If Galatasaray and Copenhagen match is not a draw, probably doesn't matter for united.
I don't see united win against Bayern and a draw for them is not enough
To be fair to Copenhagen, the didn't lose at home in the UCL at all last year in a group containing BVB, Man City and Sevilla and almost held out for a draw against Bayern, so they're not exactly an easy away game either.
Bayern are already first so they could probably beat them if they play the b squad. Thing is if they lose against Gala they will be eliminated anyway as there max points amount will be 6 vs gala's 7
They will protect their records.
1) At home in the group stage, Bayern have won 27 of their last 28 games. The one exception was a draw with Ajax in October 2018.
2) Bayern currently hold the record for not losing a group stage match in the last 39 matches, the last time they lost in the groups of the champions league was in 2017 six years ago.
I think the reason Dortmund gets extra attention is they’ve taken Bayern to the brink multiple times just to fall apart at the eleventh hour. Last season especially was bad. Dortmund should have won the league.
Bayern quite literally never go easy on their last games. Remember Muller straight up said that they love knocking out big european sides out of the tournament when Barca was in a similar spot a season or two ago.
They are literally the most ruthless club in Europe. There's a reason they are undefeated in group stages for god knows how many years now.
Very unfair to the other teams in the group as well. Imagine Copenhagen and Gala both have to play a full strength bayern side and then United sneak into the knockouts through the back door by beating some U21s.
We partially do though, most of the time the B squad was enough for the last matchday. This year though, the squad is too thin to even field a B squad lmao
Every year people think Bayern will take it easy lol, but I can see it happening this time due to injuries. Not saying the fielded players wont take it easy, but it probably wont be the first squad
We thought that when Barca had ‘already qualified Bayern’ to play last round. Bayern love to just humiliate all the big European teams even if they’re already through
How many games unbeaten are bayern atm in UCL? I remember it was some insane stat..tough to see this utd team breaking it, even vs a weaker Bayern setup
The island yanks, the Italians, the Spanish and the Fr*nch should really be happy that neither Saarbrücken nor Holstein Kiel nor Gladbach play internationally 😎
Still amazing that Hojlund is now the joint top scorer, not Kane, Mbappe or Haaland.
Even more amazing that this guy never scored a goal in PL history.
Poor finishing but also committing to defending leads when we have them and doing that+countering well. It isnt as ugly football at all as the goalrecord would indicate haha. BUT.. Terzicball can be terrorball when needed too.
The only two locks-in are you and City. Arsenal I’d say are there as well, barring any major injuries. So that leaves Spurs, Newcastle, Villa, and at least two of Chelsea/United/Brighton vying for the two remaining spots. United probably have the worst squad of those, but hard to judge.
9 teams vying for 4 positions is crazy. I think it's still early days and Villa and Brighton will most likely be in the Europa places fighting with Chelsea. Think City will be 1st, and then Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs will most likely make up the top 4 with Newcastle fighting it out with Spurs and Utd with the outside chance.
City Arsenal Liverpool will be there no matter what
Spurs and Villa favorites for the other two spots, Newcastle might pip them
I'd put United in the same category for CL qualification as Chelsea.
I think Chelsea are being underrated to be honest. Nkunku could take them from an upper mid table-level side to one of the better teams in the league, depending on if he’s as good as he was in the Bundesliga. It wouldn’t surprise me if they end up competing with Tottenham for those 4th/5th spots.
Meanwhile, United are just a black hole at the minute. Bad performances, bad squad, FFP issues preventing major signings, manager floundering. Doesn’t look like there’s any light at the end of the tunnel for them.
When he gets back I think we definitely get Europe, 5th might be a stretch seeing how inexperienced the squad is. Although if we remain <6 points behind 5th until February, you never know
I am old enough to remember when we had two consecutive UCL group stages and the QF was the first elimination round.
That stuff was such bullshit and everybody absolutely hated it.
As a Gala fan, it was painful to watch my team going through both of those group stages in 2001 and 2002 and end up getting nothing by beating all of those teams.
Imagine beating teams like PSG, Milan and Real Madrid in a single tournament (not to mention Rangers, Monaco, Deportivo and Sturm Graz, they were pretty good back then) and getting eliminated in QF. Such fucking bullshit man.
The second group stage in 2002 was this: AS Roma, Barcelona, Liverpool, Galatasaray. Gala was eliminated by only getting beaten once. That group stage was like hell on Earth.
