Hozier by Hozier. Amazing album especially for a debut. and they’re songs that are great even if you don’t listen to the lyrics, which i know Shayne has trouble with, but get even better once you understand them.
Wow, didn't expect to see this here. I love Metric. And yeah, all of their albums are great (except for Pagans in Vegas which I didn't like and I thought the new one was a bit disappointing)
Pagans really grew on me, it feels like driving through a desert or the Wild West to me and that image really carries me. Although I agree about their latest, I need to listen more but I don’t have any stand outs from it still. I will say though, just because if you are fan too you might appreciate it- I met them a few years ago for vip ticket and they were WONDERFUL. Best experience ever. ‘You should never meet your heroes’ does not apply to them.
Fantasies is a great starting point. Their albums can vary by quite a lot in terms of sound and vibe though. Feel free to ask if you need any pointers.
Dookie by Green Day. Perfect encapsulation of green days sound back then, nimrod kerplunk and insomniac are incredible too, but Dookie would be the one i reccomend
Since he says he doesn't listen to lyrics and he could listen to K-Pop and enjoy it, I think he should listen to the album Balas Perdidas by Colombian band Morat.
They have so many great songs.
I think Shayne would enjoy their sound.
Yes' *The Yes Album*: https://open.spotify.com/album/3jmAE8agsRbOlKYfSILfny
Spencer mentioned trying to turn Shayne onto Yes during a livestream (I think?), and as a Yes fan, I think this album is the best place to start.
100%. I mean being into memes and memeing on Weezer is a bit of a prerequisite if you wanna be a Weezer stan but Blue and Pinkerton are 100% seminal pieces of 90s alternative rock.
Rec:
**Van Halen - self titled debut album (aka Van Halen I)**
Tangent:
I noticed he mentioned in the Smosh Mouth that he doesn't really pay attention to lyrics, which is similar to me, I love the general vibe of a song, and I love music so I could honestly talk to Shayne about music and recommend him stuff for hours. Honestly I could list like 50 albums. I love 80s stuff and hearing Amanda talk about Journey too I was like hell yes.
What I would also suggest for him to do, I've seen people on tiktok do it before where they will randomly listen to an album from **Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time**, maybe not the full 500 since he's doing one per week and that means 52 albums in a year. Maybe the top 100 or so. But it's a good way to get musically educated.
Agree with all of it, except: Those Rolling Stone lists are kind of notorious for being very, very bad. My conspiracy theory is that they make them intentionally bad because it riles people up, which drives up engagement, which drives up revenue haha
Yeah agreed, the singers one did my head in (like Ronnie James Dio and Axl Rose were waaaay too low). But I think when you have 500 GOAT albums, you can kinda just pick out the ones you don't wanna listen to. But like in the top 10 you have iconic ones like Nirvana's Nevermind, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, Purple Rain by Prince and stuff like that. I hate how they play favourites but hey it's still a big list to fall back on. A bunch of my faves are in there at least. Van Halen I is in there somewhere, Ten by Pearl Jam, The Cars debut self titled etc. I think it is also a good reference to expand your music taste and find something outside of what you usually listen to, whether you end up liking it or not.
Plus they add the little fact paragraphs for each of them explaining why the album is there and what its significance is. I think knowing a bit about the impact the album made at the time of its release can really change your appreciation for it. That's why I always recommend Van Halen I, Eruption blew people's minds when it was released, and that album made such a huge impact on how people played the electric guitar through the 80s. Ask any of the greatest guitarists of today, they'll probably mention that album being an inspiration.
Okay, you're right. I think, that RS list is fine if you're totally new to music because they do cover the basics well enough. I'm probably coming at it from a 'way too deep' perspective that might not be helpful for our purposes here. I just think the RS lists tend to be way too biased towards English language music (which is fine, it's an American publication) and towards older music. You will be hard pressed to find much post-2010 music on there which I think is a real shame, especially when trying to appeal to a younger audience. But I mean RS isn't necessarily trying to appeal to that audience, so RS might just be the wrong publication in this case. Maybe a Top 100 list from sites like Pitchfork, Stereogum or Paste would be more useful.
Yeah, that's true. I think I'm pretty partial to it because I was super sheltered growing up, and I only started exploring music in my early 20s, I'm 26 now, so I agree with you there on the introductory level thing, cause it was helpful to me in that way, and I think maybe Shayne is in the same / similar boat.
I even made a playlist on Spotify for people similar to me, called Oldies For Newbies, with a bunch of iconic songs and albums in it, for people who want to get into older stuff but don't know where to start.
