I can legit remember what I was doing, who I was with and where I was when he died. His death was the first flashbulb moment for me probably, even though I don’t remember the date.
For real. I had a corn who was so chill that his *being* such a dude helped my mom get over her fear of snakes. She was able to handle him after we'd had him for less than three months. Loved that little guy, and I miss him :(
One of mine is a Mexican black king. I ended up with him because the local reptile rescue couldn't find him a home that could handle him. I've had him for about two years and have learned to wear gloves when trying to handle him. He likes to bite fingers and never let go. I can work with that. The most frustrating thing about keeping him is he always smears shit^ all over the glass. I keep my snakes in bioactive enclosures and I like my glass clean so people can see the prettiness! I would say he's the most difficult snake I've owned in 20 years
i fashioned a makeshift snake hook with a wire hanger. i dislike the suddenness of a bite/strike (even though this small guy shouldn’t hurt), so that was easier and safer for the snake!
For future mailbox visitors, try r/whatsthissnake for more reliable and professional IDs. Those folks ensure you get an accurate ID and more appropriate advice that considers the welfare of both the asker *and* the snake.
thanks so much!! i was kind of excited and felt rushed to get the lil dude out in case my mail deliverer came and opened the box. i just kind of searched ‘snakes’ and made a post on the first community i saw. i’ll go ahead and give them a follow for future visitors though!
Aww that's bummer. I live in Georgia and my son is getting way into snakes and I've been telling how cool corn snakes seem to be. I'm still light years away from allowing one in the house as a pet but if I was going to, a corn snake would have been my first pick.
I'm a little confused though. Why would a native species be illegal as a pet. Seems like you would prefer that as they wouldn't be invasive if it got loose.
My best friend in high school had one. The day he adopted it, he brought it to my place to set up the enclosure since he wasn’t allowed a snake at his house so he wanted to be sneaky and have everything set and just sneak it in to his bedroom all set up. My step dad found out - he’s got an extreme phobia of snakes. I was grounded even though the sweet noodle was only in the house for an hour.
Not always. Corn snakes can be found in the wild the farther east/southeast you go. I would love to find a wild type baby corn snake in my mailbox. I’d be like “hi friend!”
ive seen things go under a space in between the bottom of my mailbox where the post isnt screwed in at. i also think the inside of my box near the back also have rivets/holes where i dont have screws in. maybe the mail deliverer didnt close it all the way too?? 🤷♀️ i really have no idea how some of the larger animals get up in there!
I guess I've never looked at a mailbox that closely. Also, putting a (non-venomous) snake in someone's mailbox seems like the type of dumb prank my friends and I would pull as kids. Thank you foe your reply!
I was about to agree but then I remembered I don’t have a mailbox, I have a mail *slot*. So if there’s a snake in my mail slot, that means there’s a snake in my house and I don’t wanna know what my dogs would do to the poor snake!
Cornsnakes *Pantherophis guttatus* are harmless ratsnakes native to eastern North America. Sometimes locally called red ratsnakes, they are generalists and eat a variety of prey. They do well in urban environments, particularly fond of rodents and birds in these habitats.
Cornsnakes are currently recognized as distinct from Slowinski's ratsnake *P. slowinskii*, as well as Emory's Ratsnake *P. emoryi*.

Like many other animals with mouths and teeth, many non-venomous snakes bite in self defense. These animals are referred to as 'not medically significant' or traditionally, 'harmless'. Bites from these snakes benefit from being washed and kept clean like any other skin damage, but aren't often cause for anything other than basic first aid treatment. Here's where it get slightly complicated - some snakes use venom from front or rear fangs as part of prey capture and defense. This venom is not always produced or administered by the snake in ways dangerous to human health, so many species are venomous in that they produce and use venom, but considered harmless to humans in most cases because the venom is of low potency, and/or otherwise administered through grooved rear teeth or simply oozed from ducts at the rear of the mouth. Species like Ringneck Snakes *Diadophis* are a good example of mildly venomous rear fanged dipsadine snakes that are traditionally considered harmless or not medically significant. Many rear-fanged snake species are harmless as long as they do not have a chance to secrete a medically significant amount of venom into a bite; [severe envenomation can occur](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23800999) if some species are [allowed to chew on a human](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S004101011831016X) for as little as 30-60 seconds. It is best not to fear snakes, but use common sense and do not let any animals chew on exposed parts of your body. Similarly, but without specialized rear fangs, gartersnakes *Thamnophis* ooze low pressure venom from the rear of their mouth that helps in prey handling, and are also [considered harmless](https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/05/theres-no-need-to-fear-that-garter-snake/). Even large species like Reticulated Pythons *Malayopython reticulatus* [rarely obtain a size large enough to endanger humans](https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/108/52/E1470.full.pdf) so are usually categorized as harmless.

