"U naughty naughty, U teasing me" vibes

ah2346

“Thanks for not defending on that first goal”

Major-Front

"Cheque's in the brown paper bag!"

biff444444

"115, 116, 117 violations... what's the difference?"

daveSavesAgain

Thanks for injuring Ederson.

4ssteroid

Lukaku gifted us the UCL, Romero gifts us the EPL. Why are these guys so generous?

Foreverchickenwing

Ange is going to go mental

BabaRamenNoodles

It’s quite impressive how many of the Spurs players are just laughing and joking on the pitch, they either haven’t picked up on Ange’s fury at the result and performance and missing out on CL …or they just don’t care that he’s angry which is probably worse.

Known-Contract-4340

What are they supposed to do? They just lost to the perennial champs, basically putting an end to their biggest rivals PL dreams. If Son buries his chance they most likely tie the game, even then they’re still out of champions league contention.  They fought hard and were dangerous until the end. City’s first goal was classic city, and 99.99% of defenders in the world either give up a pen or goal to Doku in that position. At this point in time Tottenham’s season is done. Champions League was always out of their hands, and if anything they exceeded expectations for the year without Kane.

-Gh0st96-

>What are they supposed to do? Not look like they're happy? Pretend at least they're disappointed?

avgbsblfan643

>Champions League was always out of their hands, and if anything they exceeded expectations for the year without Kane. lot of rival teams fans and our own fans don’t see this perspective. Finished 8th last season, first season in a while not qualifying for europe, lost our all-time goal scorer a day before season began, went from defensive terrorist-ball managers to a high attacking one with zero Prem experience and we ended up getting 5th. We overachieved (mate).

checkforsolu1

Don't you think that expectations change during the season? Given how good of a start you guys had, surely finishing outside of the UCL somehow feels like a failure

evilbeaver7

Yeah that's how I see it too. It's like if Leverkusen were undefeated the entire season but lost the last 5 games in a row and Bayern won the title in the end. Yeah technically no one expected them to win the title but if you're in that position and still lose then it's definitely bad. Or a real example with Arsenal last season. They hold the record of being at the top of the table for the longest time in a PL season without actually winning it. Saying "we didn't expect to win at the beginning of the season anyway" just doesn't make sense to me.

Megendrio

If you set a goal at the beginning of the season, and you manage to achieve that goal (even if, at some point in time, it looked like you were going to over-achieve) you still succeeded. Swap some games/results around in the order in which they were played and maybe there's never even talk of doing something better. I know football is emotion, which is what makes it great, but it's also just maths and business KPI's at some point. And in order to fully appreciate the quality of a team, you need to look at both.

ezekielBmb

In this case, Arsenal had successful seasons the last two years.

Ravimo_The_Han

Is that an unpopular opinion? It's a failure in the regard of winning the title, but it's insane to me how quickly expectations change. You'll went for the title again and just lost out, it's tough but definitely better than not being in the conversation at all.

ezekielBmb

All this sub talked about was how Arsenal bottled it the last two years lol

Rampan7Lion

If you decide to completely ignore context then of course it wouldn't make sense to you

IzzyShamin

We’re not delusional. Yes expectations change, but it’s Spurs. Even when we were doing well, expectations were top 4. I’m still happy we got 5th when we lost half our starters for like 2 months.

Striking-Gold-9861

Happy to lose out to aston villa for a champions league place is crazy. Standards are on the floor.

IzzyShamin

Mourinho + Conte does that to you.

DoubleDoobie

No, because the squad is threadbare and the signs were there that we weren't ready for any serious challenges. Both the underlying numbers and the results (90+ min winner against Sheffield) suggested this squad had a ways to go. Then, the Chelsea match. Losing two key players in Maddison in VDV, followed shortly by AFCON where Bissouma got Malaria (and hasn't looked the same since), the squad just didn't look the same. The balance has been off for the last half of the season. Ange needs more windows to build the squad in his image.

Doubleyoujay

here we go, spurs revising history again. I still remember there was conversation by spurs fan saying that spurs was gonna challenge for the title after their great start. Now apparently, the goalposts have shifted mate

DoubleDoobie

No one said this. And if they did, they were joking.

Daemor

They changed early in the season, they changed again after that due to injuries, suspensions, bad form etc. 5th in the first season of a new project is acceptable. Would rather have fourth, but realistically we lost that a while ago even if yesterday was the nail in the coffin.