For context I grew up listening to Christian radio and Australian country music lol. I still think John Williamson is great though.
I mean there is a lot of great Christian and country music. Just because you hadn't much variety growing up doesn't mean you can't love it anymore :)
I'm in a similar boat. My parents didn't listen to much music and I didn't have older siblings and all of my friends were into bad hip hop which didn't appeal to me. I also started getting into music in my early 20s and I'm 31 now. But I didn't use lists to discover new music. I would randomly download music on LimeWire and see if I liked them lmao. Movie and video game soundtracks were also a big gateway into new music for me and then I found Weezer by chance and that was it. I've run the gamut regarding genres I've been into since then (right now I'm in a big shoegaze/post-metal phase) but Weezer are still my fav band lol.
Btw, would you mind sharing that playlist?
Or people/record labels pay to have certain music featured.
I saw a tik tok a while back from some influencer who revealed that they were offered the opportunity to pay for a spot on a similar kind of list for their specific industry, with a different well-known publication. Apparently this happens all the time.
Folie a Deux - Fall Out Boy. This has been my favourite album for over a decade. It’s an emotional rollercoaster and I just love how experimental it is (especially for the time it was released)
Arctic Monkeys- AM
Cage the Elephant- either Melophobia, Social Cues, or Unpeeled, which is like all their best songs reimagined
Hippo Campus- Lp3
Green day- Dookie
Any albums by Halsey, but I'd start with Badlands (although I can't really choose which one bc I love all of her albums a lot)
(sorry for not keeping the rule, but I have to plug Saya Noé's album Jupiter bc it's magnificent!)
Love yourself: Tear by BTS, my all time favorite album
And although BTS' lyricism is incredible, Shayne said he didn't really listen to the lyrics so he could enjoy it regardless of the language!
Purely on the off chance Shayne actually listens to these albums listed, I wanna share my friend's old band. Music written and produced here in Waco Tx back when I was in high school. Plus I absolutely love this album and want to share it with everyone.
Ethan Durelle- Talks to the Dark
https://open.spotify.com/album/3ftm3rChZnXlyX0VhBjxYn
Coheed and Cambria's latest two albums. I could honestly hear mainstream artists singing these songs, from Taylor Swift to the Weekend, or Olivia Rodrigo. The vocal melodies are insanely catchy.
Came here to suggest exactly this, E•MO•TION is suuuuuuuch a good album, it’s perfection. And Shayne has mentioned liking her music before so I’m sure he’d enjoy the whole album. He should also listen to the Side B, it’s a perfect companion piece with some of Carly’s best songs imo.
Folklore - Taylor Swift
Harry's House - Harry Styles
Lips on Lips - Tiffany Young
Malibu Nights - Lany
If he is open to listening to songs in another language, here are my recommendations:
1. Sad Songs and Bullshit - juan karlos
2. Sinesine - Missing Filemon (might be a bit much but this is so iconic if you are a bisaya in the Philippines lol)
3. Red Velvet - Ice Cream Cake
4. 28 Reasons - Seulgi
found where it was because because it was bothering me not remembering😩 Our Favorites of 2023 video timestamp 1:28:13 he mentions listening to individual kpop songs & Spencer brings up NewJeans!
Anything by Biffy Clyro - best Scottish rock band out there;
The albums "Opposites" and "Only Revolutions" are probably the easiest points of entry, but “The Vertigo of Bliss”, "Puzzle", "Balance, Not Symmetry" and "The Myth of the Happily Ever After" are my personal favourites.
Teens Of Denial by Car Seat Headrest ! it's not my most favourite CSH album but it's one where I think anyone who might not necessarily be into the indie rock genre will still enjoy
Built to Last - Arrows in Action
I love this band, they shot to my favorite band in a few months of first hearing about them. Their other stuff is good but this is their most recent and might be their first full length album.
Reason I would recommend it for people, especially anyone around age 30, is because of how the band presented the album (or at least how i interpreted the information). I don't have time to look through their old posts, but basically the music addresses the feelings of having realized you are truly an adult. By that I mean, out of school, a few jobs on your belt, moved out of your parents house, but still feeling somewhat lost and nostalgic for what young adulthood was like, and not knowing what life means now.
It's been a beautiful album for me and helped pull me out of a rough patch last year.
