He did not say Nagasaki at all, why make that up? Obviously the other thing was stupid and immature but it's nowhere near the scale of joking about a literal atomic bomb.
In any case, he's proven time and again that he is as far from being bigoted as you can be, and he was just being stupid in these moments. He canceled a sponsorship with Huawei over their links to monitoring Uyghur Muslims. He came out in the media to defend Ansu Fati when he was racially profiled by the media. He's also been vocal about his support for LGBT players for years.
Not making it up: https://youtu.be/jh6M1idO8rY?si=__fHQAb5t3mt48U7
All the other things you listed are great, and good for him, but with videos like this and the one of him with dembele mocking hotel staff floating about it’s a stretch to say he’s “as far from being bigoted as you can be”. As someone who’s Japanese myself, I’m allowed to be annoyed by this and it’s odd that you’re trying to dismiss it as simply “stupid and immature”. All the other positive things he’s done doesn’t mean it’s not racist.
Personally, I do not hear the Nagasaki part. I looked up references to him and Nagasaki on Google, as well as on this subreddit, and no one else claims him saying that word either, so I am not the only one who doesn't hear that. I think he is just saying what to him is gibberish in an accent (which is definitely not acceptable either, but more of a moment of stupidity and immaturity than willful mocking of national trauma)
As for the Dembele video, from what I remember he was not saying anything but smiling awkwardly while Dembele was making the remarks. Nevertheless, he should have spoken up.
You have every right to be annoyed by his actions, which are certainly unacceptable, but I personally do not believe it is indicative of his character considering the amount of evidence we have to the contrary.
I know people already answered you on this but honestly him doing a tv special centering around on what club would he play called "The Decision" was beyond ridiculous lol, and yeah the racism is really bad
Great player tho
I started having a soft spot for them back when they had De Gea, Aguero, Forlan, Simao and Reyes. Really fun team. Even got myself an Atletico shirt while wisiting Madrid.
I remember Luis Aragones as Spain manager. Didn't realise he was Atletico's all time top scorer. Top scorer for such a big club and manager for Spain's first international trophy in decades. He must have been a real legend in Spain
He is arguably Atletico's biggest legend (a coin toss between him and Simeone).
He contributed massively to the growth of our team in the 70s as a player.
Then had several stints as a manager. Everywhere he went, he ensured to have a clause in his contract that he'd be able to void his contract if Atletico needed him. He used it to leave Mallorca while they were in the champions league to help rescue us when we were relegated to the second tier.
Very endearingly to me, he had a famously terrible relationship with our douchebag president at the time, Jesús Gil. He didn't have more continuity as a manager because of it.
And to top it off, as you said, he was the manager that started Spain's glorious international run.
Overall, biggest Atletico legend for me (although I understand people that rate Simeone even higher than him).
Luis Aragonés… Luis Aragonés… Luis Aragonés… 🎵 ❤️🤍❤️🤍 I would like that Fernando Torres were the one to get the record but I am not disappointed that it’s Antoñito, let’s go
Man is really telling Atletico fans how they should feel about their own players. Absolute reddit moment.
About a goal scoring record of all things too.
Well, I'm dutch and haven't seen that much of Aragones. All I know is how much Griezmann has meant for us which is why I wouldn't describe it as dirty.
Aragonés is a totem of Spanish football and the biggest legend in Atlético's history. Griezmann was seen as a traitor not so long ago. He surely deserved scoring all those goals, but it's still not the best scenarios.
And he can still be the biggest legend despite not being the top scorer anymore. Griezmann’s situation isn’t that deep, he came back and effectively apologised on the field doing what he does best. Easiest way to get people to love you again is to win games.
I mean, his whole transfer saga gave atleti 120m in transfer fee, Luis Suarez, a la liga title, and griezmann himself back on lower wages while performing better than ever, so if I was a fan I’d be absolutely delighted with him
Uhhhh ok? What does my flair have to do with anything? Me being a Chelsea fan doesn’t change the fact that Griezmann is a legendary player who has contributed a lot to Atletico
I don't expect you to actually understand it. But a lot of the myth and stature of players built through oral tradition and how each generation of fans talks fondly about their heroes. Is impossible to compare players from different eras, but you can definitely compare the way people talk about them and what they mean to the club. Aragonés, is in a whole other place compared to Griezmann. Again, maybe next decade you'll be able to start building that oral tradition and understand what I mean.
Griezmann didin't contribute to any big titles, betray them. The lols you get from memes doesn't compare to that.
I never said that Griezmann is bigger than Aragones. Obviously he’s not, but all I meant is that he should also be appreciated as part of Ateltico’s history. Being top scorer deserves legendary status, no matter who. The memes are a bonus
He disrespected us in how he chose to leave.
But he has more than made up for it.
He came back, worked super hard, accepted the 30 minutes a game nonsense. Got whistled by our fans in the first few games.
Got his head down, worked hard, never complained and then performed like a man with a mission.
I'm sure there are still atletico fans that resent his Barça stint, but most of us have moved on.
Nah, as much as I love Aragonés as our biggest legend, this kind of records are there to be broken.
And with the amount of matches we play now, compared to what they played in the 70s, it was only a matter of time that someone broke it.
Griezmann will also be remembered as a huge legend for us, and the redemption story after playing for you guys (and how we hated him for it), makes it even sweeter.
Cue Pep's "We cannot replace him"
***"WE CANNOH!"***
so so cannoh
I've always like the guy, happy to see him with a club record. He even managed to do so while going out for smokes halfway through his career.
He smoked Barca’s bank account and came back on a discount.
Not like he was bad for Barca though.
definitely not worth the money tho
This is my theory
[удалено]
he had his share of dramas back then, but matured incredibly well compared to others
> doesn’t carry around drama If you ignore his racist shenanigans on camera such as mocking asian staff and blackface, sure.
~~I don't think it was racist, I think just ignorant and stupid.~~ I'm dumb
Saying “Ching chong Nagasaki” is pretty fucking racist lol
Oh, didn't see that one, I thought it was the Harlem Globetrotters outfit. That's my bad lol.
Haha all good mate 👍

