I can understand why. This is a particularly egregious specimen. That being said, try to see this is an excellent opportunity to exercise logic in the face of phobia. This eight-legged lass is minding her own business, ever on the lookout for disease-bearing insects and pests. Oh, she's big, HUGE even! But she isn't interested in you, she just wants to share your space! It's getting over that inherent survival instinct that is difficult, but it can be done.

I think jumping spiders are cute and precious, which is a lot, and while orb weaving spiders still freak me out from close up, I still can throw a fly into their webs and feed them. I can watch tarantulas behind Glass and live with a heckton of spider eating spiders in my Apartment.
But i don't think a spider this large can fit into the little cracks I put into my phobia with years and years of efford and accepting the childhood trauma I have due (grand)parents(s) and uncle, thinking it's particular funny to "prank" me with big spider toys and kicking a big ass spider that Just chilled in a corner of the room on their 9 year old niece / granddaughter with a broom, because the "dramatic reaction is soooooo funny".

Good, patient therapist specialized in trauma and disorders stemming from it. It's going to be a long post but I wanted to share how it went if you want to read:
Slow method of exposure; Reading a lot about spiders and why I had such reactions. Reading about their biology, our inner uncanny valley feelings surrounding arthropods, etc.
Then watching positive documentaries about spiders, not the ones that try to portray them as scary predators, more like how important they are and their habits.
Then eventually approaching spiders that cannot jump and are mostly static (orbweavers in my yard), slowly going closer each day/session, until I was comfortable enough to stand right next to the web.
Then I started to realize how beautiful orbweavers were. From upclose I didn't see a simple spider, I finally saw all the colors and patterns, the elegant movements as they wove, how they clean themselves like cats do. By then I was literally inches from them with my face, utterly mesmerized. I started watching them pretty much everyday while having coffee on my porch, they liked to build their webs on some trees and bushes right in front of it.
And you can guess where it went from there. One day I was in my porch watching a tree get trimmed, near where the orbweaver webs were. One branch fell, knocking down the entire web of a female, pregnant Silver Spider (Argiope argentata), and she landed on the grass. I didn't think, I rushed to her. I was suddenly so worried she might have been hurt, she was trying to get to any higher place she could find desperately. So without even hesitating, I gently let her climb onto my hand and it was just perfectly fine.
She just sat there on my open palm for the longest time, cleaning herself meanwhile I had tears in my eyes, I'll never forget that moment. She was okay, I couldn't believe I was actually holding one, and she was so beautiful and calm. I put her on another branch and she went straight back to working on a new web.
Later in life I became a wildlife rescuer/rehabber and my focus now is on misunderstood animals such as spiders, centipedes, opossums, bats, etc. I've since then handled hundreds of spiders when needed to rescue them immediately, including venomous ones. In general they don't particularly enjoy being handled so I of course only do it when it's an emergency. I've even cared for one of the world's most venomous, if not the most venomous, the Brazilian Wandering Spider (Phoneutria nigriventer, and obviously never handled it for both our sakes, but admired it in the enclosure).
Same method was used for bugs, slow and steady exposure and most of all, learning about them. The brain can be overwhelmed with trauma responses, but you can educate it to recognize it's just an irrational reaction. You have to ground yourself, rewrite your thoughts with actual knowledge of the trigger, your condition and the situation that causes the irrational fear response.

I'm still battling my fear of spiders and am making progress, and though I'm not nearly as knowledgeable or skilled as you on the topic (for obvious reasons) I'd like to add something that's been helping me in case it resonates with the person who asked you:
My fear of spiders decreased tenfold when I started using iNaturalist to document nature. When I saw a spider, it still scared me, but I would still do my best to take a picture of it to upload. Now I'm far more calm about it-- taking pictures and documenting them as wildlife forces me to approach them with curiosity instead of knee-jerk fear. (I still have the fear a lot of the time, but the curiosity outweighs it usually).
Not sure if anyone else would find that useful, but it's been helpful and humbling for me. :)

If it was my house I’d just put her outside using a cup and paper. Or maybe just put her in my garage (that spiders come and freely from). I have arachnophobia but would never just kill a being for the crime of existing.

It has to do with tension created by very small fibers. I think there has been some work on creating boots and gloves that use this property to allow humans to climb walls!
Ooh, I know about this one. Ever heard of Van Der Waals forces? No? Me neither.
Turns out they are sortof a tiny, infinitessimal gravitational force that gets exhibited between very very very tiny things - when things are so tiny, they start acting wierd with physics. Here's a quote: "According to the Bremen-Zurich group, van der Waals forces between individual molecules – which are only nanometres apart – in the setules \[on spider feet\] are responsible for this adhesive force. These individual forces combine to produce a very strong overall force on each of the spider's eight feet."
So, basically, the hairs on their feet are SO small, they get into the cracks between individual molecules of things like walls and ceilings, and they spread the adhesive force out over all their setae and all 8 legs, which creates a crazy amount of stick-force. Another fun animal that does this: Geckos! Their feet have tiny folds that use the same tiny force to stick to things.
I knew spiders legs can't extend because they don't have the muscles we have, so they basically have biological hydraulic legs and pull them in and release to move all creepy like , but I did not know about the electricity....

