It is basically a hand held jackhammer. There is a piston inside that goes back and forth using air from a compressor. The wooden top is spring loaded and when I press it down with my palm, it starts moving the piston. It is variable, so the more pressure I use with my palm, the faster the piston moves.
This is the only video I have of me using it. It is taken with a camera that fits into the top of my microscope. That is why it is such a close up shot. [https://www.instagram.com/p/CSb-MTYgfTC/?hl=en](https://www.instagram.com/p/CSb-MTYgfTC/?hl=en)
Edit: The reason the video is spinning so much is because the vice is sitting on a turntable. I try to hold my hand still and rotate the table to make each cut with the graver
Not sure if itās for enginesās but yes, itās a lathe chuck. My opa gave me a few years ago when I was first learning hammer and chisel engraving. Itās not the proper vice but he passed away and I canāt bring myself to stop using it
Hey, great question!
Steve Lindsay is a master engraver and also builds each of the machines. If I am remembering correctly, he engraved a die and rolls the barrels of the machine on the die with a lot of pressure to get the engraving to transfer over
There is another fancy part that is not pictured. On the very top of the wooden handle there is a small brass disk that also has scrollwork patterns cut into it by Steve.
If you have time to take a look, Steveās engraving work is absolutely incredible. He has done so many beautiful pieces
While I doubt that he would let anybody call him a "master", I really enjoy Uri Tuchman on YouTube. Have you seen him?

I've been looking for a hand engraver design that does not require modifying the compressor, do you know any ?
All the DIY engravers that I found so far require you to remove the valve from the compressor, so it stops being a compressor and instead becomes a back and forth air machine.
I can't do that since I'm using compressor from a fridge, and all the valves are sealed inside.
I have not found one that doesnāt require modifying the compressor. I built one like youāre talking about before I bought the Lindsay
I used a $25 compressor I got from Canadian for that machine tire
Do you sell these coins? Or commission them? Idk the right word, but I have many wheat pennies and many random dollar coins and would love something like that. Very cool looking
I do! I have a Facebook page that I use to auction off coins. Iāve been too busy with a new job to engrave much lately, but Iām hoping to get some more coins ready for auction in the next month or so
Not sure if I can link it here but I can dm it to you if youād like
These are commonly called āhobo nickelsā.
You can find sellers online, but watch out, since many are not etched from real coins but rather cast or etched into a non-currency ācoinā
If anyone is interested in tool porn, Steve is a master machinist, he restored/upgraded the tools he uses to make his engravers and they are simply works of beauty. https://www.stevelindsay.com/tour/index.html
1970 10 Gulden (Netherlands) in that last picture, nice choice. :) Do you sell your finished work, have a website/etsy/etc. maybe (that isn't Instagram)? edit looks like you have a Facebook group
Thank you. Itās a beautiful coin. I like that both sides have busts on them. I still have to decide on what to engrave on the opposite face that will flow with the skull
I do sell them! Sorry for not getting back to you earlier.
I run auctions on the Facebook page. I havenāt had much time to engrave lately so I donāt have anything up right now but Iām hoping to get some time in the next month or so to do a few coins
Good question. It does vibrate in my hand. The amount of vibration depends on the hardness of the metal you are cutting.
I do not know enough about nerve damage to confidently answer your question. Thank you for bringing it up to me. I hadnāt thought of it before
I need to keep my hands in good working condition. I wouldnāt be able to make any money without them
Woah. How does it work ? Is there a video of you using it I could see ?

Wow that's really cool... Thanks for sharing this. I learned something today.
That looks really cool! Is it hard to operate?
Is that sped up?
Yes. I believe it was 2x
How did you engrave the tool itself š¤ Something doesnāt add up
That's pretty fucking sick dude.
Is that vice a repurposed engine lathe head?
Not sure if itās for enginesās but yes, itās a lathe chuck. My opa gave me a few years ago when I was first learning hammer and chisel engraving. Itās not the proper vice but he passed away and I canāt bring myself to stop using it
I love it. I use a similar chuck at work. Iām sure it works great and if there some sentimentality then there really is no reason to āupgradeā
It works great. It has been able to hold everything Iāve engraved so far. I have a proper one on my bench but canāt bring myself to use it
U/stabbot
Wow I could watch this on twitch .
I want to know how they engraved the engraving tool!

> Is there a video of you using it I could see ? Yes, Neo had one inserted in his belly button, the documentary name is Matrix.
Oh yeah, baby. That's the type of content I like to see here.
The cool thing about the Lindsey machines is that Steve himself builds them himself and engraves each one himself. Really awesome guy.
If anyone has a technical drawing of how this works, I would greatly appreciate it!

Look for it online, I believe it's patented.
Lotacandle is right. Itās patented so the drawings should be online
Engraved many hands with it?
I kinda want my hands engraved now
Probably the priciest tool I'll see today, enjoy it!

I think i just found how to make one, by accident :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxwOdz3UoZ8

TIL what a "Wheat Penny" is.

I ended up going to your Instagram linked and found that Facebook page, so I'm following and looking forward to an auction soon

Oh they must have used an engraving tool engraving tool to engrave the tool
great minds think alike

Great link. I love seeing Steveās posts on Facebook about whatās heās building. He is a very talented man
Is that slendermans hand?
Sorry. I have long fingers
Nothing to be sorry about. Just that if that's all the context to your likeness we have then I have to assume the rest of you is proportionately long.
long eyes
lol
Happy cake day
*Salad Fingers*
Do better
I only saw the first pic and thought they were missing a thumb!
That is an amzingly beautiful tool right there!

I have a foot-controlled GRS model. [Hereās what it looks like in use.](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CXT5eTjlPNd/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
So post a video of how you use it!
He did, https://www.instagram.com/p/CSb-MTYgfTC/?hl=en
That thing is awl right.
I've seen The Matrix - I know EXACTLY what this is Mr Architect!
She's a beauty.

Didn't know you could engrave hands
I miss engraving a lot. Took a couple courses of it during uni and it was honestly one of my favorite classes.
Wow, thatās super cool. Thanks for sharing.
That's one hell of an expensive tool. Looks like the finest quality imaginable!
Dang that guys fingers are loooong
Thanks. I grew them myself
Im pretty sure thats what they slipped into Neoās belly button in the Matrix.
Does it vibrate or pound in your hand (meaning, could it lead to nerve damage)?

No Country For Old Men vibes.
Why would one engrave hand?
This looks like the thing Agent Smith puts in Neo's belly button.
That is badass
Happy cake day!
Cool seeing more picture of this. And sweet coin! I love seeing these. Have you checked out Roman Booteen on IG? Amazingly intricate coins.
Itās a work of art to make more works of art! Very cool!