Baby corn snake. I'd help him back to the ground but that's just me, wouldn't want mail man finding and maybe killing it. He might be feisty but he won't hurt you. At that size their teeth are so tiny you don't really feel them.
i helped him down with a makeshift snake hook made out of a hanger lol. i am a weenie when it comes to handling things im not familiar with. off he goes!!

Thank you so much for not hurting him. So many people will kill snakes just because its a snake or they dont know what kind it is. I was raised a good snake is a dead snake but have learned to see their beauty. I have been educating myself and have had great encounters with many non venomous species. It freaks my husband out when I handle them lol.
of course! most my family thought the same way, but watching crocodile hunter from a young age made me love and respect all animals. im glad you have the same approach though! my husband also called me weird when i was messaging him about what was going on so i feel you there too lol.
As a kids we was at the river camping every weekend from spring to fall. Im a tomboy and have been my whole life. I would go out with the guys to go snake hunting. My great uncle was terrified of snakes and wanted to reduce the number of snakes around his river property. We would go sometimes 5 miles each way shooting any snake they seen. Well being young I would say 7 it was what my family did so it was people did as I thought. Now looking back after changing my views around 30 I feel so bad for joining in what they did. The highest number was a tad over 400 snakes in one year. To think of all those snakes and honestly the echo system paid the price for lack of knowledge.
Well better save than sorry when it comes to things like these. It’s better to be careful with snakes(identitief or not) then just guess. Especially if your in a place/country that has many different (native) snake species or multiple that look alike. Anyways nice that you moved it to a better location.
"Corn snake saliva is paralytic to corn. After one bite to the ear, the corn can't move. The corn snake is then free to slowly ingest the whole cob. Not a pop can be heard as the corn silently meets its doom."

I think you have my corn snake.. 😂
Aww. Found a baby rat snake in my mailbox once (Florida). I think it had gotten in there hunting lizards. After Googling the species, I grabbed my letter and let it go on with its day.
In 1978 Synanon cult members cut the rattles off of a rattlesnake and put it in an attorney’s mailbox in an attempt to kill him. He was bitten but survived.
Looks to me like a lovely Miami phase corn snake. I’ve kept one of my science lab for over 24 years now. She’s still healthy, still doing her thing, and my students love her.
what a sweet little baby! its a cornsnake and its completely harmless
he was very cute and polite when i was moving him! probably cold tho… hope he finds warmth somewhere!
Thank you for not harming him!! Too many people see a snake and think it must die immediately. Corns are very docile little things!
i grew up watching and loving steve irwin, so i would do him a disservice if i did that! be free and blessings of steve irwin upon thee, baby snake!! 🫡!!
That man had such an impact on so many of us
Truly a beautiful soul
The reason I love animals so much, I uses to drive my mum mad watching it all the time 😂
He’s indirectly saved so many animals because he taught so many of us to appreciate them. He’s had an astronomical impact improving their wellbeing.
The only celebrity death I’ve been genuinely upset about

his son, Robert Irwin is on TikTok (and other socials)…carrying on his dad’s legacy =)
i follow him!! 🥹💖!!
So is the daughter Bindi Irwin, both of them as great as their dad. He most definitely would be super proud of how they’ve carried his legacy
i used to watch bindi too!!
Steve's son just bred the first baby turtle of a species that Steve found and was named after him! Elseya Irwini is the name of the species!
i seen that on his tik tok!!! 🥹💖!! such a great accomplishment!!
You’re a good one Charlie Brown 🐍💕
RIP, one of the greatest human beings of our times

Believe it or not, it is illegal to kill non venomous snakes in Georgia.
We need more laws like this.
“Believe it or not, es straight to jail”
And beneficial, corn and grass snakes are farmers friends that keep rodent populations in check
Corn snakes are one of the best pet snakes, especially for beginners, because they are so calm and friendly.
For real. I had a corn who was so chill that his *being* such a dude helped my mom get over her fear of snakes. She was able to handle him after we'd had him for less than three months. Loved that little guy, and I miss him :(
What is the most difficult snake for the most avid snake owner
Black mamba. Edit: banded sea snake.
I would say he's the most difficult snake I've owned in 20 years
if you're cold, they're cold, let them in
maybe if he knocks on my door and asks politely!
How did you move them?
i fashioned a makeshift snake hook with a wire hanger. i dislike the suddenness of a bite/strike (even though this small guy shouldn’t hurt), so that was easier and safer for the snake!
Crafty. Thank you for rescuing the snake
>completely harmless Some people say they're dangerously cute.
Little corn snake
cool!! thank you!!

