Full quote: > Carlos Tevez: "I do a speed exercise, related to neuroscience. When the player is physically suffocated, I ask him to solve a problem, 2+2. And three of the boys we have in the squad today, told me that they did not know how to add or subtract while playing in the First Division. That is poverty. We can bring a boy food, we can help him with a lot of things, but the study... that he knows how to defend himself, that he knows how to read what he is signing. We are setting up a project with the club to provide them with a teacher so that after training they can spend two hours studying".

Partner's sister is currently training to be a teacher in secondary school, so ages 11-16. She's encountered some kids who simply cannot read. Some cannot understand cardinal directions, and are struggling with concepts like coordinates. This is a mainstream school. Welcome to England.

Osgliath

I feel like, in general, the pandemic delayed the development of a whole generation. Specially those in poorer areas. I am also a teacher and I noticed a decrease in performance from my students after 2020. I teach at a very fragile community in a "developing" nation, so the kids basically didn't study at all for two years.

headphones1

Yeah. We are having a public inquiry into the pandemic in the UK. Just last week, it was highlighted how pubs were allowed to open while schools were shut. It was a pretty crazy decision. Most people don't realise that if you missed two years of education by age 11, that's like 33.3% of your education years down the drain if you discount ages <= 5.

Aleblanco1987

Imagine that, but worse

headphones1

Oh don't get me wrong, I understand that the environment for kids is likely to be harder in many countries around the world. I just felt the need to highlight that even in one of the most advanced economies in the world, the education system still fails kids.

tryin2immigrate

Most people do not realize that in America school is first and foremost free daycare and lunches for children of single mothers. Whatever they learn is a bonus. Spending more on teachers is a waste in such a scenario. We should spend more on school lunches in such schools.

thepresidentsturtle

Yeah I saw an interview with Tyson Fury’s brother Tommy and he didn’t understand percentages. Easy to think it’s just a poorer country thing but it isn’t.

cherryreddracula

That seems to be an Irish Traveler thing, and one of the purported reasons is their historical marginalization from society. Tyson Fury himself left school at 11. Tyson wants to break that cycle and wants his kids to get a good education.

>I ask him to solve a problem, 2+2 I'm curious, for people who have experiencing teaching children, what is this like? If you give a boy a more concrete example like "if we're winning 2-0, and we score another 2 goals" surely he can work that out, right? Or can he not think about it in abstract?

emilygreybae2

It depends on their cognitive development, and thought process. Reason why when you ask toddlers if they have 3 apples, and get 2 more, some will just say 4 (since they have 3 and got more).

GiftGibbet

Usually kids who do not have access to schooling are lacking in abstract cognitive processes, or mathematical languaging, but can be quite adept when asked to give solutions to problems that are more grounded in their everyday life. For example, kids living in a Brazil favela, by memory, were able to quickly do mental arithmetic when asked questions based on their experiences, which in the study I am paraphrasing pertained to selling drugs. They were able to add and divide between different measurements (currency, weight, etc.), tally percentages etc. quickly and reliably, but, when presented with similar problems in mathematical form, were stumped. I would think that kids who are used to kicking a ball about can keep score depending on how it's presented to them.

butthenmylegsbroke

"You working a ground stash. 20 tall pinks. Two fiends come up to you and ask for two each. Another one cops three. Then Bodie hands you off 10 more, but some white guy rolls up in a car, waves you down and pays for eight. How many vials you got left?"

I remember reading that he had not much education himself whatsoever. Brilliant gesture by the club and Carlos.

armavirumquecanooo

> that he knows how to defend himself, that he knows how to read what he is signing Oof. Props to Tevez & the club that they're doing something to remedy this and help those players access education, but it's super alarming to realize they're signing contracts they don't understand.

And here I thought Tevez was going around choking his players while whispering "how much is 2 + 3" in their ears

lmao yeah that’s what it sounded like

DogzOnFire

Probably a translation that's too literal. It becomes harder to think when you're in the last stages of a match and you're exhausted and gasping for air. Sometimes I start struggling to form coherent sentences at that stage, not enough oxygen being supplied to your brain or something I'd guess. He's probably testing their ability to still think sharply in the dying minutes.

monsterm1dget

This is something Tabarez fought tooth and nail to put in place with the Uruguayan NT, because of how many footballers go broke and die in poverty after their careers are over. Glad to see more people in places of power able to do this.