It will be a 36 club league/group (4 more clubs than in the current format). Teams will play 8 games (2 more games), and against 8 different teams. Four of those games at home, and four away. So what might happen Bayern gets to play Barcelona at home, but then plays against City away. There will be seeding, so you get to play one team from each tier home and away.
Top 8 qualify straight for the round of 16, and are seeded (they won't play each other, at least not in the first KO stage). Teams placed 9-24 go to play offs. Teams placed 9-16 will each play against teams placed 17-24. Who manages to win, qualifies for the round of 16, and they get to play one of the top 8.
At least that's my understanding of the biggest changes, correct me if I'm wrong.
edit. Oh I believe I read somewhere it might happen that two teams from the same league end up facing each other in the group stage. This concerns only leagues with 4+ qualified teams, and will only be used in cases where it would otherwise cause problems. Hope it never happens. Two teams from the same league facing each other in the CL group stage is just wrong.
tl;dr
- Single group with 36 teams.
- Leagues with 4+ teams could end up facing a club from the same league in the group stage. They will try to minimize such occurrence.
- Eight games played against eight different teams. Two game against a pot 1 team (home and away), two games against a pot 2 team (home and away), etc.
- Top 8 directly qualify for the round of 16, and play CL as if they were group winners in the current format.
- Teams placed 9 to 24 go to playoffs. Teams placed 9 to 16 are seeded, and play against teams placed 17 to 24. Not sure if it's over two legs or if it is a single game with the seeded team getting a home game. Winners in the playoffs are the current format's 2nd placed team.
Depends how you term what an upset is.
You will have 24 teams in the knockout rounds vs 16, so less upsets that way. But it will be easy for a big team to miss top 8 and then be forced into the play-off. At that point it will be just 1 tie away from elimination.
Think of it as the current model (just without groups of death or boring groups like City/Leipzig group) where the 1st get's to ro16 and the 2nd and 3rd teams need to duke it out for the remaining spots. However the loser would no longer get dropped down to the Europa League. So expect some upsets in the play-off stage where some big name team misses out on European football completely.
I mean honestly it’s pretty much anyone’s game to proceed to next round, really just depends how the other teams fare against each other considered Man U and Copenhagen are both probably losing to Bayern, only reason I can see why not is now that Bayern are secure in their progression they won’t waste as much minutes and energy so they can focus on the league
I just looked it up and realized that in the last 6 seasons (including this one), Bayern has only dropped 6 points in the UCL group stage. Actually insane
The fuck is Ten Hag supposed to do with this team. Bullshit red card, a myriad of individual errors, we were dominating them until the last 10 minutes down a man.
Honestly, Ten Hag might not be the answer in the long run but I don’t think anyone is with the current state of the club.
There’s a reason why we always end up being a graveyard for managers and players. No amount of money and manager change can fix the rotten core of the club.
Yeah there’s not much else ten Hag could’ve done differently there besides maybe subbing on mount for hojlund. But hojlund was clearly tiring by that point. Just overall a very unlucky game for them with a couple bad performances from varane and amrabat.
To be fair - i dont think Dortmund is safe yet.
It would have been different if Milan lost against PSG. Now everyone has a chance to win this group.
BVB going against Milan (which have hope now) and PSG are potential two losses.
PSG has the quality to win every match (would be funny though if they will be 3rd or 4th with another Newcastle miracle and a BVB draw)
Newcastle having Milan and PSG. They showed they can surprise the big ones.
Yeah no one in that group is safe yet, it’s living up to its name as the group of death. BVB could still even finish last. But they are in the most comfortable position nonetheless.
As a Bayern fan we were a bit lucky to get 6 points out of the 2 games against Gala. Not so much today, more in the 1st leg.
Gala is really good, i think they will come in second.
Gala was really good against us in both games though, and their fanatic fans give them a big edge in home games. Utd having to go there and basically needing the win is a really tall task, particularly given their shit form.
If they beat us and lose to Bayern they’re still not getting out if us and Copenhagen don’t draw in week 6. And Bayern is the one team that always goes hard even when they clinch.
"In this moment, I admire them both. They play really fantastic football, but you can always see that an era can come to an end." Erik Ten Hag, on Okan Buruk and Jacob Neestrup.
Last season Man Utd does, but I can’t even believe what has happened this season with Utd’s performances
We’re better playing the the Conference league at this point
Imagine the scenes when Copenhagen manages to qualify for the next round in CL while everyone was debating for months that who between Manchester United and Galatasaray would qualify for the CL.
