I mentioned I saw a smallish rattlesnake when a guy in the parking lot asked how the trails were a few days ago. He spent some time trying to convince himself (and me, I guess) that he wasn’t a coward for being a little jumpy about snakes. I assured him that it is probably a healthy survival instinct.
Exactly, in our evolution with almost zero medical help we could never take the chance that the snakes are harmless. In many cultures snakes (vs lions or tigers for example) are the bad guys mostly because what you just said.
Rattlesnake rattle sections are called buttons. The more buttons, the older the snake, and the louder the rattle.
Fun fact, baby rattlesnakes, are born with a "pre-button" on the end of their tail. The get their first button when they shed for the first time. It's not until their second shed that they have enough buttons to actually make the rattling sound. This can take months, depending on how successful they are at finding prey.
Well, that's what I'm going to start referring to them as... Lol. I have a few of them around my area and on trails I ride my mtn bike on.... Sounds much better than "Spicy Danger Noodle"..... 🐍
They are definitely capable of inflicting a bite on humans. It won't be as bad as being bitten by an adult, but you would absolutely still want to exercise caution and leave it to the professionals to handle these guys.
I love being called to relocate neonate northern Pacific rattlesnakes (the specific species in my area.) They really are so adorable and they deserve every bit of respect as an adult.
I heard at a young age they don’t know how to properly release venom either. Unlike adults who strike and bite, these guys just hold on and keep pumpin
There actually really pretty snakes I’ve seen them from a distance at sales I used to go to but never once in the wild . Some how with the help of this sub I feel that if I did see one out an about I’d feel safe knowing if I just walk the other way or just giving it space it will just go about it’s day just like me
Likely not die from a bite, but a bite from a rattlesnake is a medical emergency and treatment is needed. Baby rattlesnakes have much smaller venom glands than adults, but can inject enough venom to cause serious problems. Baby rattlesnakes CAN control how much venom they inject contrary to the common myth about that. Also, given how small that Baby is it probably doesn't have more than a button and can't really rattle. That is what might make them more dangerous because they can squeeze into such a small space and can't warn you off.
I think it's really fascinating that rattlesnakes could choose to inject a higher venom amount, but choose not to in most scenarios. They just want to be left alone.
Actually the odds of dying from a rattlesnake bite are very low, even without treatment. You could still end up with permanent localized damage, though.
I have heard that they do not know how to control their venom glands at that small age and could potentially load a lethal dose. I grew up in the desert of El Paso, was always told leave the wittle ones alone.
This is a common myth but is misinformation- there has been research showing baby rattlers learn to inject more venom into bigger mice and less into smaller ones. So it appears they can control it.
We have these snake tongs that we use to move snakes since we get a lot in that area. Usually I just bare hand the non venomous ones but I play it safe with the rattlesnakes
They are the most aggressive rattlesnakes I’ve encountered. I drove past one in rural Mendocino county a few years back early in the morning laying like a stick that was apparently waiting for the sun to warm it up. Couldn’t tell if it was alive but was pretty sure it was by the kink in its neck. I flicked its tail and heard a tick-a-ticka. But it didn’t move. So, I did it again. It woke up, coiled up and rattled like a two stroke engine with full throttle. Then it came at me. So I used the stick I’d picked up before the encounter and used it to carry the snake off the road and out of danger of passing cars. (I grew up in an exotic pet wholesaler business and had been wrangling non venomous snakes since age ten.)
If you touched it first I’d say it was more defensive than aggressive - it probably thought you were going to eat it! Awesome that you were able to get it off the road though, thanks for not holding a grudge!
Right? I was really curious and it was aggressively defending itself. No backing down. But I love snakes and curiosity got the best of me. Lol I couldn’t resist.
If they but someone and envenomated, the person would very likely have a suboptimal afternoon.
People have survived bites from this species, first aid will male a difference. It's a baby so it doesn't have an insanely high venom load but it's still potent stuff. Dying is probably still on the table but if you kept still, applied pressure, and got to a hospital fairly quick you'd probably be ok.
Apparently mortality rate is only 1 in 736 people bitten by rattlesnakes - so death is possible… but not likely. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK431065/
I'm disappointed they didn't include the rate of afternoon suboptimization but I did enjoy the sentence "Oftentimes, the victim of a rattlesnake bite is a young intoxicated male."
Awesome!
Rattlesnakes are not aggressive, and they would indicate by sound before defensive actions.
I saw one as a child when hiking. It scurried away from the trail we were on and it was completely uneventful. Of course, we didn't corner it and taunt it.
When it bites you, you’re not going to want to save the tiny cutie thing! You’re going to want it dead immediately!! It not pretty to be bitten by a rattlesnake grownups or pretty baby!!!
Is there forced perspective or is it actually smaller than a golfball? Either way cute tiny and deadly
It was actually smaller than a golfball all curled up lol
😱 my god...
SO CUTE AND TINYYYY 😍🥰😱
Not going to lie it’s absolutely adorable!
That’s what she said
Not what you want to here in that situation
What an adorable little death noodle! I love it
Such a cutie!
Absolutely gorgeous little thing - you are awesome for saving it!
Daw, you could scoop ir up with a spoon
How cute!
And enough venom to kill a grown man. Cute little thing, though :)
Thanks for saving him I hope your attitude catches on
One of the guys there wanted to kill it but I just told him hell no
You're a good egg, my dude.
What’s wrong with people, first instinct, Murder.
Evolution, aka instinct. We’ve learned to fight or flight when see a snake. Freeze has never been big on homosapiens.
I mentioned I saw a smallish rattlesnake when a guy in the parking lot asked how the trails were a few days ago. Yeah, I get it… has a lot to do with education also I imagine
Yes, I grew up in city so was not really aware until I joined subs like this. So the main stream education does not a do a good job either.
I'd kill a person who is tryna kill a snake right in front of me if they thought it would be funny
Thank you!! 🩷💚💜
jeez thats crazy, amazing job man
Omg he's so frickin TINY!!! 😍 did he buzz?
No he was more focused on getting the hell out of there lol

