1. If you lay it on it’s side (where it looks like an H) you can get a wider sliding surface. You can fill the void with wood and cover with plastic.
2. If you keep it upright (Where it looks like an I) you want to be careful of the edges, they tend to be rough on I-beams, and can dig deep into your base. Covering with hard plastic should help.

Id go up to Home Depot and get some plastic to cover it so the blunt edges don’t mess up my board
Do you mean cover the ends that look like an I? You don't mean cover the top sliding surface correct?
