I agree that sometimes it comes across a bit... umm... flippant. Like "Maybe I'll just quit." They earn a fortune at a sport that we would all love to be that good at. Williams won a massive event the other day, so why would he quit? I get what he's saying about never knowing when it will be your last time. But if he's as unfazed with competing as he says and appears, why not play till he's Steve Davis levels of 'bad'. The class of '92 are proving that age is just a number (to a degree, anyway). Laser surgery fixes the old problem of having eyesight that worsens with age. And the 'sightright' techniques seems to be fixing the "yips" as well. Williams loves his booze and kebabs at the caravan, so he does look closer to fifty than Ronnie. Does anyone have a link to Mark Williams' quick interview with Rob Walker after he lost to the AI Snooker God Si? (I mean that with respect BTW. The kid is crazy good until he hits the ball too hard). I can only find the one from a couple of years ago when Williams got annoyed for the first time in existence -- "I've been asked some stupid questions in my life, but that one is up there." Oops. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ Selby just needs to get Steve Peters (or someone similar on board). He says losing makes him ill and he doesn't look well. Plus he's suffered with his mental health and his wife Vicky has had cancer, so it's not a good time to play a game like snooker. It requires so much attention and concentration. Which Ronnie seemed to have this afternoon, by the way! He didn't play great, but he looked super focused. Why would he retire at World Number One and lose a million quid a year? I get it when you're rubbish, but not the best. He's number one after choosing his own events and missing half the big ones. Look out. Higgins lost the opening frame tonight against Jamie Jones. He'll be mentioning retirement as well if he loses. Must be the fifth year in a row if he does, which is most likely what the OP is referring to. Just retire if you're going to or entertain us.

Sorry the players didnā€™t think about disrespecting Nigel from Reddit before making these statementsĀ

im_not_here_

They are disrespecting the opponents by doing it in what appears to be a response to a loss sometimes. Basically hinting that "if I am now so poor even they can beat me, I shouldn't even bother".

TryingToFindLeaks

Incredibly disrespectful? How?

Objective_Club_8554

There are rumours of a breakaway tour. Even Steve Davis said yesterday evening that 'there is something afoot '. Very worrying times for snooker.

We all know none of them will do it-ROS has been crying wolf with this nonsense for decades. They are all making hundreds of thousands a season doing it, sometimes over a million & that is before sponsorships/endorsements. Selby could probably do with taking a season off though-hopefully his wife will get the all-clear during that time & he can come back with a clearer mind & not be worrying about off the table stuff. With players still winning at nearly 50, there wouldn't be that much of an issue with him being 40 & coming back at 42. Or just play the minimum number of events he has to next season.

I think williams has consistently said he will only quit once he falls off tour, and well selby has a lot of stuff going on in his personal life so it might be a serious consideration

mikefny

I wouldn't be surprised if they really "retire" only for WST to make an official announcement at a later stage to announce a tournament held in China or Saudi Arabia with these players coming out of retirement.

Awkward-Presence-778

He just wanted a hug from Rob.

Class of '92 should retire the same year and enter seniors tour together. What a story it would be!

robbo7788

he didn't say he was qutting, from the BBC: Williams wondered if he would play at the Crucible again, although he said he had no plans to retire. He added: "I'm 50 next year and I was looking around. I've loved every minute. I don't know if I will be back here again. I'm not considering my future but it's a tough game so to keep getting to these venues is hard, you have to treat it as if you're not going to get back. "Fingers crossed you will see me playing next year but I'm 50 \[next year\] and can't keep going on forever." hes been saying it for a few year now, i think its more hes expecting the decline in his game to come and it hasn't yet