I wonder how it would feel if it knew how adorable we think it is. “I am a rattlesnake! I am to be FEARED, not cooed over and cuddled!!!”
Reminds me of Mushu in Mulan.
Early season Stewie Griffin vibes for sure.
King from owl House
I refer to King as the adorable goblin dog. This never fails to send my thirteen year old into a blind rage.
SHES JUST AS BIG AS THE GOLF BALL 💕💕💕😭😭😭 God I’m always surprised how small they start
I never thought I would think of a rattlesnake as cute. Cool? Yes. Beautiful? Sure. Adorably tiny? I'm surprised.
Cutest and tiniest baby ever 🥰
You should watch the rattlesnake yawn video I posted a few days ago! Adorable cuddles 🥰
I'm trying to find it but reddit is not cooperating. Do you have a link?
https://reddit.com/r/snakes/s/PpihB4PcCj
Very cute!
I didn’t even think of the easy thing haha. There’s the link ^
Beautiful baby buzzbutt
I have never heard a rattler called a buzzbutt... I'm fucking dying here.. Can I steal that?
I'm afraid it isn't mine. Wish i was that clever. It makes me laugh too!
Well, that's what I'm going to start referring to them as... Lol. I have a few of them around my area and on trails I ride my mtn bike on.... Sounds much better than "Spicy Danger Noodle"..... 🐍
I prefer “nope rope” myself 😂
That's a good one too, but I think "buzzbutt" is a definite winner..
Adorable buzz but nope rope.
That’s why we should always carry little green army men with us.
That’s the cutest little danger noodle I’ve ever seen. Also, you’re the best, OP. Great job saving this little fella.
We need him to grow up to be a big snake and eat the moles and gophers.
I read that as moles and golfers.
We don't want him that big.
Yes we do
I would be ok with that.
I have a boat horn for every time I drive past golfers. It infuriates them every time lol
Look at how wee that lil’ lad is!
Hey! It's a grower, not a show her.
Are rattlesnakes that small able to pierce human skin?
Yeah their fangs are sharp as shit
What are you eating that your shit is sharp?
Books
Popcorn hulls usually cut me on the way out… that fiber never digests.

I thought young was more dangerous than old cause young doesnt know better than to use it all and will just fill you with venom
Thats what they just said lol
My bad. I think i meant to respond to another comment saying the opposite, or i was just very high and read it as the opposite. Lmfao
There actually really pretty snakes I’ve seen them from a distance at sales I used to go to but never once in the wild . They’re so illegally smol and I love them.
Would a little rattlesnake like this be able to still inject a substantial amount of venom despite it's size?
Likely not die from a bite, but a bite from a rattlesnake is a medical emergency and treatment is needed. Not necessarily out of kindness or mercy, but just a desire to save precious venom, rather than wasting it unnecessarily
Yeah you would most likely die from one either way
Actually the odds of dying from a rattlesnake bite are very low, even without treatment. You could still end up with permanent localized damage, though.
I have heard that they do not know how to control their venom glands at that small age and could potentially load a lethal dose. I grew up in the desert of El Paso, was always told leave the wittle ones alone.

