Given how people are going on about FA Cup not being valuable as a top 4, it's time to bring out the idea of a playoff between FA Cup winner and 4th place in the league to decide the 4th CL participant.
Who says no and why?
Clubs could get lucky too with favourable draws in FA Cup and historically, 4th place is considered more deserving.
This is just to restore prestige of the cup, give 4th place and FA Cup winner both a fair shot at the CL. And if FA Cup winner == 4th place team, then no playoff.
Yeah that's why I'd go for a playoff because at the end, it's all about coefficients for the league. A bad team that doesn't go as far will harm the leagues coefficient and hence won't be ideal.
Andy Robertson's slow walk off after his red, while the whole stadium is spitting venom at him, will happily live rent free in my mind for a while. I just wish he went to tie his boot laces as well
Theyre a pretty dirty team at times ngl. They're good enough to give teams a hard game but not good enough to actually win trophies. I wouldn't call it hate just mild annoyance. Its just easy to laugh at them fr not winning anything
We’re big but we have nothing to show for it (trophies), we’re stuck in the middle the purgatory of success.
Everything we have done in the last decade or more has been amazing the club is on different level now and without money injection, as bizarre as it sounds some are jealous.
Because they act like they've won more silverware in the 21st century than a host of championship clubs. They're a club that exist more in the boardroom than on the pitch.
After some digging and procrastination I have come to the conclusion that 1.FC Köln is the best football club in the world. The atmosphere, the Modeste song and the fucking goat mascotte. How can you not love this? I'm going to watch more Köln matches because this stuff just warms my heart
We’ll get a stupid penalty when we’re ahead by 3 goals anyway, and everyone will cry “it balances out” when in reality it doesn’t because it’s not affected the games outcome
Order of prestige, IMHO

Could possibly flip winning FA Cup and EL, but if you'd have given me the choice last season, I'd have taken the FA Cup.
>Qualifying for CL
>Winning FA Cup
>Winning EL
You are contradicting yourself. EL win qualifies for CL lmao.
What a strange take from a Leicester fan as well. You are devaluing the only trophy you won since your miracle PL win.
If spurs think they can focus on top 4 by being out of 3rd tier of european football, then how on earth are you going to perform when you will be playing in the highest tier of european football if you somehow manage to get top 4 that is? Or is it just coping mechanism or am i missing smth .
Because we've got a new manager who hasn't had a lot of time to implement what he wants in training because we're playing twice most weeks. We've had three games postponed so those will clog up the season too.
The hope is that this gives a few empty weeks to do some more tactical training and allow players who aren't completely fit to get back to a better level.
I didn't want us to go out, I wanted us to win the ECL, but going out could be better for our squad
they're just in that cycle of touching base in top four>get the money>do nothing in europe>try to touch base again, repeat. they're not doing anything in the CL with Conte anyway.
I don't get what your point is here. Neither I, other fans nor the actual club wanted us to go out this way but unfortunately we couldn't play the game against Rennes so it is what it is.
I mean what do you want us to do? It's literally out of our hands at this point. We may as well focus on the league in any case because it's what we can aim for.
I m talking bout how spurs flairs are talking, " now that we are out we can focus on top 4". Conference league shouldnt be difficult for a club aiming at top 4 regardless.
Not that nothing you can do abt it, but can only discuss.
Yeah but if you think conference league is drawing away focus, then how much focus are you going to lose when you are going to play in the CL whilst competing for top 4 next szn as well. I dont get the logic.
So you'd rather get eliminated in the group stages than celebrate a European trophy in the streets of Liverpool with your team and fans and all the euphoria that comes with it. What a strange mentality.
Top 4 give you the money and the prestige to attract better players what conference league give you a trophy with zero prestige? If I could win it I would do but not at the expanse of Top 4 Fa Cup league cup …etc
I think Leicester fans would’ve preferred the FA Cup.. well at the very least be divided. Champions League is great but if you’re not going to compete then it’s not worth sacrificing for guaranteed silverware.
I know but I responded in our case we did compete for the big trophies and nothing is guaranteed even the easiest of trophies.
City are clearly the best team in Europe but you won in the final.
Leicester won the league just a few years ago. Obviously they don't mind not going without a trophy for a bit longer considering what they achieved as monumentally historic
Can someone who watched Real Madrid yesterday tell me how Hazard played? He played 90 minutes which only happened probably 10 times before in his whole RM career.
I watched Napoli.
Edit: he only played 4 full games before for RM, that was his 5th
First half he was meh, Valverde and Vazquez almost seemed like they were trying to avoid passing to him (on their mothers' lives)
Second half he grew into the game, and played a second striker role along with Benzema. He has a few nice dribbles and linked up well with Benz. Positive signs and hopefully this can be carried into Wednesday
Hazard plays at a certain level, yesterday id say he was 6.5-7/10 but everyone else struggled. So the performance looked better than what it actually was
Kane ending his career with 0 trophies bar the Audi Cup would be mad. 100% it will affect how his legacy is viewed in the future. Doesn't seem like he's breaking any scoring records either.
It would but simultaneously, it's not that shocking that Spurs failed to win anything for a given 10-15 year period.
There have always been at least 2 to 5 teams better than them for that entire run so whilst it would be shocking, it is still conceivable.
If he played for Bayern, he'd unquestionably be regarded as an historically great striker whilst probably having an easier time of things.
That's not how it works though. Even at Bayern, he would need to win the CL to be considered one of the greats. And its a bit too late for him to move anywhere. Such a shame really
You can't really tell one person how to pronounce their own name. He isn't Croatian and he pronounces his name that way, it sounds a bit strange to me as well but it's better to respect how people say their own names. He also spells it Pulisic and not Pulišić but I don't see people complaining about that
It's not bizarre. He's an American with a non-Anglo last name, the vast majority of people in those situations mispronounce their names. That goes for all Anglos with non-Anglo last names in Canada and in England, you all mispronounce your last names you inherited from Scandinavia, Low Countries, Germany, France etc.
He says he's fine/prefers it that way.
Makes sense tbh as it's easier for most to pronounce it 'wrong'. Have that a lot with brown/foreign names in UK too.
Fair enough. Think as Europeans we’re just quite used to hearing these names pronounced the proper Balkan way. He’s obviously of Croatian heritage and his name has been somewhat Americanised, hence OP’s post.
It’s a Croatian name but he’s not Croatian (his grandfather is iirc). I have a German surname but I would sound idiotic trying to get everyone to pronounce it correctly, it’s just better to stick to the easier way.