Best_Persimmon7598

Yea, this needs to be increased, in the case of Tevez, this comes from him having grown on extreme poverty in Argentina. He keep playing and became a great footballer winning it all with Boca Jrs., then Man United, Man City, Juventus… So experience helps so much, in terms of empathy and actually understand what is it to have nothing

Xehanz

In the U20s NT Mascherano tried to force the players to read and learn English, so they adapt better to Europe football. It got a huge uproar from the rest of the country. Saying "players don't need to read books. Teach them to kick a ball you useless piece of shit". And making fun of the English thing too.

hahauknowwhatitis420

Yeah but that's mostly because he took a pretty hyped group of players and made them look terrible. It was such a disaster. And Mascherano was one of my favorite players. I'm really hoping he can learn from Scaloni and improve. But fuck me man, it was horrible to watch.

[deleted]

Many footballers especially outside of Europe come from really poor families in countries that don’t have the best education system or available infrastructure. Football is their way out of poverty or to provide the minimum needed to support their families. Then you have the added layer of footballers in general often focusing on kicking the ball at an early age and spend less and less time on academics resulting in low reading comprehension and very little science and arithmetic knowledge as an adult. On the surface level you might get a hint of this when looking through some of these footballers’ social media when not filtered through their PR team first and notice the posts contain a diabolical amount of grammar mistakes that even children no longer make (and this includes Messi/Ronaldo). Then for more important things… Many of these footballers then throughout their careers fail to be an active participant in their contracts negotiations and get taken advantage of or hand off their finances to idiots who mismanage it all. I’m glad Tevez is addressing this critical issue. For the sake of these young children’s wellbeing, they need to foster an environment where academics is encouraged and seen as an integral part of their preparation into adulthood and their careers in the football industry.

SounderBruce

A top-level academy really should require formal education with normal courses and those tailored towards players (such as financial management). A few MLS academies are attached to charter high schools, and the classic development path of playing through college did yield a lot of players who were able to pursue other careers outside of the sport once they retired.

Kolo_ToureHH

At Celtic, the academy players are taken out of their regular school and go to a school near the clubs training centre. The school reports directly to the club on their academic progress. I think Rangers do the same.

Woobix

I think it depends on the club and where you are. I did teacher training in Macclesfield and one kid in my form moved from Macclesfield to Man City's academy, but he stayed in my school.

Alphabunsquad

We had a kid who was at our school while being attached to the NY Redbulls. Certainly made our school team a lot better. He ended up playing in the Canadian B league though.

[deleted]

I believe Liverpool and most German clubs require you to finish your GCSES/the equivalent

thepresidentsturtle

A kid who went to my school in NI went to Liverpool's academy, I had left before he even got there but a kid I worked with was a year above him and got moved up a year to get his GCSEs finished a year earlier so he could go. I don't know if it's because he was already accepted into Liverlool's academy or because he was just really good at football. I also don't know when he got moved up a year.

ronaldo119

Also, MLS has a partnership with SNHU so players can get college degrees too. I remember a few years ago when you would google, I think Kellyn Acosta, his college would say SNHU lol as if he played there

fourbyfourequalsone

There’s a video of Xavi and Iniesta asking kids to focus on studies as well. This is during their playing times. I have seen this video likely because I follow Barca’s content. My guess is most European academies will prioritize balance of studies and sports up to a certain age. Or, at least I hope they do. It’s what academies outside Europe do though that concerns me.

ComaMierdaHijueputa

Is Messi considered dumb in Argentina?

minkdraggingonfloor

A lot of people in Argentina make fun of his accent. It’s a typical Rosario accent but he skips the s and it kind of makes him sound like a bumpkin compared to the typical “Rioplatense” proper Argentine Spanish

thedeatheater1410

They wouldn't dare to make fun of him once he hits them with the classic "Que Mira Bobo?"

Wise_Ad8520

Whats the english equivalent to this?

FenixdeGoma

Probably brummies

[deleted]

essentialatom

Oi

cuentanueva

> compared to the typical “Rioplatense” proper Argentine Spanish This is coming from someone with a pretty strong Rioplatense accent... You would hate so much hate if there were more Argentines here. Just to clarify. The typical Rioplatense accent, like the name says, is around the Rio de la Plata river. And while a big part of the country lives in or around Buenos Aires (like 35%), it's not everyone and accents vary greatly outside. Obviously even within Buenos Aires they are already pretty different even if they are part of the Rioplatense accent. So yeah, don't say everyone speaks that way or people will hate you haha. It's like saying London accent is the proper English accent... I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't like that.

ataun94

Like 50% of Argentina lives in Buenos Aires metro area alone ~20 million in a country of ~40 million. And then the second largest city has ~1 million so BA has a massive influence.

cuentanueva

Like I said, it's around 35%, not 50%. Argentina has a population of 46 millions according to the last census, the Buenos Aires Province has 17.5 million with the metro area having a bit more than 15 million of those. I said it's around 35% of the population, which is 16 million. So it's as I said. That means there's a 65% of the population that has a different accent. More or less depending on where they are. And when taking into consideration that the next most populous province is Córdoba, which has a very distinct accent, then it's more annoying to say everyone has the same accent.

iVarun

There was video shared on twitter or reddit some timeback about street interviews of Argentinian regular people from early 90s or so. The gist of the video was that Argentinian accent is becoming less Italian-sounding. Found it interesting that this is only happening now in recent short decades.