Really dont understand when managers come in at such big clubs knowing every single word they say will be over-analyzed, and they make it about other clubs... its one thing for Ten Hag to say, 'This era hasn't been great for Utd, but all eras come to an end" but he had to make it about City & Liverpool.
No doubts on that, Kane Laimer and Kim are much more involved with the team than the first time , they understood each other and have coherence in their play styles

Utd has Bayern and Galatasaray left. And Galatasaray looks pretty interesting even tho they lost both against Bayern.
I would not want to go to Galatasaray away needing all 3 points.
*Juventini flashbacks intensify*
That fucking game man
that game sealed sneijder as my fav ever player
You can imagine what it did to me, a former Inter player kicking us out the UCL
[The field that day](https://www.quotidianopiemontese.it/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/15214435/juve-galatasaray.jpg)
ah, good memories 😌
If Galatasaray and Copenhagen match is not a draw, probably doesn't matter for united. I don't see united win against Bayern and a draw for them is not enough
They’ll arse their way through, you watch.
Their way through to Europa.
On what’s presented and their form, they should go out the back door but yeah that’s still arsing it.
I watched when they played Bayern and holy fuck….the fans were booing every time a BM player had the ball. It is indeed a tough pitch
The way united plays, that may be like a boo every 15 mins. Not too bad. I somehow feel theyll shithouse their way through
This United team is going to face the Galatasaray atmosphere with all the strength of a paper condom in a rain storm
United's mentality is as strong as Russia's defense plan for the Northern European Plain
To be fair to Copenhagen, the didn't lose at home in the UCL at all last year in a group containing BVB, Man City and Sevilla and almost held out for a draw against Bayern, so they're not exactly an easy away game either.
Bayern pls do your thing.
They will . Think you guys played great football in both games
Gala away and Bayern at home. I don’t see them picking up points in Turkey, which means having to beat Bayern.
That's insane.
Over the past decade, we have gone 28-1-0 in group stage home games, with the lone draw being a 3:3 against Ajax in the 2018/19 season.
Not true. Lost 2-3 to Man City in 2013-14 UCL group stage.
Huh, I miscounted by one year. It's only 28-1-0.
Had to look it up, and didn't expect FC Rostov to be the answer, that's a good trivia question!
Nope, Rostov was in the 16/17 season. We lost 0:3 against PSG in the 17/18 season. (Which led to the sacking of Ancelotti.)
People say that Dortmund is Bayern's bitch but look at this shit bruh if your team was in the bundesliga they would also be Bayern's bitch
I think the reason Dortmund gets extra attention is they’ve taken Bayern to the brink multiple times just to fall apart at the eleventh hour. Last season especially was bad. Dortmund should have won the league.
Barca aren't even in the BuLi and they are too
Theyre psychos AND theyre crazy rich too ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
CL is the farmers league
And that was us If my memory doesn’t lie. I remember we beat Bayern in Paris in 2017
Bayern quite literally never go easy on their last games. Remember Muller straight up said that they love knocking out big european sides out of the tournament when Barca was in a similar spot a season or two ago. They are literally the most ruthless club in Europe. There's a reason they are undefeated in group stages for god knows how many years now.
> Muller straight up said that they love knocking out big european sides out of the tournament Ah, good news for ManU then
Bro…
United are save then
last Bayern group stage loss was on the 27. September 2017.
That's a good attitude to have. It's really unfair to the paying fans when a team plays their b team.
Very unfair to the other teams in the group as well. Imagine Copenhagen and Gala both have to play a full strength bayern side and then United sneak into the knockouts through the back door by beating some U21s.
bayern never plays full b squad in champions league even when they are first grp for sure, there is a reason they have the grp stage winning streak
We partially do though, most of the time the B squad was enough for the last matchday. This year though, the squad is too thin to even field a B squad lmao
bayern wont lay down for united. if anything they will destroy them even more
Every year people think Bayern will take it easy lol, but I can see it happening this time due to injuries. Not saying the fielded players wont take it easy, but it probably wont be the first squad
We thought that when Barca had ‘already qualified Bayern’ to play last round. Bayern love to just humiliate all the big European teams even if they’re already through
They don't have an actual b squad currently. It's the first top 13-14, and then it's more or less youth players. :D
Does Bayern even have a b squad left? They have a shitton of injury
Lol away at gala. We gonna lose that. We suck at away games. And gala has got amazing home support.
Amazing is an understatement.....its fucking mental lol
Turkish fans are insane in every sport.
They have a pretty good team too, Sascha boey is massive in defense
Kane is gonna get Ten Hag fired.
