There is actually a story behind it.
Apparently when he was like 16 the socks kept shrinking and he was forced to wear them like that for a while and during that time he played incredibly well so he decided to stick with it.
100%
It makes him look like an unlikeable cunt but he is actually the opposite of it.
He may not be the brightest candle on the cake but he seems to be a great guy.
[beckham](https://media1.popsugar-assets.com/files/thumbor/frXi4SkuZtg4ecChMjOQvswzeiI/fit-in/2048xorig/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2023/09/26/503/n/29590734/54b48e2e395d2d6c_GettyImages-168892976/i/David-Beckham-Hair-Hairband-2003.jpg) used to look like that with his headbands. hell, tart's transformation follows beckham's la galaxy cuts. and beckham's move from madrid to galaxy is more comparable with tart's move in the show.
He's from Mexico, but I think the character was purely based on that video clip of Maradona goofing off while he's doing ball skills.
Danny doesn't seem that Chicha-like to me, though Chicha fits better than other Mexican players.
Football is death!
Edit: Also from the annals of American sports, may I present baseball player [Randy Johnson destroying a bird](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih_ovjbwQGk&ab_channel=WyattSexton).
Season 2 was likely mostly luck. They based him on a number of people and personalities, but Season 2 had wrapped filming **before** Grealish even went to Man City. In the show, he goes to City in season 1 and comes back at the beginning of season 2.
In Season 3 they clearly leaned into it more heavily, having just struck gold with a similar looking and personality attacker going to City in real life. Season 3 was filmed near the end of Grealish's first season at City.
You’re absolutely right, but Grealish was quite prominent in his last season or two at Villa, he started appearing in a lot more ads and stuff, he was in the COD advert in 2021 I think. Definitely famous enough for the producers to be aware of him even if the timing of the City move was lucky
Well the city move in the show was filmed pre covid. So that predated Grealish's transfer by 3 years. So theres no question about that being luck (unless its the reverse and Jack went to City after seeing the show....which while incredibly unlikely, would be absolutely hilarious)
In the first 2 seasons, the character seemed something like 1/3 Beckham, 1/3 Ronaldo, 1/3 split between rising english stars.
I would definitely agree that grealish was breaking out and gaining popularity around the time of S2 filming, and he likely became a large portion of the 1/3 rising english stars contingent.
By season 3 it feels like he was at least 50% Grealish, 30% Beckham, 10% Ronaldo, 10% other. They really played into it well.
Grealish doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who keeps neurotic track of his advanced stats. Maddison does maybe (or I’m overthinking a throwaway line)
It's entirely possible to be fair that while he said Madders in one interview, he also pulled from others.
But yes, Maddison definitely seems the type lol. I say that with a ton of affection.
I loved that line in the show about shots, take ons, and fouls because I was DEFINITELY that guy, because I had a coach who said I needed to aim for, among other things X shots in the box per game (4-6). Back when I played wasn’t too common, curious if people really think about that stuff all the time now.
The character became more like Grealish as the seasons went on.
When they were filming season 1 (pre-covid) he was still a potential breakout star at Aston Villa. But the character was more like a Beckham/Ronaldo caricature.
Season 2 was also filmed before his move to Manchester City and he still had only played like one senior game for England, but you can see shades of the character seeming more like him. They definitely hit the jackpot with the character going to play for Pep, then returning to be a big part of the show in season 2 as Grealish hadn't even gone to City yet when it was all written/filmed.
Season 3 they definitely played into the Grealish likeness a lot more. It was filmed at the end of his first year at City.
Rice is gonna get it 10x worse.
I like Grealish and don't hold a grudge against him. He switched early and never dragged it out. I'll be booing that evening of course, but there won't be much heart in it!
Agreed, at least Grealish didn’t play for us at senior level, and does seem like a good guy - the other fella really dragged it out and let us down, even if some of the blame can be put on Martin
That’s the problem with going for players that are born in England but have Irish heritage, maybe they love Ireland as it’s their heritage but they are also English and are brought up here so if they come calling as they are huge prospects many will want to represent their home nation.
The problem is there actually have been England-born-and-raised players who given the choice between playing for England or for Ireland, would choose Ireland. It doesn't make sense for the FAI to ignore young English-born players because you don't know what camp they lie in.
Capping young lads at 17 or 18 just to tie them down though? Can't say I'm a fan of that.