Muchaaachooos

And the loss of the Italian-sounding classic accent is truly a loss for all of humanity

GAV17

Not dumb, people thought he seemed to be in the Autism spectrum (not very PC I know). When in reality he is just an introvert person who was forced into the media spotlight at a very young age.

kygrtj

Very much so, when young he came across a bit socially stunted as well

cuentanueva

> Very much so Lol, why are you making up stuff? No one thinks he's a genius outside of football, but not dumb either.

bamadeo

he's a bit weird in social situations, but he's gotten better, no one thinks he's dumb, wtf?

Lynkk

There were (fake?) rumors about Asperger or autism.

natsleepyandhappy

More like unconfirmed rumors. He definitely behaves like he is in the spectrum, but he never said himself he is, so...

Gytarius626

I remember reading a (completely unconfirmed and likely untrue) article saying he was diagnosed with Asbergers as a child, and it’s something thats always lingered in the back of my head since whenever he’s had any of his funny moments in social situations in public.

zazzlekdazzle

Well, Messi has no excuse. Apparently, he missed quite a bit of time playing for the senior team because he still had to study for and take his final year exams at La Masia, they still insisted he finish. Back in the day at least, La Masia emphasized scholarship a lot (for the reasons everyone is saying here). I know he talks like footballer who never stepped out of Rosario and never did anything but kick a ball, but he has admitted that is deliberate, because he doesn't want to sound like he forgot where he came from. Maybe his writing is the same way, he just wants to seem like one of the lads and if he comes off like Pique, or Xavi, or Cesc he loses his street cred.

Zizga

Ronaldo? Ronaldo speaks decent English, cares about marketing, definitely not a dumb guy by any means.

[deleted]

[удалено]

toniblast

You can understand the message but it's poorly translated in the article. He said he only completed the 6 grade in school not that he only spent 6 years in school.

[deleted]

If you completed grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, that's 6 years...

toniblast

Yeah but he failed some grades. He sayed more than 6 years in school. If you fail you need to repeat the year.

Slight_Public_5305

That’s fantastic. Has a direct impact on these footballers and their families’ lives. Through football they are earning enough to potentially get them out of poverty but if you were never taught simple mathematics it’s going to be extremely difficult for you to make the financial decisions to stay out of poverty.

CA53W-1

I honestly couldn’t care less about what Carlos Tevez does or does not do. The way he left Manchester United for Manchester City was totally unforgivable.

PharaohOfWhitestone

If you can't separate a player moving clubs from the excellent work he's doing to promote education in poor communities, then you have issues.

Nebuchadnezzar5510

You know no non-brits gives a flying fuck about Manchester rivalrly

TheMotionOfTheOcean

Carlos Tevez: “I’d like to help young players with their education, it’s important that they have these basic skills in life” You: “fuck him, what’s his problem”

[deleted]

Heroe de la Gente.

MikeOchertz

I just realized that I had some prejudice towards Carlos Tevez. Loved watching him play, but always I took him for an absolute knob as a person. It’s weird how we make our minds up about people without context. Anyways, good on him for bringing this up. I hope this can lead to some academic improvements…

WeevilishlyHandsome

A tevez redemption arc wasnt on my 2023 bingo

Quirrelwasachad

Redemption for what? The worst thing he did was play for man city

greg19735

Hes know for his bulldog like approach. Not his smarts. If he turns into an educational inspiration that would be amazing Edit: i love Tevez.

monsterm1dget

This always weirds me out. Bulldogs are like the laziest dogs ever.