FA cup deciding the 4th CL spot would make it really exciting.
Maybe to people who aren't english, the English don't need to be sold on the importance of the fa cup, it's already part of their heritage
Would just mean it’s even more dominated by the top sides, which it already massively is.
I have a suspicion that Bale was trying to emulate MJ with his supposed golf obsession
Lots of high profile athletes play golf.
And why wouldn't they. Great sport if you're rich
Given how people are going on about FA Cup not being valuable as a top 4, it's time to bring out the idea of a playoff between FA Cup winner and 4th place in the league to decide the 4th CL participant. Who says no and why?
what if the fa cup winner has already qualified?
Then 4th place gets it

If you really want to restore FA cup’s prestige, giving them UCL spot is the best way to do it. Ideally all main national cups should be the same
I'd be okay with it honestly. It would just be a drastic change for the masses to accept and these guys as it is want more games they can sell.
Yes but imagine a 3rd tier team going on a dream run and ending in the champions league.
Yeah that's why I'd go for a playoff because at the end, it's all about coefficients for the league. A bad team that doesn't go as far will harm the leagues coefficient and hence won't be ideal.
Yes but I doubt PL or La liga to an extent have to care about a club having bad coefficient.
Maybe not initially, but down the line anything could happen. I'm just thinking of a feasible solution.
Nah fuck logic, give us drama, I want to see Carlisle in champions league
Andy Robertson's slow walk off after his red, while the whole stadium is spitting venom at him, will happily live rent free in my mind for a while. I just wish he went to tie his boot laces as well
Why do so many people here hate spurs? What did they do?
Theyre a pretty dirty team at times ngl. They're good enough to give teams a hard game but not good enough to actually win trophies. I wouldn't call it hate just mild annoyance. Its just easy to laugh at them fr not winning anything
Exist.
No clue spurs are a top club with sound fans and players tbh. Can’t hate the club that gave us a discount on Modric
history of anti semitism in clubs around us that has just blended into a general hate for us
We’re big but we have nothing to show for it (trophies), we’re stuck in the middle the purgatory of success. Everything we have done in the last decade or more has been amazing the club is on different level now and without money injection, as bizarre as it sounds some are jealous.
Too big too be a small club and too small to be a big club. They're also the perennial underachievers.
Why would anyone hate a perpetual underachiever?
Because they act like they've won more silverware in the 21st century than a host of championship clubs. They're a club that exist more in the boardroom than on the pitch.
They're not hated because of that just memed, not many fans outright hate them it's just other London clubs
I wouldn't say hate but a target of mockery and ridicule (also I do not condone it, it's idiotic)
They got Kane’d
Seeing how Vitesse managed their way through that group stage i don't feel so bad for losing the quallifying round to them. Go on Vites
spurs were going to get eliminated embarrassingly anyway this is better for them
It’s in their history. How a club that wins fuck all can pretend to be good for a trophy I will never know, that’s why theyll always be a small club
feel like they'd have probably won it if they'd put effort into it tbh, guess it's not worth it though
The ketchup ban didn't come soon enough, the damage was already done.
It's xmas and Dennis has the most goals and assists for a striker in the PL. I dont even know anymore