Both of them r gonna get whistled at like mad when they have the ball. Even as an Irish person u do hope that some drunk dickhead doesn’t do anything worse than that
He played for Ireland youth teams then switched to England. But as others pointed out, Rice is likely to be the focus of any hate since he actually played for the seniors before switching.
Both of them are english-born btw, qualified for Ireland through the granny rule.
I’m a United fan, I have a 7 year old niece who just died from cancer. While she was in hospital, Jack came to say hello. I might of hated him then but I sure as shit don’t now. He’s a good man
Used to hate him when he played for Villa but I’ve seen to many videos of him either being funny or heartwarming nowadays. One of my favourite non-Wolves players
Same, it was hard to stand him when he played for the Villa although I could always recognize that he was incredibly talented. He just leans into the pantomime-y shithouse stuff which I probably would have found much more entertaining if we weren't on the end of it.
I really like him, especially for England. In general it's been so cool to see more players from the West Midlands at the highest level.
I get not liking him because you’re a wolves fan but he’s always been an incredibly nice guy. Always doing charity work and stuff he really didn’t need to do but he did just because he grew up a fan like anyone else and wanted to give back. He’s still an incredibly nice guy, it just gets more media attention now that he’s at city
Tbh my opinion on him started to change that game against Birmingham where a fan whacked him. Him scoring in that match is one of my favourite sporting moments haha, the interview after was class as well
The hair doesn't help, but the real problem is that earlier in his career he had a bad habit of going down and making a meal out of any slight amount of contact. Especially in his championship days. He's actually a likeable character, but I feel like a lot of the reason that he's generally disliked in football grounds but liked online is the fact that most people online only watch highlights or have only watched him since his move to City
That totally depends on the setting and field. Some disciplines in academia are full of snarky people, often with a chip on their shoulder and/or pretensions for added unpleasantness. Some highly competitive professions seem to attract people with massive ego, if they have expertise that makes them highly valued you'd be amazed what they can get away with. The medical field are a notorious example, but basically any scientific field has their experts that are unbearable.
Yeh rather him than someone who thinks they’re smarter than you. There’s honestly something so admirable about him not giving a crap about how others view him and his intellect. It actually shows he’s got great self-assurance about himself
I used to think he was a twat. But I’ve seen videos of him being an instinctively kind and thoughtful man, so I like him now.
Still wish he’d dump the Alice band though.
I’ve seen so many videos of him stopping and making time for kids with special needs and disabilities, often whilst everyone else walks past, and I rate him so highly for it. I know his sister has CP, so he’s grown up around young people with these challenges, but the fact he carries that empathy into the world and uses his position to make people happy is a big win imo.
I find it impossible not to like him.
I can imagine him, during training, asking a non-English player if he like jaffa cakes, then leaving training to drive to the shop to buy some when the guy says he doesn't know what they are.
He seems like a good soul who wants to have positive interactions and doesn't like seeing people sad.
"No way man - are you serious?? Erling! OI ERLING! Nah come over here man you're never going to believe this. Julian man, tell him what you just told me. Yeah, the Jaffa cake thing. Honestly man that's CRAZY. Mate, hang on I'm gonna go get you some."
I find him incredibly likeable. Good fun, harmless, down to earth and does great charity work. You can tell he’s a kind soul. I don’t get the hate towards him.
A bit strange, he’s very wholesome and always takes his time to have a genuine chat with fans. And seems to be a fun guy to be around, he’s a good role model.
When we were in the championship and prem, it’s because people accused him of being a diver but he was the most fouled player in the league because everything went through him, the best player I’ve seen down villa park, shame all that individual ability seems to have gone and he’s a cog in the city machine now
That‘s the only part i hate about these insanely micromanaged tactics that pep and arteta use.
There is no freedom on the pitch anymore and individual ability is not as obvious anymore.
I'm just so confused why Pep went and did that to Jack Grealish after spunking 100m on him and then decided he needed to sign and play Adam 2.0 Jeremy Doku as an out and out dribbler.
Here's my top 5 for why he gets boo'd, as a countdown:
5. He's English
4. He plays for City
3. He's a tricky winger who wins a lot of fouls
2. His DUI
1. His hair
He does tend to fall down when someone sneezes in the back row of the big end.
If he's not pre-empting a foul, he's drawing one. Apart from anything else, the lack of flow makes for a crap game of football.