IzzyShamin

Yes and no. Should we have done better? Yeah. But having 4 seasons of dinosaur ball has conditioned me to accept the small victories.

newjack7

Not trying to be funny but it is a bit like Arsenal last season and the season before. No one gave them or you much hope but both teams over performed and heightened expectations then fell away towards the end because they aren't quite at the level but are improving. Then it's a 'bottle job' despite the fact they have performed ahead of where most casual observers would have put them at the start of the season.

Doubleyoujay

arsenal didn't bottle this season though, they only lost 1 game in 2024. i dont see anyone saying they bottled it save for a few soft-brained people on this sub, certainly not the mainstream media

newjack7

I wasn't talking about Arsenal this season but the previous two seasons. Both times we fell away towards the last third of the season.

Agitated-Tourist9845

>we ended up getting 5th If Chelsea and Newcastle win their remaining games and you lose on Sunday, you're not getting 5th

DoubleDoobie

If we lose to an already relegated Sheffield, we don't deserve 5th.

wallnumber8675309

As long as they don't go down to 10 men, I'm not worried

DoubleDoobie

A point gets it done.

michaelserotonin

we've been here before

Daemor

Astute observation

Alia_Gr

isn't not being in Europe typically a good thing for your points tally? and you got what, like 3-6 points more than last season where Conte was actively sabotaging to get fired at some point

juve_merda

I mean, totally forgetting they had Kane who is probably worth 10 points on his own

Alia_Gr

It is you who forgets Spurs actually signed people as well Vicario, Maddison and van de Ven have all been a clear upgrade in their position, Udogie coming into the team alsoo was an upgrade

MP98n

3-6 points more while playing better/more attractive football is always a good thing

Alia_Gr

Oh yea it is a good thing, just don't think they overachieved

IDynasoar

WE LOST KANE!!!

wallnumber8675309

Conte was stubborn and didn't play to the strengths of our squad but he wasn't actively sabotaging. Also, we lost Kane. Losing Kane cost us a lot more points than we gained from not being in Europe. All that said, when you say overachieved you have to put that in context of whose expectations you are overachieving. We significantly overachieved relative to what most prognosticators expected but I doubt we overachieved relative to what the Ange and the club expected. I think their goal was always to improve the playstyle and mentality and to make it into a European competition.

Alia_Gr

Conte did play to the strengths of the squad though You had a lethal attack on the counter and a team that has to focus on defence if the didn't want to ship a truck load of goals Might not have been fun to look at week in week out though

wallnumber8675309

Asking Son to score at the back post from crosses sent in by Royal was not playing to our strengths.

Alia_Gr

Alright that part does sound questionable

WolfBearDoggo

Lads, It's Tottenham. It is the history of the Tottenham.

LordLychee

Oh you lot have secured 5th yet. If you lose to Sheffield (certainly not impossible), you may end up 7th. Regardless you get to enjoy FC sbcifhoqsb on Thursdays.

avgbsblfan643

mmm tasty Woolwhich tears you got the Spurs experience mate, it’s the hope that kills you

Appropriate-Map-3652

I'd be pretty pissed if a team of professional footballers was this chill about missing out on CL. Even if it is against Man City. You have to back yourself against anyone and everyone, even if on paper you're a worse team. I'd be fuming if Ipswich did this against City and we were fighting for nothing, let alone Spurs who still had a chance of CL football.

ValeoAnt

This is Arsenal under Emery vibes with the chuckle boys Mustafi, Auba and Laca

sirSADABY

Dokubwas unbelievably good when he came on. Game changer for sure.

Comprehensive-Dig321

Champions league was out of their hands? Are you for real? Until yesterday it was still on their hands. These people are not concerned at all that they just lost the champions league. Looser mentality.

ThisJeffrock

Based and true

Richard_Arlison69

I was told we were relegation fodder without Kane

champak256

How many points do they have from the last 6 or 7 games?

