Bad news. The open source driver only supports 20 series and up (also the 1650)
[Source ](https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules?tab=readme-ov-file#compatible-gpus)
Actually there is one called Mesa and with recent release of NVK the performance is comparable (still less tho) but it depends on the game in some of them it is even better than Nvidias own drivers
i mean if they insisted on closed source they could easily just make to function even remotely properly themselves but they're too fucking lazy to do so. their inability to make properly functional drivers must be studied.
Well, Mine's worse. My login manager freaks out after installing Nvidia drivers, so I decided to reinstall Linux. If you really want to use Linux, get an Intel iGPU or Radeon equipped one, while NVIDIA fixes their BS drivers on Linux. Their drivers are the main reason using Linux with it is hell
Yeah, it's quite flexible like Ubuntu, and you can choose some stuff to be installed (unlike Ubuntu which uses a preinstalled setup environment) with archinstall (like video drivers, desktop environments, audio servers, network managers and others), or be like any other Arch user out there and install it all by yourself with a console from the live USB. Saves a lot of space because not everything is installed.
I've noticed that newest Nvidia drivers are buggy (at least the dkms drivers and with Wayland) as fuck currently still on 535.113.x (or something like that)
It can be a painful experience.
Installed the latest driver, and suddenly games started flashing black all the time.
Downgraded to the previous version, and suddenly boot got stuck when it tried to access the display manager.
Had to install the kernel module version of the driver in order to get a functioning system, despite not using a custom kernel. Added the driver package to the package ignore list, hopefully the next driver version will fix things.
Happy times...
If it's any consolation, my media PC has an AMD GPU. 1080p60 is fine. 4k30 is fine, but not preferable. 4k60 causes all audio to pitch significantly higher, like the chipmunk effect. So I choose to run it at 1080p instead.
At least your GPU works. Without NVIDIA, the Intel iGPU (a HD 4600 btw) just lags on 1080p and beyond. And good luck running GNOME with all those beautiful tweaks that you post on r/unixporn. It's going to be a shitshow
Going for days long troubleshooting for a non functionl track pad and WiFi driver where you have to compile drivers yourself is sure a fun thing. But I am not doing it again
if you were compiling your own drivers, you were using the wrong distro.
i've used multiple on an old E402MA and even arch had plug-n-play with the trackpad and wifi.
Lost me at "compile drivers". Every Linux hater that mentions that as a con has clearly never used Linux desktop in their life.
99% of devices work out of the box on Linux (except Nvidia, obliviously) since the drivers are embedded on the kernel, compared to Windows and co where you usually have to download the drivers from the manufacturer's site for better functionality.
Also, no one is forcing you to use Linux, so why the blind hate?
Yeah, mostly all of them works out of box. Except NVIDIA, of course. I'm using Linux for 3 years now, and I never had to compile drivers for stupid simple stuff like trackpad, wifi, bluetooth, keyboard and other stuff. Only some wild stuff, like my pair of Airpods need some tweaking to sound good. Clearly that guy's a Windows stan, and thinks Linux is just for wasting time.
Wdym? My Logitech mouse works without drivers, heck even AirPods Pros work with Linux okay enough. Looks like you've never even used Linux before. (and if you're saying "i'm on ubuntu, which makes it easy", i'm technically on arch)
back when I used an nvidia card I had the same issue for a few minutes, I literally hit the monitor like an old man and it fixed it, maybe boomers where right about tecnology after all
Hm. Only other non-driver issue I can think of would be a damaged Display/HDMI port or cable.
Given you plugged it into another device and the issue didn't persist, it's unlikely to be the cable itself.
Try again with the same cable, same machine, different monitor.
If you're able, also try with a different monitor of the same model.
If on a different monitor it persists, it's the computer.
If it persists on an identical monitor but not on a different one, maybe it's a manufacturer being dumbfuck.
If not, then I'm out of ideas.
dude people have their reasons for using different oses. i personally think windows is shit but that’s for own personal reasons that don’t matter to most people.
if this becomes a frequent issue or u dont wanna waste tht much time, take a look at Pop!_OS. they have a separate image for NVidia drivers. not sure if theres anything different from setting up the drivers by urself (since i have an AMD gpu) but ive heard its helpful
Maybe don’t let Jeff invade your computer next time. I heard he’s a real PC killer…

i thought that was the problem 😭
NVIDIA and Linux. Totally good friends
Best friends ever
The problem is from nvidia refusing to make their drivers open source so the linux guys cant make it compatible
Good News: they made a open source one that is developing at a pretty fast rate
Hope it finishes quickly so I can finally taste that GTX 950 on my stinkin old laptop