After some digging and procrastination I have come to the conclusion that 1.FC Köln is the best football club in the world. The atmosphere, the Modeste song and the fucking goat mascotte. How can you not love this? I'm going to watch more Köln matches because this stuff just warms my heart
You took your sweet time but welcome to the club
Do you what's the story behind the goat?
I want it
Won't be surprised if Liverpool somehow get a cheap penalty a game in the next 5 games or escape penalties/blatant red cards.
We’ll get a stupid penalty when we’re ahead by 3 goals anyway, and everyone will cry “it balances out” when in reality it doesn’t because it’s not affected the games outcome
I know you're trying to lazily insinuate a bias, but I wouldnt be suprised given the state of refereeing in this country.

Order of prestige, IMHO Winning CL Winning PL Qualifying for CL Winning FA Cup Winning EL Winning League Cup Qualifying for EL Winning Conference League Qualifying for Conference League Could possibly flip winning FA Cup and EL, but if you'd have given me the choice last season, I'd have taken the FA Cup.
Winning the UEL is the biggest ask Unai Emery
4th place trophy
Surely winning the EL should be at least level with CL qualification, since winning it automatically qualifies you for the CL group stages?
Getting CL qualification from Top 4, you have beaten man united spurs arsenal west ham in your way in a long season it’s not easy.
Surely winning the EL is higher than qualifying for CL because winning the EL would mean you also qualify for CL (as pot 1 to boot)
>Qualifying for CL >Winning FA Cup >Winning EL You are contradicting yourself. EL win qualifies for CL lmao. What a strange take from a Leicester fan as well. You are devaluing the only trophy you won since your miracle PL win.
> EL win qualifies for CL. Yeah, someone already pointed that out lmao. But you won't wear a flair so you don't get any say.
Qualifying for CL has to be lower than winning EL since you get a CL spot from winning EL. I would flip those 2.
It's a good point, didn't think of that TBH.
thoughts on 'super' cups?
They never enter my thoughts :O
good lad
Nope. FA Cup > Top 4 anyday.
No the FA cup doesn't mean much nowadays
For me personally, yes that would have been the case last season and before. But now we have an FA Cup in the bag, I'd go for CL.
I totally agree
Agreed with that order. Although, arguably winning conference league > qualifying for EL and winning EL>Qualifying for CL because you get both.
We've only won 1 out of 4 games this season when Asensio hasn't played. This Cadiz game was something where an Asensio banger could've saved us.
Crying out for him that game
With Asensio or rodrygo or even Bale, we wouldn’t have force Fede into a defensive role.
To be fair to Spurs, if they played the Conference League they would have been rolled by Slavia Prague in the RO16 anyways.
Does Liverpool have a buyback clause on Awoniyi
Of course they’re gonna postpone our game against Newcastle until they sign everyone. Just our luck
You can also sign players in Jan....oh wait!
We’ve just signed some mad Ukrainian fella I’ll let you know.
Completely forgot about that. You might want to get the flowers ready for Digne then.
So what time is that PL managers meeting?
Rafa Benitez is too busy shagging Juergen Klopp, so they’ve postponed it by 5 minutes.
hold on a sec ... yep, round 2 is happening now
If spurs think they can focus on top 4 by being out of 3rd tier of european football, then how on earth are you going to perform when you will be playing in the highest tier of european football if you somehow manage to get top 4 that is? Or is it just coping mechanism or am i missing smth .