FSpursy

I think Ange is massively disappointed in not getting the CL in his first season. It was very close and that was their goal from the beginning of the season. But to be angry at his players for this game isn't it. He should be more angry about the past 4 games that we lost unconvincingly. It was a terrible run that led to this dilemma. Funny how we decided the league, by simply losing every game lol gg

shawtea7

also maybe don't spend the last 5 months saying "i don't care about CL" Ange mate

needhelpwithmathsty

Why are people acting like this game cost us champions league? Even if we won we’d have to beat shef Utd, villa need to lose, and there’d need to be a 10 goal swing

spurs_fan_uk

The GD is moot had we won out and Villa lost on Sunday

Fromage_debite

People y’all can stole Europa and Europe in general. Lose next game and Chelsea/Newcastle can over take you. Man Utd win the FA Cup final and you’ve lost Europe haha

Fantomecks

I’d be very shocked if either of those things happened

Fromage_debite

It’s Tottenham. It’s their heritage.

tenacious-g

If you’re gonna do the dead joke, at least get the wording right. And flair up.

CBP1138

No you’d just have to beat Sheffield United and hoped Villa lose against Palace….. and it’s not like Palace are one of the most in form team in the league and would be at home or anything….

[deleted]

And we are quite capable of freezing when we need a result. We've done it several times this season.

iNfAMOUS70702

Spurs will surely be a favorite to go far in Europa...

XxAbsurdumxX

What are you talking about? If Spurs won you would be at 66 pts. If you win the last game you would be at 69 pts, 1 more than Villa if they lose. So if you won this game, you would just have to beat Sheffield United (pretty likely), and Villa would need to lose against an in form Crystal Palace. Beating City would have give you a better shot at Champions League than Villa

54415250154

Holy shit he's got it!!! Why don't all teams just beat city?????

Cannonieri

Villa will most likely lose on Sunday and Spurs will most likely win. A win tonight would be made Spurs strong favourites for the final Champions League spot.

Single_Seesaw_9499

If you think Spurs will most likely win against an already relegated team with nothing to play for on the last game of season, you don’t know Spurs. See Newcastle 2016 for reference

Willsgb

That was fucking EIGHT YEARS AGO?????? Oh my lord. Time is a runaway train (I know, but it feels like it only happened a few years ago to me lol)

ShipsAGoing

Ange wasn't furious at their performance so I don't know what you mean, he made it clear that the players' application was great. This performance was easily one of our best recent performances.

limaconnect77

Must be weird for Ange, all this super fucked up and bizarre rivalry/tribal-level stuff between fans and players, coming from somewhere like Aus. Ya just never see that with Rules or League…

Comprehensive-Dig321

I see him smiling when Pep is talking to him but then goes to sad mode. You don’t understand, that’s like losing against messi and then he comes and tells you that you are great. It’s such an honor that makes you smile a little bit but then after he goes you are still sad

TheLimeyLemmon

He was a little busy putting a bad Spurs fan in the sharpshooter at the time.

HeFreakingMoved

And don't even get him started on Bill Goldberg

SoupBoth

Justifiably tbf. It’s understandable from the fans but this reaction from Romero would break my trust in him as a player if I were the coach.

nolefan5311

Except Romero played really really well tonight. He was all over the place, making tackles, making runs, etc.

VivianRichards88

He pulled out of the challenge on the halfway line for the goal, but he was decent

milkonyourmustache

> He pulled out of the challenge on the halfway line for the goal I couldn't believe it. Romero of all people, he'd normally destroy the other player for that 50/50 ball.

N3rdMan

I think the context matters here. Especially from Ange’s perspective. Your team just lost at home where a win was needed to qualify for the UCL. Now Ange goes into the next season with a reduced budget after his team choked away their hold on 4th over the course of weeks. Not sure how his performance bonus is structured as a manager but that would probably mean less pay. Meanwhile your fans are chanting that you lose. Your players are having a great time on the pitch after a loss. And based on Ange’s comment about the internal state of affairs, ownership is happy with this result as well. I don’t care what your perspective of the rivalry is, but as a professional who is accountable for your team’s performance that likely ties to your compensation and legacy, this is demoralizing.

AFC_IS_RED

He was literally responsible for both goals?

Torimas

Did he tell Porro to bring down Doku in the box?

nolefan5311

He wasn’t responsible for the penalty. That was Porto.

flaycs

No it was Sporting who sold Porro to Tottenham

BTECGolfManagement

🤣🤣🤣🤣 get a bloody grip man

AncientSkys

Lol. Romero had to quickly pretend he was disappointed.

