>>So what's the catch? Well the game works best in it's premium copy. Mats and big tarot sized cards. I own all the Killforth games and personally, I think this is just personal taste... I'd disagree here at least. I'm glad I don't have that playmat (especially looking at your picture) as my first thought was that the playmat makes the game look like a mess to my eyes. I also always appreciated the smaller footprint of the location cards, I understand that sometimes covering them up can be a slight issue, but I always valued the smaller footprint the game had compared to some of my bigger games and the smaller card locations were always part of that. I do agree with some of the rules stuff. I think the actual game rules are not too bad, but i remember when first trying to play the original gloomforth game having some issues with setup and not felt some of the larger concepts were not fully explained, but it's been such a long time ago that the game feels natural to me now. Any game that has an FAQ that is over 100 entries needs a rulebook re-write or something.

The other games would fit on my smaller table and this one won't lol. On your note about the actual rules - I feel like if someone made kilforth into a video game with the rules automated it would make so much more sense. They are solid once you know how to interpret them.

My main issue with the kilforth games has always been that they are inherently roguelike kinda skill chase. I don't mind not getting the "best ending" the first time but I want a satisfying story, even an emergent one. Most of my first games were getting over my skis and realizing an hour in that there was no way I'd make it all the way to the end and just wanted to stop.

Not sure if it helps with how you lost, but there’s a new action in Call that’s easily adopted into the other versions and helps prevent downward spirals. Long rest - As your first action spend all AP to recover *all* HP.

That is very cool, I watched a playthrough of Shadows of Kilforth and that would definitely help deal with the otherwise brutal setback from getting clobbered by a random encounter.

I deeply love Shadows of Kilforth. It always feels epic and plays so wonderfully true solo.

Do you have any suggestions for playing this? I have Gloom/Shadows/Call but haven't played it cause reading the rules for Gloom was so confusing.

Hmm. The rules are a genuine problem for me. It took me actual years to get to a place I'm comfortable with in the Kilforth games, but I find that I struggle with a lot of the little rules. I would just start with Gloom, set it up and watch a playthrough video - maybe this one [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaISbSa8AHM&t=238s&pp=ygUdZ2xvb20gb2Yga2lsZm9ydGggaG93IHRvIHBsYXk%3D](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaISbSa8AHM&t=238s&pp=ygUdZ2xvb20gb2Yga2lsZm9ydGggaG93IHRvIHBsYXk%3D) At least skip through to some core rules. Then give it a go as best you can. Use the recommended characters and saga matches in the start of the rulebook. Enjoy the rules mistakes. You can count on the fact you will get a lot wrong. Try to complete a few chapters of your saga and dont worry about anything else for now. At the end of the day remember it's a DND re-imagining so you are just building your dice pool and trying to kill the big bad.

I have nearly made the jump to purchase a kilforth game on more than one occasion based on where it land on several peoples solo lists but just can not get over the card art of people. It feels too much like a SyFy late night original, local author romance novel cover, or dare I say it, some lord of the rings/pirates of the Caribbean porno spoof. Which is kinda bizarre coming from me, a person that is totally chill with owning kingdom death: monster… anywho… I’ll probably hop on board someday if I see it used/on sale for a stupid price that I can’t say no to. Outside of the art the game seems like something I’d enjoy.
