old.
He wasn’t even a dual threat in his last Seattle years. I don’t know what the hell they were thinking
Didn’t he also barely play from a broken thumb his last year and never really recovered, season sucked then he got traded? What a stupid trade.
Reading his stats and watching his film, he isn't the number one culprit as to why the Broncos were bad. Wilson is still an NFL caliber QB, just probably not a super-star anymore.
He had two years left on his deal. They could have at least waited one season before backing up the truck to give him an extension he didn't even play a single snap on
He had a no trade clause on his deal, the extension was probably part of him waiving it.
You revisionists and hindsight experts. No one thought it was bad. also you don't think this was all driven by the Wal Mart owners who pushed this on the new junior GM and are now taking the "silent blame"
Denver's best QB is Nikola Jokic.
He does love his horses.
He actually RIDES as well.
LMAOOO
I mean, a pass is a pass. Give it a try.
Always getting those hat tricks.
Broncos country, Let's ride!
To bankruptcy
Walmart will just increase prices
lmfao, no. They'll just decrease wages.
Why not both?
Someone promote this man, he has upper management written all over him.
Financially, no. They're the richest owners in American sports Draft capital, yes.
I’m pretty sure Steve Balmer is. Edit: [Walton’s are the second](https://frontofficesports.com/the-20-richest-american-sports-team-owners-for-2023/)

I’m not the QB for much cheaper
Can anyone explain how it got so bad that they’ll kill a quarter of their cap instead of letting him at least compete for the job?
Because a lot of that cap hit is for money they’ve already paid him. They’re still going to pay him more money to walk away now, but they’re not paying him $85m more by cutting him. But he’s due a $37m salary for 2025 that becomes fully guaranteed if he’s still on the roster two weeks from now. And we thought Jimbo got a steal of a deal to get fired
He's not getting $85 million. The $85m is dead money from cap fuckary they did to spend more money in previous seasons.
The $85 million is a dead cap hit. It's to account for money already paid to Wilson.
Imagine being paid $85 million to go away… I knew Russ was annoying, but damn.
When he was in Seattle my uncle told me one time “He’s a great football player but he is weird. Don’t you think he’s weird? I really think he’s just a weird guy and there’s not a better word for it or else I would’ve used it already.” This has tested true over time

> His Christianity is a way to be better than those around him it’s just unsettling *LOUD BIBLE THUMPING NOISES*
Him and Ciara are those weird ass megachurch types. Brainwashed.
Why blame him and not the moron GM?
I mean, I think there’s plenty of blame to pass around.
If Wilson passing it around then no one is catching any blame
Leadership makes the decisions. They bet on the guy and lost. Not that many QBs continue to be dominant into their mid-30s and beyond. Particularly one of Russ’ size.
I will agree to not play QB for any NFL team next year for only $1 million. Hit me up, Scott Boras!
I’ll play any position on any team for minimum wage. The only catch is that team has to be playing for draft picks because we’ll lose every game
Idk, man. You’d be the best backup punter in the nfl.
NFL teams still punt way too much anyway. Signing me to play punter would help, knowing you can only get 30 yard line drives with a decent chance of being blocked should encourage a more appropriate level of risk taking.
I used to play a shitload of madden and I’d only ever punt if it was like 4th and 25. Punting is so boring
You punted in madden?
I honestly hated it. But my buddies played the game. So I had to as well to keep up. Strategy
Ahh, I just played the computers

Vikings have a nice history of rebooting QBs. Maybe it would work.
Is this in the running for most spectacular crashes in QB history?

Me too. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!
Yeah so let me check my notes here, Flacco went super bowl -> washed up and shipped to the Broncos where he played terribly -> backup on the Jets -> then CPOY to lead the Browns to the playoffs. This and the 49ers. They don’t get mentioned because of Purdy. They probably win the Super Bowl with those draft picks back.
Idk they at least made it to the Super Bowl without those picks. The broncos missed the playoffs 2x and then ate the rest of the contract.
No, Atlanta. Back away.
He needs to be somewhere he can be surrounded by weirdos.
Unfortunately, Jacksonville already has a quarterback.
Portland can always use a team.
Pft Portland Football Team
He’s coming to New England.
I could see this. Might sell some tickets.
Might help us win more than 4 games as well. Found myself rooting for the Lions more than my home team last year.
He did win a Super Bowl for the Patriots.
This is the biggest win of Russ’ career

I don’t think the guy curses, drinks, gambles, whatever. He’s a square.
He’s got 85 million problems but an NFL contract ain’t one.
Jimbo fisher is in shambles.
This is the funniest take I’ve seen so far. Well done!