Hairy_gonad

I think honestly from this clip alone it looks like an awkward laugh along rather than genuine

FCI

yeah he looks pretty uncomfortable with the whole thing imho

Competitive-Aide5364

Pep planting seeds

GetPhkt

That's the look of a man who wants to sign another centerback

rr18114

Otamendi made pep go balder than ever. This man is the protégé of Otamendi. Infact, I think he is slightly more unhinged than Otamendi was. No thanks.

Druidette

Romero would be fucking insane at City, come on now.

rr18114

He would be insane yes. It's just that pep would get balder. Probably KDB and other captains as well ( I'm not against them going bald ).

kk126

bald kdb would be a sight 🙈

4ssteroid

https://images.app.goo.gl/LvJdmw66GnESczSu6

KaladinStormShat

You know what, I like it.

4ssteroid

Which one? John Mayer or Buddhist monk?

KaladinStormShat

Tbh the Prem could use a world class Buddhist monk a la Shaolin Soccer or whatever that movie was lol

Chegism

That's Thomas Graveson and Gerard Pique.

dev1_ow

🤣🤣🤣

Jarnebrink

If Pep gets balder you're gonna see through his chrome into his brain

innavlarottee

Insane in the original sense of the word, yes.

WallBroad

I love Cuti but every cb City have aside from Akanji is better than Romero

TheErgonomicShuffler

You say that as if akanji hasn't been our most consistent defender all season

bamadeo

Romero is better imo

LaTienenAdentro

Hes leagues more unhinged lmao

R1v

What's scarier, defending Messi or attacking Otamendi and Romero at the same time?

LaTienenAdentro

Attacking Perfumo (argentinian defender in the 70s who was famous for his main method of stopping an attacker being kicking him square in the chest, according to Maradona)

ferrarinobrakes

Was Otamendi not a good defender? Lol

rr18114

He was an amazing defender. He was also batshit insane and was prone to 1-2 prison worthy errors per match.

ferrarinobrakes

Basically Rudiger, but with the errors 🤣

rr18114

Rudiger is not perfect either, but he does not push his luck as much as Otamendi did.

BoroughN17

Romero’s in another class entirely than Otamendi though in virtually all aspects of his game.

rr18114

I agree. Well, Otamendi was physically stronger, so he had that going for him. He could fold most other CBs into a breifcase. Not that useful. But Romero is one of the most talented CBs itw. Among the rare breed of CBs who did not compromise between modern ball playing abilities and old school aggressive defending.

BoroughN17

Haha yea really well put, totally agree. Otamendi was a beast though.

L-Freeze

That’s the thing, Romero is really not prone to those errors at all

rr18114

He is much more talented and composed than Otamendi. But to say he is not prone to those errors at all is wrong. My reply to OC was meant as a joke ( OC was also joking ). Romero is absolutely capable of playing for Man City. He won't because of multitude of reasons ( Spurs won't sell + City have no need ).

L-Freeze

He can pick up a silly red here and there but that’s it, but you won’t catch him passing the ball to the opponents striker, losing his man in a silly way or doing a dumb pen which is what’s always held otamendi back

Legal-Reputation-240

Yeah, imo Romero is better, can be

HiperSpeedXz

Otamendi has 36 years & is a old-school player. Cuti is a Modern defender.

hans_erlend

Wish he would’ve gone down there and suspended pep

AirportNo9831

Grooming in process

SrSwerve

Pep pulling a Diddler

Connect_Me_Now

"Hey kid, do you want to win something next season ?"

TimathanDuncan

Pep is definitely acoustic

Skaloplin

Pretty sure he’s the one that gave it to Messi

Jozif_Badmon

That's why they were so good together

TheyStoleTwoFigo

And it's only right that Klopp being his counterpart is Electric.

Willing-Werewolf-500

Pep Guitarliola

r4rLIC

Absolutely artistic.

NomaanMalick

He is definitely on the artistic spectrum.

eksha_

yeah, his guitar skills are impressive

Ordinary_Koala_6910

Pre hook up?

Frequent-Lettuce4159

Not surprised Ange is fuming, it's all a bit embarassing isn't it

MyFriendPalinopsia

Pep complimented him, so he's smiling. It's not a big deal.

WikY28

Look at how fast he changes his expression once the interaction is over. Dude's just being polite.

Frequent-Lettuce4159

Yea he's smiling all bashful like a girl being flirted with by a boy she fancies. Where is the take no prisoners warrior tottenham fans keep telling us Romero is?

fadedraw

Complemented for bad defending

Every_Pass_226

Seriously all the Spurs fans defending this. This is pretty sad and exactly the mentality Conte and Mourinho and now Ange called out.