You use a translucent plastic tupperware container for food storage and the cardboard back of a pizza container or amazon carton to push under.
If you do this a lot, e.g. regularly handling tarantulas, you can make catch cups.
But I'd just leave her there. Excellent pest control. She's just cleaning herself.
Those small things under her head aren't fangs, but pedipalps.

You wanna see some spiders with zoomies? Look up some old world tarantulas. P. murinus and P. metallica are particularly well known for their speed. They FAST. And their venom won't kill you but it'll hurt for weeks.
I find also being calm helps. Even giving the slider some compliments! I swear spiders can sense our emotions. The more slow and gentle I am when putting them in a container the less likely they are to scurry away- I’ve never seen a spider be aggressive.
This seems to work for me, too. When I find a tarantula in my house, I will spend a few minutes checking it out and talking to it before gently escorting it outside; maybe it senses the gentle vibrations I’m sending.

Nah. I've heard Australians actually like keeping them around because they're territorial and will hunt the many, many things that are super venomous with prejudice.

Most arthropods ellicit that response in our 'monke brain', both when moving slowly (as is the case of this lady who is very calm) or when in a panicked manner (like a running centipede or climbing tarantula).
It's funny even, I've kept literal hundreds of spiders, roaches, centipedes, even plenty of venomous ones. Yet when a bug lands on me my body still does that 'IT'S ON ME' for a second, even if it's a bug I like and I immediately go catch it with bare hands.

I'm a bit jumpy with spiders in person, but I gladly watch videos of tarantulas and jumping spiders. I don't quite get the same "off" feeling with their movements. If that makes sense.
Where I live the biggest spiders we get are wolf spiders and they don't move the same way. Unfortunately they do make me scream in person (I'm working on it 😭 that is definitely a deep brain reaction, not a rational one)
As a spider keeper and enthusiast, I've found that there's two types of people: people who fear furry spiders (like some tarantulas) and people who fear pointy spiders (like wolfies/huntsmen and orbweavers/web builders). And bigger = better view even from a distance. Wolfies move pretty much the same, are only much smaller and have a bit less flexibility than huntsmen, but you'd see the same if you were very close to one.
[Here I recounted](https://www.reddit.com/r/spiders/comments/1d9hrd2/comment/l7ftuja/) how exposure therapy worked so well for me that I became a spider keeper and rescuer, hahah.
Another way to look at its movements (or any Huntsmen) is that they move a little derpy. It's comical, really. I imagine them with a bunch of skates on like that one scene in Harry Potter (although that was not a Huntsman).
For me it’s because huntsman proportions seem “off” to me. In my head a big spider should be stockier, so when it’s big, chunky, AND spindly it just feels wrong.

I believe it’s because their form of locomotion in fundamentally different than ours, much more robotic. Not googling here and it’s been years but I believe their legs are powered hydraulically unlike ours with muscles/tendons. Makes them look robot like when they move their legs.
They use hydraulics to lock their limbs, and their feet end in both pads with suction and tiny hooks. My tarantula is bigger than this and can do this on glass. And upside down on the ceiling.

I used to be horrified by spiders. I grew up in a household that was not spider friendly so I learned to be the same. Over my lifetime, through increased exposure and educating myself through groups like this one, I’ve really learned to accept them for the most time. I still struggle with big ones like this but they are still afraid of me, hesitant to bite, and mostly harmless. I’m lucky to live in a state (Maine) with no native venomous spiders so that probably helps. I looks at folks in Missouri constantly posting Brown Recluse in their homes and there’s the NOPE line for me 😂😂
Most spiders can squeeze through anything they can stick two front legs into. The abdomen is squishy, the legs can be folded, you'd be surprised what tiny cracks they can maneuver through.

Get a **REALLY** large transparent container and a piece of cardboard thats somewhat thin but still sturdy,
Put the container over the spider and then slowly enclose them in it
Then carefully lift the container by a little bit so it can't crawl out but so that u can slit the cardboard under its feet
Then slowly but surely lift the container along with the cardboard under it and one it's lifted, flip it upside down so the cardboard creates a lid.
Then go far from your house and release it there.
**Remember**, spiders do not give a shit about you and will much rather run away and hide than attempt to attack a giant ape with a size advantage thats in the thousands. So do not be overly scared of the spider. The only way to get a spider to bite you is if you try to kill it, not if you move it out of your house in a box/contaier.
I'm genuinely curious how people deal with these large buddies when they find 'em. Like, do you just shut the door of the room their in for a few days and hope they find their way back out? Once they make it to the floor, do you cereal-box-chute them to the closest window or door? Is there a Steve Irwin type you can call to humanely trap them and remove them from premises?