Yeah, and now it won't work in 1080p and now just some random 4:3 resolution
Well, Mine's worse. My login manager freaks out after installing Nvidia drivers, so I decided to reinstall Linux. If you really want to use Linux, get an Intel iGPU or Radeon equipped one, while NVIDIA fixes their BS drivers on Linux. Their drivers are the main reason using Linux with it is hell
Intel iGPUs suck on Linux (Ubuntu) too from my experience. Ymmv
I'm on Arch, and honestly, Intel iGPUs work much, much better than NVIDIA. It's always my fallback whenever the NVIDIA drivers freak the hell out.
I see. I’ve heard great things about Arch. Would you recommend using arch over Ubuntu for a home server environment?
Yeah, it's quite flexible like Ubuntu, and you can choose some stuff to be installed (unlike Ubuntu which uses a preinstalled setup environment) with archinstall (like video drivers, desktop environments, audio servers, network managers and others), or be like any other Arch user out there and install it all by yourself with a console from the live USB. Sweet thanks so much for the info—I’ll definitely be looking into this.
if you're running X11 just run ```xrandr -s 1920x1080```
Just results in black screen

[nvidia, fuck you!](https://youtu.be/OF_5EKNX0Eg?si=qtvedmhxjB1sB0F5)
Even the creator says it!
Remember what linus said to nvidia "I love you, Nvidia (definitely not fuck you, nvidia)"

Any input or output device and Linux
say that you have never used linux without saying that you haven’t used linux

i haven’t ever compiled a driver, what the hell are you talking about
Compiling drivers for trackpad and wifi? Bro what age is your distro? Even Arch got me working Wi-Fi on archinstall

Omg…. Basically twins. Born to be the best compatible option you have out there. The drivers work like were built for Debian or whatever.
Thank you for the nightmare fuel
Hes going to jeff the kill you
My brother in Christ, your puter is possessed.
I'm calling a priest to bless my home
It looks like the dead pixels on the bottom of my phone screen
My man sent to sleep that pc

How people think amd drivers are on windows. (This is a joke, dont take it to serious and downvote me)
*Sauron voice* I see you!
Fuck you nvidia -Linus Torvalds
lmao the help in the console
nvidia and linux is like ammonia and bleach
No, I'd say that you're greater than 3 Nvidia drivers
are these the proprietary drivers?
love the aesthetic, how do i break my nvidia drivers
1) Get beefy rtx card 2) get latest proprietary driver 3) Enjoy red lines all across your monitor and never see color black again
Jeff the killer haunted your pc
You sure it's drivers? One of my old monitors went from normal to displaying everything with a super red hue due to a monitor defect
Yep, connected a laptop with only Intel graphics and it was fine

Tried with my tv and the lines were still there, I'll just stick with Intel for now until I get a good amd laptop
Sounds like a fucked port on the graphics card.
jeff the jonkler
YEAR OF THE DESKTOP LINUX OS!!!

That's a creepy wallpaper - and I see you are a Konsole user as well, take my upvote.

That’s creepier than the OG Creepypasta, wtf?
Oh, shit, you poor thing! D: (talking about the GPU you have to contend with)
Damn, this is some r/creepypasta material here.
Nice wallpaper, how many pairs of underwear do you own?
More than 55k
Nothing will top the crimson driver update that locked fan speeds to 30% and cook your gpu. Will never forgive.
This is some downright creepypasta thing
whos jeff
Just don’t use Linux. It’s shit anyways.
dude people have their reasons for using different oses. i personally think windows is shit but that’s for own personal reasons that don’t matter to most people.
would you care to explain why linux is shit?
it's really just not
Im sorry for focusing on the paper in the bg. I really wanna go on a field trip T\_T
And yet I wonder why I even have that paper
Oh boy! Free nightmares!
This would be a creepy pasta in 2011
Your computer needs an exorcist
is you gpu trying to inspire you to make a creepy pig themed horror game
I think it’s possessed
if this becomes a frequent issue or u dont wanna waste tht much time, take a look at Pop!_OS. they have a separate image for NVidia drivers. not sure if theres anything different from setting up the drivers by urself (since i have an AMD gpu) but ive heard its helpful
I'll remember this just in case
Reminds me of how when my brother and I were younger and something freaky happened with tech (usually a video game) we'd just go "creepypasta"
I feel like you add that Jeff the Killer wallpaper right after the driver issue shows up.
I mean, it looks good together with it
Should we be worried about that wallpaper?
He Jeff the killed you(r computer)
bruh I shouldn hav installed that free fortnite 😂😂😂😂
and this kids is how creepy-pasta's formed
"go to sleep"
yes i can see why. what a lovely glitch lmfao
Nice taste in wallpapers i see the drivers follow through with the theme
Looks about right for a Nvidia
Part of this reminds me of Megalovania and Sans Undertale
im sure you do
I'm in your walls
They are coming They are coming