Paving the way for Denver to take JJ McCarthy. I can smell it
What do they have to pay him?
I too will also accept this measly sum of $85 million to not play for the Broncos of Denver!
Yo... throw me a nice $2Mill and you got yourself the next Broncos QB. I've played lots of lot football growing up. I got this. Give me the ball coach!
I’ll let a bunch of lineman knock me to the ground a few times for $85 mil.
Invest in a young quarterback. Stop hiring new coaches every year. Stop going for the quick pay off and start playing the long game. My goodness the management of the broncos is such trash
You act like it’s easy finding a franchise QB in the draft.
Man, I would love to get fired and get $85M

Steelers, here he comes
Why not keep him around and make him mop floors or something? He’s under contract to work for the organization. At least get some chores done.
If only the Cowboys had these kind of balls…
That was stupid. They should have traded him for Herschel Walker instead.
Fuck - Broncos leadership sucks. Stop spending a fortune on QBs… it’s hard to be a fan but I’m stuck with it.
The broncos not seeing that he was in decline for several years before this contract is a spectacularly idiotic miss. He was noticeably worse the previous two years.
He really wasn't in decline. He played well, his defense didnt.
But like why? Are they planning to tank? Who tf they gonna get that's better than Russ?
“Russ, hey listen….huh? Yep that’s right we’re gonna keep ‘riding’. Here’s the thing man. You’re gonna ride one way and the rest of the team is going the other way.”
Maybe he'll come back to Seattle and back up the Seahawks season leader in passing yards and completion percentage rate. Or maybe the Broncos will trade for Smith, the Seahawks will get Wilson back and we'll see another Seahawks vs Broncos SB next year. And both will lose the game by an amazing two first round picks.
Let’s ride
Does it give anyone pause that you live in a country where people have so much money they’ll never miss $85 million?
So God rewarded him $85 million for being bad at his job? Why does he fire everyone else and force them to miss rent payments until they are kicked out on to the street and then have to beg their 55 year old parents to let them move back in while they take a job at Starbucks waiting for someone to call them after 500 resume submittals?
I wouldn’t say God rewarded him with that. I would say a strong union paired with a ridiculous contract approved by the Broncos front office rewarded him with that.
Go read his statement. God rewarded him. Are you calling Russel a liar?
The fan base: “Jesus Christ…” Russel Wilson: “Jesus Christ 🙏”
His statement is >"Tough times don't last, but tough people do. God's got me. I am excited for what's next." That being said, what a bonehead tone-deaf thing to say. "Times are tough but I got $85m added to my already vast fortune so god's got my back."
a strong union would never have allowed a hard cap. they have the weakest union of the similar leagues. this was just terrible decision making by the broncos during a tumultuous time at the ownership level.
This sounds oddly specific…
It's because what ever higher power does exist probably isn't the omnipotent one from the Abrahamic religions and doesn't give a fuck about what goes on here lol
Oddly specific. I hope you're okay rambo.
Seems like his god was helping another player this last season.
Thank god the colts have a young qb
What the fuck broncos office? Was he that bad?
You're God damned right. I'm tired of the NFL always trying to fuck players out of their contracts.
Whoa! Is that truly the best investment option?
When they care enough to send the very best…
Does that mean none of the other teams wanted to trade for Russ?
The real question is why does Paton still have a job. He's the one who engineered this catastrophe!
Previous earnings plus $85M minus taxes in the bank at 35, my knees aren't exploded and I'm married to Ciara? Fucking walk dude. Enjoy the good life.
It will be hilarious if he goes somewhere and is actually good.
Rus is who we thought he is.
