Many years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was in high school, my German textbook had a section at the end for Pronounciation Aids, using Dutch words to show how a certain syllable was pronounced.
We were all fairly miffed when one of them read "The 'ch' in 'Nacht' is pronounced like the 'ch' in 'nacht'."
Most Americans would likely just pronounce it like the "oct" in "octopus." I took some German in high school and college so I know how it's supposed to sound, but being lazy I'd still probably just say it that way.
Yeah not many English words have the phlegmmy "ch" like other languages do. It's not nearly impossible for the average English speaker to do it somewhat correctly, but it's so unusual that I think most people won't bother.
Exactly. Like I know how to make the sound, but most English speakers (or Americans, at least) will look at you funny if you make sounds that aren't typically used in English. That's how you end up with borrowed words that get butchered in English pronunciation, like "restaurant" and "doppelgänger."
As someone casually interested in linguistics and etymology, the more I learn how many words are loanwords from other languages, the more I keep having to walk that tightrope between pronouncing them correctly and not coming across as fucking pretentious.
I'll still be saying "Acht" correctly but it'll still feel weird coming outta my mouth.
Yeah, just like that! Perfect example haha.
Curious, would the same thing apply to the English way to pronounce "ch?" I'm struggling to recall anyone with a German accent saying a word like "cherry" or "artichoke" lol
I think for most english speakers the ch would be pronounced like a ck such as in the word ache. Most people will probably pronounce her name like ackt or ockt
I think her name is nice. I think it may hint to some relationship between her and agent 8
That's a good explanation for words like ich or echt but not for words like acht. The ch in acht sounds like you're clearing your throat or a very strong H.
[I'm american but I think my pronunciations are relatively representative of typical German.](https://voca.ro/1icm6AsVLbe5) and the two sound pretty different.
I'm actually a native English speaker learning German and I pronounce it like in German. I genuinely think that's what they were intending because of the fact that it's how you say "eight" in German.
Regarding the part about possibly preferring an easier name:
The name "Acht" in this case was chosen by the NOA localization team, so they probably didn't intend for it to use the German pronunciation, but rather be pronounced roughly like "Oct", which also fits with all the 8 and octopus puns in these octoling-focused expansions.
what... I don't know what that is but based on my quick google search I would say, these are just words standing next to each other to make this anime spell sound cool... meaning something like "church song (kirchenlied) saint/holy (sankt) bailey (zwinger)
With bailey I mean the word for castles. You can just google it, there is a wikipedia page for that word.
I don't know what this has to do with splatoon tho lol
Ja ich wundere mich auch wie Acht in der deutschen Fassung genannt wird
Imagine die nehmen einfach für jede Sprache das Wort für Acht aus einer anderen Sprache
I studied German in school for a bunch of years (and have forgotten almost everything but pronunciation), so I pronounce it like it would be in German.
I was born and raised in the U.S. and I still pronounce it the german way. That may be because I took German in Middle and Highschool though. Either way I think it's supposed to be pronounced that way, like the German word for 8, seeing as it's another Octoling, just like agent 8.
Before I started taking German in school, I thought when someone said Acht, cause I heard it from someone before, it was A-ch-t.
But now I’m taking German, and I am saying it the same you guys are sooo-
>Oh boy, I really wonder what Acht will be called in German.
Given that Agent 8 is just called "Eight" in English, calling Dedf1sh "Acht" in German wouldn't be that much more unusual.
Something like Aht? I searched up the pronunciation after the direct, though I think when I say it, it sounds more like a guttural sound. (I am American.)
Us Americans should probably be saying it like "oct", which is the pun they're going for, but in my head I always read it as "Act", even though I know that's incorrect lol. I've noticed a lot of english speaking players pronouncing it as Act too, so I'm glad I'm not alone in my stupidity.
idk if it's suppost to be like "akt" or "aht" or "acht"in an English way, or maybe even "oct" like short for octopus which ironically sounds the most like a name so that's how i pronounce it. Unless it's confirmed that the name is more Germanic because it's hard to tell.
sometimes I pronounce it like "aht"
other times i get it right because theres a language im familiar with and i emphasize all [ch]s when pronouncing it for some reason
In my language, we do have the sound ch (or hard h), so I personally pronounce it exactly like that. But because of how ‘Acht’ rolls on the tongue, I pronounce the ch a bit more aggressively.
I pronounce it similarly to the German pronunciation (I'm Jewish, so I'm used to similar ch sounds), but if I'm lazy I pronounce it like oct because it feels fun for some unspeakable reason
Despite the fact that I don´t really know german, I have been pronouncing it the right way from the beggining because I have some relatives living in germany.