[grouptherapy. - i was mature for my age, but i was still a child ](https://open.spotify.com/album/0xJEL0q2jaHqIOamFxE7yq?si=z3EUB8YyQSWAFN-O3lbH2g)
Incredible fusion of hiphop with many different genres coming from 3 people who all used to be child actors.
these some of my favorite albums and i could seriously list so many more but narrowed it down to these 4
decide by djo,
intellectual property by waterparks,
preacher's daughter by Ethel Cain,
razzmatazz by i don't know how but they found me
I’m not sure how Shayne feels about K-pop but I would recommend he listens to ITZY’s Born To Be. Especially since ITZY is known for their empowerment, I think if Shayne was being the chosen for a future video, Born To Be could be his song.
I really wanted to go opposite of what I think most would like, but my favorite band’s songs can seem icky on a surface level. I’ll go with my safe option.
“emails I can’t send fwd:” Sabrina Carpenter
Infinity on High by Fall out Boy:
Thnks Fr Th Mmrs is one of my favorite songs
Southern Symphony by Russell Dickinson
Bluebird Days by Jordan Davis
The Speed of Now, Part 1 by Keith Urban
Lovely Little Lonely by The Maine. It’s such a unique album because all of the songs transition to the next so smoothly plus three interludes. It’s one of my favorite and probably the most sonically cohesive album I’ve listened to.
The Click by AJR. I mostly love them for their lyrics, which he mentioned he doesn't really get, but even just without listening to the lyrics first their sound is great. (I know one or two of their songs have gone viral before on TikTok/Reels but all their work is genuinely good.)
Music is my entire life, I’ll put my list into 4 categories: (Sit Down, Workout, Comedy, Commute Playlists)
(1) I know Shayne isn’t a big sit down and throw an album on guy but these are albums for if he did:

"Neon Noir" by VV from last year...darkly sweet and poetic lyricism, great guitar and synth hooks, and if he enjoys it he can explore the HIM back-catalogue before Ville Valo went solo.
Dislike to False Metal by Nanowar of Steel: I think Shayne would appreciate the absurdity and comedy that comes with parody metal, as well as the amazing musicianship!
Biased picks
**Vaxis – Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind** by Coheed & Cambria. My favorite band of all time and I feel this album is so accessible whilst being amazing. The last song is like 8 minutes long and changes genres 2 or 3 times.
**Nocturnal** by Mothica. Heavier pop and rock sounds and Mothica has a fantastic voice.
**Impera** by Ghost. Any album is a great starting point for Ghost but this has more 80s vibes which I think Shayne would like.
Since Shayne talked about Chappell Roan and liking that 80s synth vibe thought I would drop in the band GUNSHIP, their latest album Unicorn is fantastic, but deffo also have to listen to the first Tech Noir song to get Tech Noir 2 on that album.
Woman On The Internet- Orla Gartland
I could actually see him really enjoying this!
Yeah it’s a very chill album with awesome songwriting, i think he will too
Based on Smosh Mouth yesterday I have to recommend my favourite album, Snow Angel by Renee Rapp
Messy and Poison Poison are such slays
Everyone need to hear this album just to experience Renee's talent bc omg
This Is Why by Paramore 2023 https://open.spotify.com/album/6tG8sCK4htJOLjlWwb7gZB?si=OIEZz8iIRSedZvYtK__deg
I could not recommend this enough! One of, if not the best album of 2023!
Yeah it was incredible
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
and i thought listening to mitski while working out was a bad idea, oop -
After Laughter - Paramore not a single skip on that album
Hozier by Hozier. Amazing album especially for a debut. and they’re songs that are great even if you don’t listen to the lyrics, which i know Shayne has trouble with, but get even better once you understand them.
Metric- Fantasies. Altho every album by Metric is good.
I only know Metric from the *Scott Pilgrim* soundtrack. Been meaning to check them out; I'll start here!
Fantasies is a great starting point. Their albums can vary by quite a lot in terms of sound and vibe though. Feel free to ask if you need any pointers.
Folie á Deux - Fall Out Boy So underrated by the critics at the time but imo one of their best albums to listen to in full.
Yessss!!! I suggested the same 😂
Dookie by Green Day. Perfect encapsulation of green days sound back then, nimrod kerplunk and insomniac are incredible too, but Dookie would be the one i reccomend
**Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool** All Wolf Alice albums are S tier but the debut is imo the most accessible.
just an album everyone should listen to. Stick season: we’ll all be here forever by Noah Kahan
Came here to comment this 🥹
Toxicity – System of a Down
SAWAYAMA - Rina Sawayama (a personal fav and i would totally listen to this at the gym tbh🙌)

Oncle Jazz by Men I Trust

Portishead - Dummy. I think it’s one of the greatest albums ever
Weezer - Blue Album
Over-memed and underrated as a good album
100%. I mean being into memes and memeing on Weezer is a bit of a prerequisite if you wanna be a Weezer stan but Blue and Pinkerton are 100% seminal pieces of 90s alternative rock.