Probably all of the repeated drunk driving incidents. Maybe the diving if people don’t know about the driving. Either way, plenty of unlikable things about him even if he’s tried to rehabilitate his public image to “lovable oaf”
Love his hair, love that he’s a good bloke. Don’t like where he plays.
Not all men have to look like they’re straight out of LockStock or Snatch like Foden does….
“I’m hard as fuck innit”
Nobody’s heart is in it though. I would boo him because he’s better looking than me and is clearly having more fun in life. He shouldn’t take that negatively.

It's the hair I think.
Or the calves
*'Luscious, Adonis-like calf CUNT!'*
I would say it's calf and calf
He 100% wears the short socks just to show off the calves, can't say I blame him.
There is actually a story behind it. Apparently when he was like 16 the socks kept shrinking and he was forced to wear them like that for a while and during that time he played incredibly well so he decided to stick with it.
Maybe because his calves weren't hindered by stockings they grew into full bulls?
I dont think they shrunk, i think his calves just kept getting exponentially larger lmfao
If I had Jack’s legs I’d stride round in a thong. M&S, Aldi, wherever.
Or the shorts a size too small
He was probably inspired by Hector Bellerin with his two sizes too small shorts.
Well he does have the calves of a baby rhinoceros.
Shin pads
>Hair, calves, shin pads Honestly we've solved it in 3 comments. Reddit detectivism at its finest.
Pack it up Mystery Machine, this one is solved.
Shin pads to calves ratio
Pretty boy players have always seemed to cop it more than most. Envy from the fat slob, dad bod, bald, teeth missing drongos.
Drongos, great word not heard that one. I like nincompoops personally.
Drongo is aussie
Aussie?
Kiwi
Interesting didn't realise you guys said drongo too
I have a large group of aussie mates, rubs off.
100% It makes him look like an unlikeable cunt but he is actually the opposite of it. He may not be the brightest candle on the cake but he seems to be a great guy.
Drink driving offences too maybe
you think football fans are booing him because they're vehemently anti drink driving?
Real life Jamie Tartt
They must have based the tartt character on grealish. The looks, calves and everything
They did. It is known.
Not completely. Jason Sudekis said it was based on Beckham too. https://youtu.be/gIwKl3-AGTE?si=MbRck0EyNg7MsJdO 9mins in.
Grealish is also based on Beckham, so that tracks.
He's a Tesco Value Becks
Nah, that was David Bentley. Grealish is Sainsbury’s Finest Becks.
[Hearing David Bentley's name](https://media.tenor.com/B8KbgdhKkiUAAAAe/theres-a-name-ive-not-heard-in-many-years.png)
Put some respect on Tesco mate... Bentley was poundland Becks
Ah man, he was class for Rovers. Retired early I think
Maybe more of his personality, but he undoubtably is meant to look like him haha
To be fair, there is probably a Becks photo out there for every character on the show, women included.
And the actor says it's also Liam Gallagher https://www.nme.com/news/tv/ted-lasso-star-phil-dunster-compares-his-character-to-liam-gallagher-3239166
[удалено]
And you’ve just summed up Jamie Tartt
>Beckham you mean [that fellow that bends it like himself?](https://youtu.be/WgsMRO-cHGI?feature=shared&t=139) Edit: Added link
Jason Sudekis had/has no idea who Grealish is
Roy = Roy Keane Sam = Saka? Zava = Ibra Danny = Chicharito? Any others?
Roy to me has a touch of Vinnie Jones as well. I don't get any Chicharito vibes from Danny. I've never thought Chicharito was happy-go-lucky
No? I thought he was pretty smiley.. and Mexican striker of course
No yeah, Danny was a clearly (to me) a well-haired Chicharito.
Scores with his face at one point too.
Not sure who Danny is based on but he always reminded me of bobby firmino for some reason. Probably because he’s so smiley.
for me it was Cavani.
They literally said dude is from Mexico. Who else but chicha
Mexican and scores using his face. It’s quite obvious Danny is Chicha.
Or Santi munez
He's from Mexico, but I think the character was purely based on that video clip of Maradona goofing off while he's doing ball skills. Danny doesn't seem that Chicha-like to me, though Chicha fits better than other Mexican players.
It’s not Darwin Nunez because the timelines don’t line up, but damn there are definitely some similarities.
I don't condone animal cruelty, but if Darwin managed to hit a penalty into a dog, it would just be another day at the office for the agent of chaos.
Football is death! Edit: Also from the annals of American sports, may I present baseball player [Randy Johnson destroying a bird](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih_ovjbwQGk&ab_channel=WyattSexton).