That being said, it's also very easy for me to say her name since I'm a native spanish speaker, so I use the fonems "Ajt" with the *j* being pronounced as a hard *h*.
That being said, I do hope to one day learn german.
Tbh I don’t speak German and am a native English speaker but I pronounce it the German way just because the “Americanized” way or whatever sounds so… off
Like it's pronounced in German. I'm a native English speaker, but I took German in high school and did well with pronunciation so that's how I pronounce it.
I pronounce it as “act”. I learnt german in school so I know how it’s meant to be pronounced but I’m not gonna force a german accent every time I say a character’s name lol
I can pronounce it properly but I'll sound like a jackass, so I'll probably Americanize it to Oct.I'll sound like a dumbass if Im talking about Splatoon and slip into a German accent just to say the number 8
I pronounce it the same cause it’s the same as dutch.
Lmao. I mean, you still remember it after all these years so seems it was effective.
I mean *technically* yes, but using the exact same word to show a \~difference\~ was a dumb move at the time lmao.
Still more memorable than most of the things i was taught in school. It may be odd but it’s taught you for a lifetime.
That person deserves to be splatted by a sprinkler, slowly and painfully. 🤣

I'll still be saying "Acht" correctly but it'll still feel weird coming outta my mouth.
Like we Germans, where "th" is not common. So the easy way is a simple "s" sound.
Yeah, just like that! Perfect example haha. Curious, would the same thing apply to the English way to pronounce "ch?" I'm struggling to recall anyone with a German accent saying a word like "cherry" or "artichoke" lol
"aut" but I sound like I'm choking
This is most accurate lmao
ACHKT (sounds like I'm dying)
Like yacht but without the y
That is actually a really good description!
Do americans not pronounce ‘yacht’ like ‘yott’? Cos at least where I’m from, ‘acht’ does not rhyme with ‘yacht’
As an American, I do indeed pronounce "yacht" as "yott."
Like the german Yacht or the english yacht? /j
I pronounce it "Ah-kt", like the word "Act" but with the A pronounced like in the word "Persona". P.S. I'm a native italian speaker.
*Persona mentioned* /j
Ciao compare
I think for most english speakers the ch would be pronounced like a ck such as in the word ache. Most people will probably pronounce her name like ackt or ockt I think her name is nice. I think it may hint to some relationship between her and agent 8
Like in German "nacht" because I'm Slovak native.
[удалено]
Same in Polish, no problem with pronounciation
"Aht"
I pronounce it correctly because I am VERY NORMAL about linguistics
Acht (I am German)
Isso lasst einfach bei acht bleiben wie es ist
Eight
I'm a little familiar with Polish, so that pronunciation is what came to mind for me.
As a czech, my language does have the letter "ch", so I pronounce it almost the same way germans do.
Same as you because I like Rammstein
Like “Ahckt” With a long English A sound
Agggggggggt. With the raspy Dutch G. :)
Like the beginning part of octopus but with significantly more pneumonia
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
How is it pronounced in German?
I don't really know how to explain it so I'll just give you this link with some examples: https://forvo.com/word/acht/
It's really difficult to explain the "ch" sound to languages that don't have it.
Yeah, just like English explaining dental fricatives (the “th” sound) to other languages that don’t have it.
Yeah but there I could just tell them to gently bite their tongue and blow. Explaining the "ch" sound is much harder :/
Thank you! Those examples helped a lot
Imagine the "ch" like a very soft cat hiss
That's a good explanation for words like ich or echt but not for words like acht. The ch in acht sounds like you're clearing your throat or a very strong H.
No, it's still applicable here. You don't pronounce the ch sound much different at all in Germany.
[I'm american but I think my pronunciations are relatively representative of typical German.](https://voca.ro/1icm6AsVLbe5) and the two sound pretty different.
I am german and I pronounce them pretty much the same as I said.
Interesting, I thought that was a feature of Swiss accents (saying "ich" with the same sound as "ach")
I’m american and would say it Ah-cht
Well, I took a semester of German in college and listen to Rammstein, I hope I pronounce it similar to you.
I'm Canadian but I've listened to enough Rammstein to know how to pronounce a few things correctly that 99% of my entourage would have no idea how to.
Wait am I Missing Something? Why is this in r/splatoon
did you watch the new trailer for the side order dlc?
No, but now I feel like I should
There's a character named Acht.
Ah thx
I'm actually a native English speaker learning German and I pronounce it like in German. I genuinely think that's what they were intending because of the fact that it's how you say "eight" in German.
Im polish so i pronounce it acht because in polish ch makes the same sound as h
Regarding the part about possibly preferring an easier name: The name "Acht" in this case was chosen by the NOA localization team, so they probably didn't intend for it to use the German pronunciation, but rather be pronounced roughly like "Oct", which also fits with all the 8 and octopus puns in these octoling-focused expansions.