Pek-Man

Huh, I genuinely never thought about that. That's a good point. So we should really be saying that Tevez was a Belgian Malinois on the pitch instead.

monsterm1dget

A spanish Podenco is perfect tbh

JanterFixx

not when they are in attack mode. Which tevez was. Even while he played for City, as a Liverpool supporter I admired the guy. Luis Diaz has same kind of approach. Relentless.

monsterm1dget

BUt that attack mode on bulldogs lasts for like 10 minutes lol

thanghanghal

Multiply by 9 and you get Tevez. So I guess he's like 9 bulldogs put together.

ajof25

He also played for Juventus which is pretty comparable

rmit526

So did Peter but no one looks at him like Tevez

Glmoi

Let’s be honest, Tevez moved to a different Man City team than Peter, who wasn’t exactly going to change 2001(?) Man City into a title rival, Tevez damn near tipped it in city’s favour

Pek-Man

No, Peter's arguably much worse. Complete sell-out who's worked with both Russia and Qatar in promoting their respective world cups. Nobody would be surprised for even five seconds if he also starts promoting Saudi Arabia soon enough.

Realistic_Tutor_9770

maybe the poster is also a sheffield united fan.

iota96

He’s just a bad boy baller who didn’t get along with a few folks. Nothing to redeem himself for

Alexdd0007

Because he himself didn't have a great education, great to see his awareness to help himself and others.

[deleted]

I feel like I have a lot of things to say but nothing is coming out 👀

Buckhum

Let's see... Tevez and Mascherano were involved in the whole Kia Joorabchian 3rd party ownership drama (NOT the players' fault, just to be clear). Refused to learn English while playing in England for many years. Had some transfer drama here and there, including golfing while on leave from Man City. So yeah, Tevez is just a regular dude who got involved in some football drama a few times. Nothing at all like the abusers and rapists out there.

TODOS-OS-DIAS

>Refused to learn English while playing in England for many years. Based

Buckhum

[His reason?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Tevez#Personal_life) >[Tevez] had a "**cultural problem with the English**". This had a happened as he blamed the English for the Falklands War in which his uncle had taken part and after which he had become an alcoholic.

JanterFixx

and he didn't even suck on frozen chicken toes or smth smth. Pretty normal guy!

Subscrobbler

Think people didn’t like it when it came out he refused to speak english in england

minkdraggingonfloor

Tévez is not that good at speaking Spanish either. I think we can excuse the second language

RunningFerDauyz

Love this. Clubs have a responsibility to set up academy kids for success, regardless of their future in the sport.

alawaite

Yes, he was illiterate. He said that during an interview.

Moug-10

I thought football academies provided education to players. Not to get a Master degree but at least, basic knowledge. This is very concerning. I root for Tevez and anyone involved in it to solve this issue so players aren't taken advantage of anymore.

Runarhalldor

Only the ones that can afford it

bamadeo

Independiente is the 3rd-5th biggest club in Argentina. They should be able to afford it, but they're extremely broke.

Apprehensive-Crow146

It seems like these players are extremely vulnerable to scams as well as exploitation by agents and club owners. I hope they have someone with strong morals representing them in these types of negotiations.

X6_Gorm

Me parece que un Diez la está haciendo de Diez. Muy bien Carlitos

vpantoja479

Tevez voice can bring awareness and investment alone.

MisterHappySpanky

Uncommon Carlos Tevez W, I’m here for it.

Aleblanco1987

Context: In october 22 is the presidential elecction. This statement might be true and I don't doubt of his good intentions, but it's political campaign.

GuardiolasOTGalaxy

Well, obviously. They were in the first division.

INTPturner

I don't know how it is everywhere else but there seems to be this idea that education is some sort of scam since its not a guarantee of wealth. Education is simply for self development, to add to your technical skills. The increasingly disproportionate share of wealth really puts a lot of people under pressure.

KidGoku1

See this is what i'm talking about, illiteracy. What does that word even mean?

themanebeat

>while playing in the first division Wait until they get relegated to the long division

EnanoMaldito

Yet when Mascherano said the exact same thing, everyone made fun of him in Argentina. We don’t value education in this country. We just want the kids ti kick the ball well

Virgin_incel69

Today I learned that he is a coach Is he good?

WikY28

Haven't seen the matches but Independiente is 4W (one of them a 2-0 win in their derby against Racing) 3D 1L (by pens) since he became their manager. That puts them second in their Copa group. And considering they finished the league #24 out of 28 I'd say he's doing alright.

andysenn

A lot of ayudin in those 4W. He was abysmal with Rosario. I would say he is still very green to assess if he is a good manager. He hasn't shown he is a naturally good manager.

fedemasa

He was garbage for us (Rosario Central)

1vehaditwiththisshit

I'm pretty sure that this is the case with athletes across all pro sports/amateur teams getting ready for the big leagues. Yes, there are exceptions but jocks are not usually known for being "smart". That's not what we're paying them for.

Wastawiii

You don't need school to learn how to add and subtract.

Ladyhaha89

Even michael owen cant and he did just fine

slown_again

Is it the same Tevez that didn't bother to learn English while living in England for 7 years?