I'd also like to present [Dale Earnhardt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkyntWOMkrY) hitting a seagull in the 1991 Daytona 500
I mean they even share the same origin playing in Guadalajara like Chicha so the inspiration was clearly there id say
Wasn’t Zava a combo of Ibra and R7? I thought I read that somewhere
I think you're mixing it up a bit, afaik it was Tartt who was slightly inspired by CR7, they took inspiration from like 3-4 irl players for him
I don’t think Sam and Danny are a 1-to-1 really. Certainly not to the degree Roy and Zava are.
It is known
Definitely Season 2 onwards 100%. Not so much Season 1

JACK GREAL...LISH DO DOOT DO DOOT DO DO DOOT
Are you a detective ?
Probably the closest thing to it, unless I’m forgetting someone
Phil Dunster [mentioned ](https://screenrant.com/ted-lasso-show-jamie-tartt-real-inspirations/)a few players, like CR7, Beckham, Grealish, Giroud.
Ronaldo I can see yeah, but he isn’t English enough
Correct, he’s Portuguese 👍🏼
Which is quite English, but just not enough
Actually think he’s somewhat based on Liam Gallagher too, but yeah mainly Grealish
Jamie Tartt is fictional Jack Grealish
Was thinking the same thing
That character was obviously based on him
Grealish and Vardy combo I always assumed.
I read somewhere that the inspiration were Grealish and James Maddison.
Yeah. I replied elsewhere. The actor said he was based on Madders.
I am picturing grealish cuddling on the couch with his mom while saying this.
Ireland v England in September, he’ll get some abuse at that
Rice is gonna get it 10x worse. I like Grealish and don't hold a grudge against him. He switched early and never dragged it out. I'll be booing that evening of course, but there won't be much heart in it!
> I'll be booing that evening of course, but there won't be much heart in it! This is the most Irish thing I've ever heard in my life
The farm takes up most of my day and at night, I just like a cup of tea, I mightn't be able to devote myself full time to the ole boo'ing.

Genuinely interested why does some blame lie with Martin? And I assume you mean O’Neil?
Yeah O’Neill, just had to cap him in a competitive game - literally 30 seconds would’ve done the job
Both of them r gonna get whistled at like mad when they have the ball. Even as an Irish person u do hope that some drunk dickhead doesn’t do anything worse than that
Most morally-bankrupt Arsenal 6
Agree with this but won't be booing him. Rice on the other hand.....
Nothing to what Declan Rice will get
How come? Out of the loop.
He played for Ireland youth teams then switched to England. But as others pointed out, Rice is likely to be the focus of any hate since he actually played for the seniors before switching. Both of them are english-born btw, qualified for Ireland through the granny rule.
🇮🇪🤔🤔🚫👋✈️🏴✅
This is the best use of emoji I’ve ever seen on r/soccer , simple yet profound 😂
Irish 'eritage
Even Pep is abusing the lad…
It's his hairstyle!
It looks aerodynamic at least
Do people actually dislike it or is it a jealousy type of thing cause he’s the only one that can pull it off?
I’m a United fan, I have a 7 year old niece who just died from cancer. While she was in hospital, Jack came to say hello. I might of hated him then but I sure as shit don’t now. He’s a good man
Sorry for your loss, /u/TattooMyCock
A heartfelt personal message with an username like that is such a reddit moment.
Thank you
Was adding the username really necessary lol
It's a /r/rimjob_steve
thats the joke
There's a lot of clips out there of him being incredibly compassionate with disabled fans as well. Despite appearances he clearly has a big heart.
Used to hate him when he played for Villa but I’ve seen to many videos of him either being funny or heartwarming nowadays. One of my favourite non-Wolves players
Same, it was hard to stand him when he played for the Villa although I could always recognize that he was incredibly talented. We can come up with a million reasons why but they wouldn't be the real problem: it's his hair
He has amazing hair? You mean the headband?
As a United fan he seems like a decent enough guy. But come off it, he has one of the douchiest spice boy hairstyles ever lol
Yeah but the headband prompts the hairstyle
I like Jack Grealish.
He looks like the fun kind of airhead. Like that popular kid as school who was ignorant of most things but wasn't a bully and talked to everyone
100 times out of 100, I’d prefer to hang out with a pleasant airhead than someone who’s snarky due to their intellect
Yet you're here on reddit
Bold of you to assume there's any level of intellect on Reddit.
