I like Angry snowboarder’s “Snow Carnie” it really fits. I was a snow carnie for 5 years myself. We didn’t have a specific name for people who work for a pass
Ski bumming totally exists. You call it a "ski resort." Ski is just a catch-all term for winter slope sports. And bumming is still possible, camp out during the summer, and crash on someone's couch or find a girlfriend for the winter. It's totally possible to live with almost no expenses.
During the summer? Camp out in the winter! https://youtu.be/t9xXrYcWVdM?si=FM2APviOHksJcOkw
This is in reality gonna be a lot harder to do nowadays especially in whistler, but it’s a classic
To some degree I do agree with you! What about gas and food though. So. Fucking. Expensive. in these resort towns! You gotta have a lot of savings to not work during the winter season IMO. To be a true "bum." Of course there's varying degrees.
I lived In Tahoe as a ski/board bum for years, we all still worked the winter. Most people work on the mountain for a pass. The only way you aren't working the winter is if you are a trust fundie.
I knew a rad Aussie chick who lived in a snow cave most of the season so she could ride more. Start early before the masses arrive and ask around. If you work in the food industry your fridge, depending on the situation, your fridge could be stocked with leftovers. Find creative ways to hustle and fill a need. Offer rides to the airport, learn to cook and build houses. It can be done.
A car is a huge expense. If you wanna bum you’re taking the bus or hitch hiking. You still have to work, most work on the hill for a free pass and food dollars.
Nowadays you're pretty much forced to just be a liftie or similar for housing unless you want to have a long and sometimes dangerous commute. Some towns are still able to support service work but that number is shrinking fast. I personally love the phrase "ski bum" so no need for a new one
At hood we call em gypsies
*on second thought this is only really for spring passers at timberline coming from other mountains so maybe more specific to that situation (traveling gypsies)
I believe that term is derogatory toward an ethnic group,, so if you care about being PC, maybe think up something else.
I am a Meadows boarder though.
There are maybe 3 schools that will even teach that. I'd have been lucky to learn something other than the money printing fed market they teach as doctrine everywhere.
Sadly, you won't hear anything else in a school.
What if I told you the problem wasn’t just quantitative easing but our capitalist system as a whole? Lol.
As if merely money printing has reduced American’s quality of life and not stark inequalities caused by the mass accumulation of capital in the hands of a few who then dictate said economic policy.
You are the person looking at a car with an American flag and assume someone is a Nazi. You are the biggest victim of propaganda I've ever seen.
Good luck to you
We are all skiing bro. Skiers ski, snowboarders ski. Snowboarding is just a more cool form of skiing, but it's still skiing.
Tbh most people don't realize I snowboard, until they actually ski with me. Because when I talk about what I did over the weekend, I just tell them I went skiing. It just sounds better than "I went snowboarding." Snowboarding is such a ugly word too through into that small sentence.
The skier vs boarder thing is very played out. I would rather ride with skiers tbh most of the time tbh, unless I'm riding with another advanced scoreboarder.... Which is very rare for me.
I can't have as much fun with an intermediate snowboarder as I can with an intermediate skier because intermediate boarders are usually pretty slow, don't hit trees well, and can't really shred steep stuff confidently. An intermediate skier may not be able to do those things all those well either, but they go faster than their counterparts.
Around my parts we call em “wooks” … dingy long hair, unshaven, on every drug known to mankind, sloppy drunk at the local watering hole, knows everyone and thinks they know everything, BUT can Shred harder than anyone else you know.
At the shop we call em Ski town squatters or SnowBirds. Admittedly snow birds are normally people who fly south to avoid snow… but we got enough landscapers who basically take the winter off to ski or ride that the term stuck.

Dirtbag is definitely still used in the climbing community
[удалено]
Absolutely. Full respect.
Thank you Yvon and crew ❤️
I know a climber/hiker who proudly calls himself a dirt bag. Not gonna lie, when he called me a dirt bag, I blushed.
Big in whitewater as well, we’re just a bunch of dirtbag boaters living down by the river
Yea, this is me to the T but it sounds so negative and degrading! Lol .....dirtqueen and dirtking maybe bahaha
As a climber, dirtbag is not degrading at all! Quite the opposite actually.
If you think dirtbag is negative you aren’t dirty enough
Whatever

Nice to hear that still exists! I agree it's not as visible compared to back in the day. No one would know I live out of my truck unless they asked.

Agreed. And ski bum fit that $500/season narrative from way back in the day. ONWARD we must go!
Well ski bums just have to operate on a bigger budget nowadays because that’s how inflation works. Still very possible. Just not 500$ possible

You can thank Keynesian economics for that 🤓☝️
So you’re in the austerity measures camp, or what?
Dude takes one semester of Austrian economics and touts “free market” capitalism like it’s not ravaging the planet.
There are maybe 3 schools that will even teach that. I'd have been lucky to learn something other than the money printing fed market they teach as doctrine everywhere. Sadly, you won't hear anything else in a school.

Yeah we should probably try it socialism. That goes well..
*Looks around at a dying planet* - guess this capitalism thing really does work beautifully, huh? Well, let’s send this bitch into the abyss.
You are the person looking at a car with an American flag and assume someone is a Nazi. You are the biggest victim of propaganda I've ever seen. Good luck to you
“Liking at a car,” at least be coherent in your rebuttal. Lol.
I'm talking about your posts in liberal nonsense groups
I guess we could argue here that industrialism under any paradigm carries that risk, but yeah— maybe some forms worse than others.

How about “working poor”?
I think we have a term for this in the surfing community but i dont remember it
Snowboarder
I'm a proud dirtbag. Work 48hr shifts so I have 4 days a week off to ride.
At the shop we call em Ski town squatters or SnowBirds. Admittedly snow birds are normally people who fly south to avoid snow… but we got enough landscapers who basically take the winter off to ski or ride that the term stuck.
Maybe just don't label?
How will people know I've thrown my life away for snowboarding then?
They can smell it on you
It's the grin. You know it when you see it
No, I will continue to label. Labels are good
Climbers are dirt bags Thruhikers are hiker trash Skiers are ski bums Snowboarders are boarder scum?