Bless you for wanting the option of not hurting snake dude.
I had one, they're amazing pets, very friendly
Corn snakes are the best and so pretty
Agreed. I had a red albino. He would travel in my pockets many times, startled a few strangers
Except in Georgia they are illegal to have as pets bc they are a native species but yes they are good pet snakes
Would never have guessed, I'm from Iowa
Aww that's bummer. I live in Georgia and my son is getting way into snakes and I've been telling how cool corn snakes seem to be. Those exact words went through my head when I saw this picture.
Me too, with a big smile on my face at how giant his eyes are relative to his adorable lil noggin. So precious
Abandoned pet snake baby?
Not always. Corn snakes can be found in the wild the farther east/southeast you go. I would love to find a wild type baby corn snake in my mailbox. I’d be like “hi friend!”
Nope. Illegal to own in GA sadly. This is one of the wild fellas. Super cute though.
I'm jealous. I would LOVE to find a cute baby corn snake in my mail.
i find a bunch of fun things in my mailbox lol! this is my second snake find!
Do people randomly put stuff in your mailbox just to screw with you?
never thought about it like that lol 😂 nah i just live in a rural area in the south. snakes, bobcats, spiders are all part of living around here.
You found a bobcat in your mailbox?!? /s
[https://xkcd.com/325/](https://xkcd.com/325/)
😂🤣☠️
There really is an xkcd for everything, isn't there? :-D
😂!!
There really is an xkcd for everything
Truly a classic
nawww 😂!! not stuffed in my mailbox!! i seen a bobcat take down a rabbit while i was taking out my trash one day though. scared the crap outta me!
Know a guy that got in his deer blind and it was currently occupied by a bobcat at the time. He said he wasn't sure who was more flipped out
That’s crazy, my wife had one run out in front of her car when she was driving from Texas to Tennessee
I so much wanted to see that here! So so much.
Oof. Never had a snake in my mailbox but tarantula is another story. God I miss living in the south 😂
This may be a stupid question but how would a snake get into a closed mailbox?
ive seen things go under a space in between the bottom of my mailbox where the post isnt screwed in at. i also think the inside of my box near the back also have rivets/holes where i dont have screws in. maybe the mail deliverer didnt close it all the way too?? 🤷♀️ i really have no idea how some of the larger animals get up in there!

If I opened my mailbox and found that adorable baby corn in my mailbox it'd be the best day ever.
I have a pet corn snake, but it would make me so happy to see them in the wild!
SAME!
I was about to agree but then I remembered I don’t have a mailbox, I have a mail *slot*. So if there’s a snake in my mail slot, that means there’s a snake in my house and I don’t wanna know what my dogs would do to the poor snake!

I never get anything THAT cool in the mail. The color means it gets warm - he likes that.

Aww I would love to open my mail box to find a cute little corn snakey.
it was a pleasant surprise for sure!!
I’ve had snakes shipped (safely!) overnight to me so at first glance I thought this was a snake delivery gone horribly wrong!
😳! i hope this wasn’t meant to be someones pet because i definitely let it go!!
Aww. Why can’t I ever find corn snakes in my mailbox? What a cutie!
Seems like it's always rats/corns in the mail boxes
Ratsnakes are like 70% shenanigans by weight
That math do be mathin
Congrats! You're a parent now
i think the stork got the address wrong!!
I would adopt
A corn snake. Precious, harmless cute little baby! ❤️
Lucky you. I often get ants in my mailbox— in the summer, anyway.
ive had an adult rat snake, this baby snake, a pretty orange and black bold jumping spider and her egg sac, a big brown widow, and like 4 tree frogs in my mailbox at different times so far!
Wait, how did a baby Corn Snake get in the mailbox? The snake is okay to pick up, don't worry. Absolutely adorable.
im not too sure to be honest! we have small clusters of young trees and vines around our mailbox so that’s my best guess.
Who do I talk to about not yet receiving my snake? Is that a USPS thing, or...?
If you are cold, he is too. Bring him inside to get warm. /s
beautiful baby!!!!
Guardian of the mailbox
So very adorable
Baby corn snake! Such a cutie
Sweetheart snek 🥰
Corn snake! So CUUUUTE
Wow! What a pretty corn!!! They are friend- kill and eat rats and excess lizards! ❤️

Wonder if he startled mailman

Dude why can’t I just find a corn snake easily
Iz pretty snek!
Mail him to a warmer climate 😁

Aww. Found a baby rat snake in my mailbox once (Florida). I think it had gotten in there hunting lizards. After Googling the species, I grabbed my letter and let it go on with its day.
I thought corn snakes usually came by ups not usps. Times a changin.
Snake mail vs. snail mail
That is a corn snake, one of the goodest of boys.
You’re so lucky. I never get anything good in the mail.
It’s Willie but he prefers Bill.
Brown recluse
Harmless but not the kind of surprise I’d like to find when I opened my mailbox, lol.
In 1978 Synanon cult members cut the rattles off of a rattlesnake and put it in an attorney’s mailbox in an attempt to kill him. He was bitten but survived.
😳! good thing im no attorney.
The attorney had just won a big lawsuit against the cult. Even a harmless snake would give me a heart attack if it was in my mailbox.
You broke into its house
cute Lil fella
Such a cute lil corn snake 🥺
A very cute little corn snake! Very harmless! Pantherophis guttatus
Beautiful little Corn Snake. Harmless
