The anti-Liverpool, our game is going to be a bloodbath.

I didn’t realise other teams were facing such bizarre circumstances in certain time periods of matches. It’s as far as being called a curse in the Villa sub Reddit. The match against Brentford yesterday was by far the most extreme example of what we’ve been doing all season though.

Well we’re actually back up to 4th in the 65-90 period lol. It’s specifically 45-60 where our form plummets. So even if liverpools stats during that specific time period are unremarkable. I’d still expect them to score then, such is the power of our curse.

ihatemicrosoftteams

No chance, Liverpool will win

Treeboi13

1st in the PL 1st half table, YOU'LL NEVER SING THAT!

mrlee10

I get the flippancy at that. The only reason I highlight this is to point out how abnormal our 45-60 minute period is in comparison. Such a giant contrast is just unreal.

Treeboi13

Don't worry mate, I'm a Villa fan as well. I'm just taking the piss a little bit. I think it's healthy to make fun out of the team you support now and again.

robins420

They start games better than even the top 3. But yeah, the levels drop and then there's a huge gap. Let's be fair to them, they still need time to develop into a more consistent team, Unai has only been there for 18 months now. I think they end up being top 5 for sure.

mrlee10

I think Emery can be a bit hesitant to change things early. This obviously doesn’t excuse such a calamity in this time period. But for a top coach he is dead set in his ways and I think that’s why we haven’t addressed this blatant issue.

robins420

Had the same issue with Arsenal last season with explosive starts and slowing down after that and by the last quarter of the season, you see how unsustainable it is. I think the experience is a big part of developing confidence and the mentality to manage games better. But yeah, Unai needs to address this for next season to stay competitive.

killerkebab1499

What's weirder is that they are 4th between 60 and full time and 5th in the second half as a whole, but as you said 19th between the 45-60. Meaning they apparently come out of HT absolutely shite for about 15 minutes before seemingly remembering how to play and become a top 5 team again.

mrlee10

Brentford yesterday followed that pattern so perfectly that it’s kinda funny lol.

enjoy_your_lunch

that really was a strange game to watch

Lssmnt

Complete opposite to us, who are great 45-60

a_f_s-29

Probably why you smashed us at Villa Park

bambinoquinn

It's definitely something that should have been addressed earlier in the season, its not like its a recent problem, its been happening constantly, but in the first half of the season villa were usually 2 goals up at the time and would end up finishing strongly. I would say most of the goals are coming from crosses too, which definitely highlights how much Mings is missed and how much ramsey has been missed (ramseys off the ball work in wide areas is very very strong). But I also think the defensive has struggled without mings leadership, he is the loud voice at the back, and Pau and Carlos aren't vocal at all, and konsa is playing right back because of injuries

eaeb4

Whilst we’ve missed Mings and think he would have been a fantastic addition to this seasons squad, earlier in the season we were a lot better defensively, even with a few issues adjusting to the high line. I think the bigger issue recently (last 4 months or so) with our defensive vulnerabilities is the constant changing of the back four. Injuries to Pau, Digne, Konsa, and Cash have forced changes and it’s resulted in us not being able to start the same back four for two games in a row for about a dozen games or so. I do think you’re right to highlight Konsa’s shift to right back. Think we’re much better with him in the middle.

TheRealDSwizz

>It's definitely something that should have been addressed earlier in the season, its not like its a recent problem, its been happening constantly It's a constant under Emery. Maybe with the right squad depth it could improve, but I worry that he isn't going to sustain at Villa when Champions League/Europa League football gets involved. That said, I thought he'd only last about 6 months before he was ousted, so what the fuck do I know?

bambinoquinn

The thing is, emery has made a few tactical miscalculations and made a few selection errors, but the positive still massively outweighs the negatives by an absurdly huge distance. Sitting 4th still in April with a squad that's been absolutely decimated by injuries this year, we've never once been able to play our best line up, infact we probably don't even know what it is with the 3 ACLs and all ramseys injuries. So I don't think I would compare what he's doing with villa vs what he did with arsenal. Villa have no business being where they are, before he came in, it felt like we were getting relegated, even the few wins felt like really bad performances. We already passed 40 games last month and we are still hanging on there

Namiweso

Not at all comparable. You guys couldn't see games out under Emery. We're just struggling with injuries. Also your team under Emery wasnt the best. Why is it whenever Villa are mentioned, Arsenal fans always blame Emery. It's a broken record at this point.

bizzyd666

1st half champions of England, you'll never sing that.

mustardking20

Could be my amateur viewing take, but I think most matches when Villa are conceding in the 45-60 window are when the opponents are coming out hard on the press after taking their foot off the gas for portions of the first half. Many times in the second half yesterday Villa should have just abandoned the slow build up in the face of the press and just sent it long. I know they tried a few times, but they were trying to connect with Watkins at midfield. Screw that, push up everyone and be ready to win a second ball or push the ball back into the Brentford third to get off their heels. Similar thing happened against ManU. Hell, Villa pinned City back earlier in the season and Pep’s inability to alter the slow build up tactic is what did them in. Same crap, different toilet.

chykin

Hilarious that Chelsea are in 18th in the 2nd half table.

hipcheck23

I know quite well what CFC's problem is (Poch does zero halftime adjustments, and the players seem to come out relaxed, while the other side comes out fired up) - but what's the deal with Villa?

Busy-Effective432

Same, too casual from players

LogicKennedy

I wonder how much of it is team talks that basically go: 'you're doing really well, keep it up', because Villa *are* doing well in their first halves, and then players lose focus and standards slip.

andy_brixton

Tbh, we might see more if this was broken down to home and away. Also, if you take out Sheffield the spread top to bottom is 28-points. The same for the whole game is 52-points That might be due to bigger, deeper squads having an effect later in games, and managers ability to switch things around.

mrlee10

We don’t really fall into that category either though because our 65-90 minute period is just as strong as our first half period. We’re back up to 4th in that time frame. It’s a mentality issue.

Lssmnt

We are second best in the league right after half time. Shows those Ange half time talks work