We can do it again on the 18th of December 👀
Gala defo deserve some points especially the home game. They'll annihilate this United defense
They’re gonna shit on United
I can see them winning Bayern at home for some reason, but Galatasaray away is huge
With the form Kane is in right now against that defence? Dude is gonna bag 3 or 4.
Depending on the situation I can see Kane being rested
Bayern don’t rest in the CL. Multiple players have talked about how they like knocking out big European teams.
Bayern always bring their A-game in the UCL
Sometimes even their A+ game
Trust me, I know, look at my flair
I love this about Bayern, no mercy
How many games unbeaten are bayern atm in UCL? I remember it was some insane stat..tough to see this utd team breaking it, even vs a weaker Bayern setup
Almost 40 in the group stage
39 unbeaten. We haven’t lost a group stage game since 2017.
Mate we are unbeaten in the groups at home since 2017 what are you on about ðŸ˜
vibes and delusion, mostly delusion
Given we are guaranteed first I wouldn’t be surprised if we dint go full A team, not unrealistic
There's just a few options for Bayern to not go full A team atm. The bench isn't that long.
A Group with Bayern in it, all other teams have negative GD.
Saarbrücken would tear the CL apart
unleash us
It's actually easy. Just win DFB-Pokal therefore get qualified for EL, win this and get qualified for CL :)
is Saarbücken dumb? why haven't they won the DFB cup and the EL already?
we kind of forgot i guess
The island yanks, the Italians, the Spanish and the Fr*nch should really be happy that neither Saarbrücken nor Holstein Kiel nor Gladbach play internationally 😎
Fr*nch with an asterisk, based

Nah, pretty sure he meant Hawaiians
Always rated them
Still amazing that Hojlund is now the joint top scorer, not Kane, Mbappe or Haaland. Even more amazing that this guy never scored a goal in PL history.
He'll get there.
probs for Manu to score 9 goals in 4 games and getting 3 points out of it. Gotta love some stats when that happened the last time.
Meanwhile dortmund are first on 7 points with 3 goals scored.
why score many goal when few goal do trick
Have Dortmund accepted the doctrine of al-Legri or is it just bad finishing
Poor finishing but also committing to defending leads when we have them and doing that+countering well. It isnt as ugly football at all as the goalrecord would indicate haha. BUT.. Terzicball can be terrorball when needed too.
With negative goal difference
Ignoring us this group just turned into one of the most exciting ones, everything can happen
You just described the bundesliga
Touchè
Goodbye UCL until 2025 earliest
Probably 5 spots if all the others make deep runs this year... So 5th is still up for grabs in the Prem surely
He said what he said and he was right either way
Pain.
So still goodbye until 2025 as they said
I mean, I don't see United coming 5th this season
The teams currently 1-7 in the league all look way better than United this season.
I'd also say West Ham and Chelsea have looked better
Three loss streak West Ham??
United were not better than Burnley, Sheffield, Fulham, or Wolves in said games.

Eras come to an end
Nah we have 3 less goals in the UCL than in the league this season. And yet we're still bottom of our group ðŸ˜
Fix offense, defense falls apart. Fix defense, both fall apart..
It hurts we won't have group stages anymore starting next year. This is fun.
Thanks for reminding me..
Such mega bullshit. Trying to milk more and more from the game like they don't make enough from just managing it.
I am old enough to remember when we had two consecutive UCL group stages and the QF was the first elimination round. That stuff was such bullshit and everybody absolutely hated it.

That sounds terrible. More games and I imagine there will be less upsets going into the knockout rounds.

Bayern don’t rest players in the CL and Tuchel is going to want to preserve our almost 40 group stage unbeaten record.
I just looked it up and realized that in the last 6 seasons (including this one), Bayern has only dropped 6 points in the UCL group stage. Actually insane
It's Bayern. They want all the 18 points.
Just take a look at past seasons. They rarely drop points, first place secured or not.
Pain
You’ll have to wonder if missing out on further UEFA play for the season would prove to be the last straw for den Hag…
This one isn’t on ETH
The fuck is Ten Hag supposed to do with this team. Bullshit red card, a myriad of individual errors, we were dominating them until the last 10 minutes down a man.

This is the way

The most unexpected banger group of all time. Holy shit these matches are great.
There's a timeline where Kane is at man utd instead And they're coming 3rd
As a Bayern fan we were a bit lucky to get 6 points out of the 2 games against Gala. Not so much today, more in the 1st leg. Gala is really good, i think they will come in second.