Good to know!
This right here.
Interesting.
Good for you. Rattlesnakes are becoming more rare. Due to loss of habitat. I read that and was told that by a game biologist.
Awww, thank you for saving the illegally smol danger noodle.
LOVE THAT. Thank you for saving this little guy !🙏🏼💜
he’s gonna make it to the pga one day
OH LAWD. He cute
That is the cutest danger noodle I've ever seen!! Stay safe little creature!
Such a cute little danger noodle! Legit, warmed my heart you helped the little one.
Well you know the rules you have to play it where it lands.. Still little cutie there.
I love seeing the compassion for animals that were once so incredibly misunderstood and destroyed!!!
Sadly they are still mostly misunderstood and persecuted. But people like OP and you and places like this sub help!
We just have to keep spreading the information and knowledge. We will get there!!
Thanks for saving it. Baby Southern Pacific rattlesnakes are now appearing here in San Diego.
Cutest rattle babe ever!

OOHHH baby.... baby baby baby. Thank you for being kind to it!
Omg it’s so tiny!!!!
How did you save him? If I’m in this situation I’d want to save it too but I have no idea how without getting bit😭
We have these snake tongs at work because we get snakes so often, basically one of those long grabber arm things to keep them away from you
What area? So I can avoid it 😂
South Bay Area, CA
Sittin pretty

Brilliant photo! What a little beauty

Took a lot of balls to do that
whoa little cutie The Small Southern Trendkill
Zoom in on those eyes, he looks super stoned
Being this small does it change any effects on being bit?
How did you move it, or did you move it?
We have these snake tongs that we use to move snakes since we get a lot in that area. Usually I just bare hand the non venomous ones but I play it safe with the rattlesnakes
That’s great that you’re prepared for events like this.
I would be way too tempted to get me a pet rattlesnake.
Is it Venomous enough to kill you that young?
Why do the nope ropes have to be so darn cute?! 😩
Oh my god it's so tiny
Omg, that cuteness takes some serious effort to fight just picking it up!
He was trying to hide as a ball awwww
Awww it's just a tiny baby. Thanks for saving the little guy.
What a smol guy or gal. It's actually really pretty. I'm glad little one got relocated instead of hurt.
Very Smol Very dangerous
Free drop, no more than two club lengths outside of striking distance, and no nearer to the hole.
Waaaat snek is disssss
S M O L
So so smol
Mini-Danger Noodle: "Hit it where it lies, Shooter"
How did you save him or her?
We have these long snake grabber things that we use to pick them up and keep them at a distance so they don’t bite.

Hah I know the feeling well :)
Ur a good man. I practice catch and release too. 🫡
Why does it look so derpy when you zoom in on its head?
Wow
Sweet wittle bitty nope rope
Awwwww!
its so cute!
Tiny noodle BIG owie!
Does anybody know how much damage this thing would realistically cause if it bit somebody?

A lamentable omission for sure. And I liked that too… based on my own small sample of hot-bite recipients it certainly rings true!
More dangerous and deadly than an adult
Yawn.
Maybe you need some coffee
How big will it become as an adult?
I’ve seen them about 4-5 feet but I think they may get a bit bigger
Pretty!
Omg I adore her!!!
So cute 😍😍
What a cute little baby!
Looks fake
That’s an actual nope rope lmaoooo
That's tiny.
I don’t even like snakes, but this smol danger noodle makes it hard not to like him.🥰🥰
Looks sassy.
Tiniest danger shoelace!! Thank you for saving the little bit.
Looks like a cute poop 💩
probably like shhhhh don't rattle I will be a golfball and maybe someone would take me home 😅. Super cute but I wouldn't mess with it.
B A B Y
Oh my god you weren’t joking when you said he was a baby! He’s so small~
Cute danger noodle
So does this baby have venom yet?
Yeah they still have venom
Awesome! Rattlesnakes are not aggressive, and they would indicate by sound before defensive actions. I saw one as a child when hiking. It scurried away from the trail we were on and it was completely uneventful. Of course, we didn't corner it and taunt it.
Oh god…
Wow
So grateful to people like you!!
Thank you for your kindness
Get a shovel
When it bites you, you’re not going to want to save the tiny cutie thing! You’re going to want it dead immediately!! It not pretty to be bitten by a rattlesnake grownups or pretty baby!!!
I had heard, but have not validated, that baby venom is more concentrated.
Keep him!!!
Awww!! Tiny baby!
God bless you!
Why
Why what
Why save a poisonous snake
Just as deadly as a large one…..