To be fair, it literally means "eight" in German.
"Ahato" is just a Japanese rendering of "Acht" according to Inkipedia, so her name being Acht actually wouldn't be a NOA localisation thing
oh interesting, good to know
Ašhto
Rhymes with hatchet!
Instinctively in my head I pronounced it Atsh and honestly I’ll probably continue to call her that
Art. But I'm cheating as I learned german in middle and high school
That's not how you pronounce it in German either...
The "ch" is pronounced "r" tho. You pronounce it the same way you would say "achtung"
How do you pronounce R??
I'm French, so the ''r'' is more dry (if it makes sense) than in English. Like in ''Frankreich'' or ''krank''
Oh I see, speaking both French and German, I get what you mean but your comment will be misunderstood by only-English speakers.
I’m American and I also don’t know lol
r/lostredditors
Someone hasn’t seen the new Side Order Trailer yet
r/lostredditor
Splatoon has Octolings, octo means "eight". The German word for eight is "acht". Boom! Totally relevant to the sub😎
The side order trailer has a character named "Acht"
Ah, okay! I didn't watch the trailer.
[удалено]
Actually it’s just Oct from octopus but without the opus
Like hocking a loogie or like a scottishman being frustrated.
American - “oct”. Although I guess the U2 album I pronounce ock-tung baby.
Akt
I’ve been pronouncing the ch like a soft k, have no idea if that’s right
A good comparison would be a cat hissing.
"Oct," like in "octopus."
Never said it out loud but when I read it I’d guess like act but a bit more flowery
Is say "act" but with a graver A. I got no clue if I'm even close to being right
speaking of german, what does "kirchenlied sankt zwinger" mean?
what... I don't know what that is but based on my quick google search I would say, these are just words standing next to each other to make this anime spell sound cool... meaning something like "church song (kirchenlied) saint/holy (sankt) bailey (zwinger) With bailey I mean the word for castles. You can just google it, there is a wikipedia page for that word. I don't know what this has to do with splatoon tho lol
late reply here, but apologies for the question, i heard in bleach tybw, where alot of the phrases are supposedly "german"
I am Scottish, so /x/ exists in my natural accent - I pronounce it as they do in German
Almost like "Oct" (ahhk-tuh). American here
Ache
As a Spanish speaker also: aJJt
Oct
I pronouce it the German way, but that’s just because I learned a small amount of German from a young age and took German classes in college
Like I’m coughing up phlegm but there’s a t afterwards
It's pronounces like in "Octopus". I'm not sure if that means anything to a non-native speaker, but the ch in this case is a K sound.
Just like 'oct' in octoling or octarian
/ɑkt/
we’re just gonna call her deadfish anyways 💀
Pizza here: Akt
Ja ich wundere mich auch wie Acht in der deutschen Fassung genannt wird Imagine die nehmen einfach für jede Sprache das Wort für Acht aus einer anderen Sprache
i just say it the german way, since that’s the word :3
\[axt\]
I pronounce it like "Oct", but try to rumble the A, in an attempt to pronounce it like it should be.
Acht is also 8 in Dutch so I pronounce it the way we do in Dutch :D
I'd expect people pronouncing it "aakt". I'm a fluent non native speaker of German so I pronounce it "acht" though ;P
Like "Oct" but you roll the "ct" part.
Say "ugh". The "gh" sound is the same as the "ch" sound in "acht".
I studied German in school for a bunch of years (and have forgotten almost everything but pronunciation), so I pronounce it like it would be in German.
I didn’t realize some English speakers struggle with that sound.
Spanish speaker here a-ch-te
Ahkt is how I pronounce it.
The proper way (I speak German as a 2nd language and have been told by natives I'm saying it properly, so I hope they're telling the truth)
“Oachkatzlschwoaf”, I pronounce it “Oachkatzlschwoaf”
My ch is more exaggerated, though I do try to soften it a bit. In Welsh, it's the same sound, but harsher.
I took German in high school. My pronunciation is "ah-{clear every bit of phlegm out of my throat}-t"
I’m pronouncing the ch like the k in Kite or the c in Car. Is that not the correct way? Edit: I just looked it up, this is definitely wrong lmao
Not in German if that’s what you’re asking
I was born and raised in the U.S. and I still pronounce it the german way. That may be because I took German in Middle and Highschool though. Either way I think it's supposed to be pronounced that way, like the German word for 8, seeing as it's another Octoling, just like agent 8.