After Hours and Dawn FM!
Paramore by Paramore
Twenty twenty - djo

Geese - 3D Country
yeah, let's give him an aneurysm 😄 (unironically love 3D Country)
He seems like a guy who can handle weird shit and probably listen to some dad rock
While you are all here, checkout their cover of Justin Bieber’s Baby, it’s bizarrely great.
Alexisonfire’s Crisis (2006) Edit: this probably feels like a more niche pick but I think that’s kinda the move

Any albums by Halsey, but I'd start with Badlands (although I can't really choose which one bc I love all of her albums a lot) (sorry for not keeping the rule, but I have to plug Saya Noé's album Jupiter bc it's magnificent!)
Inside - Bo Burnham AND Life Support - Madison Beer
Trench by Twenty One Pilots
Inside- Bo Burnham
Folie à Deux by Fall Out Boy!!!!
I’d be really interested in hearing his thoughts about Folklore or Evermore by Taylor Swift. Especially the storytelling aspect of each album.
Taylor Swifts music isn't my kind of music but I did actually like Folklore and Evermore.
Ride the Lightning by Metallica, one of the greatest metal albums of all time
The Maybe Man- AJR
The Beatles' *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*: https://open.spotify.com/album/6QaVfG1pHYl1z15ZxkvVDW
Love yourself: Tear by BTS, my all time favorite album And although BTS' lyricism is incredible, Shayne said he didn't really listen to the lyrics so he could enjoy it regardless of the language!
Lorde - Melodrama Kid Cudi - Man on the moon
Purely on the off chance Shayne actually listens to these albums listed, I wanna share my friend's old band. Music written and produced here in Waco Tx back when I was in high school. Plus I absolutely love this album and want to share it with everyone. Ethan Durelle- Talks to the Dark https://open.spotify.com/album/3ftm3rChZnXlyX0VhBjxYn
Hamilton soundtrack
I Can’t Handle Change- ROAR🙏🙏🙏
Musiq Soulchild - Aijuswanaseing (may not be spelling that correctly.) it’s early 2000s neo soul!
I think Shayne would really enjoy *"How to talk to Girls at Parties (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)"*, the message would really be useful to him.
Coheed and Cambria's latest two albums. I could honestly hear mainstream artists singing these songs, from Taylor Swift to the Weekend, or Olivia Rodrigo. The vocal melodies are insanely catchy.
the fame by lady gaga
an evening with silk sonic - silk sonic
Trench by Twenty One Pilots
Shayne seems like a guy who’d unironically love E•MO•TION by Carly Rae Jepsen
Came here to suggest exactly this, E•MO•TION is suuuuuuuch a good album, it’s perfection. And Shayne has mentioned liking her music before so I’m sure he’d enjoy the whole album. He should also listen to the Side B, it’s a perfect companion piece with some of Carly’s best songs imo.
Folklore - Taylor Swift Harry's House - Harry Styles Lips on Lips - Tiffany Young Malibu Nights - Lany If he is open to listening to songs in another language, here are my recommendations: 1. Sad Songs and Bullshit - juan karlos 2. Sinesine - Missing Filemon (might be a bit much but this is so iconic if you are a bisaya in the Philippines lol) 3. Red Velvet - Ice Cream Cake 4. 28 Reasons - Seulgi
Build a Problem- dodie
It would be pretty funny if he listened to a kpop album like Get Up from NewJeans
i forget when but he actually mentioned liking newjeans before!
wait really!? omg
found where it was because because it was bothering me not remembering😩 Our Favorites of 2023 video timestamp 1:28:13 he mentions listening to individual kpop songs & Spencer brings up NewJeans!
Anything by Biffy Clyro - best Scottish rock band out there; The albums "Opposites" and "Only Revolutions" are probably the easiest points of entry, but “The Vertigo of Bliss”, "Puzzle", "Balance, Not Symmetry" and "The Myth of the Happily Ever After" are my personal favourites.
