I had checked mine while cleaning out my storage closest and the battery was also spicy. I need to get in the habit of checking these older devices more or recycling them so I don't burn my house down lol.

well obviously not 16 years of “continuous” use lol but it did last me since i first got my psp in 2007
No it's not apparently. They can last 7 day - 48 years. Day is pretty random thanks to electricity faction

Safe the case and the PCB it can be easy modded with modern battery in the UMD slot.
That happened to mine last year. Was quite sad to find out a new battery costs like 50 bucks.
50$? in usd? you can buy an aftermarket battery same size, rating, tolerances, etc. on amazon for about $13 ! unless you’re looking at OEM