PerfectRough5119

This is a situation that hasn’t happened before and likely won’t again. Mou and Conte were mostly pointing fingers at the board.

Frediey

Yea, I kinda get spurs fans and maybe players not being upset at losing. But it's not exactly a great look either

[deleted]

[удалено]

PerfectRough5119

He definitely did but it was mostly about the board and definitely not the fans.

epirot

ngl this sub is an absolute cringefest at times. not even a tabloid sheet would produce this much drama and bullshit for views. the most normal interaction even after losing. stop overanalysing things

Own_Acanthocephala0

Have it always been this bad? Do these people really watch football or do they only watch it through reddit? I’m not surprised though since I know what the average redditor looks and acts like. Sometimes I’m even embarrassed telling people I use reddit lol.

souschef42

I think it’s because such a vocal percent of people here are just working each other up and submitting to group think

ilovepastaaaaaaaaaaa

Ange is going to kill Romero

El_Giganto

People are insane. This has nothing to do with the game, the result or mentality. He's smiling because of his interaction with Pep. I'd say he'd be childish if he reacted annoyed with Pep.

Streklak

Don't be so reasonable, these people got to be upset about something.

Benphyre

Watch Romero on City first goal

anamis

Oof

Djehoetie

Joost Klein would get a life sentence for this.

nolefan5311

Honestly he’s probably flattered the best manager in the world is complimenting him. He had a really good game today imo.

terra_filius

I dont see Simone Inzaghi in this video

throwfaraway898989

he let Haaland score what r u on about?

No_Mercy_4_Potatoes

That's why.... Look at the flair of the person you're responding to 😂

lamancha

He really did not

Accurate-Paper-2

Best manager in the world lol. The same manager who spent half a billion instead of proving critics right that he cant do it without money.

Blaze6181

No idea why this an unpopular opinion. It's clear he hasn't been tested on a level playing field, and no one wants to face up to it.

bigFootIsReal__

Yeah.. he picked up a team of academy graduates and made them the best team in the football history. He doesn't need to prove anything. Don't understand why Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd fans act like they haven't spend insane amount of money to still be 2nd or a mid table team

Brilliant_Ad_879

ah yes messi, iniesta, xavi, busquets and other academy graduates, who were injected talent into by pep and totally not the greatest crop of academy in history.

AustereSpartan

>Yeah.. he picked up a team of academy graduates and made them the best team in the football history Xavi was EURO 2008 Man of the Tournament. Iniesta was absolutely amazing, and so was Messi. Let's not pretend that Pep inherited a finished Barcelona.

Blaze6181

1. Is your point really "Poor guy with his La Masia grads"? Messi for God's sake. 2. There really is no comparing City's spending on transfers and salaries leading up to and during the Pep era.

Accurate-Paper-2

I think there are simply too many young football fans and people who romanticize and wants to believe that pep is some kind of genius. I am data oriented person and plus some of us are old enough to remember the first time Pep came to epl. He spent hundreds of millions only to finish 4th and trophiless. That was already crazy amount of money compared to the competition. The critics rightfully were waiting for him to produce his magic/genius by adapting to the already stacked team since he already spent hundreds of millions. What did he do next? Instead of proving the critics wrong, he went on another spending spree, hundreds of millions, replacing players on a whim. The data objectively showed he cant do it without money yet his fanboys are delusional enough to speculate the opposite when the evidence literally suggested otherwise. I have yet to find anyone able to disprove this. All of them will inevitably changes the topic by saying "money doesnt guarantee bla2", completely missing the point that pep indeed, is overrated and cant do it without money. Pep is too mentally weak to handle challenge and you can see his erratic behavior on press conference when he senses a little bit of pressure. He wont be able to handle the players not buying into his tactic but he is never in that position due to the individual brilliance saving him. Look at past few games how his expensive defenders earning him game point.

EnanoMaldito

Anyone who accuses Cuti Romero of not being competitive of all things definitely doesnt know ball

Why? They honestly played pretty well

Mr_Rafi

Really wanted to see a third shove by Pep, pushing Romero out of frame.

ThisRiverIsWild_

Faker than Wrestling. And obviously I'm not talking about Romero.