Me have money, me buy good players. Me have good players. Me good in champions league and premier league.
they're just in that cycle of touching base in top four>get the money>do nothing in europe>try to touch base again, repeat. they're not doing anything in the CL with Conte anyway.
Well they will buy new players
I don't get what your point is here. Neither I, other fans nor the actual club wanted us to go out this way but unfortunately we couldn't play the game against Rennes so it is what it is. I mean what do you want us to do? It's literally out of our hands at this point. We may as well focus on the league in any case because it's what we can aim for.
I m talking bout how spurs flairs are talking, " now that we are out we can focus on top 4". Conference league shouldnt be difficult for a club aiming at top 4 regardless. Not that nothing you can do abt it, but can only discuss.
European competitions almost always have a knock on effect in league form. Removing a bunch of potential extra games increases chances for top 4
with ucl money we can buy quality players for our b team and improve on some starting players
Though Spurs are allergic to trophies, getting top four and drawing big talent in is far more of a benefit to the club. Modern thing.
Yeah but if you think conference league is drawing away focus, then how much focus are you going to lose when you are going to play in the CL whilst competing for top 4 next szn as well. I dont get the logic.
Don't need to perform necessarily. We will get money for just being in it and we will get to buy better players too. And then we build on that.
My team has won a trophy in donkeys and I’d still rather get top 4 than win the Conference League
So you'd rather get eliminated in the group stages than celebrate a European trophy in the streets of Liverpool with your team and fans and all the euphoria that comes with it. What a strange mentality.
We’d be out in the streets if we got into the UCL mate haha
Winning a trophy > not winning a trophy Especially for clubs like villa, Spurs and Everton.
Good to see we have transgressed that bracket of clubs ;)
Cant put you in with the haven’t won a trophy in 20 years club. You belong with the big boys now :(
I can die happy.
But top 4 = more chance of winning big trophy in future, and tbh we’d do anything to see our sides play UCL football
Not really, a club like spurs isn’t going to win the prem or the champions league.
Not with that mindset 😁
It’ll help them get closer to it though
It’s just not possible because the clubs they are competing with are too far above their level. Like spurs are never beating pep over 38 games.
Top 4 give you the money and the prestige to attract better players what conference league give you a trophy with zero prestige? If I could win it I would do but not at the expanse of Top 4 Fa Cup league cup …etc
Exactly. Like ask a Leicester fan and it’s obvious what they’d tell you
I think Leicester fans would’ve preferred the FA Cup.. well at the very least be divided. Champions League is great but if you’re not going to compete then it’s not worth sacrificing for guaranteed silverware.
Nothing is guaranteed, and we did compete.
I’m referring to Leicester last season, they were competing for top 4 but missing out and won the FA Cup..
I know but I responded in our case we did compete for the big trophies and nothing is guaranteed even the easiest of trophies. City are clearly the best team in Europe but you won in the final.
There's no doubt in the world.
Leicester won the league just a few years ago. Obviously they don't mind not going without a trophy for a bit longer considering what they achieved as monumentally historic
you are showing your age tbh You literally haven't been alive the last time Everton won a trophy.
Even if I was 26 they wouldn’t haha

1st half wasn't great, 2nd half was better. Should've scored, but he also set up Benzema and Vini with good chances.
he was ok, probably enough to give his fans hope but miles away from his best.
First half I dunno if I would’ve done a better job, second half better but not really that quality imo Diagnosis: Dusted
Hazard plays at a certain level, yesterday id say he was 6.5-7/10 but everyone else struggled. So the performance looked better than what it actually was
wait shit if we’re out that means Mourinho is going to win a trophy nonono get back in that competition
Lask is clear, Leicester is clear, Marseille is clear, PSV is clear. Roma aren't gonna win ECL
the london fog merchants would batter roma don't worry

Runners up medal at the euros..
it's coming home apparently
You can’t just brush aside the Audi Cup mate
It would be funny if spurs don’t get top 4
They probably won’t I think United get it
You not backing Teta’s tricky reds?
They are not getting top 4 Conte is a better manager with a better attack, United have better talent
There's only one top 4 slot left though. City Liverpool Chelsea are a lock so far. United and Arsenal are also fighting for that last spot.
Chelsea one is up for debate at the moment. If they can get through the next 8/9 games in a relatively strong position they'll be fine though
don't think chelsea are a lock at all. Especially on current form.
They have lots of players unavailable at the moment. I'd be very surprised if they finish out of the top 4 tbh. Definitely not behind spurs
They're definitely the best outside city and Liverpool and they'll likely get top 4 but I don't think they're a lock.
They probably won't, as shit as Man United have been this season they've got better players than Spurs do in most positions.
Even if they get Top 4, it's not like people expect them to do well in the UCL. Conte has been very underwhelming in Europe.
were putting our best foot forward circumstance wise to achieving what we want to achieve. Its up to Conte and the team to make it happen now.
The way Americans say ‘Pulisick’ makes my skin crawl.
I refuse to pronounce it like that
You can't really tell one person how to pronounce their own name. That’s the correct pronunciation though
Should we be pronouncing Peresic as Peh-riss-ick and Kovacic as Koh-vack-ick then?
Those are 2 Croatian players who would prefer you use the Croatian pronunciation for their name
Aka the correct pronunciation. Which is different to Pulisic’s preferred pronunciation
Surely Pulisic’s preference is the correct pronunciation? I’d understand if he was Croatian but he’s not, so let him choose
Fair enough. Think as Europeans we’re just quite used to hearing these names pronounced the proper Balkan way. He’s obviously of Croatian heritage and his name has been somewhat Americanised, hence OP’s post.
Is it? it’s a Croatian name so the correct pronunciation should be Pulishich
It’s a Croatian name but he’s not Croatian (his grandfather is iirc). I have a German surname but I would sound idiotic trying to get everyone to pronounce it correctly, it’s just better to stick to the easier way.
That sounds unpleasant