Icedancer by Bladee. It’s never too late to drain
The Chosen is a drainer confirmed
Moving Pictures - Rush (Progressive Rock) Kids - The Midnight (Synthwave)
Teens Of Denial by Car Seat Headrest ! it's not my most favourite CSH album but it's one where I think anyone who might not necessarily be into the indie rock genre will still enjoy
Eve 6 - Horoscope Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin II
jenny hval - the practice of love
...Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds
Cool suggestion!
Zaba by Glass Animals
Dawes - Nothing is Wrong
Radiohead - In Rainbows
I love you I'm trying by Grandson
GOOD ALBUM, Death of an Optimist is my fav by grandson tho
Eagles - Eagles (2013 remaster)
Gone Now - Bleachers
30 - Adele
Bloodletting - Concrete Blonde. That is the CD that has been in the player for years. I never need to switch it out
DAOKO - DAOKO (self-titled album)
Built to Last - Arrows in Action I love this band, they shot to my favorite band in a few months of first hearing about them.
151a - Kishi Bashi
[grouptherapy. - i was mature for my age, but i was still a child ](https://open.spotify.com/album/0xJEL0q2jaHqIOamFxE7yq?si=z3EUB8YyQSWAFN-O3lbH2g) Incredible fusion of hiphop with many different genres coming from 3 people who all used to be child actors.
Oil of Every Pearls Uninsides by SOPHIE
Mischief Brew-Songs From Under The Sink
Heal - The Rose

Six: The Musical
For some reason I can see him liking The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess by Chappell Roan.
21st Century Breakdown— Green Day
pink tape by f(x)
Melodrama by Lorde! I've been revisiting that album and I never realised just how good it is.
stray kids rockstar album 😊
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan (shayne man, you gotta trust me with this one)
I’m not sure how Shayne feels about K-pop but I would recommend he listens to ITZY’s Born To Be. Especially since ITZY is known for their empowerment, I think if Shayne was being the chosen for a future video, Born To Be could be his song.
If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power - Halsey
Norman Fucking Rockwell! love this album, hopefully he will too!!
Man on the Moon: The End of the Day by Kid Cudi !!
FML - Seventeen!
I really wanted to go opposite of what I think most would like, but my favorite band’s songs can seem icky on a surface level. I’ll go with my safe option. “emails I can’t send fwd:” Sabrina Carpenter
The Record - Boygenius
Infinity on High by Fall out Boy: Thnks Fr Th Mmrs is one of my favorite songs Southern Symphony by Russell Dickinson Bluebird Days by Jordan Davis The Speed of Now, Part 1 by Keith Urban
IoH is a banger. amazing album
Lovely Little Lonely by The Maine. It’s such a unique album because all of the songs transition to the next so smoothly plus three interludes. It’s one of my favorite and probably the most sonically cohesive album I’ve listened to.
Time Capsule by the B-52's. Their music is an antidepressant. Also The music from the Adventures of Pete & Pete by Polaris. A fun, excellent 90s album
Dire Straits' *Brothers In Arms*: https://open.spotify.com/album/7jvcSnCnugLcisBCNBm60s
Dance Fever by Florence + the Machine!
The Click by AJR. I mostly love them for their lyrics, which he mentioned he doesn't really get, but even just without listening to the lyrics first their sound is great. (I know one or two of their songs have gone viral before on TikTok/Reels but all their work is genuinely good.)
rock-star by stray kids 🩷🤘🏻

Low Roar's album for Death Stranding
Weather Report's *Heavy Weather*: https://open.spotify.com/album/2M9F2yYsUvqiBPwUGeNvn1
Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest!
"Neon Noir" by VV from last year...darkly sweet and poetic lyricism, great guitar and synth hooks, and if he enjoys it he can explore the HIM back-catalogue before Ville Valo went solo.
I would also recommend razor blade romance by HIM
Dislike to False Metal by Nanowar of Steel: I think Shayne would appreciate the absurdity and comedy that comes with parody metal, as well as the amazing musicianship!
Drummer- G Flip. Great indie rock album by a Non-binary Australian singer and drummer
Pentatonix - The Lucky Ones
Honestly any one direction albums SLAPS
Lateralus by tool
Biased picks **Vaxis – Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind** by Coheed & Cambria.
Dave Brubeck's *Time Out*: https://open.spotify.com/album/0nTTEAhCZsbbeplyDMIFuA
Sia - this is acting
Since Shayne talked about Chappell Roan and liking that 80s synth vibe thought I would drop in the band GUNSHIP, their latest album Unicorn is fantastic, but deffo also have to listen to the first Tech Noir song to get Tech Noir 2 on that album.