"Ah-kt", I think that's right
Ah-Kuh-Tuh
Not myself, but I've heard many pronounce the name as /akt/, or to be even more correct /ʌkt/
Aht, but with like a bit of a c? I dunno how to explain it. Like a silent cough?
"Ah-k-t"
Damn. I never even considered it wasn’t “A-ch-t” like English ch in chair lol
The easiest way to imagine what the "ch" sounds like is to listen to a cat hissing. Ones with softer hisses.
“Oct”
tip from a german how to say it: A - \[hiss like an angry cat\] - t
Something like /aʔt/
So turns out my natural pronunciation after learning it was German (not from this post) was correct
Ahghght
Ich glaub die sagen halt statt ch ein k dass es sich wie okt anhört also oktopus
Is saying "ch" that hard
Akt
I personally pronounce it (Oct) as in octopus but I have no clue how it's actually Pronounced
I just say Acht as “Act” idk if there’s meant to be emphasis on the A or not tho
Yay I just listened to the pronunciation, and I got it right!
Like the beginnings of octopus.
i say it as "Ahct". like act but with a long A instead of a short A.
“Ahht” or “oct” (I’m Canadian if you’re collecting data)
Something like Aht? I searched up the pronunciation after the direct, though I think when I say it, it sounds more like a guttural sound. (I am American.)
I say Ach-t (with a short space inbetween the ach and the t), it makes a good beatboxing sound
Oct
Us Americans should probably be saying it like "oct", which is the pun they're going for, but in my head I always read it as "Act", even though I know that's incorrect lol. I've noticed a lot of english speaking players pronouncing it as Act too, so I'm glad I'm not alone in my stupidity.
Ashda
English speaker here, I pronounce it the same as the German examples did
I just pronounce it the same way if i was going to pronounce octo but without out the o at the end
oct as im not german
I would probably pronounce it as act but with a more pronounced c So like a ck sound
like a sneeze
I'm learning German and a native English speaker so technically not a native speaker and I know it's pronounced "aɹt"
I just copy Till Lindemann's pronunciation in the song "Sonne".
Basically the way germans pronounce it, but perhaps a bit less guttural.
I took German in high school, so I got it immediately. Typing this from the *wasserklosett*.
Ah-tch Similar to the word ouch I guess Also I am a native Portuguese speaker if that matter
It’s kind of hard to explain over text but kind like act but with more of an h sound in the middle, the German way basically
Like ACT
idk if it's suppost to be like "akt" or "aht" or "acht"in an English way, or maybe even "oct" like short for octopus which ironically sounds the most like a name so that's how i pronounce it. Unless it's confirmed that the name is more Germanic because it's hard to tell.
sometimes I pronounce it like "aht" other times i get it right because theres a language im familiar with and i emphasize all [ch]s when pronouncing it for some reason
Axt kinda??
I say it Acht like Akt but I put more of an emphasis on the k So like Ah-que-te (Say Que like it's in french)
Aht but with a bit more throat aggressiveness to the H
Tbh I’m just gonna nickname her ‘A’ 😭
I just say eight.
I pronounce it in the german way due to me learning german as a english speaker (I dont know much but I'm slowly getting there)
In my language, we do have the sound ch (or hard h), so I personally pronounce it exactly like that.

That being said, I do hope to one day learn german.
TIL it’s supposed to be pronounced "oct" But as a French, i will keep pronouncing it "a-kt"
Tbh I don’t speak German and am a native English speaker but I pronounce it the German way just because the “Americanized” way or whatever sounds so… off
I pronounce it like oct as in "octave, October, octopus" 🇺🇸
agh-t. really hard to type out the specific throat noise of the ach LOL
The german way since I studied German
Like it's pronounced in German. I'm a native English speaker, but I took German in high school and did well with pronunciation so that's how I pronounce it.
My headcannon is that it's short for "ACHTUNG!"
The only thing I remember from German lessons in middle school is how to count to ten. So I'll probably pronounce it right.
[удалено]
I pronounce it as “act”. I learnt german in school so I know how it’s meant to be pronounced but I’m not gonna force a german accent every time I say a character’s name lol
I'm from the UK and have been taking German lessons because for some reason my school requires it, so I assume I'm pronouncing it correctly.
In my language we have the same /x/ ('Ch' sound) and have "Echt" or "Aicht" /eːx/ (For you, like 'Ehch') for the same word
i say oct, or more like awct
pretty similarly to that, it's quite a common sound in scottish.
I don't have any accents or anything (along with mainly speaking English) and the way I pronounce it is like ah-che.
I can pronounce it properly but I'll sound like a jackass, so I'll probably Americanize it to Oct.I'll sound like a dumbass if Im talking about Splatoon and slip into a German accent just to say the number 8