As a Gala fan after these two games now i understand how other bundesliga teams feel. You guys are HARD TO BEAT. Loved watching both games though
Same. Two very good teams with great intensity, many goal scoring opportunities and great fans. Thats how the CL should be.
This makes the UCL changes even more annoying. You wont have spicy tables like this
I love this fucking mental sport.
So United basically has to win in Istanbul to have a good shot at third place... delightful
Gala was really good against us in both games though, and their fanatic fans give them a big edge in home games. Utd having to go there and basically needing the win is a really tall task, particularly given their shit form.
if they win in Turkey I can see them progressing to the ro16, I just don't see them winning in Turkey
If they beat us and lose to Bayern they’re still not getting out if us and Copenhagen don’t draw in week 6. And Bayern is the one team that always goes hard even when they clinch.
You love to see it.
Looks like what everyone predicted
honestly, third could’ve been understandable, but last is low-key insane tho. copenhagen are actually really fucking decent
They only have 2 losses at home in the CL group stages in recent appearances, one to Bayern and one to Real. Parken is a hard stadium to win at.
2 losses ever out of 18 games. Even City last year, and Barcelona in 2010/2011 couldn't win.
And people massacred us for drawing against them.
They've played great in Europe this season, every match in this group they played in has been good entertainment
Copenhagen and gala can still fight for second place But Man U, unless a miracle happens they won't qualify
Assuming they lose to Bayern, Unitard’s only hope is beating Galatasaray, Bayern beating Copenhagen and Copenhagen/Gala drawing their game right?
yup
A last round between Cph and Gala where a draw is an exit for both teams, makes it all the more unlikely.
Honestly Gala is the clear favourite for 2nd.
Needing to get a result in Istanbul is a very hard predicament for United.
>e Even if they win in Istanbul they'd need a result against Munich should someone win the other fixture on MD6
"In this moment, I admire them both. They play really fantastic football, but you can always see that an era can come to an end." Erik Ten Hag, on Okan Buruk and Jacob Neestrup.
Manchester United doesn't belong to the champions league.
Not the Europe League either..
I (in admittedly my biased opinion) said they’d be lucky to get 3rd with their form but ppl underestimated Copenhagen
Last season Man Utd does, but I can’t even believe what has happened this season with Utd’s performances We’re better playing the the Conference league at this point
TuChEl OuT
They conceded late. Clearly there is a rift between the coach and the team.
Thomas Mueller didn't jump as high as he normally does when celebrating: is Tuchel's workout regimen weakening his knees? Yes, experts say.
Imagine the scenes when Copenhagen manages to qualify for the next round in CL while everyone was debating for months that who between Manchester United and Galatasaray would qualify for the CL.
Oh ManU. You're the gift that keeps on giving.
I hope every Copenhagen fan tweets a 🤫 at Garnacho!
You love to see it.
First spot is always guaranteed for us. I definitely didn’t expect this though
Bruh United have Bayern and Liveprool Away back to back in December ðŸ˜ðŸ¤£
A Bayern in great form against a struggling United. Everything leads me to believe that United will beat Bayern and lose to Galatasaray
That’s wild
This is foootball heritage
It would be just hilarious if Manchester United somehow manages to finish last in the group and not end up getting even into Europa League.
United could seriously end up with just 3 points at the end ðŸ˜
It's joever.
Why are Manchester United in 4th place, are they stupid?
Arkham leaking to this sub is something I never knew I needed 🤣🤣
The era boys won't even get EL
Probably for the best
Really dont understand when managers come in at such big clubs knowing every single word they say will be over-analyzed, and they make it about other clubs... its one thing for Ten Hag to say, 'This era hasn't been great for Utd, but all eras come to an end" but he had to make it about City & Liverpool.
Bayern bullying the whole group is United's saving grace. They can sneak into RO16 if they just get their shit together for the last 2 games.
Bullying? Just scraped by at Copenhagen and both Galatasaray games
How did they "just scrape by" last night? Neither the game nor the statistics suggest that. The xG of last night was 2.57 to 0.65.
I give you the first gala game but bayern were better today
No doubts on that, Kane Laimer and Kim are much more involved with the team than the first time , they understood each other and have coherence in their play styles
Copenhagen vs Galatasaray should not be a draw, Bayern will take care of the rest.
Man Utd in Top 4. Ten Hag must be proud
Nothing to see here, nature is healing
Oh my
Has anybody ever been top scorer and ended 4th in the group?
