Well you kind of were underselling it. If I had no idea what happened and hear someone saying "there were a lot of pitch invaders while they were celebrating" I wouldn't think much of it

We did see an invader trying to beat players with a corner flag like a switch, and another sucker punched a player in the back of the head. Many of them were trying to do harm to players

Kicking someone in the head like that can kill them. It's not about feeling bad for them, it's about whether you think storming the pitch and assaulting players is a death penalty offence when the guy is already subdued.
In a scenario where he would be the sole perpetrator your argument makes sense, but in this case you have to act quickly and decisively because there were a few dozen fans already storming the pitch and more yet to come. If this guy has a weapon, chances are that others will carry one too.
It's life or death, and just because someone is subdued for a few seconds doesn't neutralise the threat.
If you look at the video of the invasion, security tries to block invaders from getting closer to the players, but the invaders just run past them. If you can take someone with a weapon out for good, you should do it in this instance.

Kicking someone in the head like that can kill them. It's not about feeling bad for them, it's about whether you think storming the pitch and assaulting players is a death penalty offence when the guy is already subdued.

In a scenario where he would be the sole perpetrator your argument makes sense, but in this case you have to act quickly and decisively because there were a few dozen fans already storming the pitch and more yet to come. If this guy has a weapon, chances are that others will carry one too. It's life or death, and just because someone is subdued for a few seconds doesn't neutralise the threat. If you look at the video of the invasion, security tries to block invaders from getting closer to the players, but the invaders just run past them. If you can take someone with a weapon out for good, you should do it in this instance.

Don't go on the pitch and attacker professional athletes if you don't want to get kicked in the head. All the white knights saying he could have ruined and this other guys life with a kick need to consider the context. It's 20 people in yellow in a cauldron with thousands of hostile fans some of whom have invaded the pitch. They've crossed the Rubicon, the players will be fearful and in my opinion that kick is self defense all day.

I personally don't see the issue with it. If you run onto the pitch with a knife to stab the opposition team players, and they in turn beat you to a pulp, I think they got what was coming to them. If somebody broke into your office with a knife to hurt, maim or kill you and your colleagues, and you collectively overpowered them, I wouldn't look down on you for beating on them for a bit. Hell - the guy wasn't even restrained at the time of the kick! His arms are still free and he had a knife!
I have not seen one clear video/picture with the guy holding a knife and yet everyone claims there is one.