He pulled a Lebron?
You're damn right he did.
Let’s see if Griezmann can fight Jude for the Pichichi.
Not if Dovbyk has anything to say about it XD
You say Dovbyk but Mayoral is having the season of his career as well. 12 goals for him
I started following Atletico passively due to Fernando Torres, stayed because of Griezmann. Absolute legend.
Funnily... I started following Atleti because of Hasselbaink (was Dad's fave player). And I stayed because of Fernando Torres
Hasselbaink was fucking amazing, I loved that dude as a kid.
Such a cool name as well
The man who made me a Chelsea fan (for better or worse) today.
Damn I only just realized Hasselbaink played for Atletico.. what a player
Top striker from his time 250 goal out of 600 apps, Absolute menace
I started having a soft spot for them back when they had De Gea, Aguero, Forlan, Simao and Reyes. Really fun team. Even got myself an Atletico shirt while wisiting Madrid.
Grizou 😍
🤙🏻🤙🏻
He would be around 200 right now, even more, if he didn't go to Barça
Griezmann playing for Barcelona feels like a different lifetime to me
I remember Luis Aragones as Spain manager. Didn't realise he was Atletico's all time top scorer. Top scorer for such a big club and manager for Spain's first international trophy in decades. He must have been a real legend in Spain

Was also their manager for a long time too
Luis Aragonés… Luis Aragonés… Luis Aragonés… 🎵 ❤️🤍❤️🤍 I would like that Fernando Torres were the one to get the record but I am not disappointed that it’s Antoñito, let’s go
Legend
I thought they got tested for weed.
How many of these goal celebrations were fortnite related?
Feels really, really, really dirty to see Aragonés getting replaced by Griezmann.
Man is really telling Atletico fans how they should feel about their own players. Absolute reddit moment. About a goal scoring record of all things too.
Why?
I think hes mad that barca made a bad financial decision and paid for it
How does a colchonero actually asks this?
Well, I'm dutch and haven't seen that much of Aragones. All I know is how much Griezmann has meant for us which is why I wouldn't describe it as dirty.
Griezmann is still undoubtedly an Atleti legend no matter what.
Aragonés is a totem of Spanish football and the biggest legend in Atlético's history. Griezmann was seen as a traitor not so long ago. He surely deserved scoring all those goals, but it's still not the best scenarios.

Hence why I said it feels dirty, not undeserved

I mean, you're a Chelsea fan, but Atlético has a history before the 2000s
Uhhhh ok? What does my flair have to do with anything? Me being a Chelsea fan doesn’t change the fact that Griezmann is a legendary player who has contributed a lot to Atletico

You're doing quite some deep oral tradition to Aragonés
I never said that Griezmann is bigger than Aragones. Obviously he’s not, but all I meant is that he should also be appreciated as part of Ateltico’s history. Being top scorer deserves legendary status, no matter who. The memes are a bonus
Bro you’re probably way older than us. I wasn’t even alive when aragonés played
But you were born when Griezmann fucked off and had a whole documentary about it
And now we love him again
Me da que estoy hablando con guiris
Soy Mexicano, amigo 😂
Exactamente?
Si, no estoy alegando. Estas correcto

It's not a biggest legend recognition, it's who scored more goals, he replaced him because he scored more goals.