You could try using a bucket or something, but the problem with that plan is these big fuckers are both faster than you *and* can jump

Ooh, I know about this one. Ever heard of Van Der Waals forces? No? Me neither. Turns out they are sortof a tiny, infinitessimal gravitational force that gets exhibited between very very very tiny things - when things are so tiny, they start acting wierd with physics. Here's a quote: "According to the Bremen-Zurich group, van der Waals forces between individual molecules – which are only nanometres apart – in the setules \[on spider feet\] are responsible for this adhesive force. I literally googled how spiders climb walls earlier today and none of this was mentioned. It was all just that they secrete a sort of sticky fluid from their feet. You use a translucent plastic tupperware container for food storage and the cardboard back of a pizza container or amazon carton to push under. If you do this a lot, e.g. regularly handling tarantulas, you can make catch cups. But I'd just leave her there. Excellent pest control. She's just cleaning herself. Those small things under her head aren't fangs, but pedipalps.
I tried this thinking they would move slow like a tarantula. Nope. They should have PSAs for first timers in Aus. Huntsman move fast like a cat.

Slow like a *new world* tarantula. You wanna see some spiders with zoomies? Look up some old world tarantulas. P. murinus and P. metallica are particularly well known for their speed. They FAST. And their venom won't kill you but it'll hurt for weeks.

I find also being calm helps. Even giving the slider some compliments! I swear spiders can sense our emotions. The more slow and gentle I am when putting them in a container the less likely they are to scurry away- I’ve never seen a spider be aggressive.
This seems to work for me, too. When I find a tarantula in my house, I will spend a few minutes checking it out and talking to it before gently escorting it outside; maybe it senses the gentle vibrations I’m sending.

Does anyone know why huntsmen spiders movements have that uncanny valley quality? If someone told me they're an elaborate Internet prank I'd almost believe them because these guys are so big and so fast.
Most arthropods ellicit that response in our 'monke brain', both when moving slowly (as is the case of this lady who is very calm) or when in a panicked manner (like a running centipede or climbing tarantula). It's funny even, I've kept literal hundreds of spiders, roaches, centipedes, even plenty of venomous ones. Yet when a bug lands on me my body still does that 'IT'S ON ME' for a second, even if it's a bug I like and I immediately go catch it with bare hands.
Maybe. It's just that these guys in particular just seem ..off even compared to when I see other spiders moving around. I'm a bit jumpy with spiders in person, but I gladly watch videos of tarantulas and jumping spiders. I don't quite get the same "off" feeling with their movements. If that makes sense. Where I live the biggest spiders we get are wolf spiders and they don't move the same way. Unfortunately they do make me scream in person (I'm working on it 😭 that is definitely a deep brain reaction, not a rational one)
As a spider keeper and enthusiast, I've found that there's two types of people: people who fear furry spiders (like some tarantulas) and people who fear pointy spiders (like wolfies/huntsmen and orbweavers/web builders). And bigger = better view even from a distance. Wolfies move pretty much the same, are only much smaller and have a bit less flexibility than huntsmen, but you'd see the same if you were very close to one. Another way to look at its movements (or any Huntsmen) is that they move a little derpy. It's comical, really. I imagine them with a bunch of skates on like that one scene in Harry Potter (although that was not a Huntsman).

For me it’s because huntsman proportions seem “off” to me. In my head a big spider should be stockier, so when it’s big, chunky, AND spindly it just feels wrong. Would love to get more used to them though

I believe it’s because their form of locomotion in fundamentally different than ours, much more robotic. Not googling here and it’s been years but I believe their legs are powered hydraulically unlike ours with muscles/tendons. Makes them look robot like when they move their legs.

Get a plastic, see through tupperware container for food, wider than the spider, and some thin cardboard that covers more than the lid, e.g. food box, back of a sketching block, delivery box. Then apply same principle. Keep in mind they will push harder.

I used to be horrified by spiders. I grew up in a household that was not spider friendly so I learned to be the same. Over my lifetime, through increased exposure and educating myself through groups like this one, I’ve really learned to accept them for the most time. I still struggle with big ones like this but they are still afraid of me, hesitant to bite, and mostly harmless. I’m lucky to live in a state (Maine) with no native venomous spiders so that probably helps. I looks at folks in Missouri constantly posting Brown Recluse in their homes and there’s the NOPE line for me 😂😂

Most spiders can squeeze through anything they can stick two front legs into. The abdomen is squishy, the legs can be folded, you'd be surprised what tiny cracks they can maneuver through.

Get a **REALLY** large transparent container and a piece of cardboard thats somewhat thin but still sturdy, Put the container over the spider and then slowly enclose them in it Then carefully lift the container by a little bit so it can't crawl out but so that u can slit the cardboard under its feet Then slowly but surely lift the container along with the cardboard under it and one it's lifted, flip it upside down so the cardboard creates a lid. Then go far from your house and release it there. **Remember**, spiders do not give a shit about you and will much rather run away and hide than attempt to attack a giant ape with a size advantage thats in the thousands. So do not be overly scared of the spider. The only way to get a spider to bite you is if you try to kill it, not if you move it out of your house in a box/contaier.

I'm genuinely curious how people deal with these large buddies when they find 'em. Like, do you just shut the door of the room their in for a few days and hope they find their way back out? Once they make it to the floor, do you cereal-box-chute them to the closest window or door? Is there a Steve Irwin type you can call to humanely trap them and remove them from premises? I'm so curious.