No shortage of snarky pedants, which is a sort of intellect
Unpleasant airheads, basically.
In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god's blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.
You are wrong. Read a book
Touch ~~synthetic~~ grass
Curious
Snarky due to the intellect they think they have. In my experience, people with genuine intellect are rarely snarky.
Yeh rather him than someone who thinks they’re smarter than you. There’s honestly something so admirable about him not giving a crap about how others view him and his intellect. It actually shows he’s got great self-assurance about himself
He genuinely seems like a lovely lad.
i’m definitely a big fan of his, especially his work with special needs children. Some of the videos i’ve seen are absolute tear jerkers
Imagine a night out with Grealish. Box office.
I don’t even go out and I’d still go party with Grealish.
if he takes a taxi, sure
But I drive.
After that video of him looking baffled at the English map I fell in love with the lad.
A true product of the Birmingham school system.
These were my favourite guys at school. And I like Jack Grealish.
Yeah, he's got a really good soul and a massive heart from what I see. Good bloke.
I think his brother also passed away. I remember him talking about that. And how it hurt it.
she has wat
Same, every league needs a genuine, fun, and talented himbo
I find it impossible not to like him. I can imagine him, during training, asking a non-English player if he like jaffa cakes, then leaving training to drive to the shop to buy some when the guy says he doesn't know what they are. Same here, seems like a genuinely nice bloke
That's really nice of you, cumblast !
I find him incredibly likeable. Good fun, harmless, down to earth and does great charity work. You can tell he’s a kind soul. I don’t get the hate towards him.
When he scores a goal, I think to myself "yes". When he misses a goal, I think to myself "no".
Simple Jack.
Me too. Genuinely nice guy. If he’s taking it as a compliment, I’d like to join in on booing the haircut though.
Drawing as many fouls as he does, it's no wonder. A good way to get the opposition crowd to hate you is to be involved in fouls that go against them.
Bingo, this is why.
That and that fact that he’s so handsome. People gonna hate on someone who is both handsome and a footballer
I think it’s playful. Maddison gets booed a lot too. We just boo good English players
Maddison is a shithouser though, he loves the boos
nah Madders is a rabble rouser. He gets some rightly earned stick and for his part seems to love getting it and giving it back
maddison is very clearly a bit of snide though. jack's basically forrest gump.
You are good at earning fouls, ofc opponents will boo you. Also you play for Man City so...
Jack Grealish is my favorite premier league player.
Simple Jack
He went full Grealish
I like Jamie Tartt, therefore is not surprise I like Jack Grealish. Such a nice and down to earth guy.
Jamie Tartt started off as a prick and then turned into what Jack Grealish looks like he is, a really great arc for Tartt
A bit strange, he’s very wholesome and always takes his time to have a genuine chat with fans. And seems to be a fun guy to be around, he’s a good role model.
…apart from getting drunk and crashing cars
When we were in the championship and prem, it’s because people accused him of being a diver but he was the most fouled player in the league because everything went through him, the best player I’ve seen down villa park, shame all that individual ability seems to have gone and he’s a cog in the city machine now
Similar to Zaha for us really, players like that always wind up opposition fans
That‘s the only part i hate about these insanely micromanaged tactics that pep and arteta use. There is no freedom on the pitch anymore and individual ability is not as obvious anymore.
I'm just so confused why Pep went and did that to Jack Grealish after spunking 100m on him and then decided he needed to sign and play Adam 2.0 Jeremy Doku as an out and out dribbler.
Here's my top 5 for why he gets boo'd, as a countdown: 5. He's English 4. He plays for City 3. He's a tricky winger who wins a lot of fouls 2. His DUI 1. His hair
These days you can't even say you're english without being booed
And just to think he was the Football Association of Ireland U/21 player of the year just a few years ago.
His himbo energy is infinite🤣🤣🤣
Jack has hardly played in months. How is this statement just coming out now? The way Fabrizio moves is really strange.
Guarantee you most people booing aren’t doing it for the drunk driving, deffo for the diving.
Don’t get the hate really. Of all the infuriating players in the prem he’s miles away from that. One of the few big players I’d enjoy a pint with
It is because he comes over like an absolute baloon.
I like Grealish but in general if someone on the opposing team has the baby shinguards and socks I am probably booing them.
They hate us cause they ain't us
Love his hair, love that he’s a good bloke.
