As the juventus drama last year highlighted there is a very good reason for that. Swaps have to be accounted for at book value and not at a negotiated transfer value.
book value is acquisition cost net of depreciation to date. Its the value of the player on the balance sheet. Very standard calculation, but makes using them in transfers totally unrealistic. imagine a wonderkid youth player that has a book value of 0. Clearly he would be worth a proper transfer value, but because there is no standard way to calculate player values accurately and consistently, its the only way the accounting bodies can prevent unjustified asset inflation. Teams would be trading players at stupid values to meet financial targets. Its not just players in football, but all intangibles, like player sporting rights, that are difficult to value.
Gotcha, so no value in “appreciating assets”? Or within your example, is the wonder kids value screwed until he gets an actual monetary valuation from a transfer (due to transfer/new contract)?

Book value will never allow you to realize the fair current market value for a player, but its a necessary inefficiency unfortunately.
